In case there’s any doubt in the wake of Superman, James Gunn confirms that the DC Universe’s take on Clayface is a horror film.
“Although it’s in the same universe, it’s a complete horror film,” Gunn told CBS Mornings.
“There’s not a company style. It’s not like every movie is gonna be like Superman,” he continues. “The artists and the directors and the writers that create each one will bring their own sense to it.”
Currently in pre-production, Clayface is expected to shoot later this summer for a September 11, 2026 theatrical release via Warner Bros.
James Watkins will direct from a script by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini.
It’s described as a Hollywood horror tale centering on a B-movie actor who injects himself with a substance to remain relevant, only to find out that he can reshape his face and form, becoming a walking piece of clay.

We have more coverage from James Gunn's chat with CBS Mornings, and this time, the DC studio chief is discussing Clayface, the upcoming Dcu feature film from director James Watkins (See No Evil).
James Gunn has emphasized that the DC Universe will aim to offer a wide variety of storytelling styles, ensuring each film feels unique.
He clarified that while the newly released Superman sets the tone for that character’s world, it shouldn’t be seen as a template for every DC Studios project. Each entry in the Dcu is expected to stand on its own, bringing something fresh and distinct.
"We've got Clayface, which is a totally different thing. Although it's in the same universe, it's a complete horror film. That's one of the things we want to do- there's no company style. It's not like every movie is going to be like Superman. The artists- the directors and the writers,...

A new Clayface movie is officially on the way, and fresh reports are giving fans a clearer picture of what to expect. According to Nexus Point News, the film will tell a dark and disturbing story about a struggling Hollywood actor who ends up turning into a monster made of clay.
DC Studios has described the film as an R-rated body horror that will show the tragic origins of one of Batman’s classic villains.
The movie was originally thought up by horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan, known for Doctor Sleep and The Haunting of Hill House. Flanagan first became interested in Clayface back in 2021 and kept pitching his idea to DC. In March 2023, Flanagan and his producing partner Trevor Macy met with DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran to talk about the project.
Reports say that from the start, the idea was for Clayface to be more than just a typical villain.

A new Clayface movie is officially happening, and now fresh details are coming out about what fans can expect from the film. New report from Nexus Point News claims Clayface will be a dark, body horror story about a struggling actor who ends up becoming a monster made entirely of clay.

In 2023, he met with DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran to discuss the project. Interestingly, Clayface won’t be a typical villain in this film, which is different from how he’s usually shown in the comics. Robert Pattinson’s The Batman was a sobering experience for everyone involved in how effortlessly beautiful his Dark Knight would look when placed within James Gunn‘s Dcu. As a young, amateur, and budding superhero with his whole arc left untouched, Battinson would be the perfect counter to David Corenswet‘s bright-eyed and optimistic Superman.
But it was not meant to be. One of the first acts from the executive desk of James Gunn after his appointment as the head of DC Studios was to relegate Pattinson’s Batman to an Elseworlds universe. Now, a new Clayface update makes things even more bizarre for DC as the villain effortlessly migrates from The Batman‘s universe to the Dcu with no strings attached whatsoever.

Last month, we learned that Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries will play the lead character in DC Studios' Clayface. The movie is based on a story by The Fall of the House of Usher's Mike Flanagan (Drive writer Hossein Amini penned the latest draft), with Speak No Evil director James Watkins at the helm.
Clayface was not among the projects announced by DC Studios at the start of 2023, making it a surprise addition to the "Chapter 1 - Gods and Monsters" slate. However, for James Gunn, it's all about story when it comes to which Dcu projects receive the green light, and this one fit the bill in the filmmaker and studio executive's eyes.
Nexus Point News has shared some additional details today, confirming that Clayface will revolve around Matt Hagen, with an amalgamation of his and Basil Karlo's comic book backstory.

DC Studios head James Gunn may have revealed his first choice to play Wonder Woman.
In a recent interview with Extra, the “Guardians of the Galaxy” director discussed “Hit Man” star Adria Arjona and teased where he sees her fitting in to his revamped DC Universe.
“I follow Adria on Instagram, but everybody came out [and thought], ‘He just followed her, that means she’s Wonder Woman,'” Gunn shared. “She’d be a great Wonder Woman, by the way.”
“She was in a movie that I made seven years ago,” he added. “We’ve been friends and have known each other since that time. I followed her then, I didn’t just follow her.”
Earlier in June, Gunn told Entertainment Weekly that a new feature film following Wonder Woman is “being written right now.” He added that the movie would come in addition to an HBO series about Wonder Woman’s home of Themyscira.

Here’s another update on DC Studios’ Clayface project, which is currently in active development as it moves towards production.

James Gunn is now synonymous with superheroes, not just because of his stint as director, but also as the co-ceo of DC Studios. However, before he ever directed the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, The Suicide Squad, or the upcoming Superman, he made his directorial debut with 2006's Slither.
The release was a body horror that ended up becoming a cult classic, despite flopping in theaters. Since his responsibilities lie with DC Studios, he's now found a way to connect his love for comics with body horror through Clayface. During an appearance on the DC Studios Showcase podcast, Gunn teased what to expect from the upcoming Clayface, which will likely be R-rated.

DC Studios is heading into horror territory with one of its upcoming movies, and it’s not holding back. The film, Clayface, is being made as a body horror movie and is expected to carry an R rating. James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, confirmed this during a recent episode of the DC Studios Showcase podcast.
The idea for the film wasn’t originally part of DC’s main universe plans. But that changed when director Mike Flanagan pitched his vision for Clayface, which impressed the studio enough to add it to the Dcu slate.
Gunn described the project as a smart and intense horror film and said it’s the kind of movie he’s excited about. “It’s rated R … it’s not anything now because the MPA has to watch it, but it’s most likely rated R. It’s pretty intense,” he said.

DC Studios is getting ready to dive into horror with one of its upcoming films, Clayface. James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, recently spoke about the movie during the DC Studios Showcase podcast and confirmed that it’s going to be a full-on body horror film, and they’re aiming for an R rating. Earlier this week, Tom Rhys Harries was cast in the main role.
DC Studios had been considering a number of rising British talents, including Jack O’Connell, Tom Blyth, and George MacKay, before locking in Harries for the gig. According to DC Studios co-head James Gunn, it wasn’t a rushed decision.
Gunn explained that the film wasn’t originally part of the DC Universe lineup, but director Mike Flanagan came in with a pitch that changed their minds.
According to Gunn, the story was so strong and unique that it earned its place in the new Dcu.

Dcu has found its Clayface, and interestingly, it’s none of the four actors that were initially reported to be the frontrunners, which involved Jack O’Connell, Tom Blyth, Leo Woodall, and George MacKay. Instead, James Gunn and co. have gone with a fresh face, Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries, potentially in the shoes of Matt Hagen.
While not the most obvious choice, especially given the speculations surrounding more veteran performers, their decision to lean toward a relatively unknown actor is interesting nonetheless.

The Flanagan-penned Clayface movie is currently undergoing revisions, with writer Hossein Amini (Drive) coming on board to revise the script. Flanagan had recently revealed that his script was heavily inspired by the character’s appearance in “Batman: The Animated Series,” but there’s no telling how much that original script is going to change along the way.

The DC Universe has finally found its lead for the Clayface movie. The Dcu's Chapter 1: "Gods and Monsters" has multiple movies and TV shows in the works for some of DC's most iconic superheroes, and one of Batman's villains will be getting his own film, with DC Studios currently in pre-production on Clayface. While not initially announced as part of the studio's slate during DC's original January 2023 announcement, Clayface became a surprise addition, and now the film is finally closer to becoming a reality.
According to Deadline, Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries has been cast to play the titular role in the Clayface movie, which is set to be directed by James Atkins, based on a script by Mike Flanagan. James Gunn also confirmed the Clayface casting, as he shared the following statement on Harries joining the Dcu:

One of the most intriguing projects in James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC Universe is director James Watkins' body horror movie "Clayface." Based on a script by horror maestro Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini ("Drive"), the film is slated to begin production this summer ... and now, we know who's playing the titular, shape-shifting monstrosity.
According to Deadline, Clayface will be portrayed by none other than Tom Rhys Harries, a relative unknown whom the powers that be have deemed ready to mold the character in his image. Casting a comparatively fresh face in the role is a smart move. Since the masses aren't familiar with Rhys Harries' game yet, he's not saddled with the kind of expectations a more established name with a particular acting style might face. This is a major benefit for a character as malleable as Clayface; after all, there have been so many versions of...

When it came to casting the lead in DC Studios’ next big movie Clayface, the studio went with a fresh face, that being Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries.
The actor from the Uma Thurman-starring Apple TV series Suspicion and such movies as Uberto Pasolini’s The Return (starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche), the Gerard Butler action title Kandahar and Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen, landed the role from a competitive list of British thespians that included 28 Years Later‘s Jack O’Connell, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes‘ Tom Blyth and 1917‘s George MacKay.
The movie, from Speak No Evil director James Watkins, is the next big project for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios after next summer’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, scheduled for release on September 11, 2026. Clayface will be shooting at Warner Bros Leavesden studio in the UK.

Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries is set to star in the title role of “Clayface” for DC Studios, TheWrap has learned.
James Watkins, who directed last year’s remake of the Danish thriller “Speak No Evil” for Universal, is set to direct. Screenwriter Hossein Amini, best known for scripting 2011’s “Drive,” wrote the most recent draft of “Clayface.” Mike Flanagan wrote the previous draft of the script.
The film will be produced by Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris, with production commencing this fall.
Known as one of Batman’s most unique villains in his rogues gallery, Clayface was originally introduced in the vintage DC Comics as Basil Karlo, a horror movie actor who went mad. He later gained the ability to shape-shift and transform his body into any form by turning himself into living clay. According to an insider, the Matt Hagen version of the character will appear in the film.

Supermandirector James Gunn recently opened up about how one of the upcoming DC Universe projects recently got the axe -- but it's actually good news for fans anxiously waiting to see where the new films are headed.
Speaking with Rolling Stone, Gunn talked about the reasons for canceling an unnamed DC film project, with it being revealed that one of the biggest rules he's made for the Dcu is that finished scripts must be quality. "Yeah. We just killed a project. Everybody wanted to make the movie. It was greenlit, ready to go. The screenplay wasn’t ready. And I couldn’t do a movie where the screenplay’s not good," Gunn shared.
While this may seem like disappointing news at first, Gunn went on to talk about how some of the other DC Universe projects that are currently in development didn't face similar problems. "[W]e've been really lucky so far,...

It looks like Diana Prince is returning to theaters.
A new feature film about DC superhero Wonder Woman is “being written right now,” says DC Studios co-chief James Gunn in an interview with EW. The movie would be in addition to an HBO series about Wonder Woman’s home of Themyscira, which Gunn says is “slow moving, but it’s moving.”
The film would be a fresh start for the character, who was played on the big screen by Gal Gadot in 2017’s “Wonder Woman” and “Justice League,” 2020’s “Wonder Woman 1984,” 2021’s “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” and in a cameo in 2023’s “The Flash.” But Gunn and co-chief Peter Safran’s plan to reboot the DC Universe means that Gadot will not play the character moving forward. (A representative for DC Studios did not immediately reply to a request for comment.)

The comic book movies genre is a guaranteed box-office interest. However, the one subgenre it has never seemed to master is horror.
Before Mike Flanagan, the absolute ingenue of streaming horror, wrote the idea for DC Studios Clayface project, there was no hope for an authentic scary superhero film.
Now, he's here. Clayface sounds fascinating, as in a firm reason for superhero fans and horror fans alike to get excited. In an exclusive with ComicBook promoting his new project with Stephen King, The Life of Chuck, Flanagan chatted up his work with DC Studios. More importantly, he talked about his inspiration: "Feat of Clay", the gripping two-part episode of Batman: The Animated Series.
Although he's not directing the movie, the screenplay and vision is Flanagan's. He shared that DC Studios is working on some revisions to the script but "really hopes it remains true to the spirit of what [he] wanted it to be.

We may soon learn who DC Studios has chosen to play Clayface. In THR’s Heat Vision newsletter, a little tidbit confirmed that George MacKay (1917), Tom Blyth (The Hunger Games; The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes), Jack O’Connell (Sinners), and Leo Woodall (The White Lotus) have each read for the leading role in Clayface.
However, one of those names may already be out, as a source told THR that “the four have now become three,” but didn’t specify which actor.
Hossein Amini (Drive) was brought onboard last month to rewrite Mike Flanagan’s script. James Watkins (Speak No Evil) will direct the Clayface movie, which will be produced by Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris.

De entre ellos saldrá el elegido. El rodaje está previsto para finales de este año.
Para quienes no estén familiarizados, Clayface (o Cara de Barro) es uno de los villanos clásicos de Batman en el universo DC. DC character Clayface is getting a live action movie written by horror master Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, Doctor Sleep, Life of Chuck), though it’s important to note that Flanagan himself won’t be directing the movie. James Watkins (Eden Lake, The Woman in Black, Speak No Evil) will be in the director’s chair for this one.
It’s equally important to note that the Flanagan-penned Clayface movie is currently undergoing revisions, with writer Hossein Amini (Drive) coming on board to revise the script. It’s impossible to know at this stage how much of Flanagan’s vision will remain in tact, with Flanagan himself pondering the very same question in a new chat with ComicBook.com.

Batman: The Animated Series made its debut back in 1992, and the fourth and fifth episodes of the show were a two-parter called Feat of Clay, which showed “the transformation of a disfigured actor into the villain known as Clayface.” Back in 2021, filmmaker Mike Flanagan let it be known on social media that he was interested in making a “standalone horror/thriller/tragedy” movie that would center on the Clayface character. A while after that, he confirmed that he had met with veteran DC movie producer Jon Berg to pitch a “horror-leaning” take on Clayface, as well as ideas for the DC properties Scarecrow, Justice League Dark, and Constantine. The meeting “kind of went nowhere.” But then, in March of 2023, Deadline broke the news that Flanagan had scheduled another Clayface pitch meeting, this time with DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran. And at the end of last year, it...

Back in December of 2024, Clayface, a movie about the Batman villain of the same name with a script written by Mike Flanagan was announced and streamlined. It was given a release date of September 11, 2026.
Many fans found this news to be surprising. At the time, rumors were circulating that Clayface would be the villain, or a villain, of The Batman Part II, causing very few to suspect a Clayface movie was in the works. On top of that, there wasn’t and still isn’t an actor announced to portray Batman. Batman’s Dcu movie The Brave and the Bold directed by The Flash’s Andy Muschietti also did not have a release date. The announcement of Clayface took nearly everyone by surprise because, frankly, it’s an odd but welcome choice.
Now, Mike Flanagan has spoken to ComicBook.com about his inspiration for the film, and fans are going to absolutely love it.

The new DC Universe is well underway, with "Creature Commandos" having already premiered on Max and James Gunn's "Superman" hitting theaters this summer. But it's not just the obvious DC Comics A-listers making their way to the big screen in the new Dcu, as some interesting, lesser-known characters are going to take the spotlight as well. One key example is "Clayface," a new movie that is set to arrive next year and will focus on the "Batman" villain of the same name. While no actor has been cast as of this writing, the perfect candidate has just emerged.

The whole Clayface movie announcement feels a bit like a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat before even showing you the hat. With Superman barely out of his metaphorical cradle (arriving in theaters this July), DC Studios—perplexingly, if not provocatively—hit the gas on a solo film centered on Clayface: a shape-shifting Batman antagonist.
On paper, the timing is a head-scratcher. The new Batman hasn’t been introduced, and the Dcu is still tiptoeing through infancy, yet this new entry has leapfrogged more central icons. Why? The answer comes down to a script. And not just any script: Mike Flanagan’s script. Yes, the architect of the grief-soaked nightmares pitched the project to DC heads Gunn and Peter Safran back in 2023.
James Watkins, known for his unnerving work on Speak No Evil, has since been handed the director’s baton, with screenwriter Hossein Amini (Drive) now polishing Flanagan’s original draft.

Confirmed: DC Studios is reworking outgoing director Mike Flanagan’s Clayface script, as Hossein Amini takes over writing duties.
Last week, we learned that DC Studios was planning to rewrite Mike Flanagan’s script for a Clayface film, erasing (although we don’t know to exactly what degree) the horror maestro’s take on the tragic villain who originated in the pages of the Batman comic books.
The story in short: Flanagan – a filmmaker famed for his horror storytelling – pitched the studio an idea for a Clayface film that would presumably lean into the character’s potential as a horror monster. Think The Substance crossed with Phantom Of The Opera and you find yourself in a space ripe with storytelling potential; the Clayface character exists in several different iterations. We’re not exactly sure that’s how Flanagan’s take would have gone – and now we may never know.

According to The Wrap, Hossein Amini will rewrite Clayface for DC Studios. Mike Flanagan, who wrote the first pass on the script, initially brought the project to life, but recent rumours have claimed that a potential “page 1 rewrite” is underway. How much of Flanagan’s script will be rewritten remains to be seen, but production is still slated to kick off this October in the U.K.
Amini is best known for writing Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive and, more recently, several episodes of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. James Watkins (Speak No Evil) will direct the Clayface movie, which will be produced by Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris.

Fans eager to see Mike Flanagan’s Clayface movie will apparently not be getting the celebrated filmmaker’s DC horror project exactly as he wrote it, as it seems Drive and The Wings of the Dove screenwriter Hossein Amini has been drafted in to rewrite the movie. While it has not been revealed the extent of those rewrites, it seems likely that they will be substantial enough to mean Mike Flanagan fans will not be seeing the movie that the Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep director intended.
According to The Wrap, the villain-centric movie will now be getting an overhaul before cameras roll in the U.K. this October under the direction of James Watkins. Flanagan has been incredibly successful in the last decade as the creator of several incredible series at Netflix, including Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher, and the aforementioned The Haunting of Hill House.

With Sgt. Rock shelved by DC Studios, there were concerns that Clayface might be next. Well, there's a positive update today as a new writer has boarded the upcoming Dcu movie.
Mike Flanagan wrote a script for the low-budget horror flick, with Speak No Evil director James Watkins set to direct. Now, The Wrap reveals that Hossein Amini, best known for penning 2011's Drive, is doing a rewrite.
With so much hype surrounding Flanagan's screenplay and this being a longtime passion project for the filmmaker, it's a little strange that his script is being rewritten.
However, we reported last week that he only wrote a bare bones screenplay, leaving DC Studios eager to find someone who could do a page 1 rewrite. That appears to be where Amini comes in, likely because Flanagan remains busy with multiple other projects. His other recent credits include four episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
