Beulah Archuletta(1909-1969)

Beulah Archuletta was best known for her role as "Look" in John Ford's La Prisonnière du désert (1956). She was born as Beulah Donahue on August 24, 1909, in Phoenix, Arizona, and was a member of the Gila River Indian Community. Her mother, Lillian Johns, was Maricopa (Pee-Posh) and her father, Lawrence Donahue (died 1922), was Klamath from northern California. Beulah and her seven siblings were raised Presbyterian. She attended the Phoenix Indian School and was graduated in 1929. She married Santiago "Sandy" Archuletta in 1934. The couple had two children, James (1935-2003) and Arlene (1939-2010).

Beulah mostly performed as an extra of background actor, but she did play minor roles in La grande caravane (1957) and La Prisonnière du désert (1956). Her last movie was as an extra in the epic Western La Conquête de l'Ouest (1962). She died in Los Angeles on October 28, 1969, aged 60.

    While filming The Searchers, John Wayne saw her crying in between filming scenes. He asked why she was crying and she told him that she was going to miss her son's wedding due to the filming schedule. Wayne stopped production for a couple days and flew her to California so she could attend her son's wedding.
