Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Bonjour Tristesse (Durga Chew-Bose)
There was slight trepidation going into Bonjour Tristesse. Justifying itself as another “adaptation” of Françoise Sagan’s text rather than remake of Otto Preminger’s masterpiece of mise-en-scène, there’s still some hesitation about the chutzpah that must go into thinking you can top that great craftsman at the height of his power. As directed by writer-turned-filmmaker Durga Chew-Bose with a great deal of formal assurance, this 2024 iteration is a highly respectable effort that’ll speak to countless people the original didn’t. One major difference being that Preminger made the film as a showcase for the muse he was having an affair with, Jean Seberg, casting some leering-male element onto the whole project. Chew-Bose’s project isn...

Although David Lynch died before he could bring his final script to the screen, his family hopes to share the work with his fans.
Following the honorary Oscar winner’s death at age 78 in January, his daughter Jennifer Lynch recently addressed the limited series, tentatively titled Unrecorded Night, which he was developing for Netflix in his final years.
“None of us ever tried to make his series in his place,” Jennifer told The Times. “We are considering offering that as a published piece, so that people can sit with his ideas. It would be very sad if people didn’t get to see it.”
After David Lynch died of cardiac arrest following an emphysema diagnosis, Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos revealed that the Twin Peaks creator “came into Netflix to pitch a limited series, which we jumped at,” adding that he will “always wonder about what he had in mind for...

The world sadly lost David Lynch earlier this year, but before his death, there was talk of returning to the world of Twin Peaks. While speaking with NME, Twin Peaks co-creator Mark Frost confirmed that the pair had a “little bit of a recipe forming” that would continue the series.
“A little bit, yeah. We had a little bit of a recipe forming; nothing terribly formal, but it was in the wind,” Frost said. “I felt there were uncertainties about his health, so I didn’t press him on it, but nothing really stopped the flow of his creativity. I’m kind of the same way, so yeah, we’ll see what happens.“
Could we still see more Twin Peaks? “I honestly don’t know yet,” Frost said. “It’s still kind of too soon, but it’s something I’ll get around to thinking about long and hard.“

David Lynch was apparently ready to get back to work with his longtime collaborators Kyle MacLachlan, Laura Dern, and Naomi Watts before his passing. Lynch’s daughter Jennifer Lynch told The Times that the trio of actors, all of whom have appeared in numerous Lynch projects, were tentatively going to star in shelved Netflix series “Unrecorded Night.” The script for the show, which Lynch completed prior to his death at age 78 in January 2025, might still be released as a book instead.
“I was sworn to secrecy but yes, I’m sure Kyle [MacLachlan] would have been part of it,” Jennifer Lynch said of the show. “And Laura [Dern], and Naomi [Watts]. He loved to play with his friends.”
Jennifer Lynch added that despite being a filmmaker herself, “Unrecorded Night” will not be made by any of the Lynch children…and most likely, not by any other director either. “None of us ever tried...

Update: Speaking to The Times, David Lynch’s daughter, Jennifer, noted that Unrecorded Night would’ve likely starred Kyle MacLachlan, Laura Dern, and Naomi Watts. On its appearance, Lynch offered a promising update: “We are considering offering that as a published piece, so that people can sit with his ideas. It would be very sad if people didn’t get to see it.” Meanwhile, Mark Frost noted that he and Lynch “had a very early idea” for a new season of Twin Peaks that was hindered by the director’s health; for now, no continuation is planned but the co-creator (author of two books set in the series’ world) notes “there may be other ways.” Read the original story below and our full interview with Deming here.

Exclusive: Mubi has acquired rights to Hal & Harper, the acclaimed indie TV series from actor-filmmaker Cooper Raiff (Cha Cha Real Smooth), for streaming in the U.S. and France, on the heels of its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The eight-episode family drama, co-starring Lili Reinhart and Mark Ruffalo, will premiere exclusively on the service this fall.

This marks another win for independently produced television at a time when the business model is still being tested. Other recent examples of indie series that have gone on to significant streaming deals include Shane Gillis’ hit comedy Tires, which just returned for a second season, as well as Mark Duplass’ Penelope, both of which wound up at Netflix.

David Duchovny is synonymous with FBI Agent Fox Mulder in The X-Files. The supernatural thriller series put him and actress Gillian Anderson on the map, and made conspiracies great again. However, the role was not the only agent part played by Duchovny as he played Denise Bryson, the DEA agent in Twin Peaks.
David Lynch’s Twin Peaks is hardly the usual procedural, but Duchovny has never been a part of such stuff. He played the role of a trans DEA agent who helps Kyle MacLachlan’s Dale Cooper in season 2. The part was originally supposed to be played by James Spader, who reportedly created the character as well.

Luca Marinelli (The Eight Mountains, The Old Guard) plays the titular tyrant in the scarily prescient story, adapted from the documentary novel by Antonio Scurati, about Mussolini’s rise to power and the birth of fascism in Italy.

Looking for a way to stay dry during the rainy month of April? What better place to cozy up than your local repertory cinema. For those based in New York and Los Angeles, the offerings over the next few weeks are some of the best of the year thus far, with multiple series being held on both coasts that put a light on some of cinema’s unsung heroes. Starting in the east, Film at Lincoln Center will be paying homage to UCLA’s L.A. Rebellion movement of the 1970s and ’80s. Revitalizing Black cinema after the market for Blaxploitation began to dwindle, this collective included filmmakers such as Charles Burnett, Julie Dash, Larry Clark, Zeinabu irene Davis, and many more.

The beloved “Star Wars” sequel “The Empire Strikes Back” is set to open this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival on April 24, with director George Lucas presenting the film for its 45th anniversary.
“’The Empire Strikes Back’ is like ‘The Godfather Part II.’ Yes, technically, they’re sequels, the second movie in a series. But they are so much more,” TCM’s primetime anchor Ben Mankiewicz said in a statement. “The first ‘Star Wars’ picture in 1977 ignited a new era in Hollywood and turned a generation of young people into passionate movie fans for life. Then, somehow, three years later, along comes ‘Empire,’ which might even be better. It’s a stunning accomplishment and surely stands one of the great achievements in the history of film.”
Additional titles that will screen at this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival include “The Fabulous Baker Boys,” “The Lady Eve,” “Cinderella,” “Apocalypse Now,...

The Twilight Zone is one of the most brilliant and trippy series ever made. Created by Rod Serling, the CBS series is a virtual and psychologically thrilling trip into the unknown. The Twilight Zone premiered over six decades ago, and it still holds up very well as far as the stories and the visual experience go. Maybe that’s why the Jordan Peele reboot failed: it couldn’t capture the same magic as the Serling series did. So, if you loved the trippy stories, inventive settings, and compelling characters in The Twilight Zone, here are some similar shows you should check out next.

The Log Lady was a beloved part of “Twin Peaks.” But Catherine Coulson was much more than that. She was a fan favorite who made time to speak with series enthusiasts and helped perpetuate its lore, as well as a longtime actor with Ashland’s Oregon Shakespeare Festival and a camera assistant who pulled focus for David Lynch, John Cassavetes and Albert Brooks.
Coulson made “everyone who was close to her feel like they were her best friend,” says Richard Green, director of “I Know Catherine, The Log Lady,” a feature-length documentary that screens at Ojai’s Playhouse Theatre Saturday with a Q&a from “Twin Peaks” co-creator Mark Frost.
Several of those friends were involved in making the doc, which ends with the dramatic story of the last few days of Coulson’s life, as Lynch and company raced against her rapidly progressing lung cancer to include her in...

The beginning of 2025 saw the tragic loss of David Lynch, a one-of-a-kind filmmaker whose unique vision and groundbreaking filmography have shaped a generation of moviegoers and cinephiles. In light of his passing, David Lynch enthusiasts, both old and new, have been revisiting the director's vast back catalog, which consists of various shorts, television projects, and feature films. In March, Paramount+ will be home to two more of Lynch's works for viewers to enjoy, with his 1984 adaptation of Dune and his seminal work Mulholland Drive hitting the streaming platform on March 1st. Both movies represent different highs (and lows) in the director's storied career and speak to his unmatched influence on genre films that continues to this day.
David Lynch's Dune was the director's first big studio production, and the process of bringing Frank Herbert's ambitious and sprawling novel to life was no easy feat for the filmmaker. A...

Surrealist filmmaker David Lynch, who passed away on Jan. 15, 2025, at age 78, leaves behind one of the most unique filmographies of any director in cinematic history, releasing 10 feature films between 1977 and 2006. But arguably Lynch's most popular contribution to popular culture wasn't a film at all, but a TV show: Twin Peaks. Premiering on ABC in 1990 before being abruptly canceled after its second season in 1991, the supernatural mystery series centers on FBI agent Dale Cooper's (Kyle MacLachlan) investigation into the murder of local prom queen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) in a small Washington town.
The series became an instant pop culture phenomenon, spawning a polarizing prequel film, an acclaimed third season released on Showtime in 2017, and various other media, from books to music. But, despite the show's immense popularity, many viewers might not know that its premise was inspired by real-life events. Indeed, series co-creator Mark Frost based the story of...

David Lynch once flirted with a Marilyn Monroe biopic so bold, it never stood a chance. This veered into conspiracy territory, hinting the Kennedys might’ve played a hand in Monroe’s untimely death. The idea sparked instant buzz but also sent studios running for cover.

In 1990, ABC premiered a mystery-horror drama created by Mark Frost and the late-David Lynch that would go on to have a cult following many years later. That show would be called Twin Peaks, which focused on the titular Pacific Northwest town home to a lot of eccentric residents and supernatural events, all discovered by a FBI agent (Kyle MacLachlan) who comes to town to investigate the murder of a local teenager.

David Lynch, the undisputed master of surrealism and the uncanny, has left an indelible mark on the world of film and television. His works are characterized by haunting visuals, enigmatic narratives, and an unparalleled ability to explore the darker corners of human nature. Upon his passing, we hope to commemorate his lasting impact on the art of cinema with a closer look at seven of his most iconic projects, with my personal favorite, Twin Peaks, reigning supreme.
7. Dune (1984)
While Dune remains one of Lynch’s most polarizing works, it deserves recognition for its ambition and scale. Adapting Frank Herbert’s sprawling sci-fi epic was no small feat, and Lynch brought his unique visual style and atmospheric world-building to the project. Starring actor Kyle MacLachlan in his first collaboration with Lynch, the film immerses viewers in the desolate beauty of Arrakis.

The late David Lynch wrote a “masterful script” called One Saliva Bubble that Steve Martin nearly starred in during the early 1980s, Martin once relayed in an interview.
“1989,” corrected Martin Short.
“Were you offered that?” Martin asked.
Short sighed. “We were going to do it together.”
“Oh really?” said Martin, living his own Lynchian dream sequence. “I don’t remember that.”
Lynch and his Twin Peaks collaborator Mark Frost wrote One Saliva Bubble, an absurdist body-swap comedy that would have been the weirdest thing Short or Martin had ever done. Like many Lynch films, it would have been set in Small Town America. The plot: Chaos ensues when a tiny saliva bubble escapes a security guard’s mouth and floats into a secret government weapons system, setting off a chain reaction that causes the town’s residents to switch identities with one another.

Throughout his career, visionary filmmaker David Lynch, whose death was announced Thursday at the age of 78, made 10 features and dozens of short films. He only ever did two TV series (plus a 3-part anthology), but through one of them, Twin Peaks, his impact on the medium was profound.
“Even though, he’s probably better known as a filmmaker, when he entered TV, he revolutionized it,” says Gary Levine, Senior Creative Advisor at Showtime Networks who was a development executive on both the original Twin Peaks series at ABC and its continuation at Showtime.

It's safe to say that director David Lynch and writer Mark Frost were experiencing a boom in popularity after the initial success of the breakthrough series Twin Peaks. Unsurprisingly, this prompted ABC to greenlight another series developed by the duo, a little-known, short-lived sitcom called On The Air (1992). The pilot episode was voted number 57 out of TV Guide's "100 Greatest Episodes of All Time." Despite the accolade, only three of seven episodes aired in the U.S. between June 20 and July 4, 1992, but in the U.K., the series was shown in its entirety.

Before rising to CEO of Disney, Bob Iger was president of ABC Entertainment from 1989–1992. When he joined in spring 1989, pilots ordered by his predecessor, including David Lynch and Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks, were just getting into production.
Iger is credited as one of the project’s champions, helping the pilot get picked up to series. The gamble paid off, with Twin Peaks becoming a monster hit for then ratings-challenged ABC and a popular culture phenomenon.
Now back as Disney CEO, Iger remembered Lynch following the filmmaker’s death at 78.
“David Lynch was a brilliant filmmaker, who taught me the value of taking big artistic risks when he created Twin Peaks for ABC,” Iger wrote on Instagram. “He was also utterly original and I will forever respect and admire his creative courage and the breadth and depth of his talent.”

David Lynch will forever be known as a film auteur, though the consummate artist never restricted himself to a single medium. Painting, radio and even coffee production all fell within his repertoire — but Lynch’s final work as a director was “Twin Peaks: The Return.” Per the title, the 17-part Showtime series marked a homecoming of sorts for Lynch, who had circled back to the small screen after a quarter-century-long hiatus. With the ABC drama “Twin Peaks,” Lynch and his co-creator Mark Frost had already disrupted television for good. With “The Return,” Lynch cemented serial, episodic storytelling as a cornerstone of his legacy.

Twin Peaks first terrified audiences when it was released in 1990, as it featured some of the most iconic villains and horrifying sequences in American TV history. The late-David Lynch and Mark Frost crafted a show that captured audiences firstly for its suspense, mystery, and the charming Pacific-Northwestern town of Twin Peaks, and then subsequently for its surreal and often supernatural horrors. Despite some of the CGI becoming dated, and the show relying on a couple of now-overused tropes, the original series -- which tells the story of FBI Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle Maclachlan) as he tries to solve the mystery of who or what killed Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) -- still holds up as being totally terrifying.

When it debuted in the spring of 1990, David Lynch and Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks was inarguably the strangest show to have ever been made for American television. It was, simultaneously, a gothic horror story, a murder mystery, a supernatural thriller, a throwback to 1950s soap operas and movie melodramas, and a goofy comedy. Its stories intermingled human-scale nightmares like sex trafficking, drug addiction, domestic abuse, and incestuous rape with demonic possession, psychic visions, and periodic trips to another dimension where a dwarf hung out in a very red room.

Pour one (cup of coffee) out for a true cinematic genius — David Lynch has died.
And while he’s obviously had a huge impact on the worlds of art, film, and, sometimes YouTube, for those of us who were too young to watch Twin Peaks when it came out, and waaay too young to see Blue Velvet when it played in theaters, our first taste of Lynch’s style was in a cartoon.
In the second installment of The Simpsons’ “Who Shot Mr. Burns?” two-parter, Chief Wiggum chugs a carton of warm cream while attempting to pull an all-nighter. After immediately falling asleep, he’s transported to Twin Peaks’ red room, the extra-dimensional space full of jazz music and designer furniture. Not unlike how “The Man From Nowhere” and other supernatural entities aided Agent Cooper on the original show, Lisa provides Chief Wiggum with the clue he needs to crack...

David Lynch, the visionary filmmaker who died Thursday at 78, months after revealing he had been diagnosed with emphysema as a lifetime smoker, was such an essential figure in the history of cinema that he had his own adjective: Lynchian. The term describes works that share characteristics with some of his most memorable creations.
Lynch’s work was unmistakable. “I loved David’s films. Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and Elephant Man defined him as a singular, visionary dreamer who directed films that felt handmade,” Steven Spielberg, who cast Lynch to play John Ford in The Fabelmans, said in the aftermath of his friend’s death. It’s a sentiment shared widely on social media over the last several hours.
In movies like 1986’s Blue Velvet, 1997’s Lost Highway, and 2001’s Mulholland Drive — not to mention the 1990s ABC TV drama Twin Peaks — Lynch portrayed a mundane America of seemingly pastoral splendor undercut by stupefaction and terror.

The great David Lynch has passed away at the age of 78. And while the legendary artist and filmmaker will no doubt be remembered for his surreal, often nightmarish works, what arguably made him such a beloved cultural fixture was his sense of humor.
While one might expect the guy who made Eraserhead and Blue Velvet to be a brooding, self-serious loner, Lynch was anything but. He was a uniquely charming, offbeat character who wouldn’t shy away from the talk show circuit. He made regular appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and once decided that David Letterman’s Late Night was the ideal place to ask fans of Twin Peaks to write into the network to help save the struggling show.

Almost all of Lynch’s films contain at least some comedic elements; like how Mulholland Drive includes a mini-comedy of errors about an incompetent hit man.
