The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will feature the return of Saruman to the big screen, and it will be using the voice of the original actor from Peter Jackson's seminal trilogy. Set almost two hundred years prior, The War of the Rohirrim features some familiar faces in animated form, but the film had to get creative to bring back the wizard. Although he passed away years ago, Christopher Lee has been brought back for the upcoming anime film to play the iconic villain from The Lord of the Rings.
During an interview with The One Ring, longtime franchise screenwriter and producer Philippa Boyens revealed how exactly they brought back Lee as Saruman for The War of the Rohirrim. Thankfully, AI was not used to generate new voice lines that sound like the actor. Instead, Boyens and co. reviewed old lines recorded by Lee for...

As the war against the use of AI in Hollywood productions rages on, the controversial tech gained another ally recently in Andy Serkis, the director behind the upcoming Lord of the Rings movie, The Hunt for Gollum, who calls it "another form of magic." Serkis is also known for portraying the titular character in the franchise through the use of motion capture, another technological advancement that he says has taken a long time for actors to embrace.
Serkis comments come after an appearance on a panel at the UKs Labour Party conference in Liverpool (via Deadline), where he was on hand to discuss the pros and cons of AI. While many have rallied against the advancement of its use in movies, Serkis believes those hesitations are rooted in fear. He calls it a "misunderstood" tool, much the same way the internet was before it became a part of our everyday lives.

Cate Blanchett barely got paid for her role in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, receiving only free sandwiches and elf ears. Blanchett signed on for the films to work with Peter Jackson and didn't receive any backend revenue. Despite the lack of financial benefits, fans can look forward to a new Lord of the Rings movie directed by Andy Serkis in 2026.
While Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy has become a lauded masterpiece by fans everywhere, earning 17 Oscars across the trilogy and raking in just under $900 million at the box office, it wasn't as glamorous for the cast during shooting. In fact, Cate Blanchett, who played Galadriel in the trilogy, has revealed that she barely got paid for appearing in the films. Blanchett's Elven character narrates The Fellowship of the Ring's iconic opening, and makes several in-person appearances across the franchise.

Despite teasing in the movies, Aragorn and owyn don't end up together due to Aragorn's long-standing love for Arwen. Initially, J.R.R. Tolkien considered having owyn and Aragorn be a couple, but the age difference led to their separation. Aragorn's love for Arwen since he was 20 ultimately determines his romantic fate, leaving owyn with Faramir in the end.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy is not exactly a hotbed of romance, either in the books or the movies. They're far more concerned about the conflict surrounding the ring, and most of the characters featured in the story don't even think about romance. But there are some characters where romance factors in: specifically, Aragorn, Arwen, and owyn.
In the movies, these three are in a love triangle. When owyn is introduced in the second movie, The Two Towers, there is a spark for both owyn and Aragorn. But Aragorn is also in...

Billy and Dom Eat the World isn't a Lotr project, but draws inspiration from the epic fantasy trilogy for a new food travelogue series. The show features the hosts visiting different restaurants, with origins from the duo's Lotr podcast that led to their new venture. In one episode, the pair visit a pub in east London owned by their Lotr costar, Ian McKellen.
While it may be over 20 years since Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan played the Hobbits Pippin and Merry in The Lord of the Rings, they have recently had a surprise reunion with the wizard Gandalfor more precisely, actor Ian McKellen. However, this team up is not linked to the upcoming The Hunt for Gollum, but rather a new food travelog, Billy and Dom Eat the World.
The new six-part series may not be a Lord of the Rings project, but it does have ties to the Peter Jackson trilogy beyond its hosts.

Viggo Mortensen may return as Aragorn in The Hunt for Gollum if the script is good or he needs money. Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis will produce and direct the film, respectively. The film will explore Gollum's character and may feature familiar characters from the original trilogy.
The Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen has revealed what it will take to persuade him to reprise the role of Aragorn in the upcoming prequel, Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. And we can only hope that one of them doesnt happen. In a new interview with THR, Mortensen, who played the role of Ranger of the North and future King throughout the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, says his possible comeback all depends on the script...or his bank balance.

Orlando Bloom expressed a strong desire to reprise his role as Legolas from Lord of the Rings during a recent panel at Superhero Comic Con. A new film titled The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is in the works, with Bloom possibly returning to play Legolas once again. The film will follow Gandalf, Aragorn, and Sauron as they search for Gollum over his connection to the One Ring, potentially including Legolas's father, King Thranduil.
Despite being a star in two iconic film franchises, there's no question for Orlando Bloom which role he would love to revisit most. During a panel at Superhero Comic Con 2024 in San Antonio, Texas this weekend, Bloom expressed his hopes to bear the bow of Legolas from Lord of the Rings once again.

Russell Crowe reveals why he turned down the role of Aragorn in Lord of the Rings, sensing the studio's push, not director Peter Jackson's interest. Peter Jackson initially cast Stuart Townsend as Aragorn, but he was deemed too young, leading to Viggo Mortensen landing the iconic role. Despite not playing Aragorn, Russell Crowe respects Jackson's decision and moves on, leaving the role to Mortensen for cinematic history.
The Lord of the Rings franchise could have looked a lot different had it included Russell Crowe, and now the actor has revealed the real reason that he didnt pursue the role of Aragorn, who was eventually played by Viggo Mortensen. Quick Links The Valar Forbids Gandalf From Using Full Power Gandalf Knew the Limits of Greed Magic Isn't Easy The Valar forbids Gandalf from using full power to guide mortals in achieving their own peace - a key element in the trilogy's story. Gandalf understood the limits of power and greed, avoiding becoming another Saruman through Valar-imposed restraints. Gandalf's sparing use of magic was due to its taxing nature and the need to influence others to take control of their own affairs.
The Lord of the Rings is one of the greatest trilogies ever made, and there are several reasons for this. Certainly, the key characters, Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Frodo (Elijah Wood), Sam (Sean Austin), and Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), left an indelible mark on the story. In particular, Gandalf, who portrayed a wizard that guides the people of Middle-earth on the path of peace, has made the trilogy far more interesting.

The Hunt for Gollum will delve into Aragorn and Gandalf's mission to locate Gollum for the sake of the One Ring secrets. Morgoth, the predecessor to Sauron, remains unseen on screen due to lack of adaptations from The Silmarillion, where he plays a central role. Bringing Morgoth to life in film poses challenges as his character is similar to Sauron, despite being more powerful, and may confuse audiences. Recent developments, like Prime Video's The Rings of Power, tease potential appearances of Morgoth, hinting at deeper integration of The Silmarillion.

The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson, is easily one of the most impactful and important cinematic events of the 21st century. The classic fantasy novels written by J.R.R. Tolkien were often considered to be unfilmable, making the idea of successfully translating them to the big screen almost laughable at the time. Somehow, Jackson, New Line Cinema and the rest of the extensive team on the films were able to do the impossible.
The result was a series of films that was able to capture the world’s attention in an incredible fashion. Each film was a smash hit at the box office, with The Return of the King becoming just the second film in history to gross more than $1 billion worldwide.
This success was also seen at the Academy Awards, as all three films were strong contenders in their three consecutive years in a row.

It's no secret that converting classics into 3D is in vogue, with new versions of Titanic, Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, and Beauty and the Beast hitting theaters in 3D next year. Actor Elijah Wood revealed that The Lord of the Rings producers are actively talking about converting the entire trilogy into 3D for new theatrical releases.
Here's what the actor had to say below.
"I think it would be cool to see. There's talk of releasing a dimensionalised trilogy eventually. I'm okay with doing post-process 3D, as long as someone takes the time. What I'm upset about is when a movie doesn't have the budget and the time to devote to it and they're not fine-tuning the detail of that, because it can look really bad and cheap. But I know that they wouldn't dimensionalise it unless it was a super meticulous process."

If you were driving past the Best Buy in West Los Angeles yesterday, you might have seen a few sights you don't see every day, even in L.A. The gigantic store on Sawtelle Blvd. was transformed into Middle Earth to celebrate the midnight release of The Lord of The Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy Extended Edition Blu-ray release, which hits shelves June 28. I was invited to take part in the festivities, and even chat with a few cast members from the trilogy last night. It was quite a sight to see.
Part of the festivities was a costume contest, which saw numerous die-hard fans dressed up as their favorite characters such as Gandalf, Saruman, and many others. They were all vying for several Lotr-related prizes, including the whopper of a grand prize: a one-week trip to New Zealand to visit several trilogy-related locales, including the Weta special effects house.

Actors Sue for 'Lord of the Rings' Profits
Fifteen actors from The Lord of the Rings movies have filed suit against film studio New Line, accusing the company of a breach of contract over merchandising. The New Zealand actors filed court papers in Los Angeles Superior Court last Wednesday, alleging New Line broke an agreement to pay them five per cent of an estimated $100 million profits from merchandising sales, such as caps, games and mugs. The actors' lawyer Henry Gradstein said New Line took "gross participation" fees that the company wasn't entitled to. Gradstein says, "The expenses will always be approximately 104 per cent. It's Hollywood accounting." This is the latest of several lawsuits New Line have been served with in relation to the film adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien classic novels. In 2005, director Peter Jackson accused New Line of withholding profits from the first installment in the trilogy The Fellowship Of The Ring, while producer Saul Zaentz settled out of court with the firm over the rights to the books. According to industry newspaper Variety, the fifteen actors filing lawsuits are: Noel Appleby, Jed Brophy, Mark Ferguson, Ray Henwood, Bruce Hopkins, William Johnson, Nathaniel Lees, Sarah McLeod, Ian Mune, Paul Norell, Craig Parker, Robert Pollock, Martyn Sanderson, Peter Tait and Stephen Ure.
