The Showtime series Dead Like Me went off the air in 2004 and I still haven’t gotten over it. The program features a top-notch cast, quality writing, and a compelling premise. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Series creator Bryan Fuller hit it out of the park with the idea. Sadly, he left the show during the first season (over creative differences with MGM Television). Following his abrupt departure, the series continued without him. And while the show would have been even better with Fuller’s presence a constant throughout, the seeds that he planted still blossomed beautifully.
If my adoration has piqued your interest and you’d like to scope the series, you can find Dead Like Me streaming on Prime Video presently.

After the news that Netflix has ordered a pilot for the upcoming spin-off to the 1987 seriesA Different World, six series regulars have been added to the cast, including someone to play Dwayne and Whitley's daughter, according to Deadline. Chibuikem Uche, Maleah Joi Moon, Cornell Young, Jordan Aaron Hall, Alijah Kai Higgins, and Kennedi McClure are all now a part of the call sheet. According to Deadline, the series will follow Whitley Gilbert-Wayne's (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne's (Kadeem Hardison) youngest daughter, Deborah, during her time at an Hbcu. It's not been confirmed if the series will be returning to the fictional Hillman College (though with Whitley's penchant for legacy it wouldn't be surprising for the show to go in that direction). Moon has been cast as Deborah, giving fans their first look at Dwayne and Whitley's children. According to Deadline, Netflix has declined to comment on the casting.

Netflix’s followup to “A Different World” has added six cast members to the pilot, Variety has learned from sources.
Chibuikem Uche has been cast as Kojo along with Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah, Cornell Young as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, Alijah Kai Haggins as Rashida, and Kennedi McClure as Hazel.
Netflix declined to comment.
The followup to “A Different World” was first reported to be in development in August 2024, with the pilot being announced in March. As reported at that time, the new series would return to Hillman College, a fictional historically Black university, and follow the daughter of original series characters Whitley and Dwayne.
Felicia Pride serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner on the project. Debbie Allen, Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Bythewood also serve as executive producers. Werner produced the original show via The Carsey-Werner Company, while Allen also produced and...

Exclusive: Netflix’s A Different World spinoff pilot has cast 8 in leading roles. They are Chibuikem Uche as Kojo, Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah, Cornell Young as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, Alijah Kai Higgins as Haggins, and Kennedi McClure as Hazel, Deadline has learned.
Netflix declined to comment.
As Deadline reported previously, the streamer will shoot a pilot for A Different World, a sequel to the 1987 sitcom, which will chronicle Dwayne and Whitley’s daughter’s time at an Hbcu. The project had been in development at the streamer since last year, and the commissioning of the pilot is part of that process.
The pilot is a one-off and not part of a strategy shift, sources said. The pilot model in general is more often employed in comedy as a proof of concept for tone, chemistry among the ensemble cast, comedic timing and other key ingredients of a successful series.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from “The Game Is a Foot” Season 2, Episode 1 of “Poker Face,” now streaming on Peacock.
“Poker Face” writer Laura Deeley came up with the idea of featuring identical quintuplets for an episode of the whodunit series, and creator and director Rian Johnson thought it was “batshit insane in all the best ways.” But he wanted to give it a shot.
Johnson didn’t want to use anything fancy to pull it off. He wanted to dig into what a “Poker Face” episode looks like, and maintain that vintage aesthetic that had been established in Season 1 — but he wanted to use old-school camera trickery when it came to filming. Johnson says, “To me, that meant making sure we’re making every ounce of ‘What’s Up Doc?’ and French farce-like in one door, out the other, near misses and pretending to be different people.”

Poker Face is back and better than ever with the female Columbo efforts of Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne). It’s a drama, it’s a comedy, and honestly just a fun show to watch. You always know Cale is going to solve the case, but Natasha Lyonne has a slick coolness to her topped off with humorous sarcasm along the way. It’s no surprise to anyone why Poker Face season 2 on Peacock of the series holds a strong 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. After the success of the first season, creator Rian Johnson has made the second must-watch television.
Charlie is back on the run from the five families. Literally dodging Beatrix Hasps’ bullets at every turn. On the journey in the second season Charlie meets fascinating characters and solves countless mysteries. Still on the run from the mob, Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) finds herself consistently on the move. Even though she tries to lay low, they continue to come for her. Of course, because it’s Charlie Cale, murder finds its way into her life. The Season 2 premiere of Poker Face — “The Game is a Foot” — is directed by Rian Johnson, so we’re excited to see where he takes us.

When Peacock’s Poker Face premiered back in 2023, my biggest complaint came from a place of privilege: There was so much to enjoy about creator Rian Johnson and producer-star Natasha Lyonne’s loving tribute to the NBC Mystery Movie wheel programming of the ’70s that when the series settled for being “very good” instead of “great,” that felt regrettable.
For two subsequent years, nearly every time I watched a show boasting The World’s Greatest Detective or a Human Lie Detector — TV writers love a Human Lie Detector like a Hot Zone virologist loves a Hazmat suit — my takeaway was something akin to, “No, Elsbeth isn’t bad, but Poker Face showed how you could make basically the exact same show, only with a little bit more ambition and artistry.”

Netflix is eying A Different World as its next shot at a hit reboot series.
Per Deadline, the streaming giant is currently set to produce a pilot for a sequel series to 1987's A Different World. The follow-up will focus on Deborah, the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert-Wayne, portrayed by Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy in the original series.
Like the original, the A Different World will follow its cast of characters as they navigate life at an Hbcu (Historically Black College & Universities). The sequel will be written by Felicia Pride and directed by Debbie Allen. The pair will both executive produce alongside Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Bythewood. This marks a partial reunion, as Allen, Werner, Prince-Bythewood and Bythewood all worked together on the original series, with Allen having directed 83 of the series 144 episodes. Casting is currently underway for the part of Deborah and other leading and featured roles.

A Different World might be one of the most underrated series of the 1980s. It began in the shadow of The Cosby Show as a vehicle for Lisa Bonet. She left after a season of her new show, however, and the series got better. It was able to focus more on the great ensemble cast, including the fantastic Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison.
The series was recently added to Netflix, and still makes for binge-watchable viewing. An even better part is that the streamer has been in pre-production of a sequel to the series since 2024. Now, Netflix is doing something it has only done once before. That is, it has ordered a pilot to be shot. The only time this happened before was for Little Sky, a show that never made it to release.

Netflix is eyeing a return to A Different World, but it's using a process not commonly seen at the platform to get there. A sequel series to the original Cosby Show, the spin-off that ran at NBC from 1987 to 1993 has received a rare pilot order at the streaming service, one of only two times in the company's history that such an order has been handed down. Reportedly, the sitcom pilot will shoot this summer to get a better feel for the tone of the show and the dynamic between the cast, none of whom have been finalized yet. Development to continue the story of Whitley (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne's (Kadeem Hardison) family was first reported last August.
While shooting a pilot is the traditional process for a lot of television series, especially comedies, Netflix has always just ordered shows straight-to-series. The sole other occasion in which they bucked their...

It was reported last year that a sequel to A Different World was in early development, and now Netflix has ordered a pilot for the potential sitcom. The streaming service typically gives straight-to-series orders, and this is only the second pilot pickup at the studio that we know of.
A Different World was a spinoff of The Cosby Show, which followed Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) and her classmates at Hillman College. However, Denise was written out of the series after the first season when Bonet announced that she was pregnant. Although showrunner Debbie Allen was in favour of writing Bonet’s pregnancy into the show, Cosby vetoed it. He said that Lisa Bonet could be pregnant but not Denise Huxtable.
When the show came back for a second season, it was focused on the love story between Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison). The sequel series will...

The sequel series to “A Different World” is moving forward at Netflix, with the streamer giving out one of the only pilot orders in its history for the comedy project.
According to sources, the plan is shoot the pilot at the beginning of the summer to get a better sense of the show’s tone and of the chemistry among the ensemble cast. No cast members have been locked in at the time of this publishing.
An individual with knowledge of the situation says that Netflix does not plan to engage in a traditional pilot season like the broadcast networks, in which shows are competing for a limited number of slots.
Reps for Netflix declined to comment.
Netflix has eschewed a traditional pilot process for most of its history, only announcing their first ever pilot order in 2023. The streamer has instead focused on straight-to-series orders or script-to-series deals for their shows.

Price hikes. Monthly content removals. First season cancelations. In some way or another, I’ve come to just ignore all those deplorable acts from Netflix. But they just had to up the ante, didn’t they? They were sneaky about it this time, too. Instead of doing something on the service itself (which every subscriber would eventually come to see), they put the worst of spins on a new addition to its content library. On February 7 — seven months after it was pulled from Max — A Different World was finally able to be streamed again thanks to Netflix.

All six seasons of the beloved TV series, A Different World, are now streaming on Netflix. The show debuted in 1987 and was a spin-off of the immensely popular The Cosby Show and season one starred Lisa Bonet as Denise Huxtable as she attended the fictional Hillman College, a Historically Black College (Hbcu) in Virginia. The show was willing to tackle issues such as HIV / AIDS, apartheid, domestic violence, and more.
Bonet left the show after the first season due to a pregnancy with Lenny Kravitz, and the focus turned to Dwayne Wayne, a math genius played by Kadeem Hardison, and Whitley Gilbert, played by Jasmine Guy. Despite the main character departing, A Different World grew in popularity and lasted six seasons until the show ended in 1993. Also, in the second season, Debbie Allen, producer and director and Howard University alumni, focused on making the show more authentic to an Hbcu experience.

There was a time when NBC ruled the airwaves on Thursday night. Some of the shows to appear on that night include Seinfeld, Friends, and The Cosby Show. The last show has had some gray cast over it because of the allegations involving Bill Cosby, but the show was still full of talent and dealt with subjects in a different light.
One of the stars of the show was Lisa Bonet. She was such a popular character, in fact, that NBC decided to spin off her own show from The Cosby Show and have Bonet's character, Denise Huxtable, go off to college. Denise went to the fictional Hbcu Hillman College, but Bonet lasted only one year in the series. Ironically, the series A Different World was better after she left.
That is meant to be no offense to Bonet, but a tribute to how great the writing was on the show.

‘Mufasa’ Star Tiffany Boone Dreaded Singing. Now She’s on the Oscar Shortlist for Best Original Song
Tiffany Boone was done with voiceover auditions when the script for an unspecified lioness landed in her inbox.
“I just thought I was so bad at voiceovers,” Boone confesses. “I’d been trying for years and never booked a single thing. I quit probably a year or two before I got this audition — obviously, my agents didn’t listen and sent me this anyway.”
She owes her agents a thank-you note. Boone, 37, not only landed a part in the Disney prequel Mufasa: The Lion King, but was cast as central figure Sarabi, the queen of Pride Rock, otherwise known as Mufasa’s mate (and Simba’s future mom).

In 1976, Brian De Palma mounted the first film adaptation of a Stephen King novel with "Carrie." This was long before the author was a household name, so there was no noticeable hue and cry over the alterations the filmmaker made to the narrative. Even if some literalists did throw a fit over the film not being an overly-faithful recreation of King's original story, most fans of the book to this day will tell you that De Palma and screenwriter Lawrence D. Cohen served up with admirable concision a movie that is enthrallingly true in spirit to the tragic journey of Carrie White.
It might be hard for many to imagine someone making a better movie out of "Carrie" than a filmmaking legend like De Palma, but there's always room for different interpretations of a great novel. After all, there are multiple classic adaptations of Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women...

There are several members of the A Different World cast who have died - and the actors who have passed away after appearing on the NBC sitcom shows how high the caliber of talent in the show truly was. Airing between 1987 and 1993, A Different World was a spin-off of The Cosby Show that went on to gain a solid following in its own right. Jasmine Guy led the cast as Whitley Gilbert-Wayne, and the show followed her life at the fictional Hillman College.
In the years following the cancelation of the 1990s sitcom A Different World in 1993, several former cast members have passed away. Some were recurring presences on the show, whereas others were guest stars who only appeared in single episodes. However, each member of the A Different World cast who has died left with an incredible career behind them, highlighting how important the performances of the actors in...

While released in the thick of the vampire love triangle craze, The Vampire Diaries stood apart. Following the romantic pursuits of Virginia teen Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), the series emphasizes the push and pull between two vampire brothers, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). Adapted from the L.J. Smith books from the '90s, The CW show still added twists not present in the books, such as the long-running doppelgänger curse and fleshing-out side characters like Caroline Forbes (Candice King) and Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino).

Danielle Deadwyler almost reached the Oscar circle in 2023 with her extraordinary performance as a grieving mother in “Till.” But it was one of those tough-sit dramas that just wasn’t seen by enough people. This time, Netflix is behind her next likely awards contender, “The Piano Lesson”. The film is the third Denzel Washington-produced August Wilson adaptation after “Fences” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” — and arguably the best so far.
Directed by Malcolm Washington in his debut, the movie is set in Pittsburgh (per usual) and co-stars John David Washington as the brother who urgently tries to persuade his sister Berniece (Deadwyler) to sell their family inheritance, a giant piano engraved with the faces of their ancestors, and Samuel L. Jackson as their bemused uncle, watching and commenting on the proceedings.

Image Source Amazon You can add A Different World to the list of old shows that are getting a new generational reboot. Just as Frasier, The Conners (formerly Roseanne), Will & Grace, and Quantum Leap all returned more than a decade after their original finales, there are reports that Netflix is working on a new version of A Different World, focusing on the child of two original characters — Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne — as she spends her college years at her parents’ alma mater, Hillman College. Though it hasn’t been determined whether Jasmine Guy (who played Whitley) will be part of the new show, it wouldn’t surprise us to see her join the cast. We’ve spoken to her many times over the years about the show, and she’s always expressed a great deal of pride about her time on A Different World and what the show meant to so many people.

A Different World is the latest classic sitcom to get the revival treatment. According to an exclusive report by Deadline, Netflix is in early development on a sequel series to The Cosby Show spinoff, which would focus on the daughter of original series characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert attending their alma mater, Hillman College. The revival is headed by Grey's Anatomy writer and producer Felicia Pride, as well as original series producers, including Debbie Allen and Tom Werner.
Netflix hasn't yet commented on the report, which says the series is still in the very early stages of development, and no casting has begun. It is not known if any original series actors will reprise their roles, although it is likely Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne) and Jasmine Guy (Whitley) would return in some capacity. After a brief fakeout for Independence Day last month, the ladies of “The View” are now officially on summer break. And yes, it’ll be a bit longer until you can return to the table with them again.
Friday marked the Season 27 finale, and it came with a bit of news from host Sunny Hostin. To wrap up the show, she announced that “after 10 years and 2,143 episodes, this is also the last episode we’ll do from this studio.” Indeed, when the show returns for Season 28, it’ll be at a brand new table in a brand new studio.
The episode also welcomed Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg to the show, where he picked apart Donald Trump’s racist comments about Vice President Kamala Harris.
But if you’re here, you’re probably wondering when exactly the Season 28 return will be. Well, worry not, we have that answer. It’ll be Tuesday,...

There are people who’ll tell you that Japanese folklore fantasy Monkey airing at 6pm on Friday nights in the 1980s was the highpoint of post-school, pre-bedtime TV scheduling in the UK. Let’s not tell them that they’re wrong; let’s just pity them for having mistimed their childhood by a decade.
The 1990s were the real peak of the 6pm weeknight TV slot. As long as there was no Wimbledon, snooker, cricket, athletics or Horse of the Year Show, that’s where anyone too young to go to the pub found joy. While grown-ups were watching the Six O’Clock News, kids in households flush enough to have a second television switched on BBC Two or Channel 4. There, to quote Howard Carter upon breaking into Tutankhamun’s tomb, they found wonderful things.

Hardison will portray the character Gnarly, an old friend of Leo and Ivan. Gnarly was his nickname as a boxer back in the 1970s and it’s all anyone calls him. He walks with a limp, an old one. Gnarly’s a local legend, and he can go from warm to fierce in a heartbeat. He commands respect, partly because he can inflict massive physical damage, even at his advanced age — and partly because he has the authority and gravitas to stop other men in their tracks.

As of Saturday night, Judith Light and Jasmine Guy were finally able to add “Emmy winner” to their list of career achievements. The pair picked up trophies on the first night of the two-part Creative Arts Emmy Awards, held at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles.

“This one is about the fact that this Academy has acknowledged me in this way, which is huge,” said Light, who earned four previous nominations and has two daytime Emmys – this marked her first Primetime win. She won guest actress in a comedy series for her turn opposite Natasha Lyonne on Peacock’s “Poker Face.” “I’ve been in the business a long time. This is quite a gift to be nominated with all of these other women in this category who I still admire, and...

Per Variety, the lawsuit against Foxx identified a woman as Jane Doe, who accused Foxx of inappropriately touching her during an encounter at the Catch NYC rooftop lounge in 2015.
