Brian James, Founding Guitarist of The Damned, Dead at 70
Image
Brian James, founding guitarist and principal early songwriter for the legendary UK punk band The Damned, has died at the age of 70.

James’ passing was reported on his Facebook page, with no cause of death listed. The guitarist, who was born in London in 1955, had just turned 70 on February 18th.

Prior to The Damned, James played in the proto-punk bands London SS, The Subterraneans, and Bastard. He formed The Damned in 1976 with singer Dave Vanian, bassist Captain Sensible, and drummer Rat Scabies.

James wrote most of the songs on the band’s first two albums — Damned Damned Damned and Music for Pleasure — including “New Rose,” which is considered the first-ever UK punk single (preceding any releases by The Clash or Sex Pistols). However, he quit the band at the end of 1977, the same year both of those albums were released.

He went on to form the band Tanz Der Youth...

How That All-Star Grateful Dead Tribute Came Together for MusiCares (Exclusive)
Image
Distilling the musical legacy of the Grateful Dead into one night is no small feat, and into three hours is an even taller order. But Don Was — longtime president of Blue Note Records, respected multi-instrumentalist and musical director for the Jan. 31 MusiCares Persons of the Year event — was up to the task, curating an inspired lineup of devotees, including Billy Strings, The War on Drugs, Norah Jones, Dwight Yoakam, Maren Morris, Noah Kahan and Wynonna Judd, and longtime collaborators like John Mayer, Bruce Hornsby and Was himself, who’s a touring member of Bob Weir’s Wolf Bros playing his signature upright bass.

As Was tells it, the set list came together organically, with the artists choosing which songs to play in concert with show producer Rac Clark and MusiCares’ Laura Segura. The end result ran the gamut from the popular (“Truckin’,” performed by Yoakam) to the ambitious (“Terrapin Station...

MusiCares Grateful Dead Tribute Is Big on Laughs (Thank You, Woody Harrelson), Love and Vibes
Image
A hollow, lifeless conference hall at the Los Angeles Convention Center is just about the last place you would expect to find a Grateful Dead tribute concert on a Friday night. But it was there that MusiCares put on a show for the ages, honoring the band at its Persons of the Year gala with founding members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart in attendance (drummer Bill Kreutzmann could not make the trip and delivered a message by video) and a slew of acolytes who understood the assignment.

Typically, the MusiCares dinner is a polite affair, with guests seated respectfully for most of the performances, save the all-star finale, a staple of the event. And that’s not to say that previous Person of the Year recipients — which include Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and Barbra Streisand — didn’t have their own rabid fanbases in attendance. But the Deadheads just do things differently.

MusiCares’ Grateful Dead Gala Full of Good Vibes, Hope for ‘Stronger, Shinier’ Los Angeles

What has rainbow grilled cheese platters, giant dancing bear cutouts, and Woody Harrelson wearing a tie dye tie? The MusiCares’ annual Persons of the Year Charity Gala, where the Grateful Dead are the 2025 honorees (with some “Friend of the Devil” food cake to celebrate.)

“It’s an incredible honor and I’m humbled to stand here tonight,” drummer Mickey Hart told the audience, standing on the Los Angeles Convention Center stage on Friday night. “Because not too long ago, they wouldn’t let us into Disneyland. Our hair was too long.

Drummer Mike Portnoy Performs Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” as He Hears It for First Time: Watch
Image
It’s hard to imagine that anyone hasn’t heard Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” by now, but count Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy among the few humans who’ve somehow avoided the ubiquitous song since its release a decade ago.

As part of Drumeo’s latest “For the First Time” segment, the legendary prog-metal drummer was tasked with playing along to the sugary pop hit as he listened to the song for the first time, making for some highly entertaining content.

In previous editions of the Drumeo series, we’ve seen Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith taking on Thirty Seconds to Mars’ “The Kill,” The Police’s Stewart Copeland trying his hand at Limp Bizkit’s “Rollin’,” and Portnoy himself figuring out Tool’s “Pneuma.”

In the new clip, Portnoy (who landed at No. 19 on our list of the 100 Best Drummers of...

The Police’s Stewart Copeland Performs Limp Bizkit’s “Rollin'” as He Hears It for First Time: Watch

Stewart Copeland, legendary drummer of The Police, was tasked with playing along to Limp Bizkit’s “Rollin’ (Air Raid Vehicle)” while hearing it for the first time as part of Drumeo’s popular YouTube series.

Drumeo’s first “For the First Time” episode of 2025 follows acclaimed editions featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith taking on Thirty Seconds to Mars’ “The Kill” in 2023, and Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy figuring out Tool’s “Pneuma” last year, among others. The Smith episode has garnered 20 million views itself.

Copeland, who landed in the Top 10 of Consequence’s 100 Best Drummers of All Time list, was asked by Drumeo host Brandon Toews if he had seen the “For the First Time” series at all, replying, “I saw Chad. How can you not love Chad?”

Toews then started playing “Rollin'” without its drum track for Copeland, who immediately began to play along.

Watch Danny Carey Warm Up for a Tool Show on His Colossal Drum Set
Image
Tool’s Danny Carey is now an active YouTuber, having recently launched his own official channel. For Tool fans, the highlight among his initial videos is a clip of the renowned drummer warming up before one of the band’s gigs this past May.

Filmed from pseudo point-of-view directly above Carey and pointed down, we get a perspective of just how insane his drum kit is, surrounding and encompassing the drummer in a cockpit of shells and cymbals.

The clip also highlights the fact that Carey uses every single one of those many pieces, his limbs flying across the kit as muscle memory takes over. The comparison could be made to an athlete warming up before a sporting event, and playing drums for Tool is certainly physically and athletically demanding, as Carey proves here. There’s a reason why he ranked highly on our recent list...

Francis Ford Coppola Reveals The Movie He Is Most Proud Of … The Answer May Surprise
Image
Francis Ford Coppola has revealed the movie he is most proud of. The answer may surprise some.

In a Q&a session on X (formerly Twitter) today, the legendary filmmaker was asked by one fan: “Out of all the films that you’ve made, which one would you say you are the most proud of having made, or which one do you feel best captures your ideas of film as an art form?”

Few living filmmakers have a catalogue to rival Coppola: The Godfather films, Apocalypse Now and The Conversation, to name a few of his most acclaimed.

But those weren’t his choice today. The filmmaker was torn, but replied: “That’s like asking someone with 7 kids, who’s the best? I love them all, but if scratched deeper I might say Rumblefish”.

Interesting choice for sure. 1983 drama Rumble Fish is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by S.E. Hinton,...

The Police’s ‘Synchronicity’ Box Set Gets Inside the Dysfunction That Fueled an Eighties Classic
Image
In 1983, sometime between the M*A*S*H finale, the shock of seeing Darth Vader’s face, and the Cabbage Patch Riots, the Police issued the year’s music blockbuster. The trio’s fifth and final album, Synchronicity, was almost immediately the best-selling LP released that year.

The record, now octuple platinum, was a cultural force: The New York Times likened it to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band for pairing highbrow conceptualism (can you explain psychiatrist Carl Jung’s 1960 theory of “synchronicity”?) with tunes you could hum (who cares!

A Fan-Favorite PS1 Franchise May Be Hitting Xbox Game Pass Soon
Image
Spyro Reignited Trilogy could be coming to Xbox Game Pass soon, based on its new PC Microsoft Store listing. The acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft made the inclusion of the Spyro series in the Xbox Game Pass subscription seem inevitable. Fans are excited about the potential arrival of other popular Activision-owned franchises like Call of Duty and Crash Bandicoot on Xbox Game Pass soon.

A fan-favorite PlayStation 1 franchise, Spyro the Dragon, may be coming to Xbox Game Pass soon, according to recent speculation. Insomniac Games' original trilogy of Spyro titles was hugely popular upon its release between 1998 and 2000, with the titles being exclusive to the original PlayStation console. These titles underwent the remake treatment, developed by Toys for Bob and published by Activision, and were released across all platforms in 2018 as the Spyro Reignited Trilogy bundle.

A Hip-Hop Pioneer Was Left for Dead: ‘I Thought It Was All Over’
Image
There are several ways to soundtrack a journey back from hell. On a Wednesday afternoon in late November, Jorge Pabón lifts himself out of his wheelchair, props himself up, and scrolls through his iTunes until the right song hits him. “Órale!” he exclaims, as the chugging guitar riffs of “Disposable Heroes,” Metallica’s adrenaline-pumping war epic, fill his own personal purgatory: the unassuming physical therapy gym inside New Franklin Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Queens, New York. He clasps his hands on the arm bike and propels bicycle pedals with his hands.

No Equal – The Rise and Rise of Denzel Washington
Banco à Las Vegas (1977)
After multiple Oscars, Silver Bears, Golden Globes, Grammys and a Tony, Denzel Washington has earned the right to be called one of the greatest actors of our time. He could drop the surname and still be instantly recognisable – two syllables that guarantee acting excellence.

Key to his success is his ability to mesmerise an audience into seeing past his instantly recognisable face and observing only the character. It’s arguably the central tenet to any actor’s success, yet it is with unusual success and consistency that Denzel Washington has been able to shift from character to character seemingly with ease. This is an actor who rarely repeats himself.

The need for variety and the consistency of execution makes his sole franchise role all the more intriguing. Today sees the digital premiere for the third entry in The Equalizer series, with his Training Day director Antoine Fuqua ending the trilogy...

Stewart Copeland Announces New Book Police Diaries
Image
Stewart Copeland, founding drummer of The Police, will document his band’s humble beginnings in his upcoming book Police Diaries.

Out October 26th, Police Diaries is billed as “the band’s truest account of their early days.” It compiles scans of original diary entries written during The Police’s “starving years” between 1976 and 1979, supplemented with new commentary to give those candid accounts some context. It’s all fleshed out with a series of photos, including some never-before-published.

Police Diaries is available to pre-order now in three different editions: Standard, which includes just the book; Signature, which includes a signed copy and a bonus demo CD; and Ultimate, which features a vintage-bound hardback, a Giclée print, and more. Armenian Celebrities Rally To Support Homeland In Nagorno Karabakh Dispute
Image
The Los Angeles Armenian American community is ramping up its public concerns over an international regional conflict between ethnic Armenians and Azerbaijan.

Last week, a protest blocked the southbound 101 in downtown Los Angeles after Azerbaijan resumed military attacks on an enclave where roughly 120,000 ethnic Armenians live. Thousands have fled their homes, according to Human Rights Watch, which added that most cannot flee because Azerbaijan had sealed the border.

The enclave in dispute is known as Nagorno Karabakh. Azerbaijan has laid claim to the land, which is at the heart of the dispute.

The recent escalation has raised concerns from several prominent Armenian voices from the entertainment community.

For Grammy Award winning Serj Tankian and Cher, and TV star Kim Kardashian, a crisis in a little-known region is not just a humanitarian disaster in a faraway land.

Using their star power, the three are elevating the plight of the vulnerable population...

Image
Since its very first entry, the Spyro series has cemented itself in the gaming world as one of the hallmark examples of what a platformer should be. Originally created by Insomnia Games, the first three games in the franchise were given new life through developer Toys for Bob, which released The Spyro Reignited Trilogy. This month, Spyro is celebrating its 25th anniversary, with a myriad of celebrations planned both by Toys for Bob and fans themselves.

The critically-acclaimed Reignited Trilogy helped to introduce a whole new generation of players to the purple dragon with the added benefit of improved graphics and new mechanics. Composed by Stewart Copeland - former drummer for The Police - the soundtrack of Spyro has also become famous in its own right. Copeland made dozens of tracks for the series' many environments over the course of several years, crafting music that's still appreciated today.

In an interview with The Guardian, Coppola said that he considers Rumble Fish, a 1983 film based on the novel by S.E. Hinton, to be his “best film” .

Rumble Fish is a stylized black-and-white film that stars Matt Dillon, Mickey Rourke, Diane Lane, and Dennis Hopper. It tells the story of Rusty James (Dillon), a young gang leader who idolizes his older brother, the Motorcycle Boy (Rourke), a former gang leader who has returned from California. The film explores the themes of youth, alienation, violence, and brotherhood, as Rusty James tries to live up to his brother’s reputation and cope with his own identity crisis.

Norwegian satire ‘Power Play’ triumphs as six-day Canneseries wraps
Image
Bargain, Carthago, Curduroy’ among big winners.

Norwegian political satire Power Play was named best series as the sixth annual Canneseries (April 14-19) came to a close on the Riveria.

The series from Norway’s Nrk was the last of the 10-strong competition titles to screen at the six-day event, but triumphed with the festival’s top prize in addition to the award for best music that jury member and The Police drummer Stewart Copeland called “downright revolutionary”.

Power Play is based on the true story of the bid to become prime minster by pro-abortion ecologist politician Gro Harlem Brundtland in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

Norwegian Political Satire ‘Power Play’ Wins at Canneseries, as ‘Bargain,’ ‘Carthago’ and ‘Corduroy’ Also Scoop Awards
Image
Norwegian political satire “Power Play” proved unbeatable at Canneseries, just like its headstrong protagonist, picking up awards for best series and music.

The show, focusing on Norway’s first female Prime Minister, Gro Harlem Brundtland, and starting out in the 1970s, turned out to be a timely proposition, as noted by showrunner Johan Fasting, who co-wrote with Silje Storstein and Kristin Grue.

“It’s hard to persevere in politics, especially for women. We wanted to go behind the scenes of social democracy as well, see how it has dissolved and turned into what we have today. It felt like the right time to look at the mechanisms of power,” he told Variety earlier this week.

While the show delves into local politics, its youthful “punk” attitude and humor, which already drew early comparisons to the works of Armando Iannucci, seems to have paid off, seducing jurors Lior Raz, Zabou Breitman,...

Image
World premieres of Prime Video’s Rachel Weisz-starrer “Dead Ringers,” Paramount+’s “Fatal Attraction, with Lizzy Caplan, and Joshua Jackson, and Netflix’s awaited French bio “Tapie” pack out a 6th Canneseries which boasts its biggest U.S. presence yet, with titles from nearly all the major global streamers.

In all, the main Competition features seven world premieres, Lewi said at a Paris lineup presentation on Tuesday.

Hear the Police’s Humble Beginnings on Stewart Copeland’s Rare ’Clown’s Revenge’ Demo
Image
The set list for the Police’s first concert consisted of seven songs, and drummer Stewart Copeland estimates they got through all of them in about six minutes. “We were fast,” he says. With the exception of “Landlord,” which Sting cowrote, and a cover of the Animals’ “It’s My Life,” Copeland tells Rolling Stone the songs were “all my concoctions.”

One of the set list’s curiosities is “Clown’s Revenge,” a charging prog-punk hybrid that sounds a bit like what X was doing around the same time in L.

Drummers Reflect on Their Art in Doc 'Let There Be Drums!' Trailer
Image
"I get to play it, and you get to listen to it – this instrument, this thing, this Force!" Greenwich Ent. has revealed an official trailer for an inspiring documentary film titled Let There Be Drums!, made by music doc filmmaker Justin Kreutzmann – who has years of experience in the music industry as he's the son of Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann. The film is a documentary about drummers, now being released in honor of the late Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters, who is interviewed in this film before he passed away. The world's greatest drummers all reflect on the art of drumming and how it has shaped their lives - including the nature of how music passes from generation to generation, and the role that drumming plays in human life. Featuring interviews with Ringo Starr from The Beatles, Stewart Copeland from The Police, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann from Grateful Dead,...

‘Let There Be Drums’ Director on How Taylor Hawkins Transformed the Documentary
Image
Justin Kreutzmann set out to make a standard documentary about drummers. After all, having Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann as his dad meant growing up on the road surrounded by rock stars and hippies. But once he started interviewing musicians for the film, named after the iconic Sandy Nelson composition “Let There Be Drums,” Kreutzmann stumbled upon something much more personal, leading him to “begrudgingly” come out from behind the camera and talk about his own upbringing.

“Let There Be Drums” is not a Grateful Dead documentary, and Kreutzmann says “you don’t have to be obsessed with drumming” to enjoy it. Through archival footage, interviews with musicians and their loved ones, and, of course, music, the film uses drumming as a vehicle to tell a more universal story — about community, resilience and family.

Speaking with Variety ahead of the doc’s release, Kreutzmann detailed the filmmaking process behind “Let...

Image
Exclusive: Indian Two Time Grammy Award composer and environmentalist Ricky Kej has signed to compose the original music for American-Bangladeshi writer-director Asif Akbar’s spy action-thriller Mr-9 featuring Frank Grillo as a villain.

Based on the popular Masud Rana novels written by late novelist Qazi Anwar Hussain, top Bangladeshi actor Abm Sumon stars as secret agent Rana – code name Mr-9 – of the Bangladesh Counter Intelligence Agency. Grillo plays his evil nemesis, Roman Ross.

The film was shot over the summer in the U.S. and Bangladesh and is now in post-production.

“I take on very few motion pictures and I am very proud to be a part of Mr-9,” said Kej. “Asif has not only made a fantastic, edge-of-the-seat, action thriller with heart but also we finally have an international spy who looks like us… and is South Asian.”

North Carolina-born, Bangalore-raised Kej has distinguished himself on the international music...

The Police ‘Every Breath You Take’ reaches one billion YouTube views
Image
The Police’s “Every Breath You Take” music video has surpassed one billion streams on YouTube.

The 1983 single features on the band’s last album Synchronicity, and is one of their most revered tracks.

It was so successful that after reaching No.1 in the UK Chart, it remained there for over a month. It was also the only track by The Police to reach No.1 in America. The song has since also racked up over one billion streams on Spotify.

In the black and white video, the three-piece band can be seen playing in a large room lit with a big window, with silhouettes appearing throughout. Frontman Sting is central to the video and plays the double bass while singing.

Despite its 1980s release, the video for the song was only uploaded 12 years ago – meaning it has achieved the impressive milestone in this short time. It is the 225th video to reach one billion views.

“I’m listening to ‘Photograph’ by Def Leppard,” Hawkins adds. “You could kill that one.”

A personal request from the legend himself. #TaylorHawkins my friend, my idol…. My neighbor. Growing up on a farm I never could see the light of another house nearby, but living by Taylor for the years that I did out in LA were some of the most fun times of my life.
