Hear Ann-Margret and Pete Townshend’s New Take on the Everly Brothers’ ‘Bye Bye Love’
Image
Nearly 50 years after she portrayed Tommy’s mother in the big screen adaptation of the Who’s rock opera Tommy, Ann-Margret is reuniting with Pete Townshend for a cover of the Everly Brothers classic “Bye Bye Love.” It will appear on her upcoming LP Born To Be Wild, arriving in stores on April 14.

“Being offered an opportunity to work with Ann-Margret, especially on an Everly Brothers song, was just too romantic to pass,” Pete Townshend said in a statement. “Ann-Margret’s work on the Tommy movie back in 1974 (when she...

Fleetwood Mac at 50: Mick Fleetwood Shares Tales of Blues and Friendship from the Iconic Band’s Early Days
Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie, John McVie, Stevie Nicks, and Fleetwood Mac
For many, the story of Fleetwood Mac begins with the 1974 arrival of Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, the talented yet combustible American duo who ignited an explosive string of hits that continue to define the band. But Mick Fleetwood wants to move past those rumors. Fans of the group’s pop jewels would hardly recognize their original incarnation as one of the most respected British blues bands of the ’60s. Now the founding drummer is telling the tale of those formative years in Love That Burns: A Chronicle of Fleetwood Mac, Volume One 1967–1974, a lavish new book by Genesis Publications due out Sept.

Cuba Gooding
Inside Cuba Gooding Sr.’s Incredible Family History, Career and Love Life
Cuba Gooding
At the time of his death on Thursday, Cuba Gooding Sr. was perhaps best known by younger generations as the father of Academy Award-winner Cuba Gooding Jr. But long before his son became famous, Gooding Sr. was a celebrity in his own right, having overcome the hardships endured by his refugee parents to become the lead singer of a popular funk band.

Born in New York City in 1944, Gooding Sr. was the son of Dudley MacDonald Gooding and his wife, Addie Alston. The elder Gooding, who spoke seven languages, had fled his native Barbados to escape servitude in 1936. He eventually found his way to Cuba,...

Vinyl of the Week: Les McCann & Eddie Harris - Swiss Movement
Les McCann & Eddie Harris - Swiss Movement (Atlantic, 1969)

I don't profess to have the deepest critical knowledge of jazz, especially with managing editor Steve Holtje being our resident expert, but I definitely have a deep appreciation. Regardless, Swiss Movement by Les McCann and Eddie Harris remains of one of my favorite live jazz albums. I just picked up a super-clean used copy of it at one of my favorite vinyl shops in Akron, Ohio.

The above track -- "Compared to What," written by Gene McDaniels, recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival in1969 -- was one of my favorite soul jazz tunes when I was just getting into jazz. And I still never tire of this timeless classic, nor the album. The rest of the set burns with the same ferocity sans vocals. And while I thought I knew everything about this album, I recently discovered that saxophonist Eddie Harris...

Vinyl of the Week: Summer Albums, Part 2
My summer has been filled with deep loss. My younger brother David succumbed to major injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on June 1st. Along with the comfort and love from my family and friends, music was a necessary daily elixir. Many nights I would listen to vinyl in my mother's home, albums I'd left there years ago, or a handful of new/used pieces I picked up at one of my favorite Akron, Oh vinyl shops. The ritual of cleaning each piece, placing it on the turntable, dropping the needle, studying the album art, reading the liner notes... it was a much-needed distraction. Here are three new pieces that have aided me in my latest life's journey.

Nick Cave - Push The Sky Away (Bad Seed Ltd)

Mr. Cave lost his teenage son in a tragic accident last July and is set to release Skeleton Key in September, his...

Marianne Faithfull at an event for Carnage (2011)
LONDON -- Universal Music Group International said Wednesday that it is digging deep into its back catalog to make about 100,000 deleted European recordings available exclusively via Internet digital download. The first group of 3,000 tracks, available starting in mid-February, will include recordings made during the past 40 years in the U.K., France and Germany. Featured artists include Nirvana, Marianne Faithfull, Eddie & the Hot Rods, Brian Auger & Julie Driscoll, Chris De Burgh, Big Country, Jacques Brel, Nana Mouskouri, Eddy Mitchell and Brigitte Bardot. "Over the next three to four years, we aim to reissue perhaps as many as 10,000 albums for downloading, which amounts to more than 100,000 tracks. This program will offer material that in some cases goes back to the early days of recorded music," said Barney Wragg, senior vp at UMGI's eLabs division.
