Souled Out Comedy is a documentary film that follows six African American stand-up comics who perform together in a groundbreaking show in New York City. All successful, full time comedians, Wali Collins, Dean Edwards, Leighann Lord, Marc Theobald, Mike Yard and Rick Younger came up through the “chitlin’ circuit” before they found a place in mainstream comedy. Struggling to fight the stereotype of the foul-mouthed black comic, these comedians keep it comparatively clean onstage. They are therefore caught in the middle: not raw enough for black rooms, but too black for white rooms. This documentary watches as these six performers band together to create a show of their own, one they hope will dismantle the stereotype and bring a whole new genre of clean, classy comedy to New York City; to bring comedy soul to Broadway.
