‘Jason Goes to Hell’ & ‘Jason X’ 4K Review – Evil Gets an Upgrade in Flawed But Fascinating ‘Friday the 13th’ Sequels
Image
Horror fans can be a fickle bunch, especially when it comes to nostalgic franchises. We don’t want the same story regurgitated with new characters, but straying too far from the established formula risks losing what drew fans to the property in the first place.

After churning out eight Friday the 13th movies with little deviation over the course of nine years, Paramount sold the rights to Jason Voorhees to New Line Cinema. “The House that Freddy Built” teamed with original Friday the 13th director/producer Sean S. Cunningham to revive the slasher icon with 1993’s Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday — which sidelines Jason, does not show Hell, and is not the final Friday.

The film kicks off with one of the franchise’s best prologues, condensing all the slasher tropes into a single sequence that subverts expectations by culminating in Jason being blown to smithereens by a Swat team.

Jason Universe gets a new logo to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Friday the 13th
Image
Today – May 9, 2025 – marks the 45th anniversary of the release of one of the most popular horror movies ever made, Friday the 13th. The movie that launched my favorite franchise, and one that I feel is underrated, as it’s a great film that often gets overshadowed by its sequels. Last year, the Friday the 13th franchise rights holders at Horror Inc. announced that they were launching the Jason Universe, which would encompass “new Friday the 13th activations that will span a wide range of platforms from entertainment, games, immersive experiences, merchandise and more to be announced @JasonUniverse13 on social media or by visiting the official Jason Universe website.” Now, to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the original film, Jason Universe has unveiled their new logo in a video that can be seen at the bottom of this article.

As fans know, the Friday the 13th franchise was recently bogged down...

Image
It’s a big day for Friday the 13th fans!

Today marks the 45th anniversary of writer Victor Miller and director Sean S. Cunningham‘s 1980 slasher hit arriving in theaters. Horror Inc. is celebrating accordingly with a new Jason Universe logo honoring the franchise’s legacy, which we can exclusively unveil.

The 45th anniversary Jason Universe logo makes its debut below along with a new motion logo video featuring a new Jason mask and original audio composed exclusively for this video by Harry Manfredini, composer of the majority of the Friday the 13th movies and Friday the 13th: The Game.

Alongside the new Jason Voorhees mask, the logo text sports an appropriate “machete metal” finish.

What is Jason Universe? The short answer is that it’s a multi-platform expansion, first announced a year ago as the “new era from the original owners of the Friday the 13th franchise.” With signs...

Blood in Zero G as ‘Jason X’ Returns to Kill Again
Image
Horror meets hyperspace in Jason X, the long-misunderstood 2001 entry in the Friday the 13th franchise, which is returning in a newly restored 4K Ultra HD edition on 19 May. Often dismissed on its original release for its outrageous setting and campy tone, Jason X has since found its audience as a gory cult gem with a fondness for creative kills, gleeful absurdity, and one of the most bonkers franchise pivots in horror history.

Directed by veteran special effects artist Jim Isaac, who previously worked on Gremlins and eXistenZ, Jason X transports the hockey-masked killer far beyond Crystal Lake and into deep space. It’s the year 2455 and Earth has been rendered uninhabitable. A crew of students and scientists investigating the now-desolate planet stumbles upon the frozen remains of Jason Voorhees in a ruined facility near the former site of the infamous summer camp. Naturally, they bring the corpse aboard their spaceship,...

Image
Last Updated on April 12, 2025

Sean S. Cunningham will always be primarily remembered for directing the original Friday the 13th, but he has taken the helm of some other movies that are worth checking out, like 1985’s The New Kids and the deep sea horror film DeepStar Six. The 1989 movie will now be getting a new 4K Blu-ray release, according to Blu-ray.com. Kino Lorber is behind this physical media distribution. The movie stars Taurean Blacque, Nancy Everhard, Greg Evigan, Miguel Ferrer, and Nia Peeples. DeepStar Six is set to hit retailers on June 17.

The description reads,

Not All Aliens Come From Space! Far below the surface of the unforgiving sea, the daring crew of DeepStar Six are explorers in a forbidding world of impenetrable darkness and unimaginable pressure. They have invaded the icy fathoms into which no human has ever ventured. Their mission is to establish a top secret Navy base on the ocean floor.

‘Friday The 13th: The Game’ Servers to Shut Down Tonight
Sean Cunningham 2015
Today’s unfortunately the day to say goodbye for fans of Gun Interactive’s Friday The 13th: The Game. As we learned last year, Gun Interactive’s license for the asymmetrical multiplayer game expired last year, and tonight, the Friday The 13th: The Game‘s servers are being sunset. Meaning, today’s your final chance to play the game online.

There’s still no word on if players will be able to play the game’s multiplayer mode offline.

This obviously adds salt to the wound for fans, as the years-long dispute between director Sean Cunningham and Friday the 13th (1980) writer Victor Miller prevented Gun Interactive from adding any more content to Friday The 13th: The Game, most notably Uber Jason from Jason X. Fans had tried the do-it-yourself approach with a fan mod, but that was hit with a cease and desist from Horror Inc. not long after it was revealed.

Killer Score: How Harry Manfredini Helped Redefine the Slasher Sound [Friday the 13th Week]
Image
Presented by Paramount Scares, Friday the 13th Week sees Bloody Disgusting heading to Camp Crystal Lake for a series of features that celebrate the Voorhees family and their influence. Yesterday, Jenn Adams celebrated the franchise’s final girls, and today, Rachel Reeves, sings praises for the music man behind the mayhem.

Harry Manfredini’s score for Friday the 13th is iconic. More than just beautifully evocative and eerily unsettling, the music is one of the key elements that elevates the film from a copycat cash grab to a worthy slasher successor. Manfredini’s score is as integral to the Friday the 13th franchise as Jason himself, offering a seamless blend of his original ideas and potent reference points. To celebrate this Friday, the 13th, let’s examine what makes Manfredini’s score such a powerful asset to the film and a pivotal score that helped redefine the slasher sound.

Could Friday the 13th: The Game be revived? Jason Universe X account stirs up speculation

Any chance of a new Friday the 13th movie going into production is on the distant horizon, but there are other things going on with the Friday the 13th franchise now that the copyright lawsuit between the original film’s producer / director Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller has ended with Miller gaining the copyright to the first movie in the United States. Miller and his lawyer Marc Toberoff have teamed up with Horror Inc., which is headed up by Robert Barsamian and holds the rights to the overall franchise, to develop a TV series called Crystal Lake for A24 and the Peacock streaming service, and last month it was announced that they’re launching the Jason Universe, which will involve “new Friday the 13th activations spanning a wide range of platforms from entertainment, games, immersive experiences, merchandise and more to be announced throughout 2024.” @JasonUniverse13 accounts were set up...

The Hills Have Eyes 2 (2007) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The Hills Have Eyes 2. No, not that one. That’s The Hills Have Eyes Part 2 and has one of the greatest things ever filmed where a dog, an actual dog, has a flashback and its just, muah, chef’s kiss. While I actually think that original 1985 sequel is way too much fun for its own good – it was written and directed by Craven, brings back Michael Berryman, has Harry Manfredini give us the score, and oh yeah, has a dog flashback. A Dog, Flashback – I’m not here to talk about that one that is probably so bad it’s good. I’m here to discuss the true black sheep of this inbred mountain family and give you all a look at the movie that is not a remake of the sequel but rather a sequel to the remake. The Hills Have Eyes 2 (watch it Here) is a...

The team has already responded on X in regards to the orders, and will comply with the request. They acknowledge that the project is “most likely over”, but do plane to work on other projects. “We are still waiting for response from some people we have contacted, but for now we are working on removing all of Horror Inc’s owned content.”

Not only is the Resurrected project affected, but another modding project, Friday The 13th: The Complete Edition,...

The 2009 ‘Friday the 13th’ Remake Is the Best in the Franchise, Fight Me
Image
When Sean Cunningham and Victor Miller collaborated on 1980's Friday the 13th, they weren't looking to do more than create a Halloween ripoff. Their finished film was something more. It worked as a thrilling whodunit, with a chilling score from Harry Manfredini and disgustingly great effects from Tom Savini. As Ghostface would tell you, Jason Voorhees doesn't show up until the sequel. The hockey-masked killer ruled the 80s, with eight entries total coming out during the decade. They were campy and silly, but always fun, including Part V: A New Beginning, which Jason isn't even in.

Sundance 2024 Review: In A Violent Nature Gushes Exquisite Gore and Reimagines the Slasher Structure with Newfound Originality
Image
In A Violent Nature might be Canadian writer and director Chris Nash’s feature debut, but he’s hardly an untested rookie (and it shows). His ABCs of Death 2 segment “Z is for Zygote” teases his knack for producing practical effects and what to expect by the bucket full in his subversive Sundance slasher. Nash’s experience in effects departments, like serving as On-Set Creature Effects Supervisor for Psycho Goreman, translates into a slasher experience that stands pound-for-pound with modern masterclasses of mutilation like the Terrifier series. In A Violent Nature is one of the bloodiest, most punishing, and refreshingly original slashers in some time, but its unique approach will divide horror audiences — that’s the looming risk that comes along with shoot-for-the-moon ambitions.

Everything starts at the site of the “White Pines Slaughter.” Cinematographer Pierce Derks opens on a shot of rotted and mossy wood planks, remnants of a...

What The Chilling Whisper In Friday The 13th Is Really Saying
Image
For the entirety of my twenties and a chunk of my thirties, I knew the inebriated pleasure of debating the most trivial subjects known to humankind via what we used to call the "bar argument." Oh sure, people still knock back beers and fiercely debate the Hegelian messaging of the "Airport" franchise, but there was a time, a glorious time, when an elbow-tipping blowhard could loudly assert as fact that "The White Shadow" was an "All in the Family" spinoff, and no one could pull a rectangular device out of their pocket to authoritatively prove they're utterly full of horse pucky. Short of pulling Norman Jewison out from behind the jukebox for a McLuhan-esque correction, this dolt could double and triple down, and all you could do was yell at them. We've lost so much.

The best bar arguments tended to revolve around song lyrics, but movie quotes ran a very close second.

The film, which stars stars Jojo Siwa and Jade Pettyjohn, is currently in post-production.

Make Your Wish: Robert Kurtzman’s ‘Wishmaster’ Is Just as Fun, Fearless and Frightening 26 Years Later
Image
The horror genre thrives upon cautionary tales where arrogant individuals believe that they can outsmart some supernatural force for their own gain. It’s for this reason that the greed-quenching Djinn and parables where people learn to be careful what they wish for, usually in the most morbid ways possible, are popular horror tropes. Djinn are a fascinating concept, but they’ve struggled to truly make their mark in cinema between largely-forgettable films like Jinn, The Djinn, Wish Upon, and even George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing. But Djinn stories can still be fun and effective in the right context. And Robert Kurtzman’s Wishmaster is still the premier djinn horror film over 25 years later.

Wishmaster is a movie that understands the unabashed joys of a big, dumb plot where there’s a giant magical gemstone that’s the key to the Djinn’s powers because why the hell not?...

‘Swamp Thing’ 4K Review – Wes Craven’s Superhero Movie Is More Welcome Than Ever in 2023
Image
Long before every conceivable comic book character received a film adaptation in the hopes of becoming the next blockbuster, there was Superman. While box office returns diminished over the course of four movies, the Man of Steel’s big-screen success heralded a crop of other superhero movies. Producers Benjamin Melniker and Michael E. Uslan swooped in to acquire the film rights to DC Comics’ other most well-known character, Batman (and they remain executive producers on every Batman movie), along with a more obscure title, Swamp Thing.

Not unlike a common trajectory in the modern comic book movie boom – in which filmmakers who have proven themselves in the genre space are given the keys to superhero properties – Wes Craven was enlisted to write and direct 1982’s Swamp Thing despite his unfamiliarity with the source material. While he would go on to make a name for himself with A Nightmare on Elm Street next,...

Wes Craven at an event for Scream 4 (2011)
Review: Wes Craven’s Swamp Thing Gets 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Collector’s Edition
Wes Craven at an event for Scream 4 (2011)
Veering sharply away from the visceral horror that put him on the map, Wes Craven followed up the game-changing The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes with the one-two punch of the silly, surreal Deadly Blessing and the comic-book adaptation Swamp Thing. An enjoyable enough romp if taken as an amiably lunk-headed action flick, Swamp Thing starts off with an effectively mounted first act that soon gives way to a lot of splashing around in the swamps, punctuated with some incongruously poetic (and oddly endearing) Beauty and the Beast-type moments, and liberally peppered with all the airboat crashes and cigar-chomping David Hess close-ups you could ever want. Add to that running tally Adrienne Barbeau doffing her wardrobe for some tastefully lensed skinny-dipping and an ultra-suave, Nietzsche-spouting turn from Louis Jourdan as villainous Dr. Anton Arcane and it all adds up to a surefire cult film in the making.

Mads Mikkelsen in Hannibal (2013)
Crystal Lake: Tananarive Due and Steven Barnes on the brainstorming sessions for Friday the 13th series
Mads Mikkelsen in Hannibal (2013)
A Friday the 13th TV series called Crystal Lake is coming our way from Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, Friday the 13th franchise rights holders Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian (plus Miller’s lawyer Marc Toberoff), A24, and the Peacock streaming service. Unfortunately, any progress the show was making has been put on hold during the writers strike – but earlier this year, Fuller assembled a writers room that spent six weeks brainstorming ideas and breaking down the scripts that will make up the first season of the series. Two of the writers in that room were author Tananarive Due, who has written multiple novels over the last thirty years and executive produced Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror, and her husband Steven Barnes, who is also an author and has also contributed scripts to shows like Stargate Sg-1, The Outer Limits, and the ’80s version of The Twilight Zone. Two Sentence Horror Stories Quietly Canceled at The CW
Image
Many fan favorite shows have been recently canceled by The CW amid content strategy changes at the network, and it's been confirmed that another popular series was quietly axed as well. Back in 2019, The CW premiered the first season of Two Sentence Horror Stories, an anthology series with each episode featuring a self-contained plot and cast of characters. Season 2 would follow in early 2021 with the third season airing in early 2022.

Halfway through 2023, there's been no word on when Two Sentence Horror Stories may potentially return for a fourth season, leading to speculation that the show was finished. TVLine reports that any such speculation would be accurate. The horror anthology series was reportedly axed, which was "to the surprise of perhaps no one," with no fourth season on the way.

The CW's massacre of content has claimed many other victims in recent months. Most recently, the network put an end to the Walker prequel Walker Independence,...

Harry Manfredini Says He's Working on a New Friday the 13th Video Game
Image
Jason Voorhees isn't finished with the video game world just yet. Back in 2017, the masked killer made a big mark in video games with the release of Friday the 13th: The Game. It was an exciting time for gamers who were fans of the franchise, as it was the first they had seen of Jason since the reboot movie was released in 2009. The game's publisher, Gun Media, recently announced that their license for Friday the 13th will soon expire, and the game will no longer be for sale after 2023.

The issues with the Friday the 13th rights appear to have been resolved, as Jason will return in an all-new TV series in the works at Peacock. Meanwhile, it's been revealed that a new Friday the 13th video game is also in the works. The news was broken by franchise composer Harry Manfredini, who provided music for most of the Friday the 13th...

Friday the 13th: The Game license will expire in December
Image
Yesterday, we were able to share some cool news about a Friday the 13th video game, as franchise composer Harry Manfredini says a new game is in the works. And now we have to share some news that I find to be a bit heartbreaking. Gun Interactive, the company behind the Friday the 13th: The Game that was released in 2017, has announced that their license to the Friday the 13th property will expire on December 31st, 2023.

“On that date, Friday the 13th: The Game will no longer be available for sale, both physically and digitally. The game will, however, continue to function through at least December 31st, 2024, if you already own it. At this time, we’ve made the decision to reduce the price to $4.99 for the base game and $0.99 for each piece of Dlc content. We will continue to offer the title and content at that price point...

‘Friday The 13th: The Game’ License Expiring This December, Will Be Delisted From Digital Stores and No Longer Sold Physically
Kevin Bacon, Adrienne King, Ari Lehman, Robbi Morgan, Betsy Palmer, and Jeannine Taylor in Vendredi 13 (1980)
With longtime Friday The 13th composer Harry Manfredini revealing a potential new Friday The 13th video game adaptation in development, you’re probably wondering what’s going on with IllFonic and Gun Interactive’s 2017 title Friday The 13th: The Game. We now have our answer thanks to an official Twitter post. And sadly for fans of the game, much like what happened with Friday The 13th: Killer Puzzle, licensing has reared its ugly head.

The official Twitter account for Friday The 13th: The Game has announced that the license for the title will expire on December 31, 2023. This means that the game will no longer be available for sale either digitally or physically after that date.

If you do own the game, it will still continue to function “through at least December 31, 2024”. The team has made the decision to reduce the price of the base game to $4.99 Usd, with each of...

'Friday the 13th' Game in Development With Harry Manfredini Returning
Image
It’s been a dark time to be a Friday the 13th fan. However, with the legal battle between director Sean S. Cunningham and writer Victor Miller finally wrapping up, there’s been some much-needed light at the end of the tunnel for Jason Voorhees. There’s already a new Peacock prequel series Crystal Lake on the way and a film from Cunningham in the early stages of development. Now there also appears to be a new Friday the 13th video coming and franchise composer Harry Manfredini is returning to score the project.

Friday the 13th composer Harry Manfredini says a new video game is in the works
Image
The copyright lawsuit between original Friday the 13th producer/director Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller brought a stop to any further content being added to the Friday the 13th video game that came from IllFonic and Gun Media and was released in 2017 – which is a shame, because I love that game and have spent hundreds of hours playing it. To me, that was the perfect video game to go with the Friday the 13th franchise. But now that the copyright lawsuit has come to an end, franchise composer Harry Manfredini has revealed that a new video game is in development!

William Lockwood of Rely on Horror recently crossed paths with Manfredini at a Crystal Lake Reunion event at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco in Blairstown, New Jersey, the filming location for the original Friday the 13th, and Manfredini “revealed that he will be working on a new, as yet unannounced Friday the 13th...

‘Friday the 13th’ Composer Harry Manfredini Involved in New Video Game Adaptation?
Kevin Bacon, Adrienne King, Ari Lehman, Robbi Morgan, Betsy Palmer, and Jeannine Taylor in Vendredi 13 (1980)
With the rights to the Friday the 13th franchise finally starting to clear up and a new TV series headed to Peacock next year, you’re probably wondering where that leaves any future video game adaptations of the franchise. Well, according to longtime series composer Harry Manfredini, there’s apparently something new in the works as we speak.

RelyOnHorror‘s William Lockwood recently attended Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco’s Crystal Lake Reunion event, where he met up with Manfredini to talk about his experiences composing the scores for the Friday the 13th series, as well as the 2017 game by IllFonic and Gun Interactive.

According to Manfredini, he’ll be working on the music for a new, as yet unannounced Friday the 13th game!

Manfredini says that the new game is being developed by a different developer this time around, and will feature “more realistic looking” characters. It will also apparently not be...

The ‘Jaws’ Score Didn’t Just Enhance the Monster, It Is the Monster
Image
The horror genre is known to have some of film's most legendary scores. It's music, after all, that helps to manipulate our emotions when we watch a movie, and what better way to manipulate one's emotions than through fear? Michael Myers is inseparable from the suspense-building beats composed by John Carpenter for Halloween. You can't watch a Friday the 13th movie without doing the "Ki ki ki ma ma ma" sound that composer Harry Manfredini created. And then there's the greatest film composer of them all, John Williams. His efforts single-handedly saved a young Steven Spielberg in 1975 with Jaws. The mechanical shark for the film, jokingly named Bruce, famously kept breaking down, meaning that the score had to be depended on even more to do what the visuals couldn't. To say that Williams' score worked is an understatement. The music Williams created outshines its great white monster. It's not the shark we're scared of.

Crystal Lake showrunner Bryan Fuller had a meeting with Friday the 13th legend Tom Savini

Friday the 13th (watch it Here) heroine Adrienne King, whose character Alice Hardy didn’t last very long into Friday the 13th Part 2 (watch that one Here), is going to have a recurring role on the show, and last week she posted that she recently had a meeting with Fuller about what he and the writing team (including Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson) are cooking up. Now, Fuller has revealed that he has also had a meeting with special effects legend Tom Savini, who provided the makeup effects and bloodshed for both Friday the 13th and Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (you can watch it at This Link). Crystal Lake: Adrienne King meets with Bryan Fuller, says Friday the 13th TV series is coming in 2024
Image
Adrienne King played final girl Alice Hardy in the 1980 classic Friday the 13th (watch it Here), but her character didn’t make it very far into Friday the 13th Part 2 (watch that one Here) before being dispatched with an icepick. That isn’t stopping King from returning to the franchise more than forty years later, though! It was recently announced that a Friday the 13th TV series called Crystal Lake is coming our way from Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, Friday the 13th franchise rights holders Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian (plus Miller’s lawyer Marc Toberoff), A24, and the Peacock streaming service – and a couple months ago, Fuller revealed that King will have a “recurring role” on the show. Today, King took to social media to share a picture of her with Fuller… and in the caption, she mentioned that Crystal Lake is “coming 2024“.

King wrote, “Happy Friday Campers! Bryan Fuller,...

Crystal Lake Reunion – ‘Friday the 13th’ Franchise Stars Reuniting at Original Movie’s Filming Location!
Image
As most diehard fans know, the original Friday the 13th was filmed at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco, an active Boy Scouts camp in Hardwick, New Jersey. Unfortunately, the campgrounds are off limits to the public, meaning you can’t actually visit the filming locations outside of rare special events that the camp offers. And that’s where Crystal Lake Tours comes into play.

For the last few years, Friday the 13th fans have been offered the opportunity to tour the real-life Crystal Lake, and a special event this June will take that experience to the next level.

The team announces, “We made history in 2019 with the largest gathering of cast and crew from Friday the 13th since the movie was released. It was an amazing event and the fans that travelled to the camp from all over the world still rave about it. We had plans for an even larger reunion in...

Everything We Know So Far About Crystal Lake, Bryan Fuller's Friday The 13th Prequel Series
Image
Everyone remembers the sensation of fear coursing through their veins the first time they ever heard the ominous whispering of "Ki ki ki, ma ma ma" in "Friday the 13th." The terrifying slasher from Victor Miller and Sean S. Cunningham spawned a massively popular franchise and inspired countless rip-offs, but few films can hold a candle to the unbridled terror found within the trees and cabins of Camp Crystal Lake. Now, horror maven Bryan Fuller is taking us back to camp with the upcoming A24 prequel series, "Crystal Lake."

The "Friday the 13th" franchise is comprised of 12 films, three seasons of a television series, novels, comic books, video games, and plenty of tie-in merchandise. While prequel stories have been told in the novels and comics, "Crystal Lake" will be the first time we see the story of what came before Jason Voorhees' untimely death during summer camp on screen — fully fleshed out.
