10 best ‘Hacks’ episodes so far, ranked
Image
Through four seasons, Hacks has become of one of the defining — and one of the funniest — shows of the decade. Created by Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky, the Max comedy following stand-up legend Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her complicated relationship with a young comedy writer, Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), has delivered some certified bangers that are hilarious, heartwarming, incisive, and absolutely shocking, sometimes all at once. Just as shocking? Its win for Best Comedy Series in 2024 over The Bear, a surprising but wholly deserved victory for its better-than-ever third season. Not as surprising? Smart winning her third Best Comedy Actress Emmy, remaining undefeated for the show.

Hacks, which also stars Downs, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Megan Stalter, Rose Abdoo, and Mark Indelicato, just concluded its fourth season with an ending that sets the show on a new course once again.

As it preps for its fifth season, which...

Comedy TV Writers on the Importance of Filming in Los Angeles, Sharing Soundstages and the Power of the Will They/Won’t They Relationship

For “Nobody Wants This” creator/executive producer Erin Foster, when it came time to figure out where to shoot her Netflix comedy “Nobody Wants This,” she had some leverage in her back pocket: Star Kristen Bell.

“Shooting in L.A. is hard and really expensive,” Foster told the audience on Thursday at Variety’s A Night in the Writers Room event. “We were only able to shoot in L.A. because Kristen Bell has kids here that are in school here. And she’s like, ‘I won’t shoot anywhere else.’”

Foster said Netflix and 20th TV, which is behind “Nobody Wants This,” quickly agreed. “They’re like, ‘well, then we’re shooting where you want to shoot,’” she told the A Night in the Writers’ Room audience. “We got very lucky that she wants to be home with her kids. She wants to come to work, she wants to live in LA.

Hacks season 5 might not be the final season despite five-season plan
Image
HBO Max picked up a fifth season of the Emmy-winning Hacks, one day before the season 4 finale. But could this be the last we see of Deborah and Ava? Well, the showrunners have been tight-lipped about the future of the acclaimed comedy, but the writers have previously insisted that the comedy would end after five seasons.

Recently, Jen Statsky, Lucia Aniello, and Paul W. Downs addressed the future of the hit comedy during a Variety round table. Downs revealed the writers were currently working on the fifth season and waiting to see how many more episodes they needed to tell their story.

“The final scene of the final episode has been in our minds since 2015, and we’re excited to get there. But that may take more episodes than we can fit in the season. So the truth is that we don’t know,” Downs admitted.

‘Hacks’ Renewed for Fifth Season at Max
Image
Hacks is entering the record books at Max.

The streamer has renewed the series for a fifth season, which will make Hacks the longest-running live-action show in Max’s (admittedly not very long) history. Series creators and showrunnners Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky announced the renewal Tuesday evening at an Emmy FYC screening in Los Angeles.

The pickup for the Emmy-winning comedy from Universal Television comes two days before its fourth season finale. The current season has seen Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) realize her dream of hosting a late-night talk show — though with more strings attached than she would like — with Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) as her head writer.

Hacks premiered in May 2021, when the streaming service where it runs was known as HBO Max. It has continued since the platform changed its name to Max in April 2023 — and with the renewal, season five will stream on...

The comedy’s creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky learned of the renewal news last week.

“We’re thrilled to be able to make a fifth season of a comedy,” Downs told TheWrap in an interview that also included Aniello and Statsky. “It is a very rare thing now, which we wish weren’t the case. But we don’t take for granted how fortunate we are to get to do it. We were really excited because we’ve always known where we want the story to conclude, and so to be able to continue to build towards that is so satisfying.”

It’s no surprise that Max renewed “Hacks.” So far, the comedy has been nominated for 48 Primetime Emmys. The series...

Fans Are Turning on ‘Hacks’ as Season 4 Earns Alarmingly Low Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score
Image
The first two episodes of Hacks Season 4 debuted on Max at the start of last month, and while general audiences were much higher on the series at the start, opinions have begun to shift. With six episodes under its belt and only four more remaining in Season 4, Hacks has dropped to a series-low 63% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. This falls well below the 89% score earned in Season 1 and the 90% scores from Seasons 2 and 3. However, while critical opinion on the show has waned slightly, it’s nowhere near the drop-off that general audiences have seen. Hacks Season 4 still has a 97% rating from critics on the aggregate site, just a touch below the 100% earned in the first two seasons and the 98% from Season 3.

Hacks has aired 33 episodes now, halfway through its fourth season, and only three stars have managed to earn a spot in every single entry. Leading the charge are Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder,...

Hacks season 4 finally brings back the guest star we've been waiting for
Image
Week after week, Hacks season 4 continues to deliver everything we want. Whether it's Deborah and Ava hilariously feuding or having hard-fought moments seeing eye-to-eye, the fourth season of the Emmy Award-winning comedy has been a dream. The cameos and guest star appearances have been amazing, too, and the most recent episode finally brought back a favorite character.

In the halfway point of season 4, Hacks called in an iconic but unexpected cameo appearance from Nobody Wants This star Kristen Bell. Deborah Vance is a Veronica Mars fan. Who knew? The same episode also welcomed Paradise star Julianne Nicholson as Dance Mom, a viral social media personality who dances with Deborah to "Lifetimes" by Katy Perry.

With all of that momentum, Hacks season 4 went into the back half of the season with the long anticipated return of Kaitlin Olson as Deborah's daughter DJ. I don't know about you, but I have been...

‘Hacks’ Review: Season 4 Wears Its Crown Well, but Gets a Bit Lost at the Top
Image
There’s an episode late in “Hacks” Season 4 where Kaitlin Olson swoops in and steals the show. Now, to anyone familiar with her game — that is, anyone familiar with “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and/or “High Potential” and/or the previous three seasons of “Hacks” — this should come as no surprise. Olson is an expert comic performer, able to snag an audible laugh simply by adjusting the pitch of her reverberant voice, but she’s also impressively present. She gives her fellow actors the space to cook, before reacting in kind with a special sauce of her own.

Like the best character actors out there, she knows how to make sure her flavor goes well with everything. As DJ, Olson has to be the oblivious buffoon, an incisive straight-shooter, and a guarded, slightly dented daughter. She’s always wary of her mother, Deborah (Jean Smart), whose good intentions haven...

“We’re Building Up the World”: ‘Hacks’ Showrunners Have an Enthusiastic Response To Demand for a Kayla and Jimmy Spin-Off
Image
Hacksis about to return to television, but the world of Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) might expand beyond what fans have already seen so far. During a recent interview, the showrunners behind the successful comedy series toyed around with the idea of producing a spin-off focused on two of the most popular supporting characters from the production. Kayla (Megan Stalter) and Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) have been working very hard for every one of their clients to become a success. Here's what the actor behind Jimmy (and one of the showrunners behind Hacks) had to say about a spin-off focused on the two entertainment representatives:

"We shot in this cement building here in L.A. and then we reconstructed it on a stage, so we do have a standing set (for the spin-off)."

Hacks co-showrunner Lucia Aniello entered the conversation with another character that could appear in the potential project: "We’re ready,...

‘Hacks’ Season 4 Review: Max Series Tackles Late Night in Hilariously Vicious Return
Image
“Well aren’t you a big, brave girl?”

When last we left our fateful antiheroes Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), Ava had just confronted her nemesis/boss about her role as head writer on Deborah’s upcoming late night show. A role that was promised to her after years of torment, unruly comedy tours, harmful attacks and damn good jokes. Ava saw an opportunity to grab life by the balls and hoist herself up the corporate ladder.

Deborah has dreamt of hosting the coveted 11:30 p.m. late night timeslot since her early stand-up days, but she never imagined that Ava would have dreams of her own. Blackmail aside, their toxic relationship has seen better days, just as the two see their individual careers linked together in a warped juxtaposition of success and frustration. The push-and-pull of their characters’ chemistry keeps “Hacks” interesting and a fun-filled ride to watch.

Amy Sherman-Palladino Is Still "Angry" About 'Bunheads' Cancellation [Exclusive]
Image
We all have one show that, if given the chance, we'd ask for it not to be cancelled. For longtime fans of Gilmore Girls and Amy Sherman-Palladino, that show tends to be Bunheads. The show ran for a singular season from 2012-2013 when everyone was still reeling from the conclusion of Gilmore Girls five years prior. While many fans knew that it would be unlikely to have the same spirit as Gilmore Girls, with star Lauren Graham on Parenthood and her being such a huge part of Gilmore Girls' success, fans were hungry for Asp's next project. She'd left Gilmore Girls at the end of Season 6, resulting in a mixed bag of fan feelings for Season 7.

Sherman-Palladino is once again trying her hand at the world of ballet with her upcoming show, Étoile, which looks to have a much different tone than the dramedy-esque tone of Bunheads, but it...

Hannah Einbinder Channeled “All the Great Mob Bosses” in ‘Hacks’ Season 4: “I Was Trying to Go Ava Corleone”
Image
“I wasn’t surprised. We deserved it,” declared Jean Smart of Hacks‘ unexpected — to most — win for best comedy series at last year’s Emmys as the show’s cast and creatives gathered at PaleyFest LA on Friday.

Smart, Hannah Einbinder, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Mark Indelicato, Megan Stalter and Rose Abdoo joined co-creators Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre to unveil the hit show’s upcoming fourth season, while also reflecting on that big Emmy moment for season three.

The series picks up almost immediately where it left off, with Deborah Vance (Smart) landing the late-night show of her dreams and comedy writer Ava (Einbinder) having just blackmailed her for the head writer job, after Vance previously promised the role and took it away.

“You leave season three on such a tense moment that it felt like to skip ahead any more than that,...

Jean Smart knew ‘Hacks’ would win the Emmy Award: ‘I wasn’t surprised — we deserved it’
Image
"I wasn't surprised — we deserved it."

That's how Jean Smart described her reaction to Hacks winning Best Comedy Series at last year's Emmy Awards. She recounted her feelings Friday night at PaleyFest while surrounded by fellow cast members Hannah Einbinder, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Rose Abdoo, Mark Indelicato, and Megan Stalter, plus showrunners-writers-directors-producers Jen Statsky, Lucia Aniello, and Paul W. Downs (who also stars). Variety's Michael Schneider moderated the Q&a panel, which took place after the world premiere screening of the first two episodes of Season 4.

Downs recalled being "shocked" when Hacks won the major trophy, and Aniello agreed, saying, "Very few times in your life a shocking thing can happen and it's good. So, at a very base human level, it was really cool to have that experience in your body."

Einbinder said it was "basically crazy" that the show won the Emmy, noting, "We were all sort of in a state of shock,...

‘Hacks’ Season 4 Drops Blackmail-Filled Trailer Ahead of April Premiere
Image
“Hacks” Season 4 is picking up right where Season 3 left off: with Deborah and Ava on the edge of war. The latest installment of the Emmy-winning Max original comedy will premiere with its first two episodes on April 10.

“Well aren’t you a big, brave girl,” Deborah (Jean Smart) menacingly says in the new trailer out Tuesday, rounding on her prodigy.

“I guess I am,” Ava (Hannah Einbinder) replies. “It’s for the best.”

The clip then cuts between several high-energy scenes, from Deborah dancing in a club to both Deborah and Ava driving literal race cars. Kaitlin Olson’s very pregnant DJ can even be seen briefly weightlifting.

“Blackmail on day one? Not good!” Deborah and Ava’s manager Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) yells. “She’s been doing this for 50 years. You’re not going to beat her at her own game. Nobody beats Deborah.” Maybe, not yet.

If you need a refresher,...

‘Hacks’ Teaser For Season 4 Shows Deborah & Ava At Each Other’s Throats
Image
Oh, it’s on between Deborah and Ava.

In the trailer for season 4 of Hacks, which returns April 10 to Max, Jean Smart’s alter-ego mutters sarcastically “well, aren’t you a big brave girl” now that her former writer (Hannah Einbinder) is now running Deborah’s new late-night talk show.

But the days of hugs and kisses are gone; the two are at each other’s throats, with Deborah watching Ava hit the ground in a failed trust fall, and the two going mano e mano in race cars.

The 10-episode season of the Emmy-winning comedy debuts with two episodes, then one episode a week for four weeks. Episodes seven and eight debut together on May 15, followed by episode nine on May 22. The season finale debuts on May 29.

For the new season, Hacks has lured Hacks Julianne Nicholson, Michaela Watkins, Bresha Webb, Robby Hoffman, and Eric Balfour for guest starring roles.

Julianne Nicholson, Michaela Watkins and Eric Balfour Among ‘Hacks’ Season 4 Guest Stars
Image
Hacks is beefing up the ranks before its imminent return. The Emmy-winning Max comedy announced Tuesday the addition of 13 new guest stars planned for the fourth season — including those populating the writers room on Deborah Vance’s (Jean Smart) new late-night talk show.

Toplining the new faces are Julianne Nicholson, Michaela Watkins, Bresha Webb, Robby Hoffman and Eric Balfour, while Danny Jolles, Gavin Matts, Grover Whitmore, III, Holmes, Jasmine Ashanti, Katy Sullivan, Matt Oberg and Sandy Honig will guest as the Deborah’s new writers — all of whom will presumably report to Hannah Einbinder’s Ava.

In the season three finale, Ava blackmailed Deborah into giving her the head writer gig on her new show. The season four logline doesn’t give much, saying only “tensions rise as Deborah and Ava endeavor to get their late night show off the ground and make history doing it.” Tensions indeed…
