Sky released a first look at the limited series Thursday, with Paul Bettany starring as envious court composer Antonio Salieri and Gabrielle Creevy as Constanze Weber, Mozart’s fiercely loyal wife.
Based on Peter Shaffer’s award-winning stage play, and adapted by Joe Barton (Black Doves, Giri/Haji, The Lazarus Project), the five-part reimagination explores the meteoric rise and mythic downfall of one of history’s most iconic composers — and rock star virtuoso of the 18th century, Mozart.

Nothing says horror quite like the white picket fences and child-rearing fantasies of American suburbia. The idea of introducing unfathomable evil to an idyllic, middle-class neighborhood has provided the foundation for horror classics such as Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street — but it has also inspired a handful of newer films as well. Lorcan Finnegan's 2019 hit Vivariumis another take on the nightmares of suburban living and the nuclear family, and it's currently available to stream for free on Freevee.
A combined psychological horror and science fiction thriller, Vivarium follows Gemma and Tom, a young couple played by Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots respectively. The two are looking to purchase their first home together, which leads them to encounter Martin, a strange real estate agent who takes them to a suburban development called Yonder, and disappears while the couple are exploring one of the houses. Warning: Spoilers for Vivarium.
Written by Garret Shanley and directed by Lorcan Finnegan, 2019’s Vivarium is a science fiction psychological horror film that follows a young and happy couple, Gemma (Imogen Poots) and Tom (Jesse Eisenberg). Looking to buy their first home together, the pair visit a real estate agency where they’re immediately met by a strange, but somewhat friendly sales agent who convinces them to view one of the brand-new homes available for purchase. Despite Tom’s clear aversion to checking out the house, the pair oblige the man. Upon entering the peculiar neighborhood called Yonder, every single home looks exactly the same. They tour house number 9 and chuckle to themselves about how stale it all appears to be. However, when the real estate agent suddenly disappears without a word, Gemma and Tom are no longer laughing.
After brushing off the odd interaction, they attempt to leave Yonder.

The following contains spoilers for the Doctor Who Christmas special, "Joy to the World," now available on BBC iPlayer and Disney+.
Christmas Day saw Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor returning to screens in the Doctor Who Christmas special, "Joy to the World." The special found the Doctor traveling alone following Ruby Sunday's departure from the Tardis at the end of Season 1 (aka Series 14), as she returned to Earth to get to know her recently discovered birth mother. Following the loss of Ruby, the Doctor was struggling to adapt to traveling on his own again. The Christmas special saw him encountering and befriending other characters who were also on their own, helping him open up to others and come to terms with Ruby leaving.
At the core of "Joy to the World" was the Time Hotel, a hotel that used time portals to allow the guests to stay in rooms from throughout Earth's history.

Doctor Who’s many Christmas Specials are very rarely anchored to reality too tightly. Whether it’s 2023’s “The Church on Ruby Road,” with flying goblin pirate ships, vanishing babies, and even a musical number, or 2008’s “The Next Doctor” having cyber-converted-dog-people walk around Victorian London, these episodes of the series don't always take themselves too seriously. This year’s festive special, “Joy to the World,” takes things to another level.
The entire 55-minute story is just one mad moment after another, from hotels with rooms that lead to distant parts of Earth’s history to a secret code that no one can ever work out. It’s refreshing to have such an unapologetically far-out episode to add to Doctor Who’s more than 60-year canon, especially following the first season of a brand-new era which deliberately sought to shake up the show and turn its formula on its head.

Somehow, it’s been half a year already since Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor last graced our screens. In all fairness, though, having just stopped Jackal God Sutekh from delivering his dust of death to the universe and bid his bestie Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) an emotional farewell in Doctor Who series finale ‘Empire Of Death’, everybody’s favourite two-hearted Time Lord had more than earned some time off. Aptly then, ‘Joy To The World’ — an absolute treat of a Christmas special, poured from the pen of former showrunner Steven Moffat — sends the Doctor off to a luxury hotel for some well-deserved R&r… and a spot of planet-saving with Nicola Coughlan. Naturally.
Having penned arguably both the best (‘The Husbands Of River Song’) and the worst (‘The Return Of Doctor Mysterio’) Christmas specials in modern Who, Moffat smartly plumps for a quintessential Whovian formula here, taking a passingly curious...

Just like Santa, BBC sci-fi behemoth Doctor Who is returning on Christmas Day to deliver a special gift: “Joy to the World.” The hour-long, annual Christmas special this year features Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan when it reteams the Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, and writer Steven Moffat with showrunner Russell T Davies.
The Sherlock writer is back to pen his impressive ninth Christmas special for Doctor Who. “Joy to the World” is set within the Time Hotel — a hotel where every door is a portal that can transport you anywhere and anywhen. For Christmas, the Doctor (Gatwa) meets Joy (Coughlan) and discovers dinosaurs, dangers and a sack full of more (yule have to wait until the big day to find out what else). Meanwhile, a deadly plan is unfolding across the Earth, just in time for Christmas. The special releases Dec. 25 on Disney+.

Ncuti Gatwa and Nicola Coughlan are already bringing "Joy to the World" thanks to their work on series like Sex Education and Bridgerton. But they're also doing it in a more official capacity, as the duo star in this year's Doctor Who Christmas Special, set to air on Christmas Day, around our world, at least.
And in a new trailer released on Thursday by Disney+ and the BBC, the beloved British series will do what it does best — celebrate the holiday season with some cheery scraps and silly antics over the course of several misunderstood alien encounters. As the official synopsis reads:

While Doctor Who's future is currently far from a sure thing (more on that in a moment), we have at least one more season with Ncuti Gatwa in the Tardis to get excited about. We're also just a few short weeks away from this year's Christmas special.

Director Robert Zemeckis' Here depicts the lives of a wide cast of characters as they appear on a single slice of land across history. Based on Richard McGuire's graphic novel of the same name, Here follows a story that spans centuries of American history. Despite the compelling concept, critics' reviews of 2024's Here have skewed negative, despite boasting an impressive cast.
With Tom Hanks leading the cast of the 2024 film, Here certainly carries a great deal of star power. However, he's hardly the only recognizable name in the cast. Since the movie covers multiple periods in history, it can't just rely on Hanks and also draws heavily on the performance of a long list of stars, each of which playing a character associated in some way with the land that drives Here's story.

Critics' reviews for Tom Hanks' new movie, Here, have arrived, but they are not so great. Based on the 2014 graphic novel by Richard McGuire, Here tells the story of multiple generations of couples and families who have lived in the same house spanning centuries. Killers of the Flower Moon screenwriter Eric Roth co-wrote the film with Oscar-winning filmmaker, Robert Zemeckis, who also produced and directed the film. Here stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright in lead roles, reuniting onscreen for the first time since co-starring in Zemeckis' 1994 movie Forrest Gump, along with Paul Bettany and Kelly Reilly.
The first reviews for Here are in, and critics have found themselves generally unimpressed with the Forrest Gump reunion. The Daily Beast called the Robert Zemeckis movie "an embarrassment." IndieWire echos the same sentiment, calling out the director for wasting "a de-aged Tom Hanks and Robin Wright." IGN points out that the movie...

While the meaning of 2019's Vivarium movie is somewhat elusive, an examination of the overall plot and ending does shed considerable light on what director Lorcan Finnegan's film is actually about. The sci-fi film Vivarium, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots, focuses on the hellish suburbia that is the inescapable town of Yonder as the young couple is forced to raise an alien offspring. Lorcan Finnegan's sci-fi thriller tells the story of a young couple trapped in a frightfully uniform suburban neighborhood that quickly reveals itself to be a nightmare.
The Vivarium movie centers on gardener Tom (Jesse Eisenberg) and kindergarten teacher Gemma (Imogen Poots), a happily unmarried couple who are looking to become homeowners. This leads them to visit a deeply strange estate agent named Martin (Jonathan Aris), who makes lavish promises of the beauty and perfection of a newly built development named Yonder and coaxes them into...

With the Toronto International Film Festival starting, there’s plenty to look forward to on the feature front. There’s also much room for discovery among Short Cuts, TIFF’s dedicated program of short films. Spread across seven groups and one feature pairing, this year’s Short Cuts comprises 48 shorts from 23 countries, the most titles in the program since 2019. There’s also one major change this year in the form of Strange Cuts, a set of six genre shorts one might describe as a bite-sized take on TIFF’s Midnight Madness.
This year also has the strongest collection of shorts in some time, which is partly why I decided to highlight 11 titles this year as opposed to the usual 10 (a self-imposed maximum due to limited time more than a lack of wanting to write about more films). Below are my thoughts on these 11 highlights from this year’s program, and...

Horror has plenty of sub-genres. Everyone has their favorite. Are you a fan of the 80s slasher flick? Do you prefer a Saw-like torture film? What about a comedy/horror like Cabin in the Woods? But there is a genre that has been growing, just below the surface, for years. The idea of being trapped in an enclosed space is something that a lot of people would like to avoid. Their paranoia and claustrophobia mean that even talking about it can lead to awful thoughts and even physical responses.
This might be why the trapped space horror genre is so damn bone-chilling. There is no escape. Hulu's latest horror flick, The Mill, does an excellent job of expanding the genre.

Warning! Spoilers for season 3 of His Dark Materials.
While His Dark Materials season 3 was relatively faithful to the original books, it did make some changes in transitioning to screen. Any adaptation from one medium to the next will inevitably need to make alterations to a story. However, sometimes this transition is mishandled and dilutes the source material with additives or misses key moments. But in the best translations, narratives should change to fit their medium to best utilize the assets of a visual versus textual narrative, which largely appears to be the case with His Dark Materials.

Fleabag star Sian Clifford and Sherlock actor Jonathan Aris are joining BBC and HBO fantasy series His Dark Materials.
The duo are joining as Agent Salmakia and Commander Roke, respectively, both ‘Gallivespian Spies’. In the Philip Pullman story, Gallivespians are tiny humanoids who evolved in their native universe’s earth.
In the books, Gallivespian Spies are described by Pullman thus: “He was striking to look at: he was no taller than Lord Asriel’s hand span, and as slender as a dragonfly, but the rest of Lord Asriel’s captains treated him with profound respect, for he was armed with a poisonous sting in the spurs on his heels. He and his kind, the Gallivespians, had few of the qualities of good spies except, of course, their exceptional smallness: they were so proud and touchy that they would never have remained inconspicuous if they had been of Lord Asriel’s size.
