If you grew up in the 1990s, you will remember "Sabrina the Teenage Witch," the Melissa Joan Hart-led sitcom about the Archie Comics universe's most magical high school student. It tells the story of Sabrina Spellman, who, on her 16th birthday, learns that she has otherworldly abilities and comes from a long line of witches. Other than that, Sabrina is just a regular teenager who lives with her aunts and their talking cat and spends her free time hanging out with her non-magical boyfriend. The show is far more lighthearted than Netflix's horror-focused "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina," and it has an interesting connection to "Deadpool" star Ryan Reynolds to boot.
In 1996, Showtime released a "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" TV movie, which effectively served as a pilot for the sitcom. The film once again features Melissa Joan Hart in the titular role (albeit with a different surname), and...

The perils and plights of adolescence have long been a source of fascination for television audiences. That’s particularly apparent nowadays with Netflix, HBO, Hulu, Showtime, FX, and others vying for zeitgeist dominance with teen-focused dramas playing to a variety of creative strengths. As narratives have gotten more sophisticated overall across the TV landscape, it makes sense that the ways in which we look at stories about young people have also evolved. From “Never Have I Ever” to “Yellowjackets,” TV teens in 2023 are among some of the most rich ever written.

On its massive-eyed face, “The Masked Singer” may seem like just a goofy reality competition series, meant for little more than an hour of escapism. And really, it is that. Fox’s singing contest is predicated on sticking various calibers of famous people in insane, occasionally nightmare-fueling costumes, having them perform for a live audience, and letting the audience guess who the voice belongs to.
It’s simple and merry, if occasionally a little obvious (just about everyone clocked Vanessa Hudgens and Amber Riley immediately). But, as it wraps up its 13th season this week, “The Masked Singer” has also become something else entirely, according to those who have competed on it — a surprisingly therapeutic experience.
The show originated in South Korea in 2015, titled “King of Mask Singer.” In 2017, executive producer Craig Plestis, a veteran in reality TV and now the President and CEO of Smart Dog Media, watched an...

For fans of King of the Hill, Monsignor Martinez is about as cool as you can get. Netflix is getting really good at making Hallmark-type films. But the streamer does it a bit differently. We know the Hallmark Channel drill: Boy moves to town, girl is trying to get out of a bad relationship, they meet and girl doesn't like boy, and then they end up falling in love and being happy forever. Netflix Originals normally add a lot more intrigue.

Running from 1996 to 2003, the series revolved around Sabrina Spellman (Hart), a teenage girl who discovers she has magical powers. Rhea and Broderick played Sabrina's aunts, Hilda and Zelda, who guide the teen through her magical education and typical coming-of-age angst. They later appeared in the Netflix series The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which took a spookier approach to the character.

It's hard to imagine the Deadpool actor starring in a teen drama, but Ryan Reynolds did get his start in television, and teen soap operas in particular. Ryan's first-ever role was a snarky kid with a heart for trouble in Hillside. With his penchant for mischief and humor, anyone with a good imagination could see the actor in the role. However, a dive into Reynolds' credits would reveal some very interesting things that most Deadpool fans don't know about the star. Over the years, Reynolds has portrayed some strange roles. From a hallucinating factory worker to an imaginary friend to the iconic "Blue Shirt Guy," the actor has a track record of putting himself in quirky roles and excelling in them. The truth is that Reynolds is a very versatile actor who can master a range of diverse roles.

Are you ready to delve back into the world of witches and mayhem? Agatha All Along is the most highly anticipated series of the year, but sadly, it’s not on Netflix. This is a Disney+ series.
What about shows on Netflix that have the same vibe? The great news is there are plenty to watch, and here are five to get you started.

Let’s start with a Netflix Original that we would have loved to see more of. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina brought us a darker telling of the story compared to the Melissa Joan Hart comedy of the ‘90s. It felt more like a witchy tale, which is needed considering the topics.
We meet Sabrina, a witch who doesn’t really want to give up her mortal life.

“Sabrina the Teenage Witch” is a certified Criterion title, believe it or not.
The beloved franchise about a beloved occult teen, iconically played by Melissa Joan Hart, is officially amongst the new streaming selections for the Criterion Channel. “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” centered on Sabrina (Hart), a high school student who lives with her two aunts Hilda (Caroline Rhea) and Zelda (Beth Broderick) as she navigates coming into her powers. Her cat Salem (Frank Conniff) also provides snarky spiritual guidance.
The ABC-produced franchise was based on the comic book series that debuted in 1971. The “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” show is available to stream on Paramount+ as of 2023.
The 1996 TV movie was a spinoff of the TV series, and was followed by 1998’s “Sabrina Goes to Rome” and 1999’s “Sabrina Down Under.”
Now, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” joins Criterion’s “Witches” programming for October 2024, ushering in the 40-year anniversary of the Criterion platform.
