East Forest's Psychedelic Music Doc 'Music For Mushrooms' Trailer
Image
"These are for everyone's healing." Area 23a has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary titled Music For Mushrooms, set for a limited theatrical release this fall. The film follows the personal journey of the musician / psychonaut known as East Forest from Portland, Oregon. The film documents Trevor Oswalt's personal journey as he explores the intersection of music & psychedelics, using this very powerful combo to facilitate transformative healing in a world increasingly in need. Through deeply intimate encounters with individuals whose lives have been profoundly altered by these experiences, the doc film serves as a poignant exploration (and hopefully conversation starter) of the true healing potential of art, spirituality, nature, and psychedelics. It is a resonant ode to the great power of introspection and transformation in an era marked by widespread anxiety and disconnection. The cast includes a diverse array of subjects from across the globe including spiritual leader Ram Dass,...

Lost: The Island's Entire Timeline, Explained
Image
The island was the primary setting of the TV series Lost, and it had a long and fascinating timeline before the passengers of Oceanic Flight 815 ever arrived. So much more than just a simple deserted island, the location was something of a character on the show, and its complicated history involved ancient civilizations, fantastical magic, and science fiction technology. Though the show never revealed all the answers about the island's origins and past, it was clear from the outset that it was a truly unusual place with its own mystical qualities that defied logic.

Lost gave viewers many glimpses of the island throughout time, and it never failed to inspire intrigue and a fair amount of suspense as well. As the cancelation of 1899 has proven, Lost was a one-of-a-kind show that warped viewers' minds and delivered an experience that cannot be replicated. Because a lot of the island's history was fleshed out,...

‘Russian Doll’s Natasha Lyonne & Amy Poehler Talk Going Deeper In Time & Character In Season 2 — Contenders TV
Image
Russian Doll Season 2 introduces a new time bending aspect to the Netflix comedy, which also speaks Nadia’s (Natasha Lyonne) new life crisis. Lyonne and co-creator/EP Amy Poehler spoke about the upcoming season on a Deadline Contenders panel on Saturday.

In season 1, Nadia repeated her birthday every time she died. In season 2, she travels back in time.

Contenders TV: Deadline’s Complete Coverage

“Season 1 is very much about a character who moves from nihilism and [being] a lone wolf, finds a connection and therefore a way out,” Lyonne said. “Season 2 is sort of a deeper level, a smaller doll in which the question is: now that I’ve figured out that catch, how do I go about living? What does it mean to have a meaningful life where you show up and are a participating member of society?”

Lyonne, who also co-created the show and executive produces, wrote and directed many season 2 episodes.

Parker Millsap on Why Missed Notes Make the Most Joyful Music
Image
Parker Millsap has earned a reputation as a spiritually minded, if not outright spiritual, songwriter. The Oklahoma native described his last record as “gospel sex music” and riffed on yogi Ram Dass’s influential book Be Here Now for the title of his new album: Be Here Instead.

“Stop looking ahead/be here instead/this is the prayer,” Millsap sings in the hypnotic album track “Now, Here,” a song he wrote before the pandemic. When he revisited the lyrics during pre-production for Be Here Instead, it revealed a new meaning.

She’s trying to trace just how far back her love of Abba goes, which brings her to the Nineties pre-teen clothing store. “Everything was flower power and bell-bottoms, and I feel like ‘Dancing Queen’ was huge at all the birthday parties. Ram Dass Rides the Holy-Man’s Circuit
Ram Dass
This story was originally published in the April 22nd, 1976, issue of “Rolling Stone.”

You’D Think That Baba Ram Dass, who had been a Harvard psychology professor and psychedelic drug researcher in his former incarnation as Dr. Richard Alpert, Ph.D., would know all about mind games by now. And yet the toothache had felt real enough, building until the nerve seemed a snaking electric wire, making it all but impossible for him to fix his attention on the tip of his nose and watch his breath go in and out,...

Spiritual Teacher Ram Dass Profiled in 'Becoming Nobody' Doc Trailer
"Each of us must be true to ourselves to hear, 'what is our unique way through?' Because if you get phony-holy, it ends up kicking you in the butt." Love Serve Remember Films with Google Empathy Lab present the official trailer for a documentary titled Becoming Nobody, from musician / director Jamie Catto. This is the quintessential portal to Ram Dass' life and teachings, taking us through his history and into his mind. "In Becoming Nobody, historic clips balance an engaging conversation with director Jamie Catto. We come to understand how our old roles and disguises become increasingly burdensome. The film captures a loving man full of joy, wit, honesty and wisdom, at ease in conversation while sharing his considerable pains and pleasures. These life experiences that have freed him from the attachments of his 'somebody-ness' have transformed him into the radiant soul." Looks like a vital film for all those exploring alternative spirituality.

Movies New to Netflix in April: ‘Seven,’ ‘The Iron Giant,’ ‘Scarface’ and More
April showers might bring May flowers, but what to do during the rainy season? Why, modern movie-lover does when the weather outside is frightful, curl up with some Netflix. (Maybe get some chill in there, if you’re lucky). While not the most romantic of movies, classic crime lovers can enjoy Brian De Palma’s “Scarface,” which lands on the platform next month. After you get your fix of an infinitely quotable and smoldering Al Pacino, you can jump ahead to the equally as disturbing David Fincher classic, “Seven.”

A few tear-jerking Oscar winners also head to Netflix in April, including the Nicole Kidman, Renée Zellweger-starring “Cold Mountain,” and Roberto Benigni’s WWII drama “Life Is Beautiful.” For lighter fare, check out “The Iron Giant,” or both live-action “The Flinstones” movies (for my Rosie O’Donnell die-hards).

Hopefully, that’s enough to keep you busy until May. Check out...

2018 Oscar Predictions: Best Documentary Short
Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405 (2016)
The Academy Documentary branch has winnowed down the eligible Short Subject contenders from 77 to ten films vying for five Oscar nominations. They have played countless film festivals, but had to win an award at a qualifying festival to be eligible.

The New York Times Op-Docs scored three entries, all viewable in full below: moving “116 Cameras” introduces a holocaust survivor willing to give testimony; “Alone” tells the story of a woman left behind when her fiancé goes to prison; and “Ten Meter Tower” hilariously reveals the reactions of a series of people trying to make themselves jump.

Last year Netflix won the Oscar for Syria documentary “White Helmets,” which was easily viewed on the site. This year’s entry, opioid epidemic expose “Heroine(e),” is also strong enough to win. “Edith + Eddie” is a heart-tugger about a bi-racial elderly couple struggling to stay together.

The 10 films are listed below in alphabetical order by title,...

Exclusive: How This Robert Redford-Narrated Doc Went From Self-Distribution to Finding a Home
Most movies produced independently hit theaters after they find a distributor, unless they’re self-released. But “Dying to Know,” a documentary narrated by Robert Redford,” is going to have it both ways. Abramorama has acquired the U.S. theatrical rights to the film after its initial grassroots screenings.

The doc focuses on former Harvard psychology professors Richard Alpert and Timothy Leary. A historical biopic that director-producer Gay Dillingham first began working on in 1995, the film chronicles the lives of the longtime friends and icons of the U.S. counterculture movement, both of whom were dismissed from Harvard in 1963 for researching and experimenting with psychedelic drugs including LSD.

After being fired, Alpert traveled to India to become a renowned spiritual teacher, changing his name to Ram Dass and writing the hugely popular book “Be Here Now” about spirituality, yoga and meditation. Leary became an LSD advocate who was famously called “the...

Paul Walker at an event for Fast & Furious 4 (2009)
Michelle Rodriguez Says She's Jealous Paul Walker Died First
Paul Walker at an event for Fast & Furious 4 (2009)
The unexpected and untimely death of Paul Walker came as a shock to fans. But it truly devastated his Fast and Furious franchise co-stars. Vin Diesel has been quite vocal about expressing his grief, and will still post the random music video in Paul Walker's honor. Now, for the first time, Michelle Rodriguez is opening up about the actor's death. And in turn, she's said some seemingly crazy things. Particularly the fact that she's not so much sad as she is jealous, because Paul Walker died first.

Paul Walker unexpectedly died in a car accident that happened over the Thanksgiving holiday back in 2013. He was in the midst of shooting his final scenes for the sequel Furious 7, which co-starred Michelle Rodriguez. The movie was halted at that time, and reworked so that Paul Walker's Brian O'Conner character could be written out of the franchise without having to cancel the movie altogether.

Tim Robbins in L'Échelle de Jacob (1990)
You're Already Dead: Celebrating 25 years of 'Jacob's Ladder'
Tim Robbins in L'Échelle de Jacob (1990)
"Eckhart saw Hell too. He said: The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that won't let go of life, your memories, your attachments. They burn them all away. But they're not punishing you, he said. They're freeing your soul. So, if you're frightened of dying and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth." -- Louis (Danny Aiello) in "Jacob's Ladder" I first viewed "Jacob's Ladder" on VHS several years after its release in theaters, when it received a lukewarm response from audiences (it grossed around $26 million by the end of its run) and received a polarizing response from critics: Roger Ebert called it "powerfully written, directed and acted" while The Washington Post's Hal Hinson charged it with being "garbled and cliched."  My initial reaction to...

It begins in 1970, when young musician Kagel turned down the lead singer slot in the band that would become Blue Oyster Cult. He sold all his possessions and moved from the New York suburbs to the Himalayan foothills in search of happiness and a little-known saint named Neem Karoli Baba (Maharaj-ji).

George Harrison and The Beatles in Quatre Garçons dans le vent (1964)
How George Harrison Changed The Way We Believe
George Harrison and The Beatles in Quatre Garçons dans le vent (1964)
By Steve Rabey

Religion News Service

(Rns) As the lead guitarist of the world's biggest rock band and a prolific song writer, the Beatles' George Harrison has secured his place in pop culture history. But his greatest legacy may be the way his decades-long spiritual quest shaped the ways the West looks at God, gurus and life.

Harrison, who died of cancer in 2001 at age 58, was an intensely private global superstar. He's now in the spotlight again, thanks to a coffee-table book by his widow Olivia and a new Martin Scorsese documentary on HBO.

Both projects are titled "Living in the Material World," a Hindu-inspired phrase Harrison chose for a 1973 song that illuminates his theology and sense of artistic vocation:

"Got a lot of work to do / Try to get a message through / And get back out of this material world."

Harrison discovered Eastern religion through his love for Eastern music,...

'Ringer' star Nestor Carbonell speculates Machado's 'hidden agenda,' promises 'incredible cliffhanger'
Few actors are as well-trained in the art of keeping secrets as Nestor Carbonell.

Most recently playing eternally youthful Richard Alpert on "Lost" and Mayor Anthony Garcia in Christopher Nolan's "Batman" trilogy, the 43-year-old TV veteran has found a fitting home on the spoiler-free set of the CW's "Ringer."

"Between 'Lost' and the 'Dark Knight,' I've learned to take a deep breath before answering a question in case I give something away," Carbonell tells Zap2it. He's finding it easier to stay quiet on "Ringer," though -- mostly because he doesn't have many answers yet. "Every time I crack open a script, I have no idea where it's going."

Carbonell says he's in a very similar place as the fans, slowly putting the pieces together. And unlike co-star Kris Polaha, he says producers didn't even give him much of a background his character, Agent Victor Machado.

Magic Trip – The Review
It’s likely that most folks became aware of the hippie movement because of the Woodstock music festival in the late 1960′s. Surely these peace-loving flower children didn’t spring from that mushy, muddy ground fully formed. Did they emerge earlier in the decade? Perhaps they were an off-shoot of the espresso-drinking, bongo-playing beatniks of the 1950′s. Well, a brand new documentary culled from some very old ( about fifty years ) home movie footage directed by Alex Gibney ( Enron:the Smartest Guys In The Room ) and Alison Eastwood attempts to answer some of those questions. For a groovy history lesson hop about the Merry Pranksters’ bus and take a Magic Trip.

The film begins with a look at celebrated author Ken Kesey. Old high school yearbook photos paint him as a real straight arrow jock type. But then he decided to become a writer and penned the classic novel “One Flew Over...

The Walking Dead Casting News: A Metal Zombie
Or we could have gone with “A Zombie with Anthrax.” Ah well. the important thing is that guitarist/comic book author Scott Ian has a new credit to add to his already impressively cool cv: zombie. Technically, “walker” – he’ll be playing a member of the undead in the new season of The Walking Dead, as he recently announced on Twitter:

Scott_Ian Scott Ian

What have I wanted to do since 1978? Be a Zombie!!! Full story on my day on Walking Dead coming later!!!

and he attached this photo:

Add this to his tweets about seeing Richard Alpert at Lax (he’s a Lost fan), starting out his day with Vivaldi and Mozart, and not yet blogging about The Walking Dead on his new site http://scott-ian.com/ because he didn’t know “the Dr. Who thing was on tonight” and it becomes even more obvious why the man is so popular.

"Ringer" Star Sarah Michelle Gellar Slays With Her Charm
Sarah Michelle Gellar

Because I have a "thing" for Sarah Michelle Gellar, I must admit that I came into the Ringer panel at Comic Con as a biased spectator. While I obviously don't harbor any sexual longing for her, during her years as a '90s teen icon I still developed something of a platonic crush, first during her run on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and later with roles in films like I Know What You Did Last Summer and Cruel Intentions.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to make the Comic-Con screening of the pilot, so I have no idea whether or not it was any good (though I've heard raves from the rest of the AfterElton.com staff). However, the plot, which has Gellar playing a dual role as estranged twin sisters Bridget/Siobhan, sounds intriguing enough.

Bridget is the recovering alcoholic on the run from the mob, who takes over wealthy,...

Men of CW's Ringer Talk Sarah Michelle Gellar, Lost Love, Buffy Comparisons at Comic-Con
Sarah Michelle Gellar at an event for 2012 Golden Globe Awards (2012)
Sarah Michelle Gellar’s return to series television for the first time since Buffy the Vampire Slayer creates extra-high expectations for Ringer, a noir thriller that will debut on The CW on Sept. 13. But that’s okay with her costar Nestor Carbonell. “They should be,” says the actor, who knows a little something about successful serialized dramas thanks to his role as Lost‘s Richard Alpert.

Comic-Con Q&A: The Cast of 'Ringer' Talks About Their Surprising New Show (Video)
Sarah Michelle Gellar in Ringer (2011)
Filed under: Comic-Con, Celebrity Interviews, Stay Tuned

At Thursday's 'Ringer' panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Sarah Michelle Gellar said the surprises in the show were what drew her back to TV.

"I realized it was the first time in a really long time that I had been surprised [by something I'd read]," Gellar said of the drama-thriller, in which she plays twin sisters with double the secrets.

[Read our full recap of the 'Ringer' panel &

We caught up with the cast -- including Gellar, Nestor Carbonell (who plays a cop), Ioan Gruffud (who plays the husband of one of the sisters) and Kristoffer Polaha (a man with a romantic interest in that same sister) -- before their panel to hear more about the show.

Comic-Con 2011: Ringer Coverage and Panel
Well, we finally made it!  Hours of waiting on line for Ballroom 20 (and a quick glimpse of Nestor Carbonell peeking his head out of the press room), but we'd brave anything for Sarah Michelle Gellar.

That's right; we're at the Ringer panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2011, on hand to give you everything we caught from the new serie

Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none Sarah Michelle Gellar is thrilled to be back partying at comic-con, but Ioan Gruffudd's favorite moment as a newbie is seeing other people in blue spandex. Eric Charmelo says that three seasons of the series have been conceived, and Bridget will "maybe" know more about what happened to Siobahn by the end of Season One. The first season focuses heavily on Bridget's story, but plays with time and perspective in that you see Siobahn and Bridget in flashbacks quite a bit. Ioan Gruffudd's...

San Diego Comic Con 2011: Artwork From Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Ringer!
Entertainment Weekly have just debuted Comic Con promotional artwork for CW’s new show Ringer, the first network series from Sarah Michelle Gellar since she retired her stake as Buffy the Vampire Slayer eight years ago. Time just flies doesn’t it?

After a brief flirtation with what looked like it could blossom into a successful film career (2004′s horror The Grudge was her biggest hit), she quickly became typecast as the horror victim (yes… despite kicking vampire and monster ass for so many years!!) and the desperate attempts to re-capture The Grudge’s success mostly fell flat on their face. The last few years you would be mistaken for presuming she had all but retired from the industry.

But Buffy’s back with a duel role as two identical twin sisters in the murderous crime show from Supernatural writer-producers Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder premiering September 13th which carries...

Sofía Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sarah Hyland, Ed O'Neill, Eric Stonestreet, Beatrice the Dog, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Rico Rodriguez, Reid Ewing, Frances Anderson, and Jeremy Maguire in Modern Family (2009)
That which TVLine first told you about way back in February has come to fruition: Modern Family is pulling the trigger on a Lily recast, as Cam and Mitch’s bambino gets aged up a bit for Season 3. The casting call (cited by E! Online) seeks tykes to play “Asian, 3- to 4-year-old” Lily, but if you ask us, when dealing with a hit like Modern Family, there’s a primo opportunity here to widen the net and go big. For example….

The Only Way This Could Be Worse Is if Eliza Dushku Starred and It Aired on Lifetime: Buffy's Ringer Trailer
The one show I watch on the CW is "America's Next Top Model" and I would never admit that in public. Well, what I mean is, I only watch it to make fun of Tyra and the whole idea that anyone who wins her show will be a model anywhere near the top. Ever heard of any of them? Exactly. But, guilty pleasure that it is, there are always a bunch of crazy girls who think they're the shit, someone with a sob story about a broken home and another one crying about how her life will be nothing if she can't be a top model. There's a whole lot of "fierce" posing and arguing while "smizing," as J-1 and J-2 mock and berate the contestants (both behind their backs and to their faces.) Tyra wears bad clothes, strange hair and speaks in her best affected voice as she declares the girls worthy or not.

'The Dark Knight Rises' Adds 'Lost' And 'Transformers' Actors To Cast
The casting news for "The Dark Knight Rises" continues to develop this week, with two more actors joining the cast of the much-anticipated third — and final — installment of Christopher Nolan's gritty Batman franchise.

According to Variety, actors Brett Cullen (pictured) and Chris Ellis have been added to the cast of "The Dark Knight Rises." The report indicates that Cullen and Ellis will play a judge and a priest, respectively.

"Lost" fans will likely remember Cullen as Goodwin Stanhope, one of the mysterious Others that the survivors of Oceanic Flight 813 encounter early in the series. He also played Johnny Blaze's father, stunt rider Barton Blaze, in the 2007 film "Ghost Rider."

As for Ellis, he played Admiral Brigham in "Transformers" and has appeared in a long list of other genre film and television projects, including "Planet of the Apes" and "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," among others.

The pair join recently announced cast members Matthew Modine,...
