Born to Thomas Abeel and Linda Gilkerson, Nick Abeel grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. His parents and sister still live there. His sister works as a social worker and his parents own and operate a commercial kitchen.

Nick got his start at the age of 10 at the Indiana Repertory Theatre playing Dill in To Kill a Mockingbird. He performed extensively in Indianapolis in his youth doing theatre, film, and commercials. For a while, he was the spokesman for the Rose Hulman's Homework Hotline and he is still in the film they show to children before going through a surgery at Riley's Children's Hospital. He attended Broad Ripple High School and then the University of Evansville to study theatre.

After graduating, Nick moved to New York City. Since moving, he has helped develop new work with some of the top theaters in New York, performed regionally at the Denver Center and Kennedy Center, shot many student films, and learned to play the piano to boot.
