This 'Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life' Storyline Does a Disservice to One of the Original Series' Best Relationships
Image
Even after so many years, Gilmore Girlsmaintains a significant following, and it's easy to see why. Full of charm, unique characters, and humor, there's a lot to enjoy about the series. The story follows Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and her daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel), showing off their idealized relationship where they are friends as well as mother and daughter. However, Gilmore Girls highlights different dynamics between parents and children. Besides Lorelai and Rory's "best friends" arrangement, there is Lorelai and Emily's (Kelly Bishop) challenging interactions, Mrs. Kim's (Emily Kuroda) overly strict rules for Lane (Keiko Agena), and even Luke (Scott Patterson) and April's (Vanessa Marano) attempt to connect after being kept apart. Yet one of the most intriguing and often under-explored is Lorelai's relationship with her father, Richard (Edward Herrmann).

The Best 'Gilmore Girls' 'Ship Isn’t the Duo You Expect
Image
Gilmore Girls has many fun best-friend characters, from Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Sookie (Melissa McCarthy) to Rory (Alexis Bledel) and Lane (Keiko Agena). In many ways, Lorelai and Rory even fit this dynamic, though as mother and daughter, their unique relationship certainly qualifies as something more. However, among all the friendships explored in the series, the relationship between Rory and Paris (Liza Weil) will always be top-tier. Rory doesn't refer to Paris as her best friend (though Paris says it about Rory), yet over the show's seven seasons, they come to rely on each other.

10 Classic Teen TV Dramas That Don't Hold Up Today
Image
Teen dramas have been popular with viewers, old and young, for many years, and the 1990s and early 2000s were the heyday of the genre. With networks dedicated to telling these stories, actors were thrust into the spotlight at a very young age. These new stars were given a variety of topics to cover in their respective shows, from teen romance shows to supernatural teen dramas, and some of them aged better than others. Of course, when watching a show from 20 or 30 years ago, it stands to reason that the storytelling won't be the same. Still, it's important to have conversations about how some of the most beloved TV characters handled things.

While it's important to be able to express oneself creatively, some level of self-awareness and respect is imperative. A lot of teen shows wanted to be edgy, subversive, and took on topics like teen LGBTQ+ representation, sexual assault,...

10 TV Characters That I’m Angry Never Got Their Happy Ending
Image
This article contains discussions of HIV/AIDS, queerbaiting, substance use disorder, and predatory teachers.

Though many character exits on TV have disappointed me, some are so unfair, mean-spirited, or poorly written that they bring out my righteous indignation. Because all shows end, every character will eventually leave the audience. Like many people, I become emotionally invested in my favorite TV characters, wanting them to thrive and be happy. When done right, endings feel earned and fit the established characterizations and storylines.

Unfortunately, writers sometimes rob great characters of happy endings, leaving them in terrible situations they don’t deserve. If a character’s unhappy ending is written to reflect the bitterness of reality, the drastic and unpopular choices are more forgivable because of their deeper purpose within the narrative. However, often, the betrayal of an unhappy ending is sometimes too much to bear, and I can’t help but feel angry.

10 TV Characters Who Deserved Better Than Their Shows Gave Them
Image
One of the signs of a successful show is the characters in it, and their ability to win the hearts of viewers. It is often these beloved fan favorites that keep audiences tuned in season after season, anxiously waiting to see what lies ahead for the characters. More often than not, characters are rewarded by the end of their stories: vanquishing evil, finding love, landing their dream job and more.

However, there are some who do not get a fairy tale ending or storyline, ruining the once beloved characters. For example, fans of Gilmore Girls were horrified to see Lane Kim (Keiko Agena) conform to the traditional lifestyle she had questioned throughout the show, as well as the shocking heel turn of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) after her long and rough journey to the Iron Throne. Despite their popularity among fans, several prized characters have fallen victim to their fates in the writer's room.

Image
The fate of some of the most popular TV show couples is a source of intense discussion and controversy among fans, but there are some couples that are too good together to be denied. However, just because two characters have great chemistry and it makes sense for them to be endgame, this doesn't mean the writers and showrunners will allow this. It's always tragic when a couple that seemed perfect breaks up and then never gets back together, even though they were one of the best pairings in the entire TV series.

When it comes to the worst TV couples that shouldn't have happened, their breakups can't come soon enough. This couldn't be further from the case with these iconic relationships that might have been endgame. Often, the breakup of two characters who could easily have been meant to be is a healthy and mature parting of ways where they...

Image

For seasonal re-watchers, there are certainly some more festive episodes that break up the tension. From Rory's college move-in day at Yale University to an unconventional Thanksgiving, Gilmore Girls remains a classic for its many heartwarming moments that bring the show's characters together. While Gilmore Girls has several plot lines that are now viewed differently under the microscope of contemporary criticism,...

Gilmore Girls' Adam Brody Responds To Whether Dave Rygalski Deserves The Best Boyfriend Title
Image
Gilmore Girls alum Adam Brody candidly responds to whether his character, Dave Rygalski, deserves the title of best boyfriend. Brody is currently going viral and stealing hearts opposite Kristen Bell in the Netflix romantic comedy series Nobody Wants This as Rabbi Noah Roklov. It's a role that echoes the actor's most famous performance as The O.C.'s Seth Cohen. But going even further back, it's drawn comparisons to the relatively minor Gilmore Girls character of Dave Rygalski and his brief relationship with Keiko Agena's Lane Kim.

In an "Ask Me Anything" video for Elle, Brody and Bell took turns addressing different topics, and Brody fielded a question from his Nobody Wants This co-lead about whether Dave deserves the best boyfriend title on Gilmore Girls. Despite the sterling reputation that Dave has, Brody says that the character wasn't part of the series long enough to earn the best boyfriend title.

10 TV Romances That Ended Too Soon
Image
In movies, there are often genre-driven stories that don't need and don't have any romance, while even television series that are not about love frequently use the narrative device of introducing love interests. Whether it's a romantic show or not, writers create couples as part of an overarching storyline that sometimes demands the characters break up. But, for the audience invested in the development of the relationship, it's disappointing to feel like a TV couple's narrative potential was wasted. At the same time, some viewers also feel like certain TV romances end too soon simply because the couple is doing great when a tragedy sets them apart.

The doomed romance between Rory and Jess in Gilmore Girls, for example, is famously one of the main topics of discussion among fans of the show. With the series often revolving around the question of who Rory and Lorelai are going to end up with,...

10 Best TV Shows To Turn Your Brain Off To
Image
TV shows with complex and thought-provoking storylines are often held up as the best of the medium, but there's something special about series that enable viewers to turn their brains off while they're watching them. Prestige television like Breaking Bad and Succession requires audiences to pay attention to every little detail, as even the smallest one can come back later in the story and it won't necessarily be spelled out for viewers. And it's no secret that fantasy and sci-fi series demand effort from the people watching them; there's no other way they'd remember all the world-building elements.

It's great to experience TV shows that force viewers to put work in, but simpler series are just as important to the television landscape. When audiences want to unwind in front of their televisions, it's these shows they'll turn to. Most of them still tackle important or serious subjects, but they do...

Image
Some of the best crime TV shows were canceled early, leaving fans frustrated with the lack of character and story development. Titles like Prodigal Son, The Enemy Within, Limitless, Jett, and Magic City had potential but fell short due to network issues or audience ratings. Critically acclaimed performances, dynamic relationships, and compelling storylines were cut short, leaving viewers disappointed with the abrupt endings.

Unfortunately, multiple crime TV shows were canceled far too soon. Some of the best TV shows of all time were included in the crime genre and were remembered for engaging viewers in stories about the dark underbelly of the criminal world, the law enforcement officers who strove to bring them to justice, and the loved ones who were dragged into the chaos. The best crime procedural TV shows typically ran for several seasons, but some titles werent lucky enough to achieve the same stretch. Despite being cut short,...

‘Gilmore Girls’ Star Keiko Agena on Letting Go of the “Pressure” of Playing Beloved Character Lane Kim

Keiko Agena is opening up about the mixed feelings she has when thinking back to playing Lane Kim on the popular TV series Gilmore Girls.

The actress, who played Rory Gilmore’s (Alexis Bledel) music-loving best friend for all seven seasons from 2000-07, recalled her experience on the Dear Felicity rewatch podcast, admitting that she has a different perspective of her character compared to what fans may have.

“For me, it’s this separate thing a little bit because I think what [the role] was for people was different than what it was for me,” she explained. “And so, in a weird way, I feel like I want to honor the experience that people had from the show, and what it meant to them, especially young Asian people, because I get that comment a lot, about what it was like for them to see someone like that onscreen.”

15 TV Shows That Disrespected Their Main Characters Too Many Times
Image
TV shows have disrespected characters through poor writing, such as inconsistent characterization and unrealistic storylines. Even the best shows have seen popular characters decline in relatability and appeal due to disrespectful treatment. Retcons in TV are detrimental to characters, as seen in instances where past events were altered, leading to confusing and disappointing character arcs.

Although TV shows have always been relatively supportive of their main characters, some disrespected them far too often. TV show characters have frequently been scorned by their writers in several ways, such as giving them poor or inconsistent characterization, storylines that made little sense, or ruining their arcs with retcons or backstory alterations. Retcons in TV have notably caused the downfall of characters, mainly because their past and present became so complex that it was hard to remember what was canonical or not.

Even the best TV shows of all time have been guilty of...

10 Gilmore Girls Moments That Made Viewers Quit The Show
Image
The characters in "Gilmore Girls" have troubled relationships, character flaws, and disappointing moments for fans. Lorelai & Rory lack communication skills, causing trouble in their romantic relationships. Many storylines don't do justice to character's personalities, like Lane & Paris, betraying their initial character arcs.

Part of the fun of watching Gilmore Girls is the drama, but sometimes the TV show included unbelievable moments that made fans stop watching. Most often this came from the two main characters, Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and her daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel), who were pros at self-sabotage and getting in their own way. However, they're hardly the only characters prone to making bad choices, as the creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, wanted the show's greatest conflicts to be grounded and relatable. Romantic entanglements and lack of communication were often the root of the shows issues.

The reason certain storylines are met with vitriol is that fans are so dedicated to...
