  • Was among those actors to be offered the part of "Kane" (Edward Peel) in Docteur Who (1963): Dragonfire, but he was not free to accept the role.
  • Daughter Kate Alderton, with Pauline Collins.
  • He was awarded Top Actor Award in the Sun Awards in 1973.
  • Born on the same day as Bruce Lee.
  • Considered for Col. Colin Caine, Dr. Armstrong, Roger Derebridge and Kelly in Lifeforce - L'étoile du mal (1985).
  • John was educated at Kingston High School in Hull where he played cricket for the school team and regularly performed in the school plays.
  • Was offered the role of "James Herriot" in the BBC tv version of All Creatures Great and Small". He had already played the part in the 1976 feature film "It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet" the sequel to All Creatures Great and Small, in which Herriot was played by Simon Ward.
  • When he was at senior school he was a bit of a slacker but managed to get into 6th form and intended to be an architect but 2 weeks before he was due to take his A levels he walked out and went to London to join RADA. His father and his teachers thought he was mad but he knew he wouldn't make it to be an architect particularly when his best subjects were cricket and football,.
  • Kingston High School where he was educated at had a number of pupils who became famous including Amy Johnson who was the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia and actor Tom Courtney who became head boy.
