Loved 'Together'? Here are 7 smart, unsettling body-horror movies to watch
Image
This roundup sticks to movies that twist flesh and identity without going full nightmare fuel.

I saw “Together” over the weekend, starring real-life couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco. Now, normally I’m not a horror guy and I can’t really handle super scary movies, but this movie landed right in the sweet spot, similar to “The Substance,” where it was more thriller meets body-horror. And I absolutely loved it. It’s super original, well-acted, scary, funny, and perfectly paced. So now I’m digging through streaming to find more movies that mess with flesh and identity in smart, weird ways. None of these are straight-up nightmare fuel — they’re the kind that are unsettling but still totally watchable. Here’s my personal ranking of the best body-horror movies you can stream right now.

Top 7 body-horror movies on streaming right now

No. 6: ‘A Different Man’

Judd Apatow Reveals How Steve Carell's 'Anchorman' Role Inspired 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin'
Image
Judd Apatow is looking back on how Steve Carell‘s hilarious turn in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy helped launch one of his biggest movies.

During an appearance on The Lamorning After Podcast, the comedy filmmaker revealed that Steve’s scene-stealing work as Brick Tamland directly inspired The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

“Carell was so funny that it was blowing everyone’s mind,” he said.

“It was this thing where everyone was killing it, but people were especially shocked at how riotous Steve was being all day with these crazy improvs. And it was just something magical happening with Carell doing Brick.”

Keep reading to find out more…

At the time, Judd was known for spotting and elevating rising talent, like Jason Segel in Knocked Up before Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Seth Rogen in The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Judd approached Steve to see if he had any ideas for a lead role.

Brightburn (2019) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
Just six short years ago, James Gunn and his friends made a movie about an evil version of teenage Superman. Not Bizarro Superman or Ultraman. An unofficial, deranged, and horrifying version that killed his own parents and wanted to destroy the earth with pure teenage angst. Who instead of saving squirrels, watched girls in their bedrooms late at night. Oh, and exploded lightbulb shards into a waitress’s eyeball before ripping apart her insides and placing them in his spaceship clubhouse for his parents to find. The same guy who is now the co-running the entire DC Universe and director of the colorful, happy Superman of 2025 once spearheaded the effort to create the antithesis to Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in a completely different way. It’s awesome that the powers that be let this meta-movie exist at all. That Sony allowed Gunn and company to make a hard-r,...

Beloved Disney Channel Star Reflects On Their Hunger Games Audition In New Memoir
Image
Alyson Stoner looks back on their Katniss Everdeen audition for The Hunger Games in their new memoir. Based on the Suzanne Collins novel of the same name, the first installment in the hit action adventure franchise was released in 2012.

The first film introduced Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, with the rest of the cast including Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Stanley Tucci, Elizabeth Banks, and Woody Harrelson, among others. The film was a hit, paving the way for three direct sequels and a prequel, with another prequel called The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping now on the way.

In a new excerpt from their memoir, Semi-Well-Adjusted Despite Literally Everything, (via Vanity Fair) Stoner, who uses they/ them pronouns, reflects on their attempt to join the Hunger Games franchise in the lead role. Every James Gunn Movie Ranked (Including Superman)
Image
James Gunn has had quite the journey when it comes to his Hollywood career. From his early days as a writer working with Troma Entertainment to his mainstream screenwriting breakthrough with his two live-action "Scooby-Doo" films and "Dawn of the Dead," Gunn has showcased a love for colorful characters amidst the backdrop of niche genres. However, he would make his directorial debut with his horror comedy, "Slither" in 2006, followed by his sophomore outing, "Super" in 2010.

However, most audiences were introduced to James Gunn's sensibilities with "Guardians of the Galaxy" in 2014. Although Marvel Studios is often criticized for its movies following a distinct formula, Gunn stood out as one of the few filmmakers whose signature style remained prominent amidst the hit-making factory that the Marvel Cinematic Universe was at its prime. The fact that he turned D-list Marvel characters like the Guardians into A-listers within the general public cannot be stressed enough.

George Clooney Made His Movie Debut In A Sequel To A Jaws Rip-Off
Image
George Clooney is one of the most beloved and successful actors in the world, which only makes it that much more surprising to learn his first-ever movie was a total disaster. "Grizzy II: Revenge" was a horror thriller about a grizzly bear who goes on a deadly rampage. However, despite being shot in 1983, the film was put on the shelf since it was unable to finish some of its special effects due to a lack of funding. But while it was initially expected to only be delayed by a few years, the "Grizzly" sequel wound up being postponed for four decades, eventually being released to the public in 2021.

You might think Clooney would be excited for his intended-debut film to finally release, but the actor reacted to the news more with lighthearted dread. "I haven't seen it — and I don't know that I want to," Clooney told The Sun in...

Before Superman, Nathan Fillion And James Gunn Teamed Up For This Sci-Fi Horror Comedy
Image
Some things just go together perfectly, like peanut butter and jelly, coffee and cherry pie, and Nathan Fillion and James Gunn. The Canadian-American actor and American writer/director/co-ceo of DC Studios have been working together for decades on all kinds of projects, including Gunn's recent big screen kick-off for his DC Universe, "Superman." In "Superman," written and directed by Gunn, Fillion plays Green Lantern Guy Gardner, a very different version of the DC hero than the one many fans know and love, Hal Jordan. (Fillion previously voiced Jordan in multiple direct-to-home-media DC animated movies, but the live-action role at the time went to his former "Two Guys and a Girl" co-star Ryan Reynolds instead.)

In fact, Fillion has starred in more Gunn projects than just about anyone, save maybe Gunn's own brother Sean Gunn, going all the way back to the director's 2005 feature debut, "Slither." "Slither" is a...

Elle Fanning Credits Fans for Her ‘Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ Casting
Image
Elle Fanning said Hunger Games fans are the reason she was cast as Effie Trinket in the upcoming prequel film.

During a recent interview with MTV, the actress chatted about her casting in Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping and taking the role over from Elizabeth Banks, who portrayed an older version of Effie in the franchise’s first four films.

“It was funny because I think fans made this happen in a way,” Fanning said. “The studio [Lionsgate] said they were getting kind of hounded online, like, ‘Elle needs to play Effie.’”

The A Complete Unknown star added that she’s especially excited to play Effie because she’s been “a huge fan” for some time.

“Effie has always been my favorite character,” she explained. “I think Elizabeth Banks brought so much — just even beyond those books — layers to that character. I love her, and I have got to talk to Elizabeth.

Chris Pratt’ and Will Ferrell's 96% Rotten Tomatoes Comedy Is Leaving Streaming Very Soon
Image
Over a decade ago, Chris Pratt starred in the first The Lego Movie, the very one that began the iconic franchise inspired by the famous line of construction toys. Released in the U.S. in February 2014, the film was an instant favorite among critics, who gave it a fresh 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Ten years later, it landed on the popular streamer Netflix, precisely on June 1, 2024, after which it garnered even more attention from both old and new fans. Sadly, the film’s time on the platform is coming to an end very soon, with reports confirming only a few days left before its removal.

Amazon Prime Video's The Better Sisterhas officially unseated Uncharted from its spot on the streaming charts.

Created by Olivia Milch and based on the novel of the same name by Alafair Burke, The Better Sister stars Jesica Biel and Elizabeth Banks as Chloe Taylor and Nicky Macintosh, two estranged sisters with some particularly painful tensions between them. All James Gunn-Directed Movies (Including Superman), Ranked
Image
James Gunn is one of those filmmakers who can blend humour into everything, including the intense moments. And that’s what I love about him. His film career began as a screenwriter with “Tromeo and Juliet” in 1996, a transgressive romantic black comedy. Later, Gunn went on to pen scripts for “Scooby-Doo” (2002) and its 2004 sequel “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.” He also wrote Zack Snyder’s directorial debut film, “Dawn of the Dead” (2004). Gunn’s directorial journey in Hollywood began with his 2007 Sci-fi horror comedy film “Slither.” Currently serving as the co-ceo of DC along with Peter Saffran, James Gunn became a popular name, especially among the MCU fans, after entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) by directing the “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy, one of the best MCU films to date.

Few filmmakers in modern cinema can mix humour, heartfelt emotions, and deeply explore characters like James Gunn, and that too in a superhero movie.

10 fantasy book adaptations seemingly stuck in development hell
Image
One thing that Hollywood is known for is buying books and then letting the planned adaptations languish, especially when it comes to the fantasy genre. Fantasy stories are known for being epic and expensive to produce. While the initial idea of a chosen novel might sound great on paper, when it comes time to figure out the nitty-gritty financial details, many studios balk or shift focus.

For every big success, like Game of Thrones, there are dozens more projects left to rot in what we call "development hell." It doesn't mean that these stories will never appear onscreen, just that they are now in limbo, where it's unclear whether they will eventually come to fruition or disappear forever into the void. Ever since I watched the Apple TV+ series The Studio, I can't help but wonder if some of this is an intentional way for companies to block others from producing a potential mega-hit,...

James Gunn Responds to Hilarious Blunder: Outlet Mistakes Nathan Fillion for His Brother
Image
Superman director James Gunn couldn’t hold back his laughter after an online media outlet confused actor Nathan Fillion with his brother, Jeff Fillion, and used the wrong man’s face to celebrate the Superman star’s career.

An article by the Canadian site Info Petite Nation meant to honor actor Nathan Fillion accidentally featured a photo of his brother instead. The former took to Instagram on July 4th to turn the gaffe into gold:

Thank you, Info Petite Nation, for the lovely and flattering article on my career.

Gunn was among the first to respond with a hearty laughing emoji, quickly followed by industry peers like Michelle Monaghan, Elizabeth Banks, and The Rookie co-stars Jenna Dewan and Alyssa Diaz. A public slip-up might’ve embarrassed another team, but this crew turned it into a meme-worthy masterstroke.

9 Highest Grossing James Gunn Movies, Ranked
Image
James Gunn might just have one of the strangest and most fascinating careers in Hollywood, and we’re absolutely here for it. This is the guy who wrote Scooby-Doo, made a horror flick about alien slugs, turned a bunch of obscure Marvel misfits into A-list icons, and now he’s literally in charge of Superman. If that isn’t a cinematic rollercoaster, what is?

Whether it’s a talking raccoon with daddy issues or a gang of losers saving the galaxy to the sound of ’70s bangers, Gunn has a knack for turning the most unlikely characters into box office royalty.

Before becoming the puppeteer behind the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, he was scripting zombie chaos in Dawn of the Dead, giving us gross-out horror with Slither, and dropping one of the strangest superhero indies ever made with Super. And let’s not forget the Scooby-Doo era — nostalgia-core at its finest.
