Before arriving in the WWF (now WWE) as Joey Abs, he competed as Viper in seversl Carolinas promotions, especially New Dimension Wrestling (he held the NDW Heavyweight title) and OMEGA (he held the OMEGA Heavyweight title).

Teamed with Eddie Jackie to defeat Stone Cold Steve Austin at a televised WWF event. This was in his days as an unknown preliminary wrestler, before he became "Joey Abs".
