W.Z. Ahmed or W.Z.Ahmed , the shorter name he himself preferred to use on screen for his movie credits, received his basic early education from Government College, Lahore, Pakistan. Then, when the Silent Era in movies ended in 1931, he was very much interested in writing scripts for films. So he went to Bombay, India to try his luck there. He had a film studio built in Puna, India and started making his own films under the banner- Shalimar Pictures. He had made 6 films in India before he migrated to the newly independent Pakistan in 1947. In Lahore, Pakistan, he played a key role in helping develop the new film industry. He is considered one of the pioneer film producer/ directors of Pakistan. He made film Roohi (1954) and then film Waada (1957). Waada (1957) was a super-hit Golden Jubilee film with superb music and film songs by music director Rashid Attre. He had only one son named Fareed Ahmed who also went to the USA to get some training in film-making. Fareed Ahmed returned from the USA and made many movies in Pakistan while W.Z.Ahmed retired from the film world and then died in 2007 in Lahore, Pakistan at the age of 91.
