Rebel Wilson is living her rockstar dreams!

The 45-year-old actress surprised fans at Reading Festival when she appeared on stage with The Kooks on Friday (August 22) in Reading, England.

At the festival, Rebel‘s appearance was announced by The Kooks’ frontman Luke Pritchard who said, “We’d like to film a scene of a movie with you… so we’d like to welcome to the stage the incredible, the unbelievable, the hugely successful, famous, beautiful popstar, Tazi Young… otherwise known as Rebel Wilson!”

Rebel said the appearance was planned only hours in advance. Since she was too nervous to sing one of The Kooks’ own songs, she decided to cover a 90s hip-hop hit instead.

‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Is Putting His Smithsonian Exhibit on Pause Pending Trump Takeover
Image
President Donald Trump plans to perform a “comprehensive review” of the materials and exhibits in the eight museums of the Smithsonian Institution in order to ensure that the national educational organization is in line with his values and his interpretation of our national history. Hopefully, Trump isn’t a huge Coolio fan.

Founded in 1846, the Smithsonian Institution has long served as a nonpartisan national museum group that doesn’t belong to any three branches of the federal government, but instead serves the entire American population through the preservation of and research into our shared history and culture. If Trump manages to overhaul one of America’s most important cultural achievements to fit his narrow, uneducated and prejudiced worldview, what was once a source of national pride will become a parody of an educational institution — and we’ll even lose our best parodies, too.

In a recent interview with Vulture, beloved...

‘Beyond The Gates’ Spoilers: Carlivati Joined Btg Writing Team At Michele Val Jean’s Request

As a significant member of the soap’s writing team, the drama, plot twists, romance, and excitement, not to mention the snappy dialogue, have proved invaluable, with Carlivati’s signature style all over it.

Carlivati joined the writing team at Beyond the Gates shortly after exiting from his role as head writer at Days of Our Lives in April 2025. He was replaced by new head writers, Paula Cwikly and Jeanne Marie Ford.

Don McLean Says Weird Al’s Cover of ‘American Pie’ Is ‘Better Than the Original’
Image
There are exactly two types of music fans in America, and the easiest way to figure out which type you are is to complete the following lyric: “A long, long time ago…”

Despite the fact that parody is a protected form of free speech in these United States, the greatest parody artist in American history, Alfred Matthew “Weird Al” Yankovic, makes a point to try to secure the blessing of every A-list artist whose biggest hits he satirizes. Over his nearly 50-year career, Weird Al has earned the approval of music industry titans such as Michael Jackson and Madonna, but, arguably, his biggest accomplishment might be how he didn’t just secure Don McLean’s permission to parody his iconic 1971 folk rock anthem “American Pie,” but he even convinced the songwriting legend that Buddy Holly was a lesser inspiration than Anakin Skywalker.

In a recent comment to Billboard for their cover story about Weird Al,...

12 Hit Songs You Might Not Know Were Written for Movies
Image
When you think of songs written specifically for movies, you probably think of one of two things. First, songs from borderline-or-full-blown musicals that then became huge in their own right, like “Shallow” from A Star Is Born or “The One That I Want” from Grease. The other is god-awful songs about whatever’s happening in some terrible movie that are usually a lowlight of an artist’s catalogue, like Eminem’s “Venom.”

Occasionally, though, a song that was meant to serve as a complement to a movie becomes an unmitigated success in its own right, sometimes even eclipsing the lasting power of the movie itself.

Here are 11 legitimate hit songs you might not realize were written for a movie…

[subtitle]11‘Iris’ by the Goo Goo Dolls[/subtitle]

The Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” is an absolutely iconic part of the late 1990s cultural landscape. Much more so than the movie it was actually written for,...

Why a Shockingly Dark Muppet Show Was Pulled From the Airwaves
Image
Even all these years later, people still love the original 1970s Muppet Show — with the exception of all of those episodes featuring “negative stereotypes,” and also that one where the guest hosts were a creepy as hell mime couple.

But there is seemingly less affection for Muppets Tonight, the ‘90s Muppet Show reboot that aired for just two seasons (first on ABC and then the Disney Channel). In its defense, Muppets Tonight was the only TV show that gave us legendary comedian Don Rickles dressed as Kermit the Frog and Coolio dressed as Steve Urkel in the same episode.

Weirdly, one episode of Muppets Tonight ended up being more controversial than the later series in which Fozzie Bear dates a human woman, and was yanked from the schedule to avoid offending the public. The 1996 episode featured host Sandra Bullock appearing in a variety of typically wacky Muppet sketches, including comedic riffs of her own films,...

A Jurassic Park Fan Edit Reveals What Scientifically Accurate Raptors Would Look Like
Image
Dinosaurs have changed since we were kids. Having a four-year-old son means I've recently delved back into the world of these prehistoric beasts, much to the delight of my inner child and the dismay of my wife. I'm here to tell you that we've been lied to. Not intentionally, of course. But it turns out scientists just didn't have all the facts when '90s kid were busy growing up on "Jurassic Park."

If you happen to be one of those kids, you'll surely be slightly taken aback to find out that T-rex was not, as Steven Spielberg would have had us believe, entirely covered in scales, but at least had some feathers. More specifically, as The New York Times reported in 2019, T-rex are now thought to have had patches of feathers "for display." What's more, all the way back in 2007, a study confirmed for the first time that Velociraptors were also feathered dinosaurs,...

Sonic the Hedgehog 3: We interview Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter & more!
Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz in Sonic, le film (2020)
Growing up as a fan of video games, I never thought I’d live to see the day when Sonic The Hedgehog would become a box office star and a household name (especially in the years when the “Blue Blur” had all those bad 3D outings). It felt like it was yesterday when we got that awful first trailer with Coolio’s Gangsta Paradise with Sonic himself having that horrendous design. Then when the internet rightfully so lost their damn minds, Paramount and Sega actually listened to us fans!

Sonic is a character that on paper Should Not Work but somehow Paramount Pictures made it work. And I have been a diehard fan of the films from the jump. So fast forward to now when Paramount Pictures reached out to us here at JoBlo I was stoked at the opportunity to attend the premiere at the AMC Theater in New York City.

Ryan Reynolds Imagined as Fry in Live-Action Futurama Concept Trailer
Image
A fan-made concept trailer has been made imagining a live-action adaptation of the animated series Futurama. Brie Larson and Ryan Reynolds are among the cast members picked for the concept trailer.

Posted by Multiverse of Movies on YouTube, the trailer has garnered more than 444K views in just over a week's time. The concept trailer was created with the use of AI-generated imagery using the likenesses of famous actors. While this makes the character older in the film than he was in the animated show, Philip J. Fry was cast with Deadpool & Wolverine star Ryan Reynolds, whose voice has also been replicated as the narrator. Brie Larson is also imagined in a major role as Leela, complete with one eye. The full video can be seen below.

Joel Schumacher Wanted This Hollywood Heavyweight As Scarecrow For Batman & Robin Sequel
Image
"Batman & Robin" was so panned for its campiness that Warner Bros. had no choice but to pivot to a dark and gritty reboot, resulting in Christopher Nolan's acclaimed "Dark Knight" trilogy. This is filmmaking mythology almost as well-known as Batman's own origin of alleyway orphaning. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige even calls "Batman & Robin" one of the most important superhero movies, for it taught studios that fans wouldn't settle for schlock. In hindsight, it's almost unbelievable that "Batman & Robin" and "Batman Begins" premiered only eight years apart; the Dark Knight's fall didn't last long!

There were abandoned plans for director Joel Schumacher to make a third Batman film, though. "Batman Unchained," to be penned by Mark Protosevich (rather than previous screenwriter Akiva Goldsman) was supposedly going to be "darker." The villains would've been Jonathan Crane/The Scarecrow and Harley Quinn, which makes sense. At the time,...

Futurama Just Introduced The Show's Weirdest Celebrity Cameo Yet
Image
Futurama has had some strange celebrity cameos, but the series may have just introduced its strangest celebrity cameo yet. Much like its sister show The Simpsons, Futurama has always been full of celebrity cameos, with many episodes featuring stars of all different types. Hulu's Futurama revival has continued this celebrity cameo trend, and while many of these have continued to be strange, season 12, episode 6 may be considered the strangest.

Futruama's celebrity cameos have always been uniquely fun, as the show's worldbuilding allows them to be pulled off in a unique way. In Futurama's 31st Century timeline, most celebrities have had their heads preserved in jars, meaning that many Futurama celebrity cameos actually play themselves. While this isn't always the case, with stars like Coolio voicing original characters like Kwanzaa-Bot, the disembodied heads have allowed for some pretty unique celebrity storylines.

Matthew Perry’s Alleged Ketamine Dealer Once Directed a Kids’ Movie and Produced ‘Surreal Life’
Image
Among the five people arrested in the Matthew Perry overdose death investigation were a local physician and the actor’s live-in assistant. Then there was Erik Fleming, listed as the TV star’s “acquaintance,” and charged as a middleman in the deadly ketamine scheme.

The Department of Justice described Fleming’s activities as that of a drug dealer, coordinating with Perry’s assistant and Jasveen Sangha, the so-called Ketamine Queen. According to the DOJ, “after discussing prices with [co-defendant Kenneth] Iwamasa, Fleming coordinated the drug sales with Sangha, and brought cash from Iwamasa to Sangha’s stash house in North Hollywood to buy vials of ketamine.” On Oct. 24, 2023, four days before Perry’s death, Fleming at one point informed the assistant that the ketamine was “on its way to our girl,” in reference to Sangha.

Fleming, 54, pled guilty on Aug. 8 to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine and one count of...

The Best Action Scene In Deadpool & Wolverine Recalls The Classic X-Men Arcade Game
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Deadpool & Wolverine."

It's 1996 and one of your classmates is having a birthday party at the local roller rink. Sitting in the locker room, there's a stale scent of sweaty socks and recently used toilet stall lingering in the air, so you quickly shove your feet into your black and purple Variflex rollerblades with neon green laces and wheels, frantically trying to unbunch your too-thick white tube socks so you can hit the rink. As you make your way, you pass by the snack area where your friends are chasing each other in circles with overly syrupy slushies and corresponding brightly colored tongues.

The sugar high has inspired a symphony of roller-bladed feet clomping around, high-pitched screaming, and uproarious laughter that could pierce the sound barrier. Parents are chatting and flirting, sneaking mini-bottles of liquor into their fountain sodas in styrofoam cups and paying no...

“Elektra arc was weird..the studio wanted romance”: Ben Affleck Still Owns One of the Lowest Rated Marvel Movies But Its Director’s Cut Will Change Your Mind
Image
21 years ago, 20th Century Fox released Daredevil, where Ben Affleck donned the red suit to face off against icons like Michael Clarke Duncan as the formidable Kingpin and Colin Farrell’s menacing Bullseye, with Jon Favreau delivering heart as the loyal Foggy. Despite a shaky reception from critics & a modest box office triumph of $179 million, which set the stage for Jennifer Garner’s subsequent solo venture Elektra, Daredevil remains a remarkable topic of discussion.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner in Daredevil (2003) | 20th Century Fox

But did you know that in 2004, those bitter opinions began to turn with the release of a grittier, R-rated director’s cut? This version injected a new lease of life into the franchise, earning nods for its balanced narrative and garnering a more positive critical response, with a striking improvement acknowledged by fans and pundits alike. So much so that admirers are still raving about the 2003 film’s revised cut.

‘Jeopardy!” Fans Call Out Ken Jennings For ‘Messy’ Show

On Wednesday, Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings watched former Survivor player Drew Basile win the competition in a landslide over Adriana Harmeyer, who was on a 15-game winning streak, the longest of the season so far. The next day, Basile won again., but this time around, fans complained about a “messy” game.

Here is what Jeopardy! fans are not happy about, and what happened that caused the frustration.

Jeopardy! Fans Call Out Ken Jennings After Rough Game

Jeopardy! pre-records and edits its episodes for television. That makes it surprising when bad mistakes make it on the air. That happened on Thursday’s episode. The game had to come back and cancel an answer originally declared right, but it once again showed no consistency.

On Thursday’s episode, newcomer Bob Longstretgh, a Superior Court judge from San Diego, California, gave an answer to a “What is Wimbledon” question.

Here is what Yogesh said to Ken Jennings, and how the Jeopardy! host got back at him for it.

Yogesh Corrects Ken Jennings On Camera

Yogesh was competing in Jeopardy! The Masters when he stopped host Ken Jennings and corrected his pronunciation of a word. The word was “Everest.”

The clue was: “In 1823, this eponymous man was elevated to superintendent of the survey of India.” When Yogesh answered “Everest,” he pronounced it as “Ee-ver-est.” Ken said that Yogesh was right and pronounced it as “Ever-est.” Yogesh immediately fired back, “He pronounced it Ee-ver-est.”

Bobcat Moretti review – heartfelt boxing underdog tale goes down the signpost route
Despite evident passion from the film-makers, this personal transformation through sporting achievement story borders on parody

Traditionally, genre labels gave a broad sense of what kind of experience you might be in for, whether horror, comedy or action. In the streaming era, things are much more specific, with platforms such as Netflix offering ever more niche microgenres: “Cynical Comedies Featuring a Strong Female Lead” for example, or “Classic Feelgood Opposites-Attract Movies”. Bobcat Moretti feels tailor-made for this kind of categorisation. Here we have an “Inspirational Personal Transformation Following Tragic Life Event Sports Movie”, in which a man with multiple sclerosis takes up boxing as part of an effort to turn his life around after a horrific family tragedy.

The passion and commitment of the film-makers are evident. Starring as the eponymous Bobcat, Tim Realbuto also co-wrote the script (with director Rob Margolies) and lost 70kg (11st) during the course of making the film.

How Coolio's Kenan & Kel Theme Song Totally Captured The '90s
Image
Coolio's iconic theme song for Kenan & Kel defines 90s pop culture with catchy beats and nostalgic references. Kenan & Kel's mature humor and Coolio's involvement set it apart from other kids' sitcoms of the time. Coolio's '90s legacy includes memorable TV cameos, with Kenan and Kel recalling his funny appearance on All That.

The Kenan & Kel theme song is a memorable tune thanks to Coolio's beats and how it captures the essence of the '90s. The Nickelodeon sitcom ran for four seasons and starred Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell as the titular characters. A popular comedy about Kenan's attempts to get rich quickly and Kel's inevitable ruination of his plans, the series has remained in the pop culture conversation longer than other similar shows of the time thanks to Kenan's long career on SNL and the revival of the pair's Good Burger series with Good Burger 2.

The Murderous Futurama Christmas Episode That Fox Initially Banned
Image
By the estimation of "Futurama," Christmas will be celebrated very differently in the early 30th century. For one, festive, decorated fir trees will be replaced with palm trees. Also, the spelling of "Christmas" will officially evolve into "Xmas." Most importantly, Xmas will see the release of a real-life robot Santa Claus, built many years ago to gauge the niceness and naughtiness of the world's children and distribute worldwide gifts accordingly. Sadly, Robot Santa's programming had a glitch, and he now gauges everyone to be naughty, a sin punishable by death. Jolly Old St. Nick now takes to the skies on Xmas armed with missiles and bombs, merrily murdering anyone he sees on the streets. Fearful citizens huddle inside shielded beneath anti-Santa armor, a standard feature of most 30th-century buildings.

This is a wonderfully irreverent concept that blends Christmas imagery with science fiction in a blithe and silly fashion. In his...

Synapse Films have announced a Limited Edition Uhd & Blu-ray Slipcover combo for Mike Mendez’s much-cherished The Convent (a personal fave of mine Fyi).

From its opening massacre, set to the strains of (appropriately enough) Lesley Gore, The Convent is an in-your-face fright film with a full-blooded sense of humor. Director Mike Mendez both embraces and skewers the traditions of supernatural/possession cinema, with wicked twists that upend expectations and deliver jolts and laughs in equal measure. Not for the devout or the easily offended, the film gives Barbeau one of her best roles as the motorcycle-riding, shotgun-wielding Christine, with bonus appearances by fellow genre icon Bill Moseley (The Devils Rejects) and rapper/actor Coolio. The Convent rocked audiences at festivals including Sundance and Fantasia, but has long been unavailable on disc. Now you can possess its uncensored U.S. debut remastered in Dolby Vision 4K from the original uncut...

John Dimaggio Had A Star Wars Legend In His Corner During His Futurama Pay Dispute
Image
In the 31st century of Matt Groening's and David X. Cohen's "Futurama," Christmas has evolved. Instead of fir trees, for instance, people decorate palm trees. Gift exchanges are still common, but families don't merely gather together to enjoy the warmth of the holiday season. They gather together because a rogue robotic Santa Claus, judging the entire world to be "naughty," annually flies around the Earth murdering anyone outdoors with guns and missiles. Families gather out of fear. Robot Santa was initially played by John Goodman, but the role was taken over by John Dimaggio after his first appearance.

Eventually joining Robot Santa in his holiday shenanigans was the Kwanzaa-Bot played by late rapper Coolio, and, with the release of "Bender's Big Score" in 2007, the Chanukah Zombie played by Mark Hamill. The machinations of the film's plot had all of Earth's denizens stranded at the North Pole of Neptune,...

Good Burger 2 Creative Team Teases a Bigger, Better Sequel
Image
26 years after the original cult classic comedy Good Burger, Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are getting the band back together for its eagerly anticipated sequel, Good Burger 2. Directed by Phil Traill and co-written by original movie screenwriters Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert, the sequel has Thompson's Dexter reunite with perennially cheerful Good Burger employee Ed to take on the villainous MegaCorp. The film, dedicated in honor of the late Coolio, Abe Vigoda, and Ron Lester, heightens the fast food mayhem as the Good Burger employees face an even more sinister corporation in an all-out fast-food battle.

In an exclusive interview with Cbr at New York Comic-Con 2023, Good Burger 2 director and executive producer Phil Traill and screenwriters and executive producers Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert shared the lengths the production went to recapture and elevate the world of the 1997 original film, revealed how it felt reuniting with the Good Burger cast,...

Jada Pinkett Smith Comments on Arrest in Late Friend Tupac Shakur's Murder Case
Image
A major update in the Tupac Shakur murder case has an old friend of his speaking out.

Back in high school, Shakur happened to be friends with Jada Pinkett Smith, and the two future-celebrities would go on to respectively find fame as a rapper and actor. Their friendship had also been portrayed in the 2017 biopic All Eyez on Me, with Demetrius Shipp Jr. as Shakur and Kat Graham as Pinkett Smith. It all came to an end in 1996 when Shakur was gunned down in Las Vegas, the target of a drive-by shooting that had since been unsolved.

Futurama Teases How It Shares a World With Disenchantment
Image
The following contains spoilers for Futurama Season 8, Episode 6, "I Know What You Did Next XMas," now streaming on Hulu.

Futurama has played with the apocalypse on multiple occasions. Thanks to its distant future setting, the show has hinted at multiple ways humanity could collapse and rebuild itself. The latest hint at this cyclical existence goes a step further and quietly cements another show as part of Futurama's lore.

"I Know What You Did Next XMas" -- Written by Ariel Ladensohn and Directed by Crystal Chesney-Thompson -- features a clever reference to one of Matt Groening's other animated properties, Netflix's Disenchantment. Notably, this direct reference suggests that the fantasy comedy is actually set in the distant future of Futurama's world. On top of seemingly confirming the shared universe between the two shows, it follows up a reoccurring element of Futurama's timeline.

Is Futurama Kid Friendly?
Image
American Animation struggled to shake its status as kids-only content for decades. The easy appeal of talking animals is often too much to resist, and Disney's enduring popularity reinforces the notion that all cartoons are children-friendly with every new crop of films. Matt Groening helped change that with The Simpsons by introducing an entire generation to the idea that simply drawn cartoons could appeal to people old enough to vote. It was groundbreaking, and it continued into Groening's cult classic, Futurama, which further widened the scope of what animation could accomplish.

In the current decade, adult animation is nothing new, thanks to the proliferation of Japanese anime and subsequent popularity of shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force. In contrast, Futurama looks far more family friendly than it first appeared, even as it endures over the years. It's raised the question of whether it's acceptable material for kids or not. Mileage may vary by individual,...

Hulu's Futurama Features Final Rap and Special Tribute for Coolio
Image
Futurama paid tribute to late rapper and actor Coolio with the latest episode of Hulu's reboot.

Last year, Coolio, who voiced Kwanzaabot in the original Futurama, passed away at the age of 59. It was revealed at the time that he'd recorded new dialogue for the Futurama revival, and his episode was the latest to premiere. The episode, "I Know What You Did Next Xmas," included Coolio's return as Kwanzaabot, complete with a new rap song. The character was then shown riding off into space with a message of tribute on the screen reading, "In memory of Coolio."

Coolio Delivered One Last Kwanzaa-Bot Rap for Final Futurama Appearance: Watch
Image
It’s been almost a year since Coolio tragically passed away, but thanks to Futurama, fans get to hear a brand new song from the pioneering rapper. Coolio’s character, Kwanzaa-bot, made a final appearance in the latest episode of the show’s 11th season, in which he delivered a fresh rap about the holiday season, Futurama style. Watch the animated video of the song below.

The song comes at the very end of the episode, with lyrics detailing Kwanzaa-bot’s “Futurama Xmas list for 3023” and addressed to Santa-Bot himself. Kicking things off with the warning that he’s “about to get nice,” Coolio delivers a delightful list of everything the Kwanza-explaining robot is wishing for, including “12 Slurms a-slurping/ 11 Benders burping/ 10 episodes dropping/ Nine Scruffys mopping,” and more.

Coolio continues with references to characters like Leela, Zoidberg, and Kwanzaa-bot’s Jewish counterpart, Chanukah Zombie. Then, he finishes things out by...

"In Memory Of Coolio": Futurama Season 11's Actor Tribute Explained
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Futurama season 11, episode 6

Futurama season 11, episode 6 pays tribute to the late rapper Coolio, who voiced the character of Kwanzaa-Bot, in a moving dedication. The episode "I Know What You Did Next Xmas" returns to the Robot Santa-centric storytelling of earlier seasons, providing a major role for Kwanzaa-Bot and leading to a poignant in-memoriam message at the end. Coolio, known for his distinctive voice and hits like "Gangsta's Paradise," appeared in three episodes of Futurama and had a successful acting career in movies and TV shows outside of the show.

After a fun festive adventure, Futurama season 11, episode 6 ended with a moving dedication to the late rapper Coolio. Futurama’s season 11 revival has largely kept the show’s tone relatively light. A few of the season’s episodes tugged at the heartstrings of viewers, but none of them were outright devastating. Futurama’s season 11 revival has not...

Futurama Season 11 Darkly Revives Original Show's Most Heart-Wrenching Moment
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Futurama, season 11, episode 6!

Season 11 of Futurama brings back one of the show's saddest moments, Fry finding the fossilized remains of his dog, Seymour, in episode 6. The episode features a holiday rap parody that references Fry's dead dog, adding a tragic twist to the comedic song. The rap is performed by Coolio, who tragically passed away before the episode aired, making it his final acting appearance and adding to the sadness of the moment.

Futurama is a series full of sad scenes, but season 11 darkly revives one of the original show's most heart-wrenching moments. While Futurama is a comedy at its heart, the story of Fry being a man out of time leads to some pretty depressing storylines throughout the series. However, one Futurama episode in particular stands out as being the show's saddest, and it was just brought back into the mix for Futurama season 11.

Futurama is finally back,...

‘In Memory of Coolio’: Late Rapper’s Final ‘Futurama’ Episode Features Tribute, New Song (Video)
Coolio at an event for Hyper Noël (2002)
The final appearance made by late rapper Coolio in Hulu’s reboot of “Futurama” featured a holiday-themed hip-hop song and a tribute to the musician.

“Yo, Santabot, I’ma drop my ‘Futurama’ X-Mas list for 3023. Y’all ready for this? I’m about to get nice!” Coolio said in a 45-second clip, before running off with his rhymes. “Kwanzaabot, yeah! Gimme 12 Slurms a-slurping, 11 Benders burping, 1o episodes dropping!”

Coolio originally played Kwanzaa-Bot in two previous episodes of “Futurama” in 2001.

While many of Coolio’s fans know him for his hits like “Gangsta’s Paradise” and “C U When U Get There,” he also had a stint in the acting realm, with one of his roles being Kwanzaa-Bot — Santabot’s counterpart — in the newly rebooted “Futurama.” His X-Mas list rap was his final appearance as the character before his death last year. And it’s featured in the episode, “I Know What You Did Next Xmas,...

‘Red Water’ and ’12 Days of Terror’ – Revisiting Two Direct-to-tv Shark Movies from the Early 2000s
Image
People may be surprised to learn that staying out of the ocean won’t guarantee their safety from sharks. In fact, a dip in a river or pond could lead to an encounter with one of the most aggressive sharks in the world: the bull shark. Strangely enough, though, the Carcharhinus leucas doesn’t show up in sharksploitation movies anywhere near as much as its larger and more popular cousin, the great white. Many don’t even know of its existence until they hear of a sighting or attack in an unlikely place.

Jaws led to great whites becoming the face of shark horror. Of course, there are exceptions — Deep Blue Sea features bio-engineered mako sharks, and Syfy went through a period of unleashing one variety of mutant shark after another — yet as a whole, sharksploitation prefers great whites. Then in 2003, TBS Superstation mixed things up by having a bull...

10 Iconic Hip-Hop Songs Written For Movies
Image
Hiring known artists to write music films can be hit or miss. Tying the themes of a song and a film together can sometimes lead to on-the-nose choices or the song feels better suited for the movie than the radio. Other times, like with Dangerous Minds and the late rapper Coolio, it can launch a song into history. Audiences might not know the movie, but "Gangster's Paradise" will live forever.

French Montana on His New Film ‘For Khadija’: ‘The First Doc Is Like Your First Album’
Image
“For Khadija” is billed as a documentary about French Montana, but there’s a reason that it’s named not after the hip-hop alter ego of Moroccan expatriate Karim Kharbouch, but his mother. “I felt like my mother’s story, the beginning to the end, the closure of her going back to Morocco, is when I was like, okay, now the story has a meaning,” French tells Variety. “This goes out to all the mothers that struggle, that have kids, that was forced to sacrifice.”

Given the other films made about rappers and their families — including “Dear Mama,” about Afeni and Tupac Shakur and “Biggie: I Got a Story to Tell,” which heavily features Notorious B.I.G.’s mother Violetta Wallace — it’s not necessarily an unexpected place to start. But the documentary, which premieres June 16 at the Tribeca film Festival, uses the relationship between Karim and Khadija to highlight the...

Futurama Reboot: What We Expect to See
Image
Planet Express is back in business as the new season of Futurama was confirmed. Hulu’s streaming hub will air 10 episodes of the acclaimed show by The Simpsons’ creator Matt Groening, reviving the series that doesn’t cease to come back. It’s Futurama’s third revival, after a direct-to-video season and a Comedy Central reboot, and the timing couldn’t be more perfect for this hit comedy series. As dystopian TV shows rise as a genre, the not-so-bright 31st century of Futurama has a lot to say about the present time.

There’s already a lot of information about the Futurama reboot. Aside from the cast reprising their roles as Fry, Leela, Bender, and the complete set of colorful characters, the names of the episodes for the eleventh season have already surfaced. Every title is quite suggestive of what the episodes are about, so it’s easy to predict...
