Sondelli was the second editor on The Utopian Society (2003) and had met Akerman when she went to loop a line of dialog at the then-editor's house. Akerman was eventually absorbed into the the band, which changed its name to "The Petal Stones", where she met and eventually married fellow band member and drummer Roberto Zincone.

(December 1, 2018) Married her boyfriend of nearly 2 years Jack Donnelly in a beach ceremony in Tulum, Mexico, in front of their family and friends. The couple was first spotted sharing a smooch last March in Puerto Rico while on vacation. Last October, Akerman announced their engagement on Instagram. Earlier this year, she made an appearance on Joshua Jackson/Malin Akerman (2018) and revealed she and Donnelly had known each other for several years before they began dating.

Her father is Magnus Åkerman and her step-mother is Vera Stevens. They both appeared on the Swedish reality-show "Skånefruar" (2010).
