David E. Kelley's unusual primetime drama "Picket Fences" debuted on CBS in 1992, and it was, like a lot of media of the 1990s, an aggressive takedown of the previous generation's tropes. The title, "Picket Fences," was meant to evoke the placid serenity of the post-War Baby Boom, describing a common yard feature in the then-new 1950s suburbs. The series, however, took place in Rome, Wisconsin, a place that was anything but placid. The stories surrounded bleak and sometimes unexplained crimes, and the show regularly tackled sensitive and political topics like abortion, sexual assault, polyamory, and the place of faith in the modern world.
"Picket Fences," with its soapy stories and unusual tone, was clearly a knockoff of (or merely following the trends started by) David Lynch's 1990 series "Twin Peaks." That show also aimed to deconstruct placid 1950s media images with dark violence and surreal mysteries.

The X-Files is a mystery in its own right because not only did it manage to pioneer a new sub-genre of sci-fi in the early '90s, but it also managed to collect an abundance of new fans every day. The show centers around Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, two FBI agents who spend their days uncovering the dark underbelly of the supernatural and strive to bring it to light. Thus, it's easy to say that this show has everything: monsters, aliens, and a ferocious slow-burn romance plot.
Even when the show returned in 2016 for two limited seasons, fans were impressed with how easily David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson were able to slip into their roles again. As such, fans, new and old, often rave about their favorite episodes and discuss why The X-Files had such a big impact on popular culture. However, audiences would be lying if they said...

The release of The Monkey marks a continuation of Stephen King's long and weird film career. Directed by Osgood Perkins, the film reaches far back into King's past for material, now joining the ranks of other King adaptations like Carrie, The Running Man, and The Shining. However, as it turns out, Perkins isn't the first to bring this supposedly untouched short story to life. Kudos to you X-File fanatics who recall the episode “Chinga” in 1998, which used this same plot.
As part of a special series in Season 5, creator Chris Carter recruited some ringers to guest write. The result was an unofficial adaptation of King’s 1980 short story, “The Monkey,” swapping out the cymbal-clutching monkey for a creepy, haunted, Victorian Doll. Perhaps for legal reasons, the story was modified, concealing the origins. But enough of the core elements remain to trace the provenance of "Chinga." That short story is...

Anyone flinging pencils at the ceiling while keeping one eye on the SAG Awards on Sunday night would no doubt have bolted upright at the sight of The X-Filesco-stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, who gave fans an unexpected reunion when they appeared onstage at the Shrine Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles to present an award together.
As reported by The Mirror, the actors presented the award for Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Drama Series, which went to FX's Shōgun, but not before the pair exchanged some back-and-forth banter, reminiscent of their days as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully on The X-Files. Duchovny kicked proceedings off by introducing the award with a quick quip: "'Ensemble,' I believe that's a French word that means: 'Thank God I only have to work three days a week.'"

This reunion was ... out there.
On Sunday, The X-Files stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reunited at the 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards. And they nearly ruined their moment in the spotlight when they opened up the winner's envelope for the Best Drama Ensemble category before ever announcing the nominees.
"Ensemble," Duchovny began after stepping out on stage. "I think that's a French word that means, 'Thank God I only have to work three days a week.' It's great to see you, Gillian. You look ..."
Anderson finished his sentence: "Younger than you last saw me when we shot 218 episodes?"
Duchovny and Anderson talked about "what makes great drama," and then answered at different times, "Timing" and "Chemistry," respectively.
When the audience only gave them a mild chuckle, Anderson shouted, "We still got it! Hilarious! We did that so well."
And Duchovny added, "Let's get out of here as soon as we can.

"Twin Peaks" — David Lynch and Mark Frost's inimitable surrealist-horror series — intrigued and disoriented television audiences when it premiered on ABC in 1990. A heady mix of soap opera parody and dream logic permeates the quaint town of Twin Peaks, whose inhabitants flit between being conscious caricatures and complex, flesh-and-blood characters with vast inner worlds. On its surface, the question of "Who killed Laura Palmer?" haunts the delightfully peculiar episodes of its first season, but the show's procedural garb slowly sheds itself to reveal something unspeakably frightening. And of course, there's the Lynchian aspect of it all, where the show's surreal mythology hones in on spiritual and psychological malaise to examine the root of evil. Every thread connected to Laura and the town itself is unraveled by Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), whose presence feels fated in this story of cyclical trauma.

A show as influential as The X-Files stuck a cord with audiences for a reason. Though Chris Carter's occult series was Fox's dark horse at the time, it quickly appealed to the world. The X-Files introduced archetypal characters that would become beloved to its audience for decades to come. FBI Agent Fox Mulder is a believer in the strange and unexplainable, ever since seeing his sister's apparent abduction by aliens at a young age. Searching for her becomes a lifelong obsession, even when the FBI sends a skeptic, Agent Dana Scully, to keep tabs on his comings and goings.

Fans can thank the chemistry of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as well as the strength of the writing. "The X-Files" was a series that had what is perhaps the platonic ideal of a structure for a scripted TV show. By alternating episodes involving a "Monster-of-the-week" and shows dealing with the series' overarching mythology of conspiracies and extraterrestrial activity, the series managed to be both an Ez-on, Ez-off episodic procedural, a genre anthology show, and a serialized saga that rewarded constant viewing. Thus, longtime fans could feel their investment paying off while new fans could jump on board at just about any point during the show's original 9-season run.
The only detriment to this near-perfect setup is the fact that it invited the possibility of as many low points as it did high ones. While certain sections of the fandom have their general preferences for which overall seasons were best and which weren't, even the most adoring fan of "The X-Files" will admit its propensity to be uneven, with...

With 11 seasons, two movies, and a plethora of spin-off material, there's no denying that The X-Files is a hit. Not only did it transform the modern sci-fi genre, but it also altered how fans see romance arcs as well as female characters. Even after three decades, fans still adore Mulder and Scully.
But with so much content on offer, it makes sense that not every episode will be as successful as others. However, the show is known for being a tad experimental at times, producing a wealth of strange arcs and plot twists. As such, even though fans love this show, there are some episodes that fans find too awful to rewatch.

Even 30 years after its initial release, The X-Files still has a very active fan base. Audiences were quickly charmed by Fox Mulder and Dana Scully's dynamic and were pleased by the amount of special effects that were placed throughout the show. The show also rewards long-time fans by slipping in handfuls of quirky Easter eggs and giving some closure to the agents' slow-burn romance arc. When the show was rebooted back in 2015, it received a similar amount of praise, proving that The X-Files is still one of the best shows in the modern sci-fi genre.
Yet, some audiences are completely unaware that The X-Files had two primetime spin-offs. Because they were mostly aimed at American audiences and are yet to appear on streaming services, The Lone Gunmen and Millennium often fly under the radar of some of the most avid fans. Quick Links Pamela Anderson Was Asked to Play the FBI Special Agent Gillian Anderson Portrays the Innocence of Scully Both Women Have Seen Great Success in Their Careers
The X-Files revolutionized characterization in science fiction. Instead of relying on the same tropes that fans had seen for decades, the show's creator, Chris Carter, was determined to shake things up. As such, fans quickly fell in love with the ever-curious Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. While they still relied on various archetypes, the pair dismantled the typical buddy-cop narrative and offered the audience a new type of slow-burn romance.
Dana Scully is often regarded as an enigma in herself. While other female characters during this time were regarded as meek and helpless, Scully proved that brains are far more powerful than brawn. Aside from inspiring an entire generation of women, Scully showcased that women on screen can be both emotional and headstrong in the right doses.

Following last year's chilling teaser that just barely scratched the surface, Warner Bros. has dropped an action-packed new trailer for Ryan Coogler's upcoming film, Sinners. With this new trailer comes plenty of bloody new details about the story, which centers on twin brothers Elijah and Elias (Michael B. Jordan in dual roles) who return to their hometown in an attempt to escape a troubled past, only to discover a horrible evil that's waiting to receive them.
The new trailer for Sinners introduces a prominent music theme that wasn't featured in the previous trailer, showcasing a guitar that seems to be a key aspect of the film's plot. In the trailer, we hear a character say there are myths about music that can connect the past and the future, and also "pierce the veil between life and death." With that line comes confirmation of a long-standing rumor about Sinners: there are vampires!

Chris Carter's 1993 paranormal investigation series "The X-Files" was one of the defining media outings of its decade. Few shows better captured post-Cold War America's paranoid suspicions about its own government. Without an enemy to fight, and with no wars on the immediate horizon, 1990s America became wary of the systems that caused war and "enemies" to form in the first place. If we could live without them, why didn't the government jettison them earlier? Could it be that the government was up to something sinister?
"The X-Files" manifested that paranoia through Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), two FBI agents assigned to investigate paranormal cases. They frequently met aliens, monsters, psychics, vampires, and other unusual creatures. Sadly, each case usually involved a cover-up or a lack of hard evidence. The series was enough of a hit to last nine full seasons before its cancelation in 2002. "The X-Files...

Very rarely is there a phenomenon as significant as The X-Files. Created by Chris Carter, the series premiered in 1993, vaulting two of the most iconic characters into the cultural zeitgeist. David Duchovny stars as Fox "Spooky" Mulder, an FBI agent who becomes known for his obsession with the occult. His extensive work into unexplainable cases grabs the attention of the bureau, leading them to send down a partner to regulate his activities. They send Dana Scully, a former doctor and fellow agent, to keep them apprised of Mulder's activities. While they have next to nothing in common, their dynamic is the lynchpin of the series and sends every shipper's heart ablaze.
The X-Files lasted for nine seasons before being revived for two additional ones in 2016. The will-they-won't-they dynamic powered the series for almost a decade, and Scully's character became a role model for many young women. But with all its attributes,...

Quick Links Scully’s Relationship With Catholicism Is Constantly Mentioned She Also Experiences Very Intense Visions The Concept of Religion Keeps The X-Files Grounded
When The X-Files premiered in 1993, it quickly differentiated itself from other sci-fi shows. Mulder acted as a true conspiracy theorist, while Scully used her feminine intuition to side with logic and science. Yet fans adored their bond and how these contrasting views allowed them to bounce off of each other. As such, this show pioneered a new subsection of sci-fi and explored the nuances of extraterrestrial life on Earth.
While The X-Files remained true to its otherworldly themes and Monster of the Week structure, it also wasn't afraid to open the viewers' eyes to religion. Admittedly, the references were few and far between, but the concept remains integral to the show as well as the characters. Thus, without religion, it could be argued that The X-Files wouldn't have been as impactful.

Gillian Anderson played the skeptical Dana Scully for nine seasons of The X-Files, one of the popular and influential sci-fi series of the 1990s. She returned to play Scully in a pair of revival seasons in 2016 and 2018, but called it quits after that. In a lengthy conversation with X-Files co-star David Duchovny (Fox Mulder), Anderson explained why she no longer wanted to continue starring in the spooky series after the 11th season ended in 2018.
“The end was problematic," Anderson said on Duchovny's Fail Better podcast. "I mean, it was problematic storyline wise, particularly for [Anderson's character Dana] Scully. And I wasn’t really enjoying the direction that it was heading. It didn’t feel– and yet there was, I didn’t have a voice in it. As much as anything, I felt like I needed to move on to something where I might have more of a voice.”

David Duchovny rose to stardom as maverick FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder on the hit science-fiction series The X-Files. Chris Carter's show was wildly successful and even spawned two movies, but Duchovny's Mulder literally disappeared in Season 7, puzzling and disappointing fans. Charming and determined to uncover the truth, no matter the cost, Mulder was the heart of The X-Files — with his skeptical partner Dana Scully, played by the inimitable Gillian Anderson. Much of the plot, centered on alien abductions and supernatural events, is connected to Mulder and his quest to uncover the mysteries surrounding his sister's disappearance. As such, Duchovny's performance played a huge role in The X-Files — and fans were understandably shocked when the actor left as a series regular at the end of Season 7.

Chris Carter's Millennium may not be the first show that comes to mind when you think of classic Christmas episodes of television, but that's probably because you haven't seen "Midnight of the Century." The tenth episode of the series' spectacular second season, this holiday hour serves as an introspective look at the life of Lance Henriksen's Frank Black as he struggles to come to terms with who he is, where he came from, and what his supernatural "gift" has to offer. Pulling from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, this Millennium tale offers hope at a time of year when many feel hopeless and reminds us that light can be found even within our own personal darkness.

In the world of television, very few shows have achieved cult status like The X-Files has. The American science fiction drama series revolves around FBI special agents David Duchovny’s Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson’s Dana Scully. While at its core is the brilliant dynamic between Mulder and Scully, behind the scenes, there is a stark reality of inequality.

Anderson, apparently, as is a frequent occurrence in the film industry, was paid significantly less than her male co-star and had to fight for equal pay.

The best X-Files episodes combine Monster of the Week tales with alien mythology episodes to further the overarching story of the entire series. Chris Carter created The X-Files in 1993, and the show was an instant success, running for nine seasons before finally ending in 2002. The series stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as two FBI agents who take on cases involving paranormal phenomena. Mulder (Duchovny) is a believer, and Scully (Anderson) is a skeptic.
The series also received two movies and was picked up again for two more seasons in 2016 and 2018. While other FBI agents joined the show when Duchovny left the series, fans mostly focused on Mulder and Scully, and the best X-Files episodes are mostly centered on those two individuals, their relationship, and how they grew and developed as the show wore on. The X-Files star David Duchovny ruminates on his on-set tensions with co-star Gillian Anderson. The pair rose to global fame playing FBI agents Mulder and Scully in Chris Carter's cult science-fiction series. The duo both won Golden Globes for their performances on the show, which has been widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential TV series of all-time. The show ended its initial run with season 9 in 2002, before both stars returned for The X-Files seasons 10 and 11 in 2016 and 2018, respectively.

With Duchovny taking a reduced role in seasons 8 and 9 of the show, his absence from the core story led to conflict between the two, which spilled over into the revival seasons. Chris Carter sat down for an interview to talk about his show’s return in 2016. While there were a lot of things that he had to keep in mind while bringing the show back, an important part of the process was keeping in mind the political climate of the the time, which was late 2015-early 2016.

Chris Carter brought the science fiction drama The X-Files to the Fox screens in 1993 and presented a world of supernatural fiction and mystery. The show revolves around FBI agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, with the latter also being an ardent conspiracy theorist. While Scully is more interested in science and logic, Mulder on the other hand has a complete mistrust in the government and believes that they are always hiding something.

Gillian Anderson opens up to David Duchovny about leaving The X-Files, as the two co-stars share a candid conversation. Anderson and Duchovny are television icons for their portrayals of Dana Scully and Fox Murder, respectively, with their off-screen relationship and thoughts on the series gaining just as much attention as their ongoing saga of aliens and government conspiracies. Anderson had said at one point that she would not want to return for The X-Files season 12, though she has since softened that stance.
In an interview on Duchovny's Fail Better podcast, via Consequence, Anderson reflects on her dislike for Scully's direction in The X-Files season 11. The two-time Emmy winner particularly cites Scully's hyper-focus on her son, William, and becoming a character that lacked agency. David Duchovny said he had a “failure of friendship” with “X-Files” co-star Gillian Anderson when the hit sci-fi series was at its peak in the 1990s.
On a Tuesday episode of his “Fail Better” podcast in which he’s joined by Anderson, Duchovny admitted that he thought the “trickiest” part of their conversation would be addressing what he called his “failure of friendship.”
“There was a long time, working on the show, where we were just not even dealing with one another off-camera,” Duchovny said.
He admitted that he wasn’t sure how the conversation would go when it came to discussing the period when they didn’t speak to each other outside of work.
“There was a lot of tension,” he said. “Which didn’t matter, apparently, for the work cause we’re both f–king crazy, I guess. We could just go out there and do what we needed to do.

One of the earliest episodes of The X-Files season 1, episode 8, Ice was a sly remake of John Carpenter's sci-fi horror masterpiece The Thing. A lot of The X-Files classic standalone Monster-of-the-Week episodes were influenced by iconic horror films. Season 4, episode 2, Home, is a slasher about a murderous family inspired by The Hills Have Eyes and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Season 6, episode 7, Terms of Endearment, subverts the story of Rosemarys Baby with its tale of a demon snatching an unborn child from its mothers womb.

The X-Files helped to pioneer the modern sci-fi genre, using a ton of exceptional special effects to explore the nuances of alien conspiracies. Viewers had the privilege of working alongside the admirable Fox Mulder and Dana Scully as they uncovered the secrets that lie beneath the world's strangest sights. Complete with a wide variety of books, merchandise, and other spin-off material, it's clear that this show struck a chord with its loyal 1990s audience.
Though the vast majority of the show is based on fiction, a portion of its lore is inspired by true events. This is especially evident in Scully's autopsy work and Mulder's knowledge of certain societies and cults. Thus, it could be argued that even though The X-Files does explore a collection of fantastical ideas, the truth is still out there.

"Never believe anything you see on Halloween." That's the Reverend M. Goodman quote that opens up Millennium's second Halloween-themed episode, "...Thirteen Years Later," and instantly sets the mood for this unusual and spooky hour of television. If this were your first foray into the world of Millennium, you'd probably be wondering what a star like Lance Henriksen would be doing on a show like this. Let it be known that, while the Chris Carter-created series did partake in some high strangeness in its three short seasons, no episode is quite like this one. Blending Halloween and B-horror movies with the rock band Kiss is a bit uncanny, no doubt, but this is a ride you'll never forget. As the network's own promotion boasted, "If you like slasher films... You're gonna love this. Blood, guts and music's wildest band. Don't miss one hell of a show."...

Disney's update of The X-Files already has a problem on its hands, and it relates to the characters of Mulder and Scully. Original series Chris Carter first announced Confirmation of an X-Files reboot in 2023, and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is set to be in charge. There was a time in TV history when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were the most radical thing on Saturday mornings, but one of their many knockoffs became the epitome of '90s cringe. Those who lived through the 1980s and 1990s remember when animated mutants, monsters, and colorful costumed crusaders dominated television. While some Tmnt clones managed to find a cult following and discover a niche in toyboxes, others faded into obscurity. Yet, a few of these neon-colored curiosities are worth digging up, serving as time capsules of a bygone era and offering insight into the pure desperation of trying to replicate TMNTs success. Such is the case with Creepy Crawlers, a magical, messy mix of '90s trends and probably one of the strangest attempts at creating the next big thing alongside the heroes in a half-shell.

The popularity of The CW's Supernatural has resulted in several attempts at a spinoff series. Since its 2005 release, Supernatural ran for a total of 15 seasons, covering the exploits of the Winchester brothers as they traveled across America, hunting monsters on the trail of their estranged father. While the main series centered on Sam and Dean and later, the show's resident fallen angel, Castiel the wider world of Supernatural offers rich material to expand on. Other fantasy series, such as The Originals and Chris Carter's Millennium, have proved that spinoffs can be as successful as their flagship shows.
Unfortunately, in Supernatural's case, many of its attempted spinoffs were ill-fated. The absence of the series' beloved main duo was felt in shows like The Winchesters, which focused on Sam and Dean's parents. When “The X-Files” premiered on Sept. 10, 1993 on Fox, viewers had no idea how incredibly bizarre the cases tackled by FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) would be.

A new show hits the air, and you’re hooked, counting down the days until the next season. Then, out of nowhere — Boom! — you find out your favorite show is canceled.
Before the age of streaming, plenty of beloved shows barely made it past one season. The usual culprit? “Low ratings.”
(Fox / Screenshot)
But often, networks were to blame. Maybe they stuck a great show in a terrible time slot or scheduled it against a ratings juggernaut on another network.
Sometimes, the show was too edgy or dark for network bigwigs or too complex for mainstream audiences to embrace right away.
In rare cases, fan campaigns brought a canceled show back for another season, but more often, it was game over.
If streaming had been as big back then as it is now, these shows — and their loyal fans — might have gotten the long run they deserved.
So, what failed...
Before the age of streaming, plenty of beloved shows barely made it past one season. The usual culprit? “Low ratings.”

But often, networks were to blame. Maybe they stuck a great show in a terrible time slot or scheduled it against a ratings juggernaut on another network.

Whether offering a philosophical comment on the mysteries of the universe or a witty one-liner, David Duchovny's Fox Mulder had some of the best quotes in The X-Files. The FBI agent investigates supernatural phenomena and uncovers government conspiracies alongside his skeptical sidekick, Dana Scully, dropping pearls of wisdom along the way. The agents made perfect foils, and their dynamic will be sorely missed in the upcoming Ryan Coolger X-Files reboot.
Thanks to the brilliant writing team behind the series, The X-Files has remained a cultural touchstone, reflected by its 85% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The X-Files' success was naturally built on a number of factors, with Molder being one of them. In addition to boasting years of character development and a great arc that unfolded across several seasons of The X-Files, Molder delivered some of the best lines in the show's history.

The X-Files could be television's most famous long-running science-fiction series. Supported by the palpable chemistry between Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny as its iconic leads, the Chris Carter show endured far longer than its creator likely could ever have envisioned. A long list of great The X-Files episodes and its reputation as one of the most memorable shows of the 1990s has since spawned spin-off movies and a questionable 2016 revival.
But given that the series ran for a grand total of 218 episodes since its 1993 debut, its unsurprising that some of these dipped in quality. In some cases in The X-Files, it was necessary to ignore certain details and facts in order to make sense of its plot. The overarching mythology running alongside The X-Files monster-of-the-week format is notoriously convoluted. These especially bizarre episodes made audiences wonder what the writers were thinking.
