'Taken' Prequel TV Show Streaming for Free on Freevee
Image
Liam Neeson may have all the skills he needed to lead the Taken franchise to success across three movies that redefined his career, but many people are just discovering that this was just the beginning for the saga of Bryan Mills. The TV series prequel to the Taken franchise is currently streaming on Freevee and has debuted at the top of the streamer’s TV show chart.

The series, which was released in 2017 and stars Clive Standen in the lead role, tracks a younger Bryan Mills, showing how he became the man with the skills that everyone grew to love more than a decade earlier. A former Green Beret who experiences a personal tragedy, Mills' path is set when he becomes bent on revenge while moving into a deadly career as a CIA operative that will certainly come in useful years later.

The series received mixed reviews from critics and audiences.

Cobra Kai Star's Horror Movie Becomes Streaming Hit After Unnoticed Release in 2024
Image
A 2024 horror film starring Cobra Kai's Peyton List has found recent success on Hulu after its low-key debut earlier this year and rejection by most critics. The Inheritance currently has a 38% Rotten Tomato score.

Netflix announced in January 2023 that it would no longer distribute the horror movie as initially intended, opening the door for Vertical to acquire distribution rights for The Inheritance. Following a limited theatrical run, the film arrived without fanfare on video-on-demand (VOD) on July 12, 2024. The Inheritance, however, made a triumphant return to streaming, having been in and around Hulu's top 10 recently. The film peaked at no. 3 within the platform's top 15 movies earlier this week and has since managed to maintain its place in the top 15. The uptick in the interest the film is garnering from audiences on Hulu is not easily explained, given its 30% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is even worse than its critic score.

Image
As we enter the final stretch of 2024, Hulu is turning up the scare factor with a trio of must-see horror movies dropping on its platform this December. These films were all released in theaters this year. If you didn't get the chance to see any of them then, you will get to watch them from the comfort of your home very soon.

Cuckoo

Leading the pack is the Neon horror flick Cuckoo. Tilman Singer, who is best known for being behind the German supernatural horror film Luz, wrote the script and directed the movie. It stars Euphoria's Hunter Schafer as a teenage girl named Gretchen, who, after being forced to live with her father at a resort in the German Alps, starts experiencing bizarre occurrences and eerie visions. She soon realizes that the seemingly perfect resort hides dark secrets and that her life is in grave danger.

The Familiar Class Critique of ‘The Inheritance’ [Review]
Image
There’s a mystery at the heart of The Inheritance, the new thriller from director Alejandro Brugués. Or at least that what the screenplay by Joe Russo & Chris Lamont seems to believe.

When the film opens, the estranged adult children of billionaire Charles Abernathy (Bob Gunton) have assembled at the isolated family estate for the first time in two years. There’s severe, business-minded twins Madeline (Rachel Nichols) and C.J. (David Walton) who manage day-to-day operations for the family business, as well as influencer Kami (Peyton List), who hocks her fashion line to followers on social media.

It’s clear that the audience’s sympathies are meant to lie with youngest son Drew (Austin Stowell) and his wife Hannah (Briana Middleton). Not only do they work in philanthropy, but as the sole person of color, Hannah is immediately coded as the outsider, even before Madeline, C.J. and Charles...

Official Trailer for 'The Inheritance' Billionaire Thriller with Peyton List
Image
"I've ruined lives in the name of business, and now there's a price on my head." Vertical has released the official trailer for an indie horror thriller called The Inheritance, arriving to watch in July. Made by the same director as the horror spoof Juan of the Dead. This puts a terrifying new spin on "the kids want their inheritance even though the old man is getting grumpy" story that is pretty common these days. On the eve of his 75th birthday, billionaire Charles Abernathy invites his estranged children back home out of fear that tonight someone or something is going to kill him. He puts each of their inheritances on the line, to ensure they'll help keep him alive. If he's dead at dawn, they get nothing. Uh oh, sounds really scary. Starring Bob Gunton, Peyton List, Briana Middleton, Rachel Nichols, Austin Stowell, David Walton, Resse Alexander, and Chris Wood.

Netflix decides not to release completed genre films The Inheritance and House/Wife
Image
In a surprising move, Netflix has decided not to release the completed genre films The Inheritance (directed by Alejandro Brugués) and House/Wife (directed by Danis Goulet) as Netflix Originals. Thankfully, this isn’t a situation like Warner Bros. deciding to scrap Batgirl instead of going through with its release. The filmmakers behind these two projects will be able to try to find a new home for them… and the search is already underway. The Hollywood Reporter hasn’t been able to dig up any information on why Netflix decided not to release either of the two movies.

Scripted by Joe Russo and Chris Lamont and produced by Paul Schiff, The Inheritance stars Bob Gunton, Peyton List, Austin Stowell, Briana Middleton, David Walton, Reese Alexander, and Rachel Nichols. The story takes place on the eve of billionaire Charles Abernathy 75th birthday, when he invites his four estranged children back home out...

Riverdale’s Parents Are The Worst
It’s a Sunday night: you’ve just finished your job delivering leaflets for a local takeaway, you have algebra homework to do, you haven’t cleaned your room and your mum’s on the warpath. You’re sat in bed with ice cream watching serial killer documentaries and listening to The Smiths. Everything’s fine.

We’ve all been teenagers, and it isn’t easy. Puberty’s happening. You’re trying to do homework instead of going out with your friends every night. All your friends are making out with friends of friends. You have to think of clever tweets and take aesthetic selfies for Instagram. Your phone cannot be out of your line of sight for a second. It’s the apocalypse.

And your parents don’t understand, they’re just in your face all the time, trying to make you do chores or last week’s essay.

‘Dead Rising: Watchtower’ VOD Review
Stars: Jesse Metcalfe, Rob Riggle, Meghan Ory, Keegan Connor Tracy, Virginia Madsen, Aleks Paunovic, Dennis Haysbert, Gary Jones, Carrie Genzel, Reese Alexander, Harley Morenstein, Julia Benson, Peter Benson, Darren Dolynski, Patrick Sabongui | Written by Tim Carter | Directed by Zach Lipovsky

Rob Riggle as Frank West? That was all that I needed to know to be sold on seeing Dead Rising: Watchtower. Never mind the fact its based on one of the best zombie games of the last console generation – though we all know Left4Dead was The multiplayer zombie game – with a tongue in cheek story that played on the tropes of the genre, especially those found in the films of George A. Romero (after all, the first game was set in a mall!)

Dead Rising: Watchtower follows Chase Carter (Metcalfe), a reporter trying to make it big – but the pursuit of his career-defining story leads him into the heart of a zombie-infested warzone.

‘The Interview’ Blu-ray Review
Stars: James Franco, Seth Rogen, Randall Park, Lizzy Caplan, Diana Bang, Timothy Simons, Reese Alexander | Written by Dan Sterling | Directed by Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen

The Interview will be the answer to questions in pub quizzes for years to come. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s second directorial feature is headline news all over the world and many in Hollywood have claimed that its release is a victory for our right to free speech. It is also a film which features Seth Rogen having to hide a package from the CIA in his ass. The Interview is that increasingly rare film which manages to provoke discussions in mainstream pop-culture but little, if any, of that discussion is focused on the film itself but should it be forgotten amid the controversy surrounding it, this would be a shame as The Interview is one of the funniest films of the year with...

James Franco And Seth Rogen Bond With Kim Jong-Un In The Interview’s Raucous Final Trailer
Imagine you’re tasked with killing North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un by the CIA, only to fly to the rogue nation and discover that the Dear Leader is a friendly, Katy Perry-loving guy with a softness for adorable puppies. Who could kill a dude like that? Such is the improbable dilemma faced by James Franco’s airhead talk show host and his only slightly more level-headed producer (Seth Rogen) in The Interview.

Of course, all the mayhem is underscored by the same raunchy humor that has marked Franco and Rogen’s previous big-screen misadventures (including Pineapple Express and This is the End). The final trailer for The Interview, which you can check out above, looks to be a seriously funny treat for moviegoers this holiday season (and certainly a solid alternative to the glut of Oscar contenders arriving around the same time).

Stars: Danielle Harris, Katharine Isabelle, Glen Jacobs, Chelan Simmons, Kaj-Erik Eriksen, Greyston Holt, Lee Majdoub, Michael Eklund, Reese Alexander, Kelly-Ruth Mercier | Written by Nathan Brookes, Bobby Lee Darby | Directed by Jen Soska, Sylvia Soska

WWE Studios have some success and some failure with their releases but with See No Evil the reception was definitely mixed. One of their earliest movies it used Glen “Kane” Jacobs in the role of the psychotic killer Jacob Goodnight and I will admit to liking it, it had its flaws but it was fun a fun horror with plenty of gore. When the See No Evil 2 was announced it caught the attention of horror fans with the Soska Sisters were taking the reigns as directors and bringing scream queens Danielle Harris and Katharine Isabelle with them as part of the cast.

Following straight on from the first See No Evil, Jacob Goodnight is brought...

Exclusive: The Vicious Brothers Talk Grave Encounters 2
The Vicious Brothers Talk Grave Encounters 2, in select theaters starting October 12th, and available on VOD now

Grave Encounters was a found-footage horror phenomenon that many people believed was just a movie. Film student Alex Wright is out to prove them wrong in Grave Encounters 2. Alex is as obsessed with the first film, as the 20 million people who viewed its viral trailer on YouTube. Grave Encounters 2 comes to select theaters this weekend, so to celebrate, we caught up with the creators of the franchise, and the writers behind this new installment, The Vicious Brothers, to talk about the making of this movie.

Grave Encounters 2 (2012)
Directed by John Poliquin

Written by the Vicious Brothers

Featuring Reese Alexander, Stephanie Bennett, Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, Richard Harmon

Grave Encounters tried to take a fake show about fake ghost hunters and make it real. Grave Encounters 2 maddeningly tries to take a fake movie about fake scares and make it real.

Because it is. Real, that is. Also, it’s real. Have you heard it’s totally real?

In Grave Encounters, a fake television crew of a “Ghost Hunters”-type show meets some not-so-friendly ghosts and most of them meet their demise in a creepy hospital. It’s a great premise: a bunch of cynics believe they are going to walk through the motions and get their job done so they can go home but have to face their fears head-on if they hope to survive. The movie actually managed some tension; the characters had seen a number of these...

Grave Encounters was a hand-cam nightmare phenomenon that many people believed was just a movie. Film student Alex Wright, also obsessed with the first film, will find evidence against them in Grave Encounters 2.

While he and his friends research the events and visit the real psychiatric hospital depicted in the original film, they find themselves face-to-face with unspeakable evil, banking on the hope that their knowledge of the original film will help them survive the sequel.

Newcomer John Poliquin is directing this outing with Reese Alexander, Stephanie Bennett and Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman starring.
