The Sci-Fi Box Office Flop That Derailed The Career Of Star Trek's Jonathan Frakes
Image
Jonathan Frakes' 2004 kid-friendly sci-fi flick "Thunderbirds" had everything going for it. It was based on the cult Supermarionation series "Thunderbirds," created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson in 1964, a puppet-based adventure show that had a notable cult following among Gen-x TV addicts. The movie also leaned really hard into the show's colorful vehicle fetish, spending a lot of time looking at the five giant Thunderbirds rescue craft, all but assuring little kids would want toy versions of each. "Thunderbirds" also sported a notable cast, with Bill Paxton as the patriarch of the Tracy family, Anthony Edwards as the bookish tech guru Brain, and Ben Kingsley as dark-eyed villain Hood. Then-teen-star Vanessa Hudgens had a bit part as the girl Alan Tracy (Brady Corbet) had a crush on.

The premise of "Thunderbirds" is pure Saturday morning: on a remote Tropical island, the Tracy family operates a freelance rescue organization called International Rescue.

Jodie Foster's Favorite Movie Is A Controversial Comedy That's Celebrating Its 20th Anniversary
Image
Jodie Foster's career has been famously wild. As a child, she appeared in lightweight Disney films like "Napoleon and Samantha" and "Freaky Friday," while also taking the world by surprise playing an underage sex worker in Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver." Throughout the 1980s, she successfully continued acting as she grew, appearing in films like "Foxes," "The Hotel New Hampshire," and "The Accused," for which she won her first Academy Award. In 1991, Foster won her second Oscar for playing FBI cadet Clarice Starling in Jonathan Demme's bleak serial killer thriller "The Silence of the Lambs," one of the few films to win "The Big Five" Oscars. That same year, Foster made her directorial debut with the child-prodigy drama "Little Man Tate."

From then on, Foster was a Hollywood staple, leading multiple high-profile studio dramas like "Maverick," Robert Zemeckis' "Contact," and "Anna and the King." She also worked with...

10 Best Sci-Fi TV Shows Of The 1970s
Image
Following the success of '60s series like Doctor Who and Star Trek, the 1970s introduced a variety of inspired, fun science fiction adventures. Though the technology wasn't as advanced during the '70s and didn't allow for elaborate special effects appreciated in today's sci-fi TV shows, the low-budget quality of the series' special effects adds a unique charm. While some shows leaned into the action-packed campiness of the decade, others preferred a grounded approach to the genre.

Shows such as Timeslip and Doomwatch have strong themes surrounding the dangers of reckless science experiments, tying these messages into their adventurous plots. However, the '70s still had plenty of exciting stories to tell as well. The Six Million Dollar Man and Battlestar Galactica are just two sci-fi TV shows that had strong heroic leads and absorbing conflicts set in space.

Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget Was Influenced By Thunderbirds And Mission: Impossible [Exclusive]
Image
More than two decades ago, "Chicken Run" clucked its way onto the movie scene and became a runaway hit. The stop-motion animation movie was clever and strange, and unlike any of its contemporaries at the time (CGI-heavy flick "Dinosaur" and wacky Disney one-off "The Emperor's New Groove" bookended it at the year's box office). "Chicken Run" was also a surprisingly rich text, a movie that included plenty of moments of parody and humor meant to appeal to adults as well as kids.

The first movie functioned as a riff on "The Great Escape," the 1963 war film starring Steve McQueen, but the new sequel film, "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget," chose a different parody path. In an interview with /Film, director Sam Fell confirmed that "Dawn of the Nugget" was influenced by heist films, so much so that it earned a pointed nickname during production. "We called it 'Chicken Impossible,...

A Forgotten Sci-Fi Show Sent Star Wars Scrambling To Redesign The Millennium Falcon
Image
In George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi/fantasy film "Star Wars," the roguish smuggler Han Solo (Harrison Ford) claimed to have the fastest starship in the galaxy. Named the Millennium Falcon, the ship was said to have "made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs." Clearly, Lucas hadn't yet grasped that a parsec is a measure of distance (about 19 trillion miles) and not time.

When it comes to its design, the Millennium Falcon is more or less a flying saucer. It carries a radar dish on its dorsal region, two fork-like protrusions on its bow (called loading arms), and its cockpit rests protruding from its starboard side. Otherwise, it's flat and plate-shaped. Like many of the vehicles in "Star Wars," it is encrusted with textured plating and scads of ineffable machinery that only the most devoted Starwoids could accurately explain. It's a small ship, too, only able to house about a half dozen people comfortably.

Exclusive: Nick Tate Unpacks Space: 1999 and an Upcoming Doc About Its Iconic Spaceship
Image
There’s nothing quite as illuminating as visiting a sci-fi conference and realizing that more than 5,000 model makers are in attendance. It was an eye-opener for actor/producer Nick Tate, who played the stalwart Alan Carter in TV’s Space: 1999 back in 1975. “I thought they wouldn't take any notice of me because they're so interested in the models, but I was overwhelmed with the reaction from these guys because they love the Eagle Transporter in the show, and they know that my character Alan Carter was the pilot. I was signing model Eagles, which was extraordinary to find yourself doing.”

Tate may be doing more of that in the near future, thanks to Jeffrey Morris. The filmmaker is diligently raising funds via Kickstarter to produce his much-anticipated documentary The Eagle Has Landed. The doc will feature interviews with Tate and co-star Barbara Bain, who played Dr. Helena Russell on the show,...

Pretty Packaging: The Stingray Blu-ray Boxset Stuns
Image
Gerry and Sylvia Anderson are known as legends in the field of science fiction television series, and rightfully so. While they are probably most famous for their live action series Space: 1999 and the puppet series Thunderbirds, they have been responsible for a lot more titles. The British distributor Network is now releasing these older titles as lavish Blu-ray boxsets, and these are a sight to behold. If this paragraph so far feels familiar, I'm flattered, because it means you've read the article I wrote for Network's pimped Blu-ray release of Fireball XL5, back in April. In that article, I called that edition "magnificent". Well guess what? Their release of the aquatic science fiction puppet series Stingray is even better. Switching from black and white...

Stingray: The Complete Series Deluxe Edition

Blu ray

Network

1964, 1965 / 1.33:1 / 975 Min.

Starring Ray Barrett, Robert Easton, David Graham, Don Mason, Lois Maxwell

Written by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson

Directed by Alan Pattillo, David Elliott, John Kelly, Desmond Saunders

If nothing else, Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s Stingray should be celebrated for inspiring Team America: World Police, the gonzo marionettes-on-the-make political satire from South Park agitators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. If their 2004 farce was designed to provoke just about everybody, Stingray was also pretty out there, albeit in a trippy, Summer of Love kind of way. An aquatic puppet show swimming in psychedelic color, languid pacing, and underwater scenes apparently filmed inside a lava lamp, Stingray reflected the inveterate stoner’s mindset better than anything in Yellow Submarine. The entire series has just been released in an extravagant five disc box set from Network, Stingray: The Complete Series Deluxe Edition,...

Soon, the series Stingray will get its release and I'm looking forward to that. Fireball XL5

It’s always a gratifying feeling when Silva screen produces another title in their successful Gerry Anderson collection. This time around, they have focused on the 1962-63 series, Fireball XL5 (SILLP1595).

The black & white puppet television series followed the missions of Fireball XL5, a vessel of the World Space Patrol in the year 2062. Commanded by Colonel Steve Zodiac, XL5 travels the universe encountering alien civilisations and defending planet Earth from interstellar threats. It was produced, like most other Anderson productions, in Supermarionation, using puppetry techniques that captured the imagination of a generation.

The Fireball XL5 soundtrack has been newly compiled, mastered and designed by the creative and committed team at Fanderson – The Official Gerry And Sylvia Anderson Appreciation Society.

The album features 24 tracks from 16 episodes, including the Fireball XL5 main theme and single version. In the opening theme,...

Before You See Downton Abbey, See These Movies and Shows
Sam Moffitt’s article about movies and shows was originally posted May 15th, 2015. In honor of the new hit movie version of Downton Abbey, We Are Movie Geeks is reposting this list

By rights I should hate the English. Seriously, my background is almost entirely Scots and Irish. I grew up hearing about the troubles the English gave to the Scots and Irish, both in school and from my parents.

Yet I do not, I love the English. How can I hate a country that gave us not only Monty Python but also Benny Hill and the Carry On Films? How can I bear any ill will to a country that gave us writers of the caliber of Ramsey Campbell, Brian Aldiss, Michael Moorcock and J. G Ballard? How can anyone hate a country that not only prizes eccentric behavior but encourages it? Take Mr. Kim Newman for instance, a...

Shane Rimmer obituary
Canadian actor who was the voice of Scott Tracy in Thunderbirds and specialised in American roles for British film and TV productions

Shane Rimmer, who has died aged 89, was a doughty Canadian character actor who, in a career of more than 50 years, carved a productive niche playing American roles in British productions.

While his was a recognisable face – its sturdy jaw, piercing eyes and creviced brow lent themselves well to cool-under-pressure control room operators, no-nonsense cops and salty officials – it was his voice work that embedded him indelibly into popular culture. As Scott Tracy, trusty pilot of the flagship International Rescue vessel Thunderbird 1 in Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s enduringly popular puppet series Thunderbirds (1965-66), he bravely saved lives with calm stoicism.

Brian Steele and Maxwell Jenkins in Perdus dans l'espace (2018)
Spaceship Design 101: How the Minds Behind ‘Star Trek’, ‘Lost in Space’, and ‘Black Mirror’ Reach The Stars
Brian Steele and Maxwell Jenkins in Perdus dans l'espace (2018)
It wasn’t easy coming up with fresh space ships for the rebooted “Star Trek Discovery” and “Lost in Space,” or the “Star Trek” riffs on “USS Callister” (“Black Mirror”) and Seth MacFarlane’s “The Orville.” After all, there’s cultural significance and legacy and immense pressure in creating what amounts to homes and playgrounds and battle arenas, with distinct shape languages that help define the looks of their shows.

Of course, “Star Trek” offers its own set of challenges and, with “Discovery,” it required a special Federation ship that was only a decade removed from the original Enterprise. For “Lost in Space,” they had a lot more artistic license in designing a futuristic Jupiter 2. However, for the USS Callister, the “Black Mirror” team had to steer clear of any direct references to “Star Trek” while still evoking its ’60s vibe. MacFarlane’s team, meanwhile, was tasked with coming up...

Review: Gerry And Sylvia Anderson's "U.F.O.: The Complete Series"; UK Blu-ray Release From Network
By Tim Greaves

With Christmas 1970 on the horizon, the UK’s thrilling new sci-fi TV show UFO was well underway. Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's first live-action series, it was set in the future and revolved around the activities of the Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organisation (Shado), a covert agency presided over by Commander Ed Straker (Ed Bishop) to fend off alien attacks on mankind. As a wide-eyed 8-year-old I was hooked and I can recall wishing two things. One was that I could have one of the Dinky Toys’ missile-firing Shado Interceptors, which I thought then (and still think now) was the coolest among the incredible array of vehicles that appeared in the show; I’d not be nearly as forgiving today as I was back then that Dinky had manufactured it in garish green, where the ‘real’ ones on TV were white. The other wish was that I...

Lrm Exclusive Interview: David Graham for Amazon’s Thunderbirds Are Go
The Thunderbirds are back.

Season Two of the revived Amazon’s Thunderbirds Are Go continues the adventures of the family of heroes, International Rescue. The series highlights the five brave Tracy brothers and their covert operative Kayo and how they pilot their remarkable, cutting-edge Thunderbird vehicles to perform near-impossible rescue mission, from the depths of the oceans to the highest reaches of space.

Produced by ITV Studios and Pukeko Pictures with Weta Workshop, the series is made with a mixture of CGI animation and live-action model sets—paying tribute to the old fans of the shows and attracting a new generation to the Thunderbirds.

Lrm had a phone interview earlier this month with voice actor David Graham, who is reprising his role as Agent Parker from the original series. We had an extensive talk over the show—both the original and the new show. It was also fun to reminisce...

Sylvia Anderson - producer, writer, and the voice of Thunderbirds' Lady Penelope - has died at the age of 88.

Some sad news to report this morning. Sylvia Anderson, best known perhaps as the voice of Lady Penelope in Thunderbirds, has died. She was 88 years old.

The BBC is reporting that she died after a short illness.

Anderson was a producer, writer and voice actress, best known for her work alongside her ex-husband, the late Gerry Anderson. They worked together on Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and Joe 90.

After the pair divorced, Sylvia Anderson worked for a time as head of programming for HBO in the UK. She had an extensive career, and she is survived by her son and daughter. Our thoughts are with them at what must be a difficult time. That said, we'd be thrilled if we'd achieved so much with 88 years. What a life.

Top Ten Tuesday – The Best Substitutes for Downton Abbey

Take Mr. Kim Newman for instance, a brilliant writer whose work appears regularly in Video WatchDog and Videoscope Mr. Newman dresses himself, has his hair and mustache styled and speaks in the manner of someone from the 19th Century!

Reggie Yates to host Thunderbirds documentary No Strings Attached
Reggie Yates will present Reggie & Thunderbirds - No Strings Attached - a behind-the-scenes documentary airing ahead of the TV series' reboot next month.

Self-confessed 'superfan' Yates will get a sneak preview of the Citv production, visiting the Weta Workshop studios in New Zealand where the show has been developed.

He will be seen at recording sessions in London where the likes of Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Rosamund Pike and Kayvan Novak voice the characters.

Yates also records lines with David Graham during the one-hour documentary.

A veteran of the Gerry Anderson original, Graham, who voices Lady Penelope's butler Parker, reprises the role in the rebooted show.

The former Radio 1 chart show host also joins fellow superfan David Baddiel at the recording of a special episode penned by the comedian, which features a cameo from Sylvia Anderson - series co-creator and the voice of the original Lady Penelope.

Thunderbirds Are Go! will land on April 15 on Citv.

Thunderbirds Are Go: Tracy brothers take to the skies in first trailer
ITV has debuted its first full-length trailer for Thunderbirds Are Go.

The revamp is based on the original '60s series, created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, and has been produced using a combination of CGI animation and live-action model work.

The cast includes Gone Girl's Rosamund Pike as Lady Penelope, and voice artist David Graham reprising his original role of Parker the chauffeur.

The voices of Kayvan Novak, Angel Coulby and Thomas Sangster will also feature in the series, which will launch on April 15 on Citv.

Novak, who plays Brains, told Digital Spy that the new Thunderbirds "works beautifully".

"I'm so excited to watch it, having been working on it for almost two years now," he said. "It's amazing the amount of effort going into it and I think they've really cracked it.

"All of the spaceships are still miniatures, and then they've created these CGI characters to live seamlessly within that,...

Meet Lady Penelope And Brains In New Thunderbirds Are Go! Images
Thunderbirds et l'odyssée du cosmos (1966)
The first look at the new take on the Tracey brothers – pilots of the various craft that make up International Rescue for the new Thunderbirds Are Go! series – arrived in January and caused, shall we say, divided opinions. That trend seems sure to continue with images of Lady Penelope, faithful butler/chauffeur Parker and technical whizz Brains. This new series, from the ITV Studios, Pukeko Pictures and the Weta team in New Zealand, blends regular model work with CG, anime-inflected versions of the characters in the hopes of smoothing out some of the weird transitions that used to occur between Gerry Anderson’s Supermarionation – which had puppets for most of the shots, then used real hands for close-ups.Gone Girl’s Rosamund Pike is providing the voice for Lady Penelope, taking over the job from Thunderbirds icon Sylvia Anderson, widow of Gerry. She hasn’t been forgotten though, as she...

Gerry Anderson final movie A Christmas Miracle to be finished by his son
Ray Barrett, David Graham, David Holliday, Shane Rimmer, Jeremy Wilkin, and Matt Zimmerman in Les sentinelles de l'air! (1965)
The late producer Gerry Anderson's final movie will be completed by his son Jamie Anderson.

Gerry - most famous for his work on Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet - began working on a project called A Christmas Miracle prior to his death in 2012.

The producer's battle with Alzheimer's disease left A Christmas Miracle unfinished, but now his son will revive the movie using computer animation.

A Christmas Miracle will tell the story of an invasion of aliens demanding that earth hand over Santa Claus.

Jamie is expected to pitch the project to investors at the British Film Institute in London on Wednesday (March 4).

Mark Woollard (Captain Scarlet) will direct A Christmas Miracle.

A new series based on Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's Thunderbirds franchise will also be premiering in April on ITV and Citv in the UK, in addition to a crowd-funded Firestorm project being in the works.

Thunderbirds Are Go! First pic of Lady Penelope, Parker & Brains
Lady Penelope, Parker and Brains are the next Thunderbirds Are Go! CG characters to be unveiled. Here they are...

No, not a promo for The Sims Sugar Daddy Expansion Pack, but our first look at the newly CGI Lady Penelope, Parker and dog in anticipation of ITV's Thunderbirds Are Go!, arriving on the channel this spring.

Lady Penelope is voiced by Oscar 2015 nominee Rosamund Pike, with David Graham from the original series voicing chauffeur Parker. We've yet to hear who'll be providing the voice of that snazzily dressed little pug.

Also released today is our first portrait of Brains, looking as if he wouldn't be a million miles out of place in a Shoreditch cereal bar if he'd only grow a beard. Kayvan Novak of Four Lions and Facejacker fame is lending his vocal chords to this one.

We've already seen Tracy Island and its eponymous brothers rendered in CGI.
