Cartoon Network Going Corporate? Animators and Fans Are Worried
Image
Following Tuesday’s news of layoffs and restructurings within Warner Bros. Television Group, many animation fans and creators have taken to social media to express worry about the state of Cartoon Network Studios within the company — which sources from Warner Bros. maintain is unfounded.

The layoffs, announced on Tuesday, heavily affected the animation division of the company. As laid out in a memo sent by Television Group chief Channing Dungey, the three studios the animation division consists of — Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe — will remain intact. While Hanna-Barbera will operate independently due to geographical distance, Cartoon Network Studios and Warner Bros. Animation will merge their development and production teams. Announced on Thursday, Cartoon Network execs Tricia Melton and Jill King are the latest to go as part of the merger.

Audrey Diehl will oversee the combined kids and family series, Peter Girardi will lead the combined adult animation development,...

Sam Register Upped to Head of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios, Rob Sorcher to Shift to Production Deal
Image
Head of Warner Bros. Animation Sam Register is adding Cartoon Network’s productions to his purview with an elevation to president of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios. Meanwhile, Cartoon Network Studios head Rob Sorcher will transition to an overall production deal with Warner Bros. Television Group.

Register will now oversee both animation studios, which will continue to function as separate entities but will be “united by a commitment to creative excellence, new voices, and a culture of inclusion and collaboration,” according to the company. Register, who began his animation career with Cartoon Network in 1994, developed and produced animated series such as “Chowder,” “Flapjack,” “Clone Wars,” and “Ben 10.”

“By aligning two of the industry’s most powerful animation studios, we will unleash incredible opportunities for artists to flourish and an unprecedented amount of animation for fans to devour,” said Register. “Together we have a shared opportunity to create...

Tom Ascheim, President of Warner Bros’ recently formed Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics division, is realigning its executive ranks at Warner Bros Animation and Cartoon Network Studios.

Warner Bros Animation President Sam Register is expanding his responsibilities, adding oversight of Cartoon Network Studios to his purview, reporting to Ascheim. With Register’s promotion, Cartoon Network’s chief content officer Rob Sorcher, who served as head of Cartoon Network Studios, will segue into an overall production deal with Warner Bros Television Group, where he’ll create both animated and live-action properties.

Taking over Sorcher’s Cartoon Network programming oversight responsibilities on an interim basis is former Nickelodeon and Universal Kids executive Amy Friedman, who has been brought in as a senior advisor. Reporting to Ascheim, Friedman will provide creative, strategic and inclusive programming guidance for the Cartoon Network brand.
