Drake headlined the three-day Wireless Festival at Finsbury Park in London over the weekend and it was a star-studded, surprise guest-filled affair. Lauryn Hill, 21 Savage, Rema, Vanessa Carlton, and more joined the rapper throughout the weekend.
On Friday, Drake set the theme for the night. “This is the first time in my life that I’ve done three different shows on three different days,” Drake told the crowd, per Billboard. “You came to a very special night. It’s night one. It’s a celebration of all things R&b.

Lauryn Hill was one of six artists Drake tapped to share the stage with him on the first of his three nights headlining London’s Wireless Festival this weekend.
The Ovo rapper set an R&b theme for night one of the concert series, which saw him pass the mic to singers such as Mario, Bobby Valentino, Bryson Tiller, and Giveon to churn out their crowd-pleasing singles. Label signee Partynextdoor also got in on the action, with the duo performing a range of tracks from “Come and See Me” to “Moth Balls,” “Somebody Love You” and “Spider-Man Superman” together.
The surprise highlight of the night was Drake bringing out Lauryn Hill, whose performance of “Ex-Factor” transitioned into Drake rapping his 2018 hit single “Nice For What,” which samples the single from Hill’s 1998 Grammy Award-winning album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, for his finale.

Lauryn Hill wants to set the record straight on her history of tardiness. The musician’s most recent late start was at Essence Festival, where she took the stage to a significantly sparse crowd at 2:30 a.m. The festival organizers acknowledged that she arrived on time, and the delays were due to their own production issues. In a lengthy statement on Instagram, Hill commended Essence Fest for taking accountability instead of letting her take the fall — something she doesn’t plan on allowing to happen again.

Ms. Lauryn Hill has broken her silence on her latest delayed performance with a lengthy social media statement thanking Essence Festival organizers for taking responsibility. In her note, the singer and rapper also clarified “misconceptions” about her approach to live productions and referenced “years of public effort to defame me.”
Last week, Hill took the stage during the first night of the 2025 Essence Festival of Culture nearly two hours behind schedule, performing around 2:30 a.m. on July 5th to an “essentially empty” Caesars Superdome, according to Nola.com. On Monday, July 7th, Essence Fest released a statement accepting responsibility for the delay.
Now, Hill has thanked the festival’s organizers for “clarifying that the delays were not my fault,” and detailed her hands-on approach to live performances. “Family, let me address a few things: I am involved in every aspect of what it takes to put on my shows, because...

After Lauryn Hill closed out the opening night of Essence Festival in the wee hours of Saturday morning, festival organizers shouldered blame for the delay.
On Sunday, Essence shared a statement in defense of the 8x Grammy winner, accepting responsibility after she reportedly finished performing her set at almost 4am for a nearly empty Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
“Family is family and around here we protect our own no matter what the People have to say,” they captioned a video of her performance. “Let’s be very clear— We don’t play about Ms. Lauryn Hill. Not for clicks. Not for headlines.”
The statement continued, “She arrived on schedule, stepped on that stage, and delivered the kind of performance only a legend can. The delay? Not hers. We will take that. The moment? One for the books. The legacy? Still unmatched. Put some respect on her name. Keep the takes,...

Lauryn Hill finished her set at the Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans at 3:37 a.m. after taking the stage significantly later than expected.
The festival, which was stuffed with performers in the lineup, ran behind schedule, leading to Hill not taking the stage at the Caesars Superdome until 2:30 a.m. local time. Her performance, which was supposed to be for July 4, didn’t start until well into July 5.
Only several hundred people were in the crowd, that is made to fit 83,000. Hill was bantering with the crowd and taking requests for songs.
Hill also performed songs with her two sons, Zion Marley and Joshua Marley.
Hill has been known for late performances in the past; however, it appears this time, the late performance is entirely the fault of the event organizers.

Essence Festival organizers have taken responsibility for a concert that ran so far behind schedule that Lauryn Hill wound up taking the stage at around 2:30 in the morning.
Delays completely derailed the opening day of the 31st annual event, which returned to the Superdome in New Orleans this past weekend. According to Nola.com, opening night Friday, July 4, featured a whopping eight acts, with Hill joining the lineup just two days before the concert. As the show got underway, it was quickly beset by scheduling issues that only got worse as the night wore on.

Lauryn Hill headlined the first night of the 2025 Essence Festival of Culture on Friday, July 4th, just days after being added to the lineup. When she took the stage at the Caesars Superdome nearly two hours behind schedule around 2:30 a.m., the stadium was “essentially empty,” according to Nola.com. While she is notorious for running late, this time it wasn’t entirely her fault.
As reported by Nola.com, the evening ran behind schedule from the start, with each of the seven performers before Hill pushing the timeline further back. By the midpoint of the show, Memphis rapper GloRilla had finished her set 45 minutes after the Isley Brothers were originally slated to perform.
These delays resulted in Babyface starting his performance nearly two hours late around midnight, and then Maxwell not beginning his scheduled 11:15 p.m. performance until 12:55 a.m. By the time Maxwell’s gear was...

Lauryn Hill played to a largely empty stadium Friday night as part of the 2025 Essence Festival of Culture, after taking the stage hours after scheduled.
While Hill has a bit of a reputation for late shows, this time it appeared out of her hands as Essence’s first day as a whole started late on Friday. Hill had been added to the lineup days prior — with the rest of Friday’s lineup including GloRilla, the Isley Brothers, Babyface and Maxwell. Coco Jones, who also stars on the Peacock show Bel-Air, was an unannounced performer. Singer Lucky Daye and Kandi Burruss’ girl group, Psiryn, were also early performers.

Lovie Simone, previously known for her roles in Greenleaf and Raising Kanan, is now the lead star of the Netflix series Forever, alongside Michael Cooper Jr. Mara Brock Akil’s adaptation of Judy Blume’s 1975 coming of age novel of the same name shows Simone as Keisha, a teenager who experiences love and growing pains in the late 2010’s in Los Angeles.
Despite the challenges she faced, including being exposed by an ex-boyfriend, dealing with financial issues at home and working towards a track scholarship for Howard University, Keisha showed up every day for herself through her fashion choices.
“She was a little nerd, so in my head and everyone else’s heads, when you think of nerd, you don’t think too stylish,” Simone explains. “Mara was like, ‘There’s so much more to Black life’ and Regina [King] was like, ‘This is where you’re at in your Black life as a woman,...

One group of musicians that frequently sparks polarizing opinions is female rappers. Unfortunately, they often face intense scrutiny for their image and content, including their fashion choices, actions, and lyrical themes.
If a woman raps about sex in detail, the angry mobs run for their pitchforks and torches; however, if a male rapper releases a song just as explicit, no one bats an eye.

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson had a tall order to one-up himself after he and producer Joseph Patel won the Best Documentary Feature Oscar in 2022 for “Summer of Soul.” But he found it with “Sly Lives!,” the story of Sly Stone and his revolutionary music with Sly & the Family Stone. Beyond just a biographical account, the documentary, subtitled “(aka The Burden of Black Genius),” examined something bigger: The extraordinary representational burden Black artists carry.
Asking the 20 or so artists who appear in “Sly Lives!” about that — from Jimmy Jam to D’Angelo to André 3000 — Questlove had a realization: It’s “probably the most frightening question they’ve ever been asked,” he said at a Q&a for the film, which occurred at IndieWire’s Pass the Remote event, presented by Disney and Hulu. At the 2025 Met Gala on Monday, rapper Megan Thee Stallion took the ultimate risk and snuck her phone into the high-profile event.
The Met Gala famously has a strict no-phone policy, with Vogue explaining the goal to keep the event “largely under wraps.”
However, Megan Thee Stallion disregarded the rule and posted a video of her, rap queen Doechii, and WNBA star Angel Reese feasting on fancy appetizers, including truffle lobster rolls, caviar and vegan lox.
She laughed, “We’re not supposed to have our phones, but we’re doing it.”
While there is no information regarding any potential punishment or consequences for using phones at the gala, Megan Thee Stallion was not the only celebrity who ignored the rule.
Sydney Sweeney, Halle Bailey and Lisa all posed for a selfie together. Angela Bassett and Tara Shahidi also shared a photo of the evening, as well as Questlove, Kim Kardashian and Jaden Smith.

Moments before the Met Gala was set to begin, I confessed to a friend, with whom I’d been texting, that I was a little stressed about what celebrities would wear this year. The theme and accompanying exhibition — Superfine: Tailoring Black Style — marked a historic moment for the Costume Institute, which organizes the fundraising gala with Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. It is the first exhibition to focus on designers of color and only the second show dedicated to menswear. (The first was Bravehearts: Men in Skirts in 2003.)
Superfine is inspired by the scholar Monica L. Miller’s excellent book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, a cultural history of Black dandyism and its most influential sartorial figures, and Andrew Bolton, head curator at the Institute, tapped Miller to help build the exhibition.
“Who will do this well?” I asked my friend, as if she were an oracle.

Jessie Reyez got emotional in the studio while filming the latest episode of Rolling Stone Recommends. She wasn’t talking about her new studio album Pain in Memories, which arrived last week, on which she unpacks reflections on her relationship with success, becoming a healthier version of herself, and finding the silver lining in heartbreak. No, what brought her nearly to tears was actually the idea of introducing aliens to love by showing them a video captured while she was playing with her niece. Laila! has flourished more in the year leading up to her 19th birthday than some artists do in decades. The Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and producer first broke through on TikTok with spacey viral ditties “Like That” and “Not My Problem,” showing her intrinsic ear for R&b’s current wave and its off-center potential. She quickly followed that with her purely DIY debut album, Gap Year!, which helped nab Tyler, the Creator and Solange as fans.

The results were sometimes worldwide hits like “Smooth” (with Rob Thomas) or “Maria Maria” (with Wyclef Jean), but others fell between the cracks and never found the audience they deserved.

The life of R&b legend Roberta Flack was celebrated at a star-studded memorial in Harlem, New York’s Abyssinian Baptist Church on Monday, March 10th. Fugees members Ms. Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean made a surprise appearance, performing covers of Flack’s songs.
The duo took on Flack’s classic “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” before delivering Fugees’ version of “Killing Me Softly with His Song,” which launched them into stardom and remains the group’s biggest hit.
As Billboard reports, Hill prefaced their performance with a remembrance of the singer. “We weren’t formally asked to do this because I think they were a little shy in asking us to attend,” she said. “So we kind of bum-rushed the service because it really wouldn’t be possible for us to just stand by and not participate.”

Doechii’s post-Alligator Bites Never Heal ascendance into rap stardom isn’t a new dynamic. But it’s been a while since we’ve seen a rap-star ascendance that’s not paired with controversial allegations, a zest for riling the public into social engagement, or dog whistling to incels. Her appeal is mostly based on her music, savvy creative direction, and considerable charisma. Watching her rise feels like a return to a bygone era of the music industry that Gen Z fans have never seen in a hip-hop context. Maybe...

Did Nicki Minaj and Cardi B finally end their long-running feud, or was it just a temporary truce before things got messy again? After years of shade, diss tracks, and even a flying shoe incident (because why not?), the rap queens seemed to have put their beef to rest, at least for a while. Fans were shocked when the two, who had been at odds for so long, appeared to call a ceasefire. But let’s be real, this wasn’t just some small argument; their feud was practically a hip-hop soap opera.
Cardi B posing for a picture and Nicki Minaj taking a selfie
For years, their rivalry fueled internet debates, divided fan bases, and made headlines every time one of them so much as blinked in the other’s direction. So when the rumors of peace surfaced, people weren’t sure whether to believe it or brace for another round of drama.

Few wardrobe staples are as iconic as a denim jacket and musicians have long embraced the layering piece as part of their on-stage — and off-stage — looks. From Bob Marley and Bob Dylan to Madonna and Pharrell, a denim jacket can be at once luxe and laidback, spanning genres as varied as country and hip-hop, and all ages, genders and personal expressions too.

A massive trove of live performances from the late-Nineties/early-Aughts glory days of music television has finally made it to the streaming era, with Paramount+ uploading old episodes of MTV Unplugged, CMT Crossroads, and VH1 Storytellers.
As Billboard notes, these collections aren’t entirely comprehensive, with random episodes and full seasons missing here and there for all three programs. Nevertheless, there’s still a deep assortment of classic performances to dig through, including most of the episodes that appeared on Rolling Stone’s list of the 15 Best Episodes of MTV Unplugged.

SNL50: The Anniversary Special, itself the climax of weeks of celebratory documentaries and live specials celebrating Saturday Night Live, was brought to a rock and roll close by Paul McCartney, who performed a Beatles medley including “Golden Slumbers,” “Carry That Weight,” and “The End.” That final song might have been a direct nod to one of McCartney’s most famous appearances on SNL, opposite Chris Farley.
In the February 13th, 1993 episode of SNL, McCartney was the show’s musical guest but also made an appearance on “The Chris Farley Show” (one of the most relatable sketches ever produced if you’ve ever interviewed a celebrity). In the sketch, an awkward Farley asks McCartney a series of awkward questions, ending with a query about the lyrics from the song “The End”: “‘In the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.’ Is that true?”

Kicking off with a tribute to the Blues Brothers from the evening’s host Jimmy Fallon, last night’s “SNL50: The Homecoming Concert” pulled out all the stops in celebrating the show’s rich musical history, as well as the influence music has had on its comedy. And though Fallon made sure to start the affair at Radio City Music Hall by pointing out that everyone in the room had some form of connection to “Saturday Night Live” and were not there as casual spectators, watching at home, its clear the production worked hard to place fans of the staple variety series right at the the center of the action as well.

“Saturday Night Live” is known for making audiences laugh for the past 50 years, but it is not complete without the iconic live music performances that have cemented their own place in pop culture.
“SNL50: The Homecoming Concert” brought together over 25 artists who made a mark on the sketch show live from Radio City Music Hall. The concert event features musical guests spanning the series’ half-century on the air.
Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Snoop Dogg and The B-52s, among many others, performed live during the homecoming concert, while “SNL” alum Jimmy Fallon hosted, featuring his own late night show’s band, The Roots.
In late January, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson helmed a documentary, “Ladies & Gentlemen … 50 Years of SNL Music,” that sifted through the archives of the show’s musical history. The NBC documentary featured several artists that took the stage at Radio City for the in-person anniversary special.
