Village Roadshow TV to Develop Series Based on Lana Harper Novel ‘Payback’s a Witch’ (Exclusive)
Image
Village Roadshow Television has acquired the rights to Lana Harper’s novel “Payback’s a Witch” with the intention of developing it onto a TV series, Variety has learned exclusively.

The book is the first installment in Harper’s “Witches of Thistle Grove” novel series, with the planned show set to take that name as well.

Per the official logline, “Witches of Thistle Grove” is “a show about Emmy Harlow, a young woman with big dreams who abandoned her charming but podunk hometown to prove herself in the big city. When she’s suddenly called home nine years later to fulfill a family obligation — which, okay, happens to be arbitrating a centuries-old gauntlet — she’s forced to confront family rifts, broken friendships, and Gareth Blackmoore — a detestable but Hot Af ex who broke her heart and, it turns out, also screwed her friends: Her childhood bestie Linden Thorn, and the sexy,...

Jason Priestley on Why ‘BH90210’ Got Canceled, and Why He Would Act in ‘Euphoria’ If He Were a Young Star
Image
At the 61st Monte-Carlo Television Festival, Jason Priestley looked back at the success of ’90s teen soap “Beverly Hills, 90210,” and explained why the 2019 reboot “BH90210” got canceled by Fox after one season.

“BH90210” was described by Variety as a “soapy parody” that gave “the actors behind our favorite characters the space to play versions of themselves while poking fun at the public personas, rabid fans and roles that made them famous.” It saw original series cast members Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, Tori Spelling and Shannen Doherty playing heightened versions of themselves, rather than their original characters. But it was a high stakes gamble that ultimately didn’t pay off, said the North Vancouver native.

“We tried something with that show. It was a risky premise to build a show around. It was a real high-wire act to pull that show off, if we...

BH90210: Fox Boss Reveals Why Series Was Canceled After One Season
BH90210's cancellation divided TV Fanatic readers when it was announced a few months ago.

Some liked the meta aspect of it all, and others just wanted to check back in with the characters they fell in love with in the first place.

Despite strong buzz, Fox decided against bringing it back for a second season, and now the network is opening up about the controversial decision.

Fox Entertainment Chief Michael Thorn chatted with Deadline about the scenario, admitting that the meta revival was a "ballsy" direction for the creative forces to take the series.

However, he went on to say that it was "brave for the actors" to pull off such a high-concept series and complimented them on a "terrific job."

Thorn followed that up by stating that the idea for the series was to do it as an event. In TV terms, events are one-and-done but have the...

‘BH90210’: Fox’s Michael Thorn Explains Cancellation But Lauds “Ballsy” Revival – TCA
Fox entertainment chief Michael Thorn lauded the BH90210 quasi-revival as “ballsy” but explained why the network decided against bringing back the series for a second run.

The show, which featured the majority of the original cast, minus Luke Perry, was originally billed as a six-episode run and Thorn, who is president of entertainment at Fox told Deadline that the network wanted to “let it be”.

“I thought it was really brave for the actors. It was really ballsy,” he said. “To pull something off like that is such a high degree of difficulty and I think they did a terrific job but even six [episodes] was really challenging. The idea was to do it as a big event and it did really well for us, it did well in the ratings and was very satisfying for the fans and then let it be what it was, not turning it into something...

‘BH90210’ Canceled By Fox; No Second Installment Of ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Quasi-Revival
There will be no more BH90210 on Fox as the network has opted not to order another installment.

BH90210 , featuring most of the original cast of Beverly Hills, 90210, had been billed as a six-episode comedy event series. Yet, in success, the expectation was that it would go to multiple seasons.

“We are so proud to have reunited in a very special summer event one of the network’s legacy series and casts with 90210 fans across the country,” Fox said in a statement. “Profound thanks to and respect for Brian, Gabrielle, Ian, Jason, Jennie, Shannen and Tori, who, along with the entire crew and everyone at Fox and CBS Television Studios, poured their hearts and souls into this truly inventive and nostalgic revival.”

There was a lot of anticipation for BH90210, whose trailer amassed huge viewership in May. The premiere on Fox also drew strong ratings, but the numbers quickly...

‘BH90210’ Will Not Return for Second Season on Fox
The “Beverly Hills, 90210” reunion is officially over.

Fox has confirmed that its brief return to the 90210 via the six-episode summer event series “BH90210” is all fans are going to get.

“BH90210″ saw original series cast members Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, Tori Spelling and Shannen Doherty all back together again playing heightened versions of themselves, rather than their original characters. The series was the highest rated scripted broadcast show of the summer, averaging a 1.4 rating among adults 18-49 after three days of delayed viewing, and around 3.5 million total viewers per episode.

“We are so proud to have reunited in a very special summer event one of the network’s legacy series and casts with 90210 fans across the country,” said Fox in a statement. “Profound thanks to and respect for Brian, Gabrielle, Ian, Jason, Jennie, Shannen and Tori, who, along with the entire crew...

Beverly Hills: BH90210 (2019)
“Beverly Hills, 90210” meta-revival series “BH90210” will not return for another season, Fox announced on Thursday.

“We are so proud to have reunited in a very special summer event one of the network’s legacy series and casts with ‘90210’ fans across the country,” Fox said in a statement. “Profound thanks to and respect for Brian, Gabrielle, Ian, Jason, Jennie, Shannen and Tori, who, along with the entire crew and everyone at Fox and CBS Television Studios, poured their hearts and souls into this truly inventive and nostalgic revival.”

Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth on ‘BH90210’ Finale’s ‘Soapedy’ Cliffhanger, Their ‘Juicy’ Plans for a Season 2
Beverly Hills: BH90210 (2019)
(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the finale of “BH90210”)

Fox’s “BH90210,” ended Wednesday, revealing that the show’s “Beverly Hills, 90210” reboot got picked up to series — meaning that in-universe fans of Donna (Tori Spelling), David (Brian Austin Green), Kelly (Jennie Garth), Brenda (Shannen Doherty), Brandon (Jason Priestley), Steve (Ian Ziering) and Andrea (Gabrielle Carteris) will find out what the characters have been up to since the drama ended almost 20 years ago.

But in real life, fans of the meta-revival itself will have to wait to see if Fox orders a second season of “BH90210,” so they can find out what happens next with the “heightened” versions of Spelling, Green, Garth, Doherty, Priestley, Ziering and Carteris and their “90210” characters, who would live on via the reboot inside the show.

‘BH90210’ Stars On Potentially More Seasons & Luke Perry Tribute – TCA
Ahead of its premiere this evening, the BH90210 cast and executives were on hand during Fox’s presentation at the TCA summer press tour. On stage were executive producers Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler as well as stars and EPSs Gabrielle Carteris, Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Brian Austin Green, Tori Spelling, and Ian Ziering.

While the show — which premieres tonight on Fox — is being pegged as an event series, the possibility for future seasons has not been ruled out.

“We would love to continue to work together,” said Spelling. “It’s been such an amazing experience. I liken it to high school when you think oh you never get a chance to do a do-over and there are things that you know now that you didn’t know then that you would’ve done differently and we get that opportunity… We have so many stories to tell that this could...

Shannen Doherty ‘Definitely Wasn’t Going to Do’ the ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Revival – Until Luke Perry’s Death
Shannen Doherty at an event for La montagne ensorcelée (2009)
“Beverly Hills, 90210” alum Shannen Doherty “definitely” wasn’t on board for “BH90210,” Fox’s meta-revival of the series — and then Luke Perry, who played her on-screen love interest on the original show, died.

“So with me, it was, as these guys know, I definitely wasn’t going to do it,” Doherty told reporters while sitting next to her co-stars during the revival’s panel at Television Critics Association press tour Wednesday. “And nothing against the show, I knew that the show would, you know, get sold and do well with or without me. But they didn’t need me, so it just wasn’t at that moment what I wanted to be doing.”

The six-episode series, which premieres tonight, centers on the original cast — Doherty (who played Brenda Walsh), Gabrielle Carteris (Andrea Zuckerman), Jennie Garth (Kelly Taylor), Brian Austin Green (David Silver), Jason Priestley (Brandon Walsh), Ian Ziering (Steve Sanders...

‘BH90210’ Cast Re-Creates Original Opening Credits for New Fox Series (Video)
Fox released the opening credits sequence for its upcoming “BH90210” series on Tuesday, showing the cast dusting off their head turns 20 years later.

The clip is a more-or-less faithful re-creation of the original opening credits sequence from “Beverly Hills, 90210,” only this time with the added twist that all of the actors will be playing versions of themselves in the new series.

The six-episode series centers on the original cast — Gabrielle Carteris, Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Brian Austin Green, Jason Priestley and Tori Spelling — playing fictionalized versions of themselves “with a healthy dose of irreverence” as they try to get a revival of their old show off the ground.

Maybe it was only a matter of time.

Nostalgic content is having its moment, as programmers chase ratings and attempt to create conversations around their fare in new and relevant ways. Given the sheer number of reboots and revivals proliferating schedules, reinventing “Beverly Hills, 90210,” which was still averaging eight million viewers an episode when it went off the air following a 10-season run in 2000, seemed inevitable.

But how do you reinvent a series that ran for a decade and spawned a five-season reboot in 2008, while reuniting the original cast and telling a fresh and relevant story nearly 30 years following the original premiere?

“So much of what happens in the show is inspired by what was happening in the cast’s real lives,” says co-showrunner Mike Chessler. “They had all reconnected at a convention and some of them hadn’t seen each other for a long time. And the experience...

BH90210 Shake-Up: Revival Gets New Showrunner Amid Backstage Drama

Sciarrotta, whose credits include Jane the Virgin, The Fosters and 90210, has an overall deal with BH90210 producer CBS Television Studios. A spokesman said Sciarrotta, who already had been working on the series, “is bringing a strong focus and vision for the show.”

Sciarrotta already has brought in some scribes he worked with on the CW’s recently wrapped Jane the Virgin. One script and several outlines for BH90210 have been written.

Jason Priestley, Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling are reprising their Beverly Hills,...

Patrick Sean Smith, the showrunner on Fox’s upcoming “Beverly Hills, 90210” meta-revival, has exited the series, TheWrap has learned.

Paul Sciarrotta, whose previous credits include “Jane the Virgin” and The CW’s last “90210” reboot series, will take over as showrunner of “BH90210.” Series creators Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler will now also serve as co-showrunners . Sciarrotta, who has an overall deal with CBS Television Studios, was previously a member of the show’s writing staff.

A number of writers departed the show alongside Smith, though according to an individual familiar with the matter, the writers’ room has since been “beefed up” and is back on track in the wake of the departures.

Beverly Hills: BH90210 (2019)
There is drama behind the scenes of Fox’s upcoming “Beverly Hills 90210” revival that is worthy of — well, “Beverly Hills 90210.”

Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith and several senior writers have quit the six-episode series, which is titled “BH90210.” The exact reason for the exodus is unclear. One source said the dispute was over interference from two of the show’s lead actresses, while another noted that the writers were unhappy with one of the executives overseeing the project.

Paul Sciarrotta has been named the new showrunner along with series’ creators Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler. Sciarrotta, a member of the show’s writing staff, is currently under an overall deal with CBS Television Studios, which is producing the series.

“BH90210” is set to debut on Fox on Aug. 7. Original series cast members Jason Priestley, Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, and Tori Spelling will all return.

Shannen Doherty Joins Former Castmates for BH90210
There is good news for fans of Beverly Hills, 90210.

Original Beverly Hills, 90210 star Shannen Doherty is set to join her former co-stars – Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, and Tori Spelling – for BH90210, Fox’s highly anticipated new series airing this summer.

The news is also bittersweet, as her participation will highlight the glaring absence of their friend and castmate, Luke Perry.

It's also possible that tragic circumstances led to Doherty changing her mind about participation, as it's not difficult to imagine the group of friends found solace in each other during their time of grief.

Regardless, with the addition of Doherty, my interest has been piqued to the point BH90210 has become must-see television!

Original Flavor Beverly Hills, 90210 Revival Greenlit With a Slightly Bonkers Twist
Fox has officially ordered a revival of Beverly Hills, 90210. Most of the original class — Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, and Tori Spelling (Rip Scott) — are returning for an event series that will last six episodes and will air this summer (Looks like Brenda will be spending the summer alone in Paris while Dylan and Kelly hook up on the beach again). I jest, because this isn’t just a “Brandon has to move back into his parent’s old house with Brenda and Steve to reenact his entire childhood because he is a broke widow” kind of revival. Variety reports that things are going to get weird and wonderful:

The actors will not be playing their characters from the show, but rather heightened versions of themselves. Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, Jason, Jennie, Ian, Gabrielle, Brian and...

‘Beverly Hills, 90210’: Fox Boss “Would Love” New Series To Be On the Network
Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier played it coy but could not hide his enthusiasm at the prospect of having a new Beverly Hills’ 90210 series on the network.

A deal is expected soon.

‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Closes In On A Deal As Tori Spelling Reveals Details About Cast Reunion Series

Tori Spelling at an event for Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2009 (2009)
Tori Spelling confirmed Friday what has been talked about for months: a “Beverly Hills, 90210” reboot is coming with most of the original cast.

“It’s confirmed. We’re doing a new 90210,” the actress said on “Access Live,” which you can watch above. “It is the Og crew back together.”

She explained that the reboot will shift between the scripted show and behind-the-scenes versions of the actors. “We’re playing heightened versions of ourselves,” she continued. “The fans will be pleasantly surprised, though, because we will intercut that with scenes from the show. It will be the whole ensemble cast playing a heightened version of themselves. Almost everybody.”

A reboot of the teen drama was first reported by TheWrap in December. Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling, Jason Priestley, Ian Ziering, Brian Austin Green and Gabrielle Carteris are presently attached.

It Looks Like That Beverly Hills, 90210 Reboot Isn't a Reboot After All
Jennie Garth
It looks like our early Christmas present might not be exactly what we were expecting. On Dec. 20, news dropped that a "reboot" of the iconic Beverly Hills, 90210 was being pitched around to various networks. The project, which is reportedly in early development, was described as an "untraditional reboot," in the sense that the actors "are not reprising their original characters." Initially we wondered how the reboot would work with characters not being played by their original actors - but now we have an answer to all of that! According to TVLine, while the new series does feature some of the original cast, it isn't a reboot or a revival at all.

Before you decide you're not interested in anything but the return of the Peach Pit Posse, hear us out. TVLine reports that the scripted series is actually an "hour-long mockumentary-style dramedy" that's inspired by the '90s teen drama.
