MARK A. ALTMAN is a television and motion picture writer/producer/director who is currently the showrunner/executive producer of the upcoming adaptation of the bestselling book series, Deathlands. Previously, he served as showrunner of the sci-fi adventure series, Pandora (The CW/Amazon Prime), Co-Executive Producer of The Librarians (TNT), Agent X (TNT), Castle (ABC) and Necessary Roughness among others.
Altman recently wrote and directed the hit CW documentary special, Best Christmas Movies Ever, which premiered in December 2024. He wrote and produced the critically acclaimed CW docu-series, Greatest Geek Year Ever: 1982, spotlighting the legendary motion pictures of the year 1982, which recently debuted on Blu-Ray and DVD as a #1 bestseller on the Amazon documentary charts. His first motion picture was the award winning, Free Enterprise, starring William Shatner and Eric McCormack, which he wrote and produced and for which he won the WGA Award for Best New Writer at the AFI Los Angeles Film Festival prior to its theatrical release. He is also a producer of the House of the Dead series, based on the videogame from Sega, released by Lionsgate. In addition, he produced director Craig Mazin (The Last Of Us, Chernobyl) and writer James Gunn's (Guardians Of The Galaxy, Superman) sophomore feature film, The Specials.
His bestselling two-volume book, The 50 Year Mission: The Complete Uncensored, Unauthorized History of Star Trek, was released by St. Martin's Press in hardcover to unanimous critical acclaim including raves in The Wall Street Journal, Booklist and Publishers Weekly. His follow-up on Battlestar Galactica, So Say We All, was released in hardcover by Tor Forge in 2018. His oral history of the James Bond films, Nobody Does It Better, was released in 2020 by Macmillan. His most recent volume was They Shouldn't Have Killed His Dog: The Complete Oral History Of John Wick and Gun-Fu.
In addition, Altman has sold numerous pilots including to Sony Pictures Television, USA Networks, El Rey Networks and, most recently, developed pilots for Syfy, Beacon Television and NextCypher Productions. Altman has also sold feature scripts to such studios as Dreamworks SKG, Beacon Pictures and Constantin Films. He produced the big budget film adaptation of the bestselling video game, DOA: Dead Or Alive, which was released by Dimension Films.
Altman is also the host of several podcasts including Inglorious Treksperts, one of the largest and most successful podcasts devoted to Star Trek and produced and curated four consecutive days of programming at the largest Star Trek convention in the world in Las Vegas on the branded Inglorious Treksperts Stage. He also co-hosts The 4:30 Movie in which a group of industry professionals curate a fantasy theme week of classic films as well as The Kids Stay In The Podcast where he discusses movies with his son.
He is a former journalist as well in which he has contributed to such newspapers and magazines as The Boston Globe, Written By, L'Cinefage, Film Threat, The Guardian, The Boston Edge, Cult TV, Computer Player, Brandeis Magazine and many others, including Cinefantastique for which he launched their independent film division, CFQ Films, which produced numerous successful genre features for DVD and VOD release.
He has also written numerous comic books for DC and Malibu Comics as well as graphic novels, including issues of Star Trek and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. With Steve Kriozere, he co-wrote the critically acclaimed graphic novel Elvis Van Helsing and The Unknowns, which was optioned by RatPac as a motion picture. His most recent graphic novel, Looking Glass, is being adapted into a TV series by NextCypher Productions.
Altman has spoken at numerous industry events and conventions, including ShowBiz Expo as well as the Variety/Final Draft Screenwriters Panel at the Cannes Film Festival. He was a juror at the prestigious Sitges Film Festival in Barcelona, Spain. He has been a frequent guest and panelist at numerous conventions around the world, including Comic-Con held annually in San Diego, CA as well as a two-time juror for the Comic-Con Film Festival as well as Galaxycon/Nightmare Weekend for which he serves as a frequent guest and moderator. In addition to being a graduate of the Writers Guild of America Showrunners Training Program, he is also a member of the Television Academy.
