Shelley Long Hates Being Asked About Leaving ‘Cheers’
Image
“I don't know too many people who would walk away from a mega hit like Cheers voluntarily,” Phil Donahue told Shelley Long in 1987.

Long heard that one a lot. In 1995, another interviewer approached the subject like this: “You’ve been in a lot of big hits, and you’ve been in some films that didn’t do as well.”

“Yeah, some flops,” Long laughed.

“Well, it seems like when the films that don’t do as well come out, there’s always some reviewer who says, ‘Oh, she shouldn’t have left Cheers,’ and they harp on that. Did that ever get you down? Were there moments when you regretted that decision at all?”

No regrets, replied Long. But there was something else that was getting her down. “I’ve been annoyed by the comments and the constant questions of ‘Do you regret? Do you ever regret? Do you blah blah blah?...

The 15 Best TV Shows Of The 1980s
Image
Media in the '80s was full of larger-than-life personalities, and TV was no exception. From high-concept action to star-driven crime solving and even confined comedies, bigger was usually better. Some of the best shows just kept growing, and a couple of the titles on this list of the best 1980s TV shows are still around (or at least have been revived very recently). Those that didn't last nonetheless made their mark on pop culture at large.

While not every show named below is an American show, they are all, to some degree, scripted. Even though the decade spawned many iconic talk shows and nonfiction programming, with hosts ranging from Phil Donahue to Robin Leach, those are best covered elsewhere. These are the stories that kept us coming back to their characters, actors, plots, and wild gimmicks, in a decade where money was seemingly no object, and TV tried to cater to every age group.

Mariska Hargitay’s 21 Years of Marriage May Not Have Happened If ‘Law & Order: Svu’ Co-Star Hadn’t Broken Her Heart
Image
Mariska Hargitay has been playing Olivia Benson for years in Law & Order: Svu. The show brought some great things into Hargitay’s life, including the Joyful Heart Foundation. However, the best thing she found on the show was her future husband, Peter Hermann. In the third-season episode, Monogamy, Hermann appeared as defense attorney Trevor Langan for the first time.

It was the beginning of a relationship that would complete two successful decades of marriage. They began dating in 2002, after Hermann’s first appearance on Svu, and got married in 2004. However, the two years in between weren’t all magical for the couple, who were hit with some hard realizations.

Peter Hermann gave Mariska Hargitay heartbreak before the Law & Order: Svu stars got married Mariska Hargitay as Olivia Benson and Peter Hermann as Trevor Langan in Law & Order: Svu | Credits: NBC

The Naked Gun 33 1/3: Was It Always Supposed to End the Franchise?
Image
When the great Leslie Nielsen made the media rounds in 1996, promoting his James Bond spoof, Spy Hard, everyone wanted to know one thing. Was he shocked when O.J. Simpson was arrested for murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Brown, and Ron Goldman, and did he think he was guilty? Ever the Canadian gent, Nielsen retired the ever-present fart machine he enjoyed using in interviews, and tried to give a thoughtful answer. Basically, he said that the Oj he knew on set from the three Naked Gun movies they did together never gave him an inkling that he would be capable of murder, although, to read between the lines of his answer, it was clear Nielsen likely had serious doubts as to his innocence.

Indeed, when The Naked Gun 33 1/3rd came out on March 18th 1994, no one who went to see it – and I was one of them – would have ever thought that three months later,...

Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington among Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients
Image
For over 60 years, the Presidential Medal of Freedom has been given out as the highest honor a civilian can get. Joining U.S. President Joe Biden’s list this year – his final in office – are some of our own favorite performers, including Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington.

The official White House website noted the philanthropic works of Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington – those in the fight against Parkinson’s and serving as a national spokesman for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, respectively – as key reasons for receiving the Medal of Freedom. Both have continued to fight the good fight for decades, so it is pretty amazing to see them recognized on this prestigious level. Notably, Denzel Washington was set to receive the Medal of Freedom in 2022 but could not attend due to contracting Covid-19.

Both Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington have made plenty of headlines as of late.

MSNBC Faces Potential for Big Changes in Comcast Cable Spin-Off
Image
MSNBC fans who are disappointed in the progressive-leaning network after Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 election may no longer have it to kick around.

The cable-news outlet could have to consider changing its name and familiar markings under a spin-off of the bulk of the cable assets of parent company Comcast, one of the nascent company’s new top executives suggested to an assemblage of MSNBC staffers Wednesday morning, according to two people familiar with the gathering.

Mark Lazarus, who will lead the spin-off after it separates from Comcast, told an audience that included Rachel Maddow, Chris Jansing and Katy Tur that he was not sure whether MSNBC would have to change its identity as part of the transaction, which will split the cable network and its business-news sibling CNBC from NBC News and NBCUniversal. If the two networks are no longer part of the NBC corporate entity, attendees wanted to know,...

Comcast Spinoff Of Cable Networks Leaves Questions Of How A Split Between MSNBC And NBC News Will Work
Image
Updated: Comcast’s announcement Wednesday that it will spin off nearly all of its cable networks has left a host of questions as to the path forward, particularly given the intertwined nature of NBC News with MSNBC and, to a lesser extent, CNBC.

“I could be completely wrong. We could all be fired a year from now. You never know what’s going to happen tomorrow,” Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough said on air this morning, before putting a more hopeful gloss on the pending change.

“What they are doing is what other media firms are doing — you spin off the cable channels which, seven years ago, were making a ton of money. Now they’re trying to figure out how to make them profitable.”

MSNBC and CNBC will be spun off along with other channels such as USA Network and Golf Channel into a separate company led by Mark Lazarus,...

Decades Before Maga Infiltrated the Hip-Hop World, Trq Rapped at The RNC

Hip-hop is ripe to be capitalized on, and GOP operatives are taking advantage while trying to take over swing states. Already, artists like Fivio Foreign, Kodak Black, and Sexyy Red have advocated for Donald Trump in various ways this election cycle (some with the help of Billy McFarland). Trump’s campaign is transparently pandering to Black voters through photo ops and with snippets from his speeches appearing in songs like Fivio and Kodak’s “ONBOA47RD,” a baffling political endorsement track.

However, Trump and his team aren’t the first...

Psst! 5 secrets about the 2024 Emmys I only learned by being there
Image
Emmy turned 76 this year, but her wrinkles still aren’t showing thanks to the tireless efforts of the production crew that helped put on this year’s awards show. (See the complete winners list.) After watching the ceremony on television all my life, I actually got to attend it this year and bore witness to “Hacks” and “Shōgun” winning the night’s biggest prizes. While seated in the Orchestra section of the Peacock Theater, I uncovered these five secrets about the 2024 Emmys that you wouldn’t know unless you were actually there.

TV Theme Songs

All of those classic tunes you heard while watching the ceremony on your screens was just the icing on the cake. During the commercials, attendees were treated to dozens more TV theme songs as the event was taking a break. In fact, when the show was dark, I heard everything from “Goosebumps” and “Home Improvement...

5 talk show hosts who were fired for controversial reasons
Image
Talk shows are a fickle business. There have been hundreds of talk shows throughout the history of television, and only a select few connect on such a profound level that they stick around. It's almost unheard of to go more than a few years on the air, let alone pull a Johnny Carson or David Letterman and stick around for decades.

The longevity guys will be saved for another list, though. This list is for the celebrities who didn't get a chance to get settled in their talk show gigs, or even leave on their own terms. We're talking about the controversial ones, the ones who were undone by personal scandals and off-screen antics. Let's begin, shall we?

In Memoriam: Phil Donahue Portrait by Photographer Joe Arce
Image
Chicago – Last week, the world woke to the news that Phil Donahue, talk show pioneer in the 1970s and beyond, had passed away at age 88. Photographer Joe Arce of HollywoodChicago.com took an Exclusive Portrait of the talker in 2010, and the Portrait is republished as a contributions memorial to Phil Donahue.

Midwestern at heart, Donahue was born in Cleveland, and found his way to Notre Dame University, where he graduated in 1957. He began his broadcasting career in Cleveland, but his break came as nationwide notice was focused on his interviews, subsequent work as a news anchor in Dayton, Ohio, and as a stringer for the Walter Cronkite-era CBS Evening News. His Dayton radio show “Conversation Piece” early on scored a triple historical talk coup with then presidential candidate John F. Kennedy, The Tonight Show host Johnny Carson and activist leader Malcolm X.

Critic’s Appreciation: Phil Donahue Transformed Daytime Television, and the Culture Wars Along With It
Image
For adults of a certain generation, daytime talk shows of the 1980s and 1990s represented all that was right with the world during a sick day home from school.

In an ideal scenario, your parents or caregivers would leave you to your own devices so you could veg out in front of the boob tube all day, munching on your favorite crap snacks and soaking in all the histrionic sensationalism this television genre had to offer. Spontaneous fist fights! Grotty-to-hottie makeovers! Baby daddy paternity tests! (Fun fact: I once attended a taping of Maury “You are not the father” Povich’s Maury in college, and the staff stuffed us with free pizza to entice us to stay through some reality star’s book promotion. Who said bread and circuses are ancient history?)

Like network TV soap operas and the “trashy novel” classics of the mid-20th century, tabloid talk shows...

TV talk pioneer Phil Donahue, who revolutionized the genre and blazed a trail, is dead at 88
Image
Phil Donahue, the celebrated King of Daytime Talk who altered the direction of talk television as host of the syndicated “The Phil Donahue Show” and later the redubbed “Donahue” for nearly three decades, died Sunday evening (August 18) following a long and undisclosed illness. He was 88 and surrounded by family, including his wife of 44 years, the actor, producer, author and social activist Marlo Thomas.

From 1969 when his show was picked up for national syndication until leaving the air in 1996, Donahue presided as the unquestioned pioneer of a type of television discussion that for the first time incorporated studio audience interaction as an intrinsic part of the mix. That audience was predominantly packed with women whose opinions were taken seriously. Both “Phil Donahue” and “Donahue” were by design swathed in controversial, issue-driven topics. He was the first to give voice to gay rights activists, feminists and antiwar protestors as well as abortion rights advocates and opponents.

Many people who think of Phil Donahue, the pioneering talk show host who died on Sunday at 88, may conjure the caricatured image as played by Phil Hartman on Saturday Night Live in the early 1990s: roving around his set with a mic, interrogating his weeping guests at machine gun-pace, rolling his eyes and barking at audience members’ insipid questions.
