Cult Classic Slasher Movie Loses Streaming Home After Legacy Sequel Underwhelms in Theaters
Image
As its sequel scares up decent but underwhelming box office returns, I Know What You Did Last Summerwon't be online for the whole summer. The cult classic slasher movie is set to leave Netflix imminently.

Per Collider, I Know What You Did Last Summer will leave Netflix on Aug. 1, becoming one of several feature-length titles to depart from the streaming giant that day. The film hit Netflix on New Year's Day (Jan. 1) and found success on the streamer, including when the sequel hit theaters earlier this month.

Starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe, I Know What You Did Last Summer was penned by Scream creator Kevin Williamson and helmed by eventual Venom director Jim Gillespie. The film kicked off a longstanding franchise based on Lois Duncan's titular 1973 novel.

Jennifer Love Hewitt’s return to I Know What You Did Last Summer sparked by ‘love’ of franchise
Jennifer Love Hewitt’s return to I Know What You Did Last Summer came down to a deep “love” of the horror franchise. The 45-year-old actress is reprising her role as Julie James nearly 30 years after first appearing in the iconic teen slasher, and has now credited the new film’s creative team with bringing the franchise back with a lot of heart. She told Variety of director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and co-writer Sam Lansky: “What was very apparent from the word ‘Go’ is how much both of them loved the original movie.“I feel like, if you’re going to go back and make something new but pay homage to an original, you have to love it. You have to understand it. “So, I was just blown away and it meant a lot to me.”The new instalment, set for release in 2025, follows a fresh group of teenagers in Southport,...

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Surprise Cameo Was a "Surreal" Moment for Actor, 48
Image
Well I Know What You Did Last Summer fans, she got us. And, while we’d usually be upset to have been gotten during the movie’s premiere weekend, we have nothing but the utmost gratitude and respect for director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who managed to keep the most hoped-for cameo under wraps. After literal months of telling journalists that Sarah Michelle Gellar would not be coming back from the dead to reprise her role as Helen Shivers from the original 1997 movie of the same name, the helmer and co-writer not only found a way to do it, but perfectly fit it into the storyline. The beloved Croaker Queen rose from the dead in a fully tasteful way during a dream sequence during which Madelyn Cline’s Danica Richards found herself communing with her fellow beauty queen and learning a thing or two about outrunning the past.

During a chat with Variety,...

How ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Deconstructs Cinema’s Love/Hate Relationship With Legacy Sequel Nostalgia
Image
“Nostalgia is overrated.”

Warning: This feature has Heavy Spoilers for 2025’s I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Pop culture has reached a dangerous inflection point where everything old is new again. It’s no longer enough to franchise out IP and reboot beloved classics, but the past decade has been rich in legacy sequels that are largely dependent on the power of nostalgia. There are so many hollow legacy sequels that coast on inauthentic sentimentality that cinema has reached a point where these franchise extensions feel inevitable, rather than exciting. Legacy horror sequels like Exorcist: Believer, Halloween Ends, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) hit diminishing returns. A project like a new I Know What You Did Last Summer almost seems set up to fail by this metric, yet Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s movie becomes a powerful commentary on the benefits and dangers of nostalgia. A narrative tug-of-war takes over the...

I Know What You Did Last Summer's Major Mid-Credits Cameo & Sequel Potential Explained By Director
Image
I Know What You Did Last Summer's director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson discussed the major cameo in the mid-credits scene and explained how it could potentially set up a sequel. While Jennifer Love Hewitt's Julie and Freddie Prinze Jr.'s Ray were the main characters from the original movies to return in the legacy sequel, Brandy Norwood also appears as Karla in the mid-credits scene.

Even though reviews for I Know What You Did Last Summer have been quite disappointing, many fans were delighted to see Karla appear at the end of the film. Brandy previously played Julie's roommate and best friend in the sequel to the original film, 1998's I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

In an interview with Screen Rant's own Ash Crossan, Robinson talked about how excited she was to include Karla in I Know What You Did Last Summer and explained the dynamic...

Image
The following contains major spoilers for I Know What You Did Last Summer, in theaters now.

I Know What You Did Last Summerstar Madelyn Cline explains the new movie's last minute changes.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cline opened up about the fact that test audiences were overtly upset by the death of her character, Danica, in the newly-released I Know What You Did Last Summer threequel. According to Cline, she "only got the news that I was coming back about two-and-a-half weeks ago," leading to a round of reshoots in which it is shown that Danica did indeed survive her ordeal with the latest murderous Fisherman.

Directed by Robinson from a screenplay co-written with Sam Lansky, I Know What You Did Last Summeris a sequel to 1998's I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and 1997's I Know What You Did Last Summer, completely ignoring 2006's much-maligned supernaturally-charged direct-to-video threequel,...

David Corenswet in SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY IS POWERFUL!! MOVIE REVIEW! (2024)
Update July 20, 2025: Superman is still flying high at the box office.

DC Studios and Warner Bros.' James Gunn-led reboot soared to another box-office victory over the July 18-20 weekend, earning $57.3 million domestically — marking a 54 percent drop from its opening weekend. Universal's Jurassic World Rebirth roared into second place with $23.4 million in its third week, while new releases from Sony's I Know What You Did Last Summer ($13 million) and Paramount's Smurfs ($11 million) struggled with underwhelming openings. Warner Bros.' F1: The Movie rounded out the top five with $9.6 million.

Superman is just the latest success story for Warner Bros. this year — the studio's sixth number-one movie following Mickey 17, A Minecraft Movie, Sinners, Final Destination: Bloodlines, and F1. Warner Bros. currently ranks as the top studio of 2025, with $1.32 billion in domestic receipts. However, that position may shift as Disney's highly anticipated Fantastic Four: First Steps is...

Jennifer Love Hewitt Teases Brandy's Cameo in 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Post-Credits Scene

Love Hewitt is being joined in the movie by her original costar Freddie Prinze Jr, as well as a whole new cast of characters. ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ After-Credits Scene Keeps 10% Rated Sequel Alive
Image
I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) pays tribute to the original’s long-forgotten sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which has a miniscule 10% score on the Tomatometer. Even though the 1998 sequel failed to spawn a long-running franchise like the Scream IP after the success of the original, the legacy sequel hasn’t ignored it.

Instead, the mid-credits scene leans heavily toward the sequel by incorporating Brandy Norwood’s Karla Wilson and celebrates her reunion with Jennifer Love Hewitt’s final girl, Julie.

I Know What You Did Last Summer Honors Its Overlooked Sequel in the Mid-Credits Scene

While the original movie, alongside Scream, was instrumental to the revival of slashers in the ’90s, the lukewarm reception to I Still Know What You Did Last Summer derailed any hopes of a prolonged series. But after a critically panned direct-to-video release in 2006 and an Amazon reboot series that lasted only one season,...

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ features shocking cameos by 2 award winners (spoilers!)
Image
Warning: This post contains major spoilers for the new I Know What You Did Last Summer revival.

Guess we know what these two award winners — and I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise veterans — did last summer. Sony never tried to hide the fact that Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. would be returning for the just-released 2025 revival as Julie James and Ray Bronson, who barely survived their own close encounter of the slasher kind with the hook-wielding Fisherman killer in the original 1997 film.

But this latest Last Summer features a pair of shocking cameos by two other key players from the first movie and its 1998 sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Daytime Emmy winner Sarah Michelle Gellar and Grammy winner Brandy Norwood both return for the new film — which takes place 25 years after the events of the original — and their surprise appearances inspired loud...

I Know What You Did Last Summer's Mid-Credits Scene Pays Perfect Homage To A Terrible Movie
Image
This article contains spoilers for 2025's "I Know What You Did Last Summer."

When "I Know What You Did Last Summer" debuted in 1997, it was met with a mixed reception by critics, but brought in a Billy Blue-sized boatload of cash at the box office. A $17 million shooting budget nabbed $125.3 million before enjoying a sizable chunk of change thanks to the still-booming home video rental market. A sequel was inevitable, and just over a year later, "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" hit theaters. Although boasting a 10% on Rotten Tomatoes isn't something to write home about, it was still a financial success.

Unfortunately, the sequel's less-than-stellar reception didn't help launch the series into a formidable franchise. The direct-to-video sequel "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" arrived nearly a decade after the party was over, and the Prime Video series adaptation from 2021 was canceled after just one season.

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Trailer Hooks Into the Continuation of the Beloved Franchise
Image
We are but one month away from the arrival of Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s I Know What You Did Last Summer and the hook-handed gods have shined down mercifully upon us with a fresh trailer. The only other official teaser came out months ago, in April, so we’re beyond grateful to witness more of the undoubtable greatness that will come when the film slashes into cinemas on July 18. Featuring the return of the franchise's final couple — Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Julie James and Freddie Prinze Jr.’s Ray Bronson — the trailer sees the past and present collide on a brutally graphic scale.

The new film appears to be leaning more into a Scream-like whodunnit than the two (kind of three) titles that came before it decades ago. In the original movie, filmmaker Jim Gillespie and writer, Kevin Williamson, took audiences on a deranged journey featuring some of the hottest young names of the time.

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Will Reveal How Its Returning Stars Survived the First Two Movies
Image
Over two films, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.solidified their status as horror royalty nearly 30 years ago when I Know What You Did Last Summer and its sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, had audiences hooked until the very last second. This summer, we will all knowwhat they did last summer, as the pair will reprise their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson, respectively, in Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s highly-anticipated legacy sequel, aptly titled I Know What You Did Last Summer. But one question lingers from the original set of films — didn’t Julie and Ray die? At the end of the 1998 sequel, after they seemingly vanquished their foe, the final seconds see Julie being pulled under the bed, while Ray — completely unaware of the terror at play in the bedroom — is brushing his teeth and appears to be the next in line to die.

Freddie Prinze Jr. Is a Silver Fox in New ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Reboot Image
Image
The maniacal fisherman may be out for blood in Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, but Freddie Prinze Jr. is out here to slay. Included in the lineup of first-look images for this summer at the cinema, USA Today snatched a new look at the actor’s return to the slasher franchise, which sees him reprise a role from nearly three decades ago. And — spoiler alert — he’s just as much of a babe as ever, quite like his co-star, Jennifer Love Hewitt, who will also go face-to-face with the brutal killer once again in Robinson’s upcoming flick.

The image in question features Prinze Jr.’s Ray Bronson, standing alongside newcomers Chase Sui Wonders (Bodies Bodies Bodies), Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks), and Sarah Pidgeon (The Wilds), each of whom find themselves in deep, dark, and (to them) uncharted waters in the legacy sequel. The...

Image
Although Jennifer Kaytin Robinson‘s I Know What You Did Last Summer brings back some familiar faces, don’t expect to see any reigning Croaker Queens.

The writer-director of the sequel, which premieres July 18 in theaters, recently admitted that she “tried relentlessly” to get her pal Sarah Michelle Gellar to reprise her role as the doomed Helen Shivers from the 1997 slasher pic, but “she’s dead.”

'I Tried Relentlessly:' I Know What You Did Last Summer Director Did Her Best For Sarah Michelle Gellar To Return
Image
The I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel brings back some fan-favorite characters from the original movie. WHile Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. will repirse their roles from the 1997 film, Sarah Michelle Gellar turned down a potential appearance.

But since Gellar's character, Helen Shivers, had died, the actor decided against it. "I tried, okay? I harassed her! But she is dead," Robinson explained. "I tried to pitch some crazy s**t too. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has a message for fans who want to know if Brandy Norwood will appear in the upcomingI Know What You Did Last Summer sequel: “You’ll have to go see the movie.” Recently speaking with People, the Do Revenge helmer was reluctant to share too much about the possibility of the pop superstar reprising her role as Karla Wilson from the 1998 film I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. The actress has previously made comments surrounding her hopeful return to the slasher epic, and Robinson has been clear from the jump that her movie will honor the original and its 1998 follow-up as canon.

Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Tyriq Withers, Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, and Sarah Pidgeon in Souviens-toi... l'été dernier (2025)
The upcoming installment of I Know What You Did Last Summer brings back Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., with questions still surrounding the possible return of Brandy Norwood.

Norwood played Karla Wilson in the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, portraying a close friend of Julie James, played by Hewitt. Karla was among the characters who survived the events of that film.

Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson responded to questions about Norwood’s potential appearance by saying, “You’ll have to go see the movie.” Norwood, while promoting her film The Front Room, acknowledged she had been contacted but did not confirm her involvement. “I heard some things about it,” she said. “So, hopefully.” When asked how Karla might return, Norwood added, “I don’t know how she would come back. I haven’t thought about that yet but I know that she should come back.

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Director On Brandy Norwood’s Return: “You’ll Have To Go See The Movie”
Image
Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are returning for the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel, but Brandy Norwood’s future wasn’t clear.

Norwood played Hewitt’s bestie in the sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, and her reprisal was uncertain.

In a new interview, director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson teased that Norwood might be returning to the slasher franchise.

When asked about Norwood’s return, Robinson told People, “You’ll have to go see the movie.”

Norwood played Karla Wilson in the 1998 sequel. Karla was Julia’s (Hewitt) college bestie who survived the events of the follow-up movie.

“I heard some things about,” Norwood told Entertainment Tonight. “So, hopefully.”

Brandy's A24 Thriller 'The Front Room' Finds Streaming Success on Max
Image
After failing to meet box office expectations, Max and Sam Eggers' directorial debut, The Front Room, has become a streaming success. When the psychological horror thriller landed in theaters in September, it was projected to gross $5 million but fell a bit flat, bringing in barely its supposed budget, $3.2 million; it also became A24's lowest-rated movie of 2024 on Rotten Tomatoes. The critically divisive film (which currently holds a 42% rating on the review site) now sits at the number two spot in Max's most streamed movies, topped only by Clint Eastwood's Juror #2.

Based on the 2016 short story of the same name by Susan Hill, The Front Room stars Brandy Norwood as Belinda, a pregnant woman whose life is thrown into disarray when her aging mother-in-law, Solange (Kathryn Hunter), moves in with Belinda and her husband. Solange's arrival creates tension; her eccentric behavior and weird demands push Belinda beyond her limits.

What to watch this weekend Jan. 3, 2025: Movie awards contenders
Image
This week’s top pick, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, is likely to earn a Best Animated Feature nomination at the Oscars. But it likely won’t join its predecessor, 2005’s Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit, in actually winning the award.

Pioneering “claymation” studio Aardman’s second Wallace & Gromit feature finds the innocent inventor and his more skeptical dog re-encountering the dastardly penguin thief Feathers McGraw, whose jewel heist they thwarted back in the 1993 short The Wrong Trousers. Imprisoned in a zoo ever since Wallace and Gromit stopped him, McGraw has come back for revenge. It’s a sequel 30 years in the making, and the whole family will love it. It’s now streaming on Netflix.

Here are some other movies to stream this weekend:

Wicked: There are technically higher-tier contenders now available to watch at home than Wallace & Gromit, but they’re only available on VOD,...

The Front Room Review: Kathryn Hunter's Delightfully Unhinged Genius Is Overshadowed By Horror's Weakest Elements
Image
A24 has become largely known for their work in the indie horror sphere, with everything from the psychological chiller Hereditary to the more directly supernatural Talk to Me. The studio has also made a reputation for frequently collaborating with certain filmmakers, including Robert Eggers on his first two projects, The Witch and The Lighthouse. Now, the studio has sought to expand that to Eggers' filmmaking siblings, Max and Sam Eggers, with the absurdist psychological horror The Front Room, which unfortunately doesn't make the same impact.

The Front Room is a psychological horror film directed by the Eggers Brothers. Set in a single location, it revolves around a young, pregnant woman caring for her ailing grandmother, whose secrets and dementia create a tense and eerie atmosphere. The film stars Brandy Norwood and Kathryn Hunter, and explores themes of family, memory, and the supernatural.

What Were The Worst Horror Movies of 2024?
Image
As good as 2024 has been for horror, there’s always a ying to any yang, and the other side of the coin was pretty rough. While we saw some major bombs in the way of The Crow and disappointing box office performances via Cuckoo, We’re talking about the truly bad. And wouldn’t you know it, this year most of them have been produced by one company. Blumhouse. I’m not sure why it is that they’ve seemingly become completely creatively bankrupt but I’ve experienced it in the theaters. The moment that Blumhouse logo comes up and an entire audience collectively sighs. And it wasn’t that way just a few years ago. But after killer Teddy Bears, an AI killer house, and a haunted Swimming Pool, they’ve definitely lost the plot. This may as well be called the “What the Hell Happened To Blumhouse” video,...

Even though you might be able to pick your partner, you certainly can't pick your partner’s family. Opinions and personalities sometimes just don’t click, and you might find yourself in a nightmare situation. Playing into this vibe that so many people know a little bit too well, Max and Sam Eggers co-penned the script for The Front Room, a project that would also serve as the pair’s feature-length directorial debut. Bringing in an absolute icon to play their leading lady, the pair cast singer and actress Brandy Norwood as a woman shouldering the wrath of her disapproving mother-in-law (Kathryn Hunter).
