Mike Love gave thanks to his late cousin and Beach Boys bandmate and co-writer Brian Wilson during his Songwriters Hall of Fame induction in New York on Thursday night, telling the crowd of fellow writers and industry insiders that “I do feel his presence” in the room as he accepted his honor.
Love’s induction to the Songwriters Hall of Fame came just a day after Wilson died Wednesday at age 82, and 25 years after Wilson himself was inducted into the Hall back in 2000.
“I especially must thank my cousin Brian Wilson,” Love said Thursday. “My first cousin by blood but brother in music, together we set the stage for some of the most successful music collaborations of all time.”
Love was inducted by John Stamos, a famously huge Beach Boys fan who’s collaborated with the band frequently. In his induction speech, Stamos said that Love chronicled “the American dream” with the songs he wrote.

Diddy just spoke out about his ongoing sex trafficking trial for the first time.

The music mogul — who has pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution — addressed those inside the New York City courtroom where he was being tried on May 20 for the first time.
“I love you all,” Combs said aloud as court adjourned for the day, before adding under his breath: “Yeah. Love.”
According to People Magazine, the seemingly despicable human being also turned to a woman in the gallery and said, “Please let Justin know I’m thinking of him,” an apparent reference to his 31-year-old son, Justin Combs.

The great rock-funk-soul band Sly and the Family Stone didn’t just make hits in the 1960s and ‘70s, they made “culture-changing hits,” in the words of no less a figure than record mogul Clive Davis. Hits like “Everyday People,” “Stand!”, “Dance to the Music,” “Family Affair” and “If You Want Me to Stay.”
But if the group released so many incredible songs, why do we remember them now mostly for the personal troubles of bandleader, composer and multi-instrumentalist Sly Stone? Massey will stay on through the end of June. Sony Music hasn’t announced Massey’s replacement but confirmed that there’s a succession plan, and that Arista would remain a standalone label within the Sony system.
“It has been a great honor to spend this chapter of my career back at Sony Music, working with Rob Stringer, a visionary executive for whom I have the utmost admiration, and with the extraordinary Sony family worldwide,” Massey said in a statement. “Having started the label from scratch nearly seven years ago, I am so proud of the achievements of the team at Arista and our great young artists. The life of R&b legend Roberta Flack was celebrated at a star-studded memorial in Harlem, New York’s Abyssinian Baptist Church on Monday, March 10th. Fugees members Ms. Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean made a surprise appearance, performing covers of Flack’s songs.
The duo took on Flack’s classic “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” before delivering Fugees’ version of “Killing Me Softly with His Song,” which launched them into stardom and remains the group’s biggest hit.
As Billboard reports, Hill prefaced their performance with a remembrance of the singer. “We weren’t formally asked to do this because I think they were a little shy in asking us to attend,” she said. “So we kind of bum-rushed the service because it really wouldn’t be possible for us to just stand by and not participate.”

The Recording Academy, which dramatically retooled the run-up to the Grammys amid the Los Angeles-area wildfires and transformed Sunday’s ceremony into a tribute to victims and firefighters, has raised more than $24 million from those efforts, Variety reported. The Trevor Noah-hosted telecast alone raised $9 million.
While there was debate over whether the Grammys would even happen amid the fires, which killed 29 people and destroyed more than 15,000 homes, the Recording Academy decided to have the ceremony go on as scheduled. However, the organization did scale back Grammy Week, limiting it to the MusiCares Persons of the Year Charity Gala honoring the Grateful Dead on Jan. 31, the Special Merit Awards Ceremony and Grammy nominees reception on Feb. 1, Clive Davis and the Recording Academy’s pre-Grammy fundraising event on Feb. 1, and the Grammys main event on Feb. 2.

The Recording Academy and CBS’ decision to turn the 67th Annual Grammy Awards into a fundraising event has paid off. Sunday night’s awards show raised over $24 million for wildlife relief efforts as well as other charitable organizations.
Grammys Sunday alone raised nearly $9 million.
That weekend number included MusiCares’ annual fundraising tribute concert, which took place on Friday night and honored The Grateful Dead, as well as the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Gala on Saturday. Clive Davis once again filled the Beverly Hilton’s international ballroom to the brim with music industry insiders as he presented his pre-Grammy celebration and concert. As always, Saturday night’s show featured a unique mix at the microphone of legends (Joni Mitchell, Barry Manilow), rising stars (Shaboozey, Benson Boone and Teddy Swims) and rock royalty (members of Black Crowes, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica).
But this year’s starry event had a new moniker on the program, billed as an “event” rather than a “gala,” due to the catastrophic Los Angeles blazes that ripped through the city last month. While the wildfires forced a pivot — the typically glamorous affair got scaled back a bit by nixing the red carpet and its crush of press and photographers — and introduced a focus on fundraising via MusiCares, music, as always, remained the start of the show. A loving yet tough-minded documentary about the legacy of Sly Stone, Questlove’s Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius) has more on its mind than charting the rise and fall of another troubled icon. As its title suggests, the film wants to use Stone’s life and career as a jumping-off point for a larger examination of the double standards often levied by society against Black artists deemed “geniuses.” While Sly Lives! makes a strong argument for raising the question, it never fully grapples with the answer. Ultimately, though, it’s on firmer ground when painting a picture of its subject’s specific and one-of-a-kind genius.
Questlove’s rendering of Stone’s inspiring and tragic story is as vibrant and pulse-pounding as could be hoped for. An East Bay-raised music prodigy who could play almost every instrument and was arranging and performing in his family’s church at an early age,...

When Larry Jackson announced the launch of gamma. in March 2023, he instantly made music business history. Although Jackson had a long and storied past as an executive at RCA Records, where he rose through the A&r ranks under the guidance of Clive Davis, and then at Apple Music, where his position as head of content helped the tech giant align with the likes of Nicki Minaj and Drake, his arrival as an independent with funding (Eldridge, Apple, A24 and Alpha Wave Capital invested in the initial seed round) assured the greater entertainment complex would be paying attention.

This year’s Grammy week will be looking a little different, as the show will take place shortly after Los Angeles was devastated by wildfires in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena. Music’s biggest night will mark the first awards show to take place in L.A. since the tragedy began on Jan. 7, and many of the typical Grammy events have been canceled as the usual players — including Spotify and the major labels — redirect resources to aid wildfire relief efforts.

It touched upon Carmen’s childhood in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio, the rise of his power-pop group the Raspberries, their collapse just two years after scoring a massive hit with “Go All the Way,” the creation of his solo classic “All by Myself,” and his decision to largely abandon his career in the Nineties.

The comedian and former Daily Show host, who has emceed the past four Grammy Awards, joins the show as the music celebration is likely to be a more subdued affair in the wake of the Los Angeles wildfires.
The announcement comes a little less than two weeks from when the Grammys are set to take place, later than Noah has been lined up as host in past years.
The Grammys announced last week that they were proceeding with their Feb. 2 awards show date at the Crypto.com Arena, airing on CBS, but the show is set to have a significant fund-raising component to support wildfire relief efforts and will honor the bravery and dedication of first responders.

Not many non-performing contemporary songwriters are quite interesting enough to sustain a 90-minute documentary, but then, not many are Diane Warren, one of the great characters of modern Hollywood. Despite having a self-owned song catalog whose worth is estimated at up to a half-billion dollars, and despite famously having 15 Oscar nominations and a lifetime achievement award, Warren still maintains the aura and attitude of a street hustler, as if every new tune she’s pitching to the studios or the stars is the one that’ll finally catch her a break. You almost have to come up with a whole new multi-hyphenate descriptor to sum her up … something like mogul-urchin.
The new documentary “Diane Warren: Relentless” goes a long way toward first recapping the broad strokes of her story, for those who are encountering her on the late side, and satisfying additional curiosities that may still be held by those...

Spotify’s annual Best New Artist pre-Grammy showcase is the last music event to be canceled in the wake of the Los Angeles fires. And while the 2025 Grammy Awards are still slated to take place at the beginning of February, the three major labels have opted to cancel their Grammy week events.
Universal Music Group, parent company to acts like Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar, announced Monday that all of its Grammy-related events — including its annual artist showcase (typically held the Saturday before as a forum to debut new acts and highlight its Grammy nominees) and its after-party would be canceled. The Santa Monica-based company, whose employees living in nearby Palisades were hit particularly hard, instead said it would be redirecting resources to aid wildfire relief efforts.

As we’ve witnessed with such visionaries as Phil Spector and Sam Phillips, pop record producers can have hugely impactful moments that define an era — but then, as styles and technology evolve around them, never quite regain their footing. Richard Perry, who died Dec. 24 at 82, wasn’t the household name that Spector or George Martin were, but the longevity of his career, especially from the Sixties into the Eighties, was its own type of legacy: Perry left behind a body of work that can now be seen as a roadmap...

Sean "Diddy" Combs' case has opened a lot of suspicious Hollywood connections from Michael Jackson randomly attending his party to some tragic celebrity deaths. Now, he's also being linked with Erik and Lyle Menendez, who are seeking clemency after more than 30 years of incarceration over the murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty.
While the connection isn't as close as Diddy's intimate relationships with his former protgs, it still raises red flags about the entertainment industry. Many believe it isn't a coincidence that the music mogul has this association with the Menendez brothers, who claim to have also been sexually abused by their father. Here's a closer look at Erik and Lyle's Hollywood connections.

Nearly 20 years after his death, it’s easy to forget the ways that R&b legend Luther Vandross impacted pop music. His suavely rhythmic hits, many from the Eighties, don’t get the same amount of airplay as New Wave classics of the same period. It’s also easy to forget how complex and mysterious his life was: For most of his career, Vandross was dogged by rumors about his sexuality and the reasons for his ongoing weight issues. He was both in our faces and behind a curtain at the same time.
