Much of his character on NewsRadio (1995) was based on Foley's own personality. Most notably, his coffee addiction (he reportedly has several pots a day) and his love of the sitcom Les arpents verts (1965).

Introduction to comedy came when he wrote stand-up comedy material for a creative writing class.

Is the youngest member of the The Kids in the Hall (1988) troupe.

Was one of three cast members to appear in all 97 episodes of NewsRadio (1995).

In 2011, Foley stated that as a result of having been judicially mandated to pay Southey some $17,500 a month, or "literally 400 per cent of [his] income" in child support, he believes that if he returns to Canada he will be arrested.

Both his sons with former wife Southey have their mother's surname.

Met his first wife,Tabatha, in a bar when she was 17 and he was 20. Tabatha was on a date with one of Dave's friends at the time. She and Dave started arguing about whether the lead singer of Psychedelic Furs was a good singer.

Has been best friends with Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, Bruce McCulloch, and Scott Thompson since he was 19 years old.

Foley and his ex-wife Guerrero were remarried on December 31, 2016.

Wife Crissy gave birth to daughter Alina Chiara Foley on April 16th, 2003.
