Subhash K Jha curates a special list of 8 brilliant films to watch for this festive weekend.
Silvat (2018):
Playing a Muslim darzi in Tanuja Chandra 40-minute film situated in the crowded gully of what looks like Mumbai’s Haji Ali locality, Kartik is every bit Anwar, the shy sensitive tailor who develops a secret passion for his favourite client: a lonely abandoned wife Noor (Meher Mistry) whose husband has migrated to Riyadh for a job with nary a glance back for the woman he has left behind. The focus of the passionate plot, pulsating with unspoken ardour, is Noor. But it’s Kartik’s Anwar who silently steals the show. There is no exhibition of outward passion here. And yet so much is said through Anwar’s eyes. Every stolen glance is laden with longing. The film is shot on location in a Muslim locality with streetside vendors frying parathas and malpuas,...

There is an immediate and ineradicable relatability between Karan Johar and the people he befriends. I count myself among his close friends.
I vividly remember the first time I spoke to him. It took time. I had loved Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and keenly wanted to speak to him. I asked a dear friend, a sophisticated actress and also a chat-show hostess if she would introduce us. “Darling, I can’t disturb him just like that. I will see when I can mention him to you,” she assured me. I believed her blindly. She was, after all, my dear friend.
Months and years passed. Then Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham came. I still hadn’t spoken to Karan Johar. One day, a kindhearted publicist called and asked if I’d like to talk to Karan Johar.
I said, sure, why not? (pretending to be nonchalant).
That’s when we spoke for the first time.

Why Did Rekha Never Work With Amitabh Bachchan After Silsila? (Photo Credit – YouTube)
Bollywood legends Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha’s rumoured relationship has always been a topic of discussion in the industry. Their alleged romance began on the sets of Do Anjaane. Bachchan was already married to Jaya Bhaduri at the time, and Rekha got the title of ‘other woman.’ They last worked together in Silsila, and the audience loved their on-screen chemistry.
Rekha Said Not Working With Amitabh Bachchan After Silsila Was Her Own Loss
In an interview with Filmfare, Rekha reflected on her decision not to work with Big B and called it her ‘own loss.’ “My loss is that I didn’t get a chance to share the phenomenal growth of Amitji as an actor. The only rational answer that I can think of is that the wait to be able to co-star with Amitji is worth it.

Does Aditya Chopra actually exist? He does, friends. He does. I have actually met him, albeit briefly and when he was told I was a journalist he fled , literally ran away.
Such are the dream encounters that make life worth living.
If the truth be told, I was far closer to Aditya’s father, the great Yash Chopra who was rightly very proud of his elder son. Yashji loved people. He loved meeting them. Whenever he came to know I am in Mumbai he cleared his appointments and made space for me.
During one of our meeting dear Yashji spoke about his sons. “My younger son Udit is the people’s person. He loves to go out , party, meet friends. My elder son Aditya is a complete recluse. Earlier I used to tell him to go out and meet friends. But he preferred to be home, writing films. When he...

Subhash K Jha revisits 2004’s innocent romantic comedy Uuf Kya Jaadoo Mohabbat Hai and also shares a fascinating behind-the-music fact!
This Rajshri production takes us back to the arcadian innocence of puppy love in Raj Kapoor’s Bobby where young people just wanna have fun, and the birds and the bees can go fly a kite…
The Rajshris deserve credit for returning to the theme of innocent love at a time when Hindi cinema candidly addresses adultery, pre-marital sex, and abortion (see the other release Yuva), and where protagonists have healthy sexual appetites. Yash (Sammir Dattani) and Pari (Pooja Kanwal) strike us as cutely conspicuous anachronisms, out of step with the cinematic definition of man-woman relationships.
Love, according to the time-warped Rajshris , is meaningless when fastened to sex. In Uuf Kya Jaadoo Mohabbat Hai, while the young love-birds have fun, another couple(newcomers Mini Tiwari and Aziz) have sex.
Try to figure that equation out,...

Subhash K Jha turns the focus to the chartbusting songs in Prakash Mehra’s myriad of excellent films.
1. ‘Bekhudi mein sanam utth gaye jo Kadam’ (Haseena Maan Jayegi): Prakash Mehra’s first directorial starred not Amitabh Bachchan but Shashi Kapoor. And it was a superhit. The songs by Kalyanji-Anandji played a large hand in its success. This dulcet Lata-Rafi duet has lingered in music lovers’ minds and hearts forever and a day. Says Anandji, “Prakash Mehra and us, my brother Kalyanji and I, worked closely together. Even before we did the music for his first directorial venture Haseena Maan Jayegi, we worked with him when he was an assistant to filmmaker Mohan Segal. Tab se hum saath mein rahe. Ek tuning ban gayi thi… We had a good rapport. Prakash Mehra also wrote some songs for us in Purnima. And when he turned producer with Zanjeer, we did the music.

Starring Arjun Kapoor, Prithviraj, Jackie Shroff, and Rishi Kapoor, Aurangzeb, directed by Atul Sabharwal released in 2013. In this feature, Subhash K Jha revisits the crime thriller, and Rishi Kapoor speaks on being the villain – he was not happy with that label.
Sapna se badaa apna hota hai…It’s okay to sacrifice one’s dreams for the sake of those you love. This is a recurrent thought in this hard-hitting family drama about fatally flawed people who flock together in search of happiness that is snatched from them by a fate far more cruel and savage than what we generally see and recognize as destiny.
The destiny that seems to underline the lives in writer-director Atul Sabharwal’s drama of family feuds is as flawed as it is rich in resonances. And why not! Perfection is as boring as it is unbelievable. Sabharwal spreads out a hectic, hefty horizon of dark grey,...

Subhash K Jha takes a look back at Honey Irani’s 2003 Armaan which starred Preity Zinta, Anil Kapoor, Gracy Singh, Randhir Kapoor, and the Amitabh Bachchan. The feature not only revisits the terrific medical drama, but it also shares highlights from an interview he conducted with Amitabh Bachchan.
The aged but agile doctor swoops up the dying child in his arms and runs through the jungle to the hospital. In the process, he loses his own life. The most memorable moment in Honey Irani’s noble but finally unsuccessful large-screen soap opera reminds you of Dilip Kumar trying to stop vehicles on the road to take his dying wife to the hospital in Yash Chopra’s Mashaal.
Coincidentally, Mashaal too starred Anil Kapoor. As Dr Aakash Sinha, Kapoor puts in an earnest performance. His sequences with his father, played with sophisticated wisdom by the inimitable Amitabh Bachchan, are the muted highlights of the film.

Director Tigmanshu Dhulia reflects on 21 years Of his crime drama Charas, what it was like working with the late Irrfan Khan and also reveals what is coming next in this special conversation with Subhash K Jha.
Your sophomore film Charas was not as well received as your first film Haasil. Was that a disappointment?
It was twenty-one years ago, my second film Charas got released. Expectations were high. But it did not come close to the kind of admiration my debut film Haasil received.
Was Charas a challenge to make?
I loved making it. Visually it is one of my best works because the canvas was enormous. I think it was ahead of its time. The plot was too thick and twisted many just did not get it. It happens when the filmmaker is trying too hard and feeling superior to his audience. My bad.

Poonam Dhillon speaks with Subhash K Jha about 30 years since she debuted on the big screen with Yash Chopra’s drama Trishul, which starred of Shashi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Raakhee Gulzar, Gita Siddharth and Sachin.
It is 30 years of your debut film Trishul?
Wow, so many years have passed!!! I was a 15-year-old kid who had just taken the 10th standard exam. I knew nothing about acting, screen, or stars at that time, having seen only probably 4 to 5 films in my life.
Which films had you seen before?
Dosti many times at all Children’s Day celebrations in school), Guddi, Mera Naam Joker, and I think maybe a few more. That’s it. I was super-shy and awkward and had no idea What Huge stars I was working with. This was the zamana before the internet and Instagram.
Your song in Lataji’s voice, ‘Gapuchi’ was a big hit?...

Bollywood actress Divya Dutta is one of the prominent names in the film industry. With a career spanning over three decades, the actress has proved her versatility with every performance. Let’s revisit when Divya Dutta opened up on her role in the blockbuster film Veer-Zaara.

The diva shared, “I was sitting at the movie’s premier holding my mother’s hand. It’s a Yash Chopra film, so the whole world would be watching it. I enjoyed it a lot. But, at the same time, I was worried I would be stereotyped as the best friend of all the heroines in the industry. Everyone runs after the one who looks good and leaves the rest behind.”

Actor Dhaba Struggle Story (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Sanjay Mishra took a long and rough walk in Bollywood. His first film, Oh Darling! Yeh Hai India! was released in 1995 and also starred Shah Rukh Khan. A debut like this ought to have been his ticket to lead roles, but he continued to lose out on good opportunities. On a very small scale, he did what he could to remain in the spotlight, appearing in films like Satya and Dil Se.
Slowly, light began shining on him in 1999, after he had done an advertisement for the Cricket World Cup in which he portrayed Apple Singh. His popularity rose with the hit series Office Office, where he proved himself to fit well in films of the comedy genre-Golmaal, Bunty Aur Babli, and All the Best.
However, personal adversities kept trailing his success in humor. The death of his father in the early 2000s devastated him.

However, the veteran actor acknowledged that his and Big B’s relationship eventually soured due to professional and personal differences. Arbaaz Khan & Wife Sshura Khan’s Clinic Spotting Turns Into A Maniac Race! (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The internet right now has turned into the ‘log kya kahenge wale rishtedaar’ who simply cannot zip it once they come to know about some private detail about someone! I blame it on the media as well for invading the privacy of celebs at times when it is totally unnecessary And the same line has yet again been crossed for Arbaaz Khan and his wife, Sshura Khan!
Arbaaz and his wife Sshura, were recently spotted outside a clinic and ever since it turned into a crazy race for baby bump spotting and pregnancy speculation. But this circus, turned ugly too soon, when the internet decided to dissect this spotting, way more than it was needed!
Arbaaz Khan and Sshura Khan were spotted at a private clinic and the pictures went viral for obvious reasons.

When Amitabh Bachchan’s First Reaction To Yash Chopra Wanting Jaya Bachchan & Rekha In Silsila Led Him To Take A Drastic Decision (Photo Credit –Facebook/Wikimedia)
Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, and Jaya Bachchan’s Silsila is an iconic movie, especially because of the off-screen link between Big B and Rekha. However, things would have been different if the initial casting had included these actresses. The movie was directed by the legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra, who initially had cast Smita Patil and Parveen Babi. Big B’s first reaction to this casting gave Chopra the confidence to change it. Keep scrolling for the deets.
The film might have generated a cult classic status, but it was a box office disappointment upon its release. There are a few reasons that might have resulted in the film’s financial failure; for example, people were not ready for the theme of extramarital affairs, Big B...

In this installment of the fabulous series, This Day That Year, Subhash K Jha revisits Salman Khan’s Lucky: No Time For Love which released on April 8th, 20 years ago.
Love is a ‘grave’ matter for the couple in this film. Much of the romantic interaction between the 40-year-old Salman Khan and the 19-year-old Sneha Ullal takes place in a graveyard in Russia, where they are holed up after riots break out all over the city.
Riot on! Gabriel Garcia Marquez got there first in Love During The Time Of Cholera. Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru’s sweet but finally unproductive concoction about cradle-snatching -love is a bit of a letdown.
Sure, the films Looks good. It even sounds good. With Sudeep Chatterjee’s cinematography creating a sweeping arc over the snowcapped violence of the landscape, the film cannot go wrong visually. But it has no heart. It pretends hard.

Yash Chopra Hum Tum ( Photo Credit – Facebook )
Romantic films have long been the backbone of Bollywood, but not all love stories receive immediate backing, even from the biggest names in the industry. One such case was Hum Tum (2004), a film that eventually became a defining moment in Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji’s careers. However, during its making, legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra had little faith in the project.
Kunal Kohli, who directed the film, recently opened up about the challenges he faced in getting it made. Despite the confidence of Aditya Chopra, Yash Chopra was far from convinced. The veteran filmmaker even dismissed the script as “ordinary” and compared it unfavorably to Mujhse Dosti Karoge!. His doubts were so strong that he refused to invest more than ₹7.5 crores and even stated that if the film failed, he wouldn’t put his name on it.

Anil Kapoor Lamhe Look ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Anil Kapoor is one of the biggest names in Bollywood history and has always been known for his commitment to roles. Throughout his illustrious career, he has played numerous characters but there was one particular decision that left both him and his audience in shock. The actor, who has sported a signature moustache for most of his career, made a bold choice to shave it off for Yash Chopra’s 1991 film Lamhe.
Starring alongside Sridevi, Kapoor took on a character that required a fresh look, a decision that did not sit well with audiences at the time. The film was a box-office disappointment upon its release, largely due to its unconventional storyline. However, Kapoor believes that his changed appearance also played a role in how the film was received. Decades later, Lamhe has found appreciation as a cult classic, but Kapoor still recalls...

Shining the spotlight on the talented actress Nanda, Subhash K Jha focuses on her life in reel and real.
Nanda, who was part of the illustrious Mangeshkar family, never got her due. And she was herself partly to blame for it. Fixated on becoming another Meena Kumari, she was typecast in weepy family-oriented roles of the all-sacrificing Choti Bahen, Beti and Badi Didi. These are actually the titles of three of her popular films where she was shown sacrificing her own happiness for the family.
Nanda did make a belated attempt to break out of her doleful image with her shocking murderous avatar in Yash Chopra’s Ittefaq and as a drug addict in Naya Nasha. But she is largely remembered for her sweet, benign domesticated roles (I can’t recall one film where Nanda was cast as a working woman) humming and chugging her way into audiences’ hearts in...

Lamhe released in 1991 was arguably Yash Chopra’s finest directorial venture. Its return to the movie theatres on March 21 would have pleased the Raja of Romance. Its still-progressive theme of a generation-challenged romantic alliance is deeply moving and romantic.
I remember meeting Yash Chopra some years after the release of Lamhe, and he was still mourning its commercial failure. “ Lamhe will always remain close to my heart. I made it out of a deep sense of conviction. The love story between the hero Anil Kapoor and the daughter of a woman whom the hero loved was tricky; I knew it. In fact, I had gone with the role to another superstar, whom I wouldn’t like to name, and he said no immediately, ‘Yash, have you gone mad? You want me to romance the daughter of the character I love?’ But I was adamant. I had to make this film.

To celebrate the brilliant Rani Mukherjee’s birthday, Subhash K Jha shares some special memories and outstanding performances by the actress in this fabulous feature.
Though she was already one by then, the first time I met Rani Mukherjee, I couldn’t believe she was a star. Short and pretty plain, she walked into my then-good friend Akshay Kumar’s makeup room to say hello. They were both shooting in the same studio on adjoining sets…he for Khiladi 420 and she for Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega .
Akshay and I were having lunch with some friends when the door opened. Rani walked in wearing clothes that depict a typical party sequence in our films and heels so high they looked like stilts!
Rani, being Rani, shook hands with everyone in the room with a democratic smile and saved a special smile and a hug for the hero in the room.

When Tom Cruise and Shah Rukh Khan honored Slumdog Millionaire (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Shah Rukh Khan holds a hefty reputation as Bollywood’s “king,” yet the actor has willingly distanced himself from heading west. The Devdas actor has graced Hollywood’s talk shows and media often, occasionally venturing to compare himself with Tom Cruise to effortlessly spotlight his own lavish life and career in India.
That’s not to say Khan has ever lacked tantalizing offers from Hollywood. In 2009, Danny Boyle, director of the Academy Award-winning Slumdog Millionaire, eyed him for the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire host role. Padma Khanna, a trained Kathak exponent who turns a year older on March 10, was a better dancer than all the other dancing stars of her era. She could sizzle in cabarets and mujras without ever looking vulgar. Many iconic songs of the dance genre in the Hindi films of the 1960s-1980s were filmed on her.
To begin with, she had a minor role in the Biswajit starrer Biwi Aur Makaan in 1966, where she was billed as ‘Kumari Padma’. The really big break was the bold striptease in Vijay Anand’s Johnny Mera Naam. The song ‘Husn ke lakhon rang aag hai yeh badan kaun sa ang dekhoge’, and her provocative but never obscene dance moves as she stripped down to a bikini in front of a drooling Premnath, placed Padma on the perch of the prancing pyramid.
The offers poured in. And Padma made sway while the song shined.

In this amazing list, Subhash K Jha reveals his choice for the top 10 female characters in Bollywood.
Nargis’ Radha in Mehboob Khan’s Mother India(1957):
Nargis played Radha, the deserted wife who brings up her two sons on her own and kills one of them when he turns into an outlaw. For the first time in a Hindi film, the female protagonist was portrayed as strong, resilient, conscientious, and doughty without losing her femininity. Nargis won both national and international awards.
Meena Kumari’s Choti Bahu in Guru Dutt’s Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962): In the feudal household where women were content wearing expensive sarees and jewellery and never mind what their husbands did with other women, this wife dared to raise her voice. If her husband liked to drink, no problem. Choti Bahu hit the bottle to have him stay at home. The portrait of a woman...

Yash Chopra’s Dil To Pagal Hai (Dtph) released in 1997, attempts to be the best-choice Valentinian film. Sorrily, much of it looks dated now. The excitement of watching Shah Rukh Khan searching for “perfect love” through a gauntlet of 12 songs and sets resembling a 12-year-old kids’ summer camp party fantasy wears thin.
Shiamak Davar’s “original” choreography now looks like a series of tricky hand movements with no support from the feet. The costumes have understandably dated. As Rahul, Shah Rukh Khan shares zero chemistry with the ostensible love of his life, Pooja, played by Madhuri Dixit. For more than half the film, scriptwriters Aditya Chopra, Tanuja Chandra, Pamela Chopra, and Yash Chopra keep the two apart.
It is astonishing how four kindred spirits came up with a screenplay so wispy and lightweight, the drama keeps floating away into la-la land. Especially when it claims to be an “eternal” love story.

In another fabulous installment of This Day That Year: Subhash K Jha celebrates 28 Years Of Sridevi’s Finest Performance in Judaii.
In Sridevi’s oeuvre, Judaii is not regarded as one of her great performances. It’s a below-average film lifted to likeability by the central performance. I regard Sridevi in Judaii to be superior to her lauded performances in Chandni, Sadma, Lamhe and Mr India.
The truth is she is earth-shatteringly good as a screechy, overbearing housewife who loses her husband to greed.
Speaking of Sri in slush, Judaii, directed by the late Raj Kanwar (nice guy) and produced by Sri’s darling husband Boney, is a textbook on politically incorrect filmmaking, with Sri playing a human banshee screaming and swearing at her working-class husband Anil Kapoor until he marries the moneyed Urmila Matondkar. Her last hurrah before she bowed out to play wife and mother. Judaii is a...

Rekha’s Father Gemini Ganesan Once Talked About Her Alleged Affair With Amitabh Bachchan! (Photo Credit – Koimoi/Wikipedia)
Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha are two names that have been etched together forever. The two superstars who made one of the best on-screen couples of Hindi Cinema were more talked about because of their off-screen chemistry and alleged history that none ever confirmed or denied publicly, and few of their close ones confirmed in murmurs and nods!
Neither of their families ever talked about the alleged closeness that was termed an affair by the gossip mills. However, it was once that the Umrao Jaan actress’s father and renowned South Indian superstar Gemini Ganesan opened up on the rumor.
In a very old interview with Star & Style magazine, Ganesan talked about his daughter Rekha’s alleged link-up and said, “People tell me that Rekha has messed up her personal life by getting involved with Amitabh.

Subhash K Jha reminisces about talking with Yash Chopra about Dil To Pagal Hai which starred Karisma Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit and Shah Rukh Khan. This chat with the iconic director was a week after the release of the film in 1997. Dil To Pagal Hai, which re-opens this Friday , was declared a bumper hit.
Yash Chopra was happy. And not hiding it. When I reached his bungalow, this gracious movie moghul greeted me at the door and welcomed me with a hug. “Please congratulate me. My film is a roaring hit. People just can’t get enough of it. Shah Rukh called five minutes ago to crib he can’t get tickets for his family. I am so happy with the success of Dil To Pagal Hai. It proves that love and love stories will never get outdated. When a film clicks, the entire film industry benefits.”
Yashji had no qualms...

Subhash K Jha revisits Vinod Pande’s controversial film, Sins, as it clocks 20 years.
Vinod Pande’s Sins is certainly not a sinful pretext for gratuitous sex and nudity. Ripping a cruel page out of the newspapers, writer-director Vinod Pande has reconstructed a dramatic and often shocking tale of forbidden love between a Catholic priest and a junior disciple.
Pande is never a stranger to the dark side of love and relationships. In Sins, too, he doesn’t stop at the bedroom door but manages to build an intimidating pyramid of desperate passion between Father Williams (Shiny Ahuja) and Rosemary (Seema Rahmani).
One recalls the old 1960 film The Priest’s Wife in which Italian director Carlo Ponti cast Sophia Loren as the seductress humorously hankering the priest Marcello Mastroianni. In Sins, Vinod Pande denudes the theme of all its inherent humour – what we see is a luminously lit, starkly shot film,...
