Sig Arno in Jamais deux sans toi (1950)

Trivia

Sig Arno

Edit
  • Arno looked lanky and thin. This was the reason that producers tried to match him together with the stout actor Kurt Gerron (1897-1944) in order to appear as the comedian duo "Beef and Steak" - with success.
  • In 1933 the Jew Arno had to go into exile. In the following six years he traveled through Belgium - there he realized the movie "La gloire du régiment" (1937) as a director, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Partugal and the Netherlands - here he played again in different plays. Finally he went to America in 1939.
  • In 1945 he became an US citizen.
  • In 1966, Arno won an honorary award at the German Film Awards "for his continued outstanding individual contributions to the German film over the years.".
  • Only in 1955 he returned to Germany and acted at different theaters in Vienna and Hamburg.
  • Brother of the actor Bruno Arno.
  • Prolific German-born character actor of stage and screen who left his country after the Nazis gained power in 1933. From 1939, he started a new career in Hollywood, playing comical or eccentric foreigners. He was also a noted portrait painter.
  • Both Siegfried Arno and Wladimir Sokoloff found help by Wilhelm Dieterle (as he tried it for many other of his colleagues as well) at the beginning of their career in the USA.
  • In 1957 he went back to the USA where he was active on stage exclusively.
  • Sig Arno, as he called himself since 1940, could make a name for himself as a drawer and portraitist.
  • He already made his stage debut in 1913. After World War I he continued his acting activities at the theater, first in Hamburg and from 1921 in Berlin.
  • Siegfried Aron (this was his real name) got an education as a styler at the art school in Hamburg.
  • Arno appeared three times on Broadway, notably in the musical Song of Norway and the play Time Remembered by Jean Anouilh, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award as Best Featured Actor in a Play in 1958.
  • Was nominated for Broadway's 1958 Tony Award as Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Dramatic) for "Time Remembered."
  • Performed on Broadway infrequently from 1944-1959 (see "Other Works").
