The next James Bond film has found its writer. Variety reports that Steven Knight, the man behind Peaky Blinders, will pen the script for the upcoming 007 adventure. The movie will be directed by Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve and produced by Amy Pascal and David Heyman for Amazon MGM Studios.
Knight is best known for creating the hit Birmingham gangster drama, but he’s also written films like Dirty Pretty Things, Eastern Promises, and Locke. His latest produced screenplay was Maria, the biopic about opera singer Maria Callas starring Angelina Jolie and directed by Pablo Larraín.
This will be the first Bond movie made under Amazon MGM’s full creative control after the company struck a deal with long-time Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. A release date hasn’t been confirmed yet, but the film isn’t expected until 2028.
The big question still hanging over the project is who will play 007.

Despite her issues with Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie fondly remembers their film together and ranks it as one of her favorite movies. Jolie and Pitt shared impeccable chemistry when they were paired together in the 2005 film Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The chemistry eventually transitioned into a full-blown romance.
This relationship, however, caused a prominent scandal after Angelina Jolie was accused of causing Pitt and Jennifer Aniston to split. The former couple played a married couple who are secretly assassins belonging to competing agencies. Things go wrong between them when they are assigned to kill each other.
According to RadarOnline, Jolie not only had the film as one of her favorites but also spoke about how it brought her together with Pitt in real life. She shared that starting a proper relationship with Pitt came as a surprise to her, as she believed that she would always be a single mom.

The New York Times is revamping its lineup of arts and entertainment critics — replacing four of the paper’s TV, music and theater critics, who are being offered “new roles,” according to an internal memo obtained by Variety.
The quartet of Times critics — television critic Margaret Lyons, music critic Jon Pareles, theater critic Jesse Green and classical music critic Zach Woolfe — will “be taking on new roles, and we will be conducting a search for critics on their beats in the weeks to come,” New York Times culture editor Sia Michel wrote in a memo to staffers on Tuesday afternoon.
“We are in the midst of an extraordinary moment in American culture. New generations of artists and audiences are bypassing traditional institutions, smartphones have Balkanized fandoms even as they have made culture more widely accessible than ever, and arts institutions are facing challenges and looking for new opportunities,” Michel wrote.

“Tell me how it felt to be onstage,” the journalist played by Kodi Smit-McPhee says to Maria Callas in the new trailer for Maria. “An exultation,” she responds. “An intoxication. I thought the stage itself would burn.” Starring Angelina Jolie, Pablo Larraín’s Maria is a swooning portrait of that cocktail of emotion.
Jolie has already earned a Golden Globe nomination for her stunning performance as Maria Callas. Previously, she won an Academy Award for her performance in Girl, Interrupted and has displayed her incredible range in films including Changeling, The Good Shepherd, Maleficent, and Those Who Wish Me Dead.
Renowned Chilean filmmaker Larraín is known for such films as Jackie, Spencer, No, Neruda, and 2023’s El Conde, which garnered a Best Cinematography Oscar nomination for Edward Lachman’s chiaroscuro work.

One of the most famous women in the world, Angelina Jolie, started acting right out of high school. Despite her outward appearance, she has described herself as an awkward outsider at Beverly Hills High School, where she was teased because by her rich classmates. She lived with her mother in an apartment, and the family existed only on child support from her father actor Jon Voight, who had financial problems of his own. She later transferred to a different school and found her identity as what she describes as “a punk chick with tattoos.”
She began her career in a series of forgettable films (“Cyborg 2” anyone?) but then suddenly grabbed attention in the TV mini-series “George Wallace.” The series depicted the life of the title character, who was a controversial governor of Alabama and a presidential candidate. Jolie received very positive reviews as his second wife, Cornelia. Later that same...

Angelina Jolie As Maria Callas In Biopic(Photo Credit –Facebook)
Angelina Jolie is back with a role that veers away from her action-packed filmography — this time as Maria Callas, one of the most revered opera singers of the 20th century. Maria, a biographical drama set against the melancholic elegance of 1970s Paris, premieres exclusively on Lionsgate Play in India on May 9.
Directed by Pablo Larraín, the film traces the turbulent final years of Callas’ life, offering glimpses into her private struggles and the intense pressures that came with global fame. Known as La Divina, Callas was celebrated and scrutinized — a woman whose voice and persona captivated audiences but whose personal battles often stayed behind the curtain.
In this rare comeback role, Jolie embodies Callas with a restraint that speaks volumes. The film avoids showy melodrama, instead painting a quieter, more intimate portrait of the soprano shaped by loneliness, failing health,...

Angelina Jolie 50th Birthday ( Photo Credit – Facebook )
Angelina Jolie’s 50th birthday on June 4 isn’t shaping up to be a celebration, at least not in her eyes. The Hollywood icon, instead of embracing the milestone, is reportedly dreading it, weighed down by stress, isolation, and lingering bitterness from her ongoing legal battles with ex-husband Brad Pitt.
Trapped in Los Angeles Against Angelina Jolie’s Will
Despite her desire to leave Los Angeles behind, Jolie is tethered to the city until her youngest children reach adulthood, a situation she blames squarely on Pitt. Their long-running custody fight has left her seething, convinced that her former husband is deliberately keeping her stuck as a form of payback.
Sources close to the star reveal she’s even compiling a tongue-in-cheek list of “50 reasons to hate her birthday,” which serves as a reflection of her growing frustration.

It was all just lights, camera, and heartbreak for Angelina Jolie, as the actress faced a brutal Hollywood reality check—and trust us, it stings. Despite Netflix pouring millions into her Oscar campaign for Maria, the golden statue slipped right through her fingers. Meanwhile, Demi Moore swooped in and grabbed her first-ever Oscar nod for The Substance.

Editor’s Note: On Februrary 27 this article was updated to reflect changes in our predictions for the Best Sound and Best Production Design categories.
When it comes to the “technical” categories, we all know what the Academy voters like: large-scale world-building, showy “look at me” uses of craft, period detail, and, ideally, especially for certain categories (like Best Editing and Cinematography), it helps to be the Best Picture front-runner. But those aren’t always the ingredients that make for the best filmmaking and visual and aural storytelling.
With final Oscar voting having wrapped, the IndieWire craft team looks at eight categories to see who is most likely to win and who we would pick if we had a vote. A few notes before we jump in.
The “Will Win” sections below are based on the latest predictions by IndieWire’s Bill Desowitz, the best craft and animation awards analyst in the business.

IndieWire invited the cinematographers from the Oscar-nominated films to choose and analyze a pivotal scene that best showcases their craft. Here are the four who were able to participate: Lol Crawley (“The Brutalist”), Greig Fraser (“Dune: Part Two”), Paul Guilhaume (“Emilia Pérez”), and Ed Lachman (“Maria”).
For Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” Crawley resurrected VistaVision, the higher resolution, wide-screen variant of 35mm popularized in the ’50s (“Vertigo”). The strategy worked visually and thematically for a maximalist approach to this post-war immigrant drama about Holocaust survivor and visionary architect László Tóth (Best Actor nominee Adrien Brody). It brilliantly showed off the Brutalist style of Tóth’s work as an expression of his post-war trauma, with its massive blocks of concrete and steel. Additionally, the format provided a wider field of view of the compositions.

His surprise win beat out Academy Award favorites “Dune: Part Two” (Greig Fraser) and “The Brutalist” (Lol Crawley), as well as “Nosferatu” (Jarin Blaschke), “Conclave” (Stéphane Fontaine), “A Complete Unknown” (Phedon Papamichael), and “Wicked” (Alice Brooks). The expanded list was due to how close the percentage of voting was.
This marks Lachman’s first win after five nominations at the ASC Awards. He was previously nominated for his work with Todd Haynes on “Mildred Pierce,” “Far From Heaven,” and “Carol,” as well as his previous effort with Pablo Larraín, “El Conde.” His second project with the Chilean filmmaker, “Maria,” follows the last days of opera singer Maria Callas as she reflects on her life and the struggle of maintaining her own voice. It serves as a culmination of Larraín’s “Important Women” Trilogy,...

Lachman will vie for the prize against Lol Crawley (The Brutalist), Greig Fraser (Dune: Part Two) Paul Guilhaume (Emilia Pérez) and Jarin Blaschke (Nosferatu). All five also were up for the ASC Award tonight.

With the release of Maria in 2024, Chilean director Pablo Larraíncompleted his unofficial trilogy of biopics about famous, high-status women who, despite their luxurious lifestyles, experience unshakable melancholy. Before Maria, following esteemed opera singer Maria Callas, and Spencer, about Princess Diana Spencer's Gilded Cage in the Royal Family, Larraín's first historical protagonist, Jacqueline Kennedy, witnessed unimaginable levels of trauma that historical records could hardly account for. Jackie, Larraín's biopic starring Natalie Portmanas the First Lady in the wake of President John F. Kennedy's assassination, pivots away from the historical and political machinations of this monumental event to fixate on the inescapable horror of sitting within inches of your loved one's death and the challenges of moving on with your life. For Jackie Kennedy, with the whole world watching you and scrutinizing your legacy, the healing process becomes nearly unfeasible.

It’s ironic that a quarter of the way into the 21st century, when studios have seemingly accepted home streaming as their primary means of movie distribution, Dp Lol Crawley has earned an Oscar nomination for “The Brutalist,” shot on VistaVision, a widescreen film process developed by Paramount Pictures in 1954 to help lure viewers away from their living room TVs and into the theaters.
Used for such films as John Ford’s “The Searchers,” Cecil B. DeMille’s “The Ten Commandments” and Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo,” VistaVision was designed as a competitor to 20th Century Fox’s Cinema- Scope, which employed an anamorphic lens to compress a widescreen image on to standard 35mm film stock.
“As opposed to pulling the film down vertically in a motion picture camera, it’s actually pulling it horizontally across eight perforations at a time,” explains Crawley. “So you end up with a bigger format,...

Of all the surprises that came out of the 2025 Academy Awards nominations, Angelina Jolie’s snub for Maria was certainly one of the most dizzying. While she was previously considered seriously in contention for an Oscar—having already received a Best Actress Golden Globe nod for her performance—Jolie failed to receive recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences alongside Best Actress nominees Cynthia Erivo, Mikey Madison, Demi Moore, Fernanda Torres, and Karla Sofía Gascón. Even Maria, a biopic centered on the final days of legendary opera singer Maria Callas (Jolie), itself did not escape the Academy's indifference unscathed, only scoring a nod for Best Cinematography despite largely positive reviews from both critics and audiences alike.

If Angelina Jolie’s portrayal of Maria Callas in Maria made you cry, just wait til you get your hands on the most heartbreaking performance of her career. One of the most compelling and tragic biopics of its era, HBO’s 1998 made-for-tv film Gia chronicles the meteoric rise and fall of America’s first supermodel. Jolie gives an electric, career-defining performance as the titular Gia Marie Carangi, portraying the haunted supermodel with brutal honesty.

Ask Ed Lachman about the use of color and the cinematographer provides a perfect layman’s primer in art education.
“Why are hospitals blue and green? Those are restful, peaceful colors. Why are fast food restaurants red and orange? Because those activate our passion and our appetite,” Lachman said in his laid-back, easygoing voice. “Theoreticians on painting, like Goethe in his book in 1810 or Josef Albers in the 1960s, have talked a lot about how color affects the viewer. It’s all very primitive and emotional and I love to play around with that.”
Lachman, for sure, plays with color, as well as four different film formats, in Pablo Larraín’ “Maria,” which depicts the final days of opera star Maria Callas (Angelina Jolie). The work has earned Lachman his fourth Oscar nomination, following nods for “Far From Heaven,” “Carol” and “El Conde.”

Actress Angelina Jolie faces professional disappointment after her highly anticipated Netflix biographical film Maria was overlooked in the 2025 Academy Award nominations. This marks a significant moment in Jolie’s career, as the film represented her first serious dramatic role in nearly two decades.
The biographical drama, directed by Pablo Larraín, portrays legendary opera singer Maria Callas. Jolie dedicated substantial effort to the role, learning operatic singing techniques and promoting the film more actively than she has in recent years.
Industry sources close to Jolie described her reaction as deeply emotional. “She is absolutely devastated by the snub,” said one insider, highlighting the personal investment the actress made in the project.
Jolie’s Oscar history includes a Best Supporting Actress win for Girl, Interrupted in 2000 and a Best Actress nomination for Changeling in 2008. However, her recent career has focused more on action and fantasy films, which rarely receive serious awards consideration.

Despite dating Brad Pitt during the late 90s, Angelina Jolie wasn’t on board with having his kids. Well, that’s shocking—because women around the world were dying to have Pitt’s babies, with that blonde hair, blue-eyed features. So what was Jolie’s reason for avoiding the topic of having a biological child, especially since she was already a mother to two adopted children?

Well, apparently, that was the reason. Since Angelina Jolie already had two adopted kids and wasn’t sure how Brad Pitt might start treating them once they had a biological child, the actress refused to conceive their own. Talk about drama waiting to happen, right? But then, something unexpected happened that totally flipped the script, and now Jolie has three biological kids with Pitt. Guess what the game-changer was?...

Of the infinite adjectives available to describe Ed Lachman’s cinematography on Pablo Larraín’s Maria, it is not a surprise that, in writing about the film, critics have often used the word “sumptuous.” Really, what choice did they have? Lachman knows how to blend the dream world and the real one like no other cinematographer. In Maria, he captures the last days of the legendary opera singer Maria Callas, as played by Angelina Jolie, in a haze of greens and oranges, as she attempts a comeback. You don’t watch the film so much as you swim in it.
For much of the movie, Jolie bounces between present day and moments throughout her life that are filmed in black and white and Super 8 format. In preparing to shoot, Lachman referenced photos of Callas by greats like Irving Penn, Cecil Beaton, and Richard Avedon. He doesn’t re-create those moments,...

The Academy unveiled its full line-up of Oscar nods Thursday morning, with “Emilia Pérez” leading the field with 13 nominations, followed by “The Brutalist” and “Wicked” with 10 each. While guild nominations and other preliminary awards bodies can help provide a comprehensive forecast for Oscar nominations, there are always a few curveballs mixed into the proceedings. Big names like Angelina Jolie and Denzel Washington missed out on acting nominations this year — and there were many, many more surprises.
Snub: Angelina Jolie Misses for ‘Maria’
The star earned some of the best reviews of her career out of the Venice Film Festival for her portrayal of the opera icon Maria Callas. Director Pablo Larrain previously delivered Oscar nominations to two of his stars playing historical figures — Natalie Portman for “Jackie” in 2017 and Kristen Stewart for “Spencer” in 2022. But Jolie didn’t land a nod, falling behind in a highly competitive best actress field.

Exclusive: Following news that the 3x Golden Globe-winning movie The Brutalist used AI in post to smooth the Hungarian accents of its stars Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones as well as that of its cast, the pic’s director Brady Corbet has issued a response.
“Adrien and Felicity’s performances are completely their own. They worked for months with dialect coach Tanera Marshall to perfect their accents. Innovative Respeecher technology was used in Hungarian language dialogue editing only, specifically to refine certain vowels and letters for accuracy. No English language was changed. This was a manual process, done by our sound team and Respeecher in post-production. The aim was to preserve the authenticity of Adrien and Felicity’s performances in another language, not to replace or alter them and done with the utmost respect for the craft.”

Pablo Larraín, who is known for his intimate, character-driven biopics like Jackie and Spencer—which follow international icons Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Diana, Princess of Wales, respectively—continues his exploration of complex, larger-than-life women with 2024’s Maria. A portrayal of the final days of Maria Callas, possibly the most iconic opera singer of the 20th century, Maria stars Angelina Jolie as the titular chanteuse, a role that has been considered one of Jolie's best performances. But, given the criticism levied at the artistic interpretation in his previous biopics, it’s important to ask: how much of Maria is rooted in truth, and how much is Larraín’s interpretation?...

Few Hollywood starlets have had the kind of career that Angelina Jolie has had over the years in the business. She has most recently made waves with her performance as the opera singer Maria Callas in the newest Pablo Larraín trilogy film. However, long before spearheading the cast of Maria, Jolie's career was quite fruitful. Jolie, who began acting as a child in 1982, has grown tremendously as an artist, taking on roles in a variety of successful and challenging films.
Jolie has cemented herself as one of the most versatile actors of her generation, from performances like the trouble-making sociopath Lisa in Girl, Interrupted, to the classic evil sorceress in Disney's Maleficent, the latter leading up to a possible Maleficent 3. Though Jolie has occasionally taken breaks from acting to pursue humanitarian work and directing, her career has hardly slowed down, and it's clear why. Actors like Jolie are hard to come by,...

You can’t tell the story of a diva’s life without the right gowns — wardrobe and jewels are essential to our idea of the prima donna, one of many tools these formidable women use to transmit mythos and majesty. The songbird’s soul is what matters most; it’s her interiority that creates the magic, including the grit and beauty that pour out from the lungs and onto the stage. But the armor counts, too. And in filmmaker Pablo Larraín’s Maria, about the life of opera soprano Maria Callas, the clothing tells the tale of a complicated woman navigating the winding turns of a dramatic existence. “I re-created her entire wardrobe with extreme passion, trying to put myself in the shoes of the [icon],” says Massimo Cantini Parrini, the film’s Oscar-nominated costume designer. “Clothing is a status symbol, a nonverbal means of communication. I wanted Maria to appear true.
