Was an altar boy and attended a Seminary as a Freshman in High School.

Served as a Green Beret in the Vietnam War.

Is a second-generation American. His mother was from Scotland and his father was from France.

Earned an MFA in Film Studies from the NYU: Tisch School of the Arts in 1977.

Graduated from Montclair State University.

Attended Rutgers University for one year before joining the United States Army where he was a Team Leader with Special Forces in Vietnam and Laos. He did two tours and participated in what he called SLAM operations, short for Search, Locate, Annihilate and Monitor.

Has two sons Scot and Chris, and two daughters, Joy and Nina.

Taught filmmaking at Montclair State, Hofstra, and Five Towns College in New York.
