The Creator Of Ed, Edd N Eddy Started With This Revolting MTV Animated Series
Image
In 1991, MTV debuted its animated shorts showcase program "Liquid Television," and it was a huge step for the medium. Underground comics artists and up-and-coming animators suddenly had a location, on one of American television's most popular stations, to exhibit their work and make bold experiments. In the early 1990s, animation was taking a turn -- pointedly -- away from the previous decade's corporate mentality, and toward edgier, creator-driven works. "The Simpsons" and "The Ren & Stimpy Show" pushed the boat out, and "Liquid Television" was an entire marina full of smaller support craft (not to strain a metaphor).

"Liquid Television" was where audiences first saw Mike Judge's "Beavis and Butt-Head" first goofing off, and where they got their first taste of Peter Chung's "Æon Flux." Those shorts eventually spun off into their own standalone animated shows. "Liquid Television" was a testing ground for new animated voices.

In 1994, however,...

This Cartoon Network Classic Sadly Ended an 84-Year Animation Trend
Image
Children’s shows usually fall into one of two categories. Some are quickly axed and forgotten. Others, like Cartoon Network’s inimitably strange Ed, Edd, n Eddy, enjoy lengthy runs and animated immortality. More precisely, the show’s ten-year run makes it the fifteenth longest-running animated cartoon in American history.

Of course, being a Cartoon Network show, it trends towards the edgier side of animated content. Detractors often called out the show for its plentiful toilet humor and unique visuals. While the former accusation is true, the latter was and still is a matter of personal taste. For example, Terrence Briggs criticized the show’s artistic style for resembling an “acid trip caricature” in the February 1999 issue of Animation World Magazine. Oddly enough, that animation is one of the show’s many claims to fame. See, Ed, Edd, n Eddy was made at the tail end of classic animation. By the time of its premiere,...

The 10 Best MTV Animated TV Shows From The 1990s
Image
While MTV is largely known for its music-related programming, the channel also has a few great animated series from the '90s. MTV in the '80s gave rise to the popularity of music videos for the decades' biggest hits, but as the craze for music videos died down the following decade, MTV pivoted to animated series. Liquid Television, a sort of animated variety show, ran from 1991 to 1995 and helped launch some of the most popular animated shows on MTV, including Beavis and Butt-Head and Aeon Flux.

MTV continued producing animated series in the 2000s, but the most memorable series remain those from the previous decade. MTV's animated series were beloved by audiences for their dark humor and pop culture references, which differentiated the channel from others at the time. The aforementioned series Beavis and Butt-Head, along with Daria, are undoubtedly MTV's most successful and remembered animated TV shows, but...

Ed, Edd N Eddy Creator Responds to Reboot Idea, Explains Why It Would 'Fail Miserably'
Image
Danny Antonucci, creator of Ed, Edd n Eddy, opposes a reboot and believes it would fail. He welcomes Cartoon Network to create new content but has no interest in participating. Ed, Edd n Eddy was a personal project for Antonucci, based on his life experiences, and he cherishes the memories of its creation.

Danny Antonucci, the creator of Ed, Edd n Eddy, has spoken out about his time working on the series and shut down possible ideas for a reboot, flat-out saying that a reboot would not work. The series lasted for five seasons over eight years and was wrapped up in a television movie, Ed, Edd n Eddy's Big Picture Show, in 2009. During a discussion with Animation Magazine, Antonucci says that he felt a great sense of achievement, having done what he set out to do, and believes that a reboot concept would not work despite fans wanting...

Why Cartoon Network's Ed, Edd, & Eddy Revival Would "Fail Miserably" Explained By Creator
Image
Danny Antonucci believes a revived Ed, Edd n Eddy would fail, even on Adult Swim or approaching the show from different characters' perspectives. He suggests the show would merely repeat original ideas, lacking novelty and appeal. A reboot without Antonucci's involvement risks falling short of the original's success, however a spiritual successor unconnected to the original could still be developed

Ed, Edd n Eddy creator Danny Antonucci has explained why a revival of the series wouldn't do well, no matter how the show ended up being revitalized. The 1999 series follows its three titular characters as they come up with various schemes to make money in oftentimes failed attempts to buy jawbreakers. Considered one of the best shows on Cartoon Network, the animated comedy ended with season 6 in 2009, with no concrete plans to continue the series or revive it afterwards.

Speaking with Animation Magazine about the show, Antonucci explained why a revived version of Ed,...

Cartoon Network's Billy & Mandy First Appeared In A Gory Head-Drilling Film
Image
Maxwell Atom's animated series "The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy" debuted on the Cartoon Network on June 13, 2003, and would go on to run for 84 episodes over the course of six seasons. The premise was delightfully ghoulish. The cluelessly happy Billy (Richard Steven Horvitz) and the angry misanthrope Mandy (Grey DeLisle) once cheated Death by rigging a limbo competition; it seems that Death will grant favors to the living should they win at a competition à la Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal."

Because of Billy and Mandy's limbo victory, a grim reaper named Grim (Greg Eagles) becomes their indentured servant. Grim constantly wants to kill Billy and Mandy, while the kids just want to go on adventures. Grim begrudgingly goes along. Early Billy & Mandy segments were originally aired as part of the diptych series "Grim & Evil," which shared its 22-minute airtime with another Maxwell Atom series, "Evil Con Carne.

How and Why Did Ed, Edd n Eddy End?
Image
Ed, Edd n Eddy made up just one of the additions to Cartoon Network's golden generation of cartoons. As the three delinquents spent their days simply trying to pass the time in the cul-de-sac, usually scamming their friends for a quick buck, the three boys were more than deserved of their place alongside Cn's sterling output in Johnny Bravo, Powerpuff Girls, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Dexter's Laboratory and more.

Created by Danny Antonucci, the series ran for nine years between 1999 and 2008, spanning 80 episodes and thus making it Cartoon Network's longest-serving show. With its off coloring of yellows, greens, and pinks its beautifully sketched characters, felt like they were living in a world that looked like a foodstuff that had been left in the fridge too long and was now collecting mold.

Its stories, mostly always revolving around Eddy hatching a plan to make some money, so they can purchase jawbreakers,...
