      • Quotes
[on Michelangelo Antonioni] He was a man you could never quite reach, because he was always a bit over and above everything, even over and above himself. He was unknown, even to himself. In fact, the constant theme of his films was this desire to change identity. It was really a personal theme, something that came in his personality: not recognising his very self, his very feelings, not knowing even what love was. It did not exist, either from an intellectual or an emotional point of view. I don't exactly know to explain it, but perhaps he felt it diminished him to feel love for just one person, because his mission was so much bigger - his cinema was the task that involved him more than any other thing.
