En diversas localizaciones del Puerto de la Cruz, en Tenerife, ha comenzado el rodaje de “Islas”, la última película de la directora y guionista argentina Marina Seresesky. Una película que explora diversos temas como la soledad, la memoria y el miedo.
“Islas” transcurre en el majestuoso y esplendoroso Hotel Paradise, un enorme alojamiento que vivió un pasado glorioso y opulento… Ahora, decadente y anticuado, y del que ya solo queda el recuerdo… Mientras sus escasos empleados y clientes conviven envueltos por una apatía y desengaño profundos, el pasado y el futuro de sus dos protagonistas se funde en esa realidad alternativa que ofrece el todo incluido del Hotel Paradise.

Netflix Original “The Society of the Snow” won best picture and director for J.A. Bayona at Saturday night’s 38th Spanish Academy Goya Awards.
Those plaudits were two of a total 12 prizes, the third-highest kudos count for any title in the Goyas’ near 40-year history.
The lineup of best picture nominees was, however, a reminder in itself of the high quality and diversity of Spain’s current film production output. These took in Estibaliz’s Urresola Berlin triple winner “20,000 Species of Bees,” David Trueba’s real-life tender love story “Jokes & Cigarettes,” Isabel Coixet’s probing “Un Amor” and Victor Erice’s “Close Your Eyes,” an “aching ode to film, time and memory,” Variety wrote in its review.
Even after Bayona took best director there was still genuine suspense whether he would also win best picture, after best adapted screenplay went to “Robot Dreams” and “Jokes & Cigarettes” took best actor for David Verdaguer.

In what is expected to be a surefire hit, Buendia Estudios revealed an upcoming TV series adaptation of Antonio Gala’s erotic novel, “La Pasion Turca.” The popular novel was last adapted into a hit feature film in 1994 with the late Vicente Aranda directing and Andres Vicente Gomez of Lolafilms producing. It starred singer-actress Ana Belen in what is considered her most successful film.

Update, 9.45Am: The 2021 Goyas nominations announcement has been rescheduled for next Monday, January 18, at 11am local Spanish time. The initial plan was to announce today but the event, which will be held at the Spanish Academy’s HQ in Madrid, had to delay a week due to heavy snow in the country’s capital.
Actress Ana Belén and actor Dani Rovira will announce the nominees, accompanied by the president of the Academy, Mariano Barroso.

The director, just weeks away from starting shoot on a Jurassic World sequel, was visibly moved with the film’s performance, not only when he took to the stage to collect his Goya for best director, but also when his collaborators on the film did so for the film’s other eight wins of the night, including best cinematography, special effects, sound and production design.
With a box office of $28.6m (€26.5m), A Monster Calls was the biggest film in Spain last year.

The 2017 Berlin Film Festival has revealed its first slate of 14 films for the Competition and Berlinale Special sections, including new work from Aki Kaurismaki (“The Man Without a Past”), Oren Moverman (“Time Out of Mind”) and Sally Potter (“Ginger & Rosa”). The festival will also screen a restored version of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s 1972 TV series “Eight Hours Don’t Make a Day.”

After Sundance Film Festival concludes in late January, the next big cinematic event on the globe is the Berlin International Film Festival. With Paul Verhoeven serving as jury president for the 67th edition of the festival, they’ve now announced their first line-up of titles, including Aki Kaurismäki‘s The Other Side of Hope (pictured above), Oren Moverman‘s Richard Gere-led The Dinner, Sally Potter‘s The Party (pictured below), and Agnieszka Holland‘s Spoor, as well as a restoration of a Rainer Werner Fassbinder TV show.
