Don’t-Miss Indies: What to Watch in September
Summer’s over. Looks like it’s time to get back to work. And by work, we mean some serious movie watching. Luckily September doesn’t disappoint. We have everything from the highly-anticipated Megaopolis, the self-funded opus from Francis Ford Coppola, to the star-studded Netflix affair His Three Daughters, to the return of the king of tight, gnarly thrillers, Jeremy Saulnier, with his new one, Rebel Ridge. Oh, and a doc about psychics from a Fast-Track alum, with Lana Wilson’s Look Into My Eyes. Looks like the fall is shaping up to be quite the movie season. Now get out there and start watching!

Korea’s Anthology Studios and India’s Panorama Studios have partnered for the remake of the Drishyam franchise in Korea.

Panorama Studios is backed by producer Kumar Mangat Pathak, while Anthology Studios is founded by former Warner Bros. local Korean production head, Choi Jae-won (aka Jay Choi), “Parasite” actor Song Kang-ho and acclaimed director Kim Jee-woon. The trio previously worked together on 2016 film “The Age of Shadows.” Anthology’s “Cobweb,” directed by Kim, produced by Choi and starring Song, is premiering out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival on May 25.

The two studios will join hands for the Korean remake of the Drishyam franchise. The announcement was made at the India Pavilion in Cannes on Sunday by the two studios with Pathak and Choi present.

Written and directed by Jeetu Joseph, the Malayalam-language “Drishyam” (2013) was headlined by superstar Mohanlal. It followed a cable TV operator whose simple world splinters...

The movie is a deeply personal examination of cinema, body, truth and storytelling, centering on a young filmmaker (Odessa Young) as she recounts the story of struggling to make her first feature. Fact bleeds into fiction, and the past, present, and future converge to create a modern myth that redefines and expands the very act of creation.

Prasanna Vithanage
What’s wrong with the Sri Lankan film industry
Prasanna Vithanage
Although it has existed for more than six decades now, the film industry in Sri Lanka is still struggling to find its footing. A particularly poor last decade has thrown Sri Lankan cinema on a downward spiral except for a few films that made their presence felt at international film festivals. Theatres recorded 5.5 million admissions in 2010 against 17 million in 2001.

Even though the Sri Lankan civil war ended in 2009, with only 168 theatres left in the country, the film industry is far from recovery.

Reasons behind this downfall range from government apathy to the absence of an organized film industry in the country. The National Film Corporation, which was instrumental in bringing about a boom in local cinema during the 70s by handing out no-interest loans to filmmakers, completely stopped funding films by 2010.

Even though the Sri Lankan civil war ended in 2009, with only 168 theatres left in the country, the film industry...
