The Office's Cancelled Spin-Off Would Have Ruined The Show's Happy Ending
Image
Spin-offs aren't always a good idea. For every "Frasier" or "Young Sheldon," which originated from "Cheers" and "The Big Bang Theory" respectively, there's a "Joey," the follow-up to "Friends" that spectacularly crashed and burned. "The Office" didn't get a spin-off immediately after it ended in 2013, but it almost did — and one of the show's last episodes was a backdoor pilot for the spin-off that never was. It's a good thing it never came to fruition, frankly ... because it would have screwed up the happy ending between main characters Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) and Angela Martin (Angela Kinsey).

The 17th episode of the ninth and final season of "The Office," simply titled "The Farm," was intended as a backdoor pilot — a seemingly bygone practice where showrunners would center an episode around characters and scenarios that they hope will result in a spin-off later. In the episode as it aired, Dwight goes...

Frakes directing debut was Tng season 3, episode 16, "The Offspring," which focused on Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner) and his attempt to create a child. With its compelling premise and heartbreaking ending, "The Offspring" remains one of the most highly-praised episodes of Tng.

Every Dwight Schrute Job On The Office, Explained
Image
Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) is a quintessential member of the Dunder Mifflin workforce in The Office, but his loyalty sometimes sways, and he has many other jobs throughout the sitcom's nine seasons. Dwight is one of the quirkiest characters in The Office, and he's had some of the most engaging storylines in the show, whether it's his on-again, off-again relationship with Angela (Angela Kinsey), his prank-filled feud with Jim (John Krasinski), or his commitment to Michael Scott (Steve Carell). But more than anything else, Dwight takes pride in the fact that he's the best salesperson in the Scranton branch of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company.

Rainn Wilson has had tons of unique roles throughout his career, but his name will always be synonymous with Dwight, as he made the character iconic, perfectly capturing his weird but dedicated strive for success. The part-time beet farmer even built an empire off of a little poker game.

‘The 100’ Prequel and 11 Other TV Spinoff Series Fans Never Got to See
Image
On November 5, more than two years after The CW ordered a prequel spinoff for The 100, news broke the project was officially dead. The proposed spinoff, glimpsed in the 100 backdoor-pilot episode “Anaconda,” would have rewound the action to the time of the nuclear apocalypse that started it all. Of course, this isn’t the first time a highly-anticipated spinoff never got a chance to forge its own path. Here are 11 more nixed offshoots, including several that started (and ended) with backdoor pilots. The Farm Toward the end of The Office, NBC developed a spinoff around Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) running a bed-and-breakfast out of his family beet farm, with Majandra Delfino and Thomas Middleditch playing the character’s siblings. NBC passed on the project in October 2013, but viewers saw what could have been in the Season 9 Office episode of the same title. Green Arrow and the Canaries Colin Bentley/The CW This January,...

The Office: The Farm Spin-Off Would Have Wrecked Dwight and Angela’s Ending
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for The Office seasons 1-9.

“Geese and goats and Schrutes and hijinks at the Bed and Breakfast” is how Rainn Wilson, the actor behind The Office‘s Dwight K. Schrute, summed up proposed spin-off The Farm, which never went beyond its pilot episode. Speaking to fans on a Reddit Ama back in 2012, Wilson called the Dwight-focussed show a terrific, weird yet accessible rural family comedy. Had it been ordered to series, it would have told the story of the Dunder Mifflin paper salesman running a 1,600 acre farm and B&b with his brother and sister.

“It would have been a really big hit,” The Farm writer-director Paul Lieberstein told ‘The Office Deep Dive with Brian Baumgartner’ podcast in 2021. Lieberstein was co-showrunner on The Office for seasons five to eight, and played Hr manager Toby Flenderson on the comedy. He told podcast presenter Brian Baumgartner how disappointed he...

Friends with Better Lives: Cancelled CBS Sitcom Pulled
It looks like the short run of Friends with Better Lives just got even shorter. CBS has decided to pull the already cancelled comedy from their schedule effective immediately.

Friends with Better Lives follows the lives of six young people who are at various stages of their lives -- married, divorced, newly engaged, and single -- with each wondering if the others have it better. The cast includes Majandra Delfino, Kevin Connolly, Brooklyn Decker, Rick Donald, Zoe Lister-Jones, and James Van Der Beek.

The network cancelled the show after five episodes had aired but it seemed like they planned to let all 13 installments run. Execs have now replaced future airings with reruns of Mom, a freshman sitcom that's been renewed for a second season.

Friends with Better Lives was the network's highest-rated show last Monday night and has been consistently...

Friends with Better Lives: Cancelled Sitcom to Be Saved?
Yesterday, CBS cancelled Friends with Better Lives after just five episodes. That's a pretty quick decision. The studio thinks it's too quick.

Friends with Better Lives revolves around six young people who are at various stages of their lives -- married, divorced, newly engaged, and single. Each wonders if the others have it better. The cast includes Majandra Delfino, Kevin Connolly, Brooklyn Decker, Rick Donald, Zoe Lister-Jones, and James Van Der Beek.

The sitcom premiered to positive numbers (following the series finale of How I Met Your Mother) but the ratings have fallen quite a bit in subsequent weeks.

The numbers were too low for CBS but 20th Century Fox Television, the studio that produces the show, has decided to try shopping the series elsewhere.

CBS will presumably air the rest of the original 13 episodes so...

Immediately following the series finale of CBS' "How I Met Your Mother" Monday (Mar. 31), the network will debut the sitcom "Friends With Better Lives." The premise of longtime acquaintances in amusing situations -- mainly revolving around their differing relationship levels -- may seem familiar, but it's served up by a fresh ensemble cast merging established TV faces and relative newcomers.

Will (played by "Dawson's Creek" alum James Van Der Beek) is struggling to adjust after his recent divorce; Jules (actress-model Brooklyn Decker) is newly engaged to visibly amorous Lowell (Rick Donald); Kate (Zoe Lister-Jones, "Whitney") is a career-driven serial dater; and the married Bobby (Kevin Connolly, "Entourage") and Andi (Majandra Delfino, "Roswell") observe their friends' allegedly better lives somewhat enviously.

Gratified that sitcom-directing master James Burrows ("The Millers," "Will & Grace") guided the premiere,...

Brooklyn Decker: 'Friends With Better Lives' isn't trying to be another 'How I Met Your Mother'
If Brooklyn Decker was seeking a model role as an actress, "Friends With Better Lives" has come along at the right time.

The "star" of Sports Illustrated's 2010 swimsuit-issue cover has done the occasional screen role in movies ("Battleship," "Just Go With It") and television ("New Girl," "Royal Pains"), but she commits fully as an ensemble-cast member of the CBS sitcom "Friends With Better Lives," premiering Monday (March 31).

There's little question Decker understands her new character well, since the newly engaged Jules is an ex-model and aspiring actress. "When we were shooting the pilot, it was probably the most nervous I've ever been going into a job," the engagingly friendly performer tells Zap2it. 'I was shaking and sweating, and my teeth were chattering.

"The theater I had done, it was in North Carolina doing 'Winnie the Pooh.' It wasn't anything on such a massive scale as filming a multi-camera...

Brooklyn Decker and Zoe Lister-Jones reallllly know how to sell a show.toofab's Brian Particelli scored some face time with the two gorgeous gals to promote their brand new CBS series "Friends with Better Lives" -- where talk turned to "boning" hot guys, "Dawson's Creek," their horrible diets and James Van Der Beek's junk.Yeah, it was definitely interesting! The show, which revolves around a group of friends who all think another one of them has it better, costars Van Der Beek, Kevin Connolly and Majandra Delfino (of "Roswell" fame)."James wears spandex bike shorts all the time, so get ready america," Zoe teases -- with Brooklyn adding "You can see Everything." Sounds like our kind of show!If the series is half as funny as these two are in real life, CBS could have a hit on its hands. The 5 best critic vs. celeb fights at TCA
Brooklyn Decker
Fight! Fight! Fight! We like to think we’re so mature and evolved, but nothing makes our attention perk up and hearts race like an ‘ol fashion school-yard brawl. And this month’s Television Critics Association’s semi-annual press tour provided several tense squabbles between reporters with inquiring minds and panelists with TV shows to promote in a Pasadena hotel ballroom. Here’s our round-by-round guide:

Panel: Investigation Discovery’s Deadly Crime with Tamron Hall

What happened: A perfectly innocuous question turned into a jaw-dropping remark.

Blow by blow: MSNBC anchor Hall was on hand to promote the second season of her Discovery true-crime series.

'Friends With Better Lives' cast: Mixed feelings about shooting with a live studio audience
If you've ever looked at someone's carefully curated social media pages and envied their seemingly perfect life, then you'll understand the concept at the heart of CBS' new sitcom, "Friends With Better Lives."

Creator Dana Klein tells reporters at the 2014 Television Critics Association winter press tour that her show "examines friendship through that 'grass is always greener' lens. We have six people at very different stages of life -- married with kids, newly engaged, divorced, single -- and while they all love each other and they are happy, secretly (and sometimes not so secretly) they wonder if perhaps their friends have it better."

The inspiration for the show came from the time her young daughter met one of her friends from college. "When we met, we were at the exact same place in life. We were both single. We were students at Duke, didn't know what we were going to do with our lives,...

'How I Met Your Mother' Hour-Long Finale Airdate Announced
How I Met Your Mother will wrap up after nine seasons on Monday, March 31 with an hour-long finale narrated by none other than The Mother herself.

'How I Met Your Mother' Finale

From Jan. 13 to March 31, How I Met Your Mother will be on the fast-track to the finale, airing new episodes each Monday except for two due to the Sochi 2014 Olympics. Show co-creator Carter Bays confirmed the date of the last new episode featuring Ted (Josh Radnor), Marshall (Jason Segel), Lily (Alyson Hannigan), Robin (Cobie Smulders) and Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) on Twitter.

Monday, March 31st, 2014. Last #Himym forever.

— Carter Bays (@CarterBays) December 19, 2013

Cristina Miloti, who bravely took on the part of the legendary Mother, could be up for an Emmy for her performance in Himym’s 200th episode. "If she doesn’t get nominated for a guest Emmy for this episode,” said executive producer Craig Thomas,...

'How I Met Your Mother' series finale will air in March
"How I Met Your Mother" will finally fulfill its title with a one-hour series finale on March 31, 2014.

The finale date is a good six weeks before the end of the TV season, but it will allow "Himym" to air almost exclusively new episodes from the time it returns on Jan. 13. The show will air repeats on Feb. 10 and 17 opposite the Winter Olympics, but it will be all new episodes otherwise.

The show started production earlier than usual over the summer, so it should be able to make the early finale date without any problem.

"Himym" will air its 200th episode -- focusing on how the Mother (Cristin Milioti) came to meet Ted (Josh Radnor) -- in late January. The finale will be the show's 208th installment.

Following the "How I Met Your Mother" finale on March 31, CBS will debut its new series "Friends With Better Lives," about a group of...

Brooklyn Decker & James Van Der Beek: La Screenings Lot Party Pals
Taking care of some promotional duties, Brooklyn Decker and James Van Der Beek showed up at the Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution’s 2013 La Screenings Lot Party in Los Angeles last night (May 23).

The “Battleship” babe and the “Varsity Blues” hunk were joined by Majandra Delfino as they milled around the Twentieht Century Fox Studio Lot and mingled with fellow guests.

In a recent interview, James talked about moving past his “Dawson’s Creek” stereotype and getting on with his career courtesy of his recently-cancelled show “Don’t Trust the B- in Apartment 23.”

“It absolutely, I think, took me out of one mold that I'd been in for a while. It's tough to compete with something that was the cultural phenomenon that 'Dawson's Creek' was. It ran for so long. That's a lot of hours playing one character in front of people. So it's natural that they associate you with that.
