If one takes a look at the classic Halloweentown franchise, one may notice an inconsistency in the fourth and final film in the franchise.

Where Was Stephen King's Rose Red Filmed? Mansion & Seattle Filming Locations Explained
Image
Rose Red, a television miniseries loosely adapted from Shirley Jackson's novel, The Haunting of Hill House, was filmed in Seattle, Washington, particularly in Thornewood Castle. Other locations used in the series include the University of Washington campus, the iconic Space Needle, and the Mount Baker neighborhood. Interior scenes were filmed at the Sand Point Naval Space, including the construction of sets for the Rose Red mansion's great hall, and the Artic Building served as the mansion's library.

Stephen King loosely adapted Shirley Jackson's 1959 novel The Haunting of Hill House into a television miniseries, Rose Red, set in Seattle, Washington, where all three episodes were filmed. The horror show revolved around an infamous haunted mansion in the Pacific Northwest, and the name of the house was Rose Red, hence the name of the series. A group of parapsychologists and psychics traveled to the mansion to investigate the hauntings and supernatural happenings,...

Stephen King's Rose Red Cast & Character Guide
Image
Stephen King's miniseries Rose Red had mixed reviews upon release but has gained new popularity since being added to Hulu's catalog in 2023. The miniseries allowed upcoming actors like Nancy Travis, Kimberly J. Brown, and Melanie Lynskey to showcase their abilities. Matt Keeslar played the role of Steve Rimbauer in Rose Red and has since had notable roles in films like Scream 3 and series like Dune.

Stephen King's underappreciated miniseries Rose Red includes a number of dynamic characters and a talented cast to bring them to life. In 2002, ABC released a three-part miniseries with a story by King. The show follows Dr. Joyce Reardon, a paranormal psychology professor who brings a group of psychics to the Rose Red mansion in hopes of finding scientific data that proves the existence of the paranormal. Once there, the team faces the evil spirits tethered to the house due to previous deaths.

Why Disney Didn't Make Halloweentown 5
Image
Despite the enduring popularity of the Halloweentown movies and the annual surge in viewership, Disney has never confirmed plans for a fifth installment. While hurdles such as the passing of Debbie Reynolds and the departure of many original cast members exist, Kimberly J. Brown remains passionate about the franchise and could potentially reprise her role as Marnie. With the success of reviving other nostalgic properties like Hocus Pocus, a fifth Halloweentown movie could be a possibility, featuring an adult Marnie passing on Cromwell magic to her own children, and possibly involving Reynolds' granddaughter Billie Lourd.

Why Disney never made a Halloweentown 5 can be confusing given how popular the first four Halloweentown movies were. Although the fourth entry in the witchy franchise, 2006's Return to Halloweentown, wasn't well-received, the series as a whole has endured for 25 years. Every October, the Halloweentown movies see a seasonal surge in popularity. In fact, tuning...

Why Sophie Doesn't Return For Halloweentown 4
Image
Sophie, played by Emily Roeske, doesn't appear in Return to Halloweentown due to Roeske's retirement from acting after Halloweentown High. Sophie's character was integral to the Cromwell magic and the family's efforts to save Halloweentown throughout the first three films. Although Sophie's absence is acknowledged in Return to Halloweentown, there is potential for her character to return in future franchise installments.

Despite being an integral part of the franchise, Sophie doesn't return for Halloweentown 4. Played by Emily Roeske, Sophie Piper is Marnie (Kimberly J. Brown) and Dylan's (Joey Zimmerman) younger sister. In the first Halloweentown, a young Sophie starts exhibiting signs of magical prowess: when she really wants a cookie, one floats through the air toward her. As Aggie later says in one of Halloweentown's best quotes, "Magic is really very simple: all you've got to do is want something and then let yourself have it." Unfortunately, Sophie and Marnie's mom,...

Where Is Halloweentown In Oregon?
Image
Halloweentown was mostly shot in St. Helens, Oregon, where fans can visit the iconic Halloweentown Plaza and the giant jack-o'-lantern in front of City Hall. Aggie Cromwell's house in the film is actually the Nob Hill Riverview Bed & Breakfast, located near Halloweentown Plaza. The Pipers' neighborhood in the movie is in Scappoose, Oregon, a suburban town with a more relaxed atmosphere than St. Helens. It is worth a visit for fans of Halloweentown.

While there's no need to leave the mortal world to sneak a peek at Aggie Cromwell's house or the infamous out-sized jack-o'-lantern, Halloweentown fans must trek to small-town Oregon to visit the movie's most iconic filming locations. Unlike Disney's other ever-popular Halloween-themed film, 1993's Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown isn't set in the holiday's traditional New England haunts. In fact, the 1998 movie doesn't specify its mortal-world setting - and there's no doubt that Marnie's (Kimberly J. Brown) realm-traversing adventure...

What Happened To Marnie's Father, William Piper, In Halloweentown?
Image
Marnie, Sophie, and Dylan's father, William Piper, died before the events of the first Halloweentown movie. His cause of death is not revealed, but his young age suggests an illness or accident. William Piper met Gwen at a Halloween party, and they got married and had kids. It is unclear if he knew about their magical powers. He was disliked by Kalabar, Halloweentown's future mayor. The movies never mention Marnie, Dylan, and Sophie's relationship with William's family. Even though Gwen could have returned to Halloweentown after William's death, the films don't explore their connection to their father's human family.

The Halloweentown movies’ focus on the Cromwell and Piper family leaves some major mysteries about key members, including what happened to Marnie, Dylan, and Sophie’s father. Disney’s 1998 movie Halloweentown reveals that 13-year-old Marnie Piper (Kimberly J. Brown) and her siblings Dylan and Sophie are being raised by their single mother Gwen Piper,...

Why Was Marnie Recast In Return To Halloweentown?
Image
Marnie's recasting in Return to Halloweentown was a disappointing decision that detracted from the magic of the original trilogy. Kimberly J. Brown, who originally played Marnie, expressed her disappointment about being replaced by Sara Paxton. Despite the recasting, Brown has continued her acting career and remains enthusiastic about reprising her role as Marnie in a potential future installment of the franchise.

For years, fans of the Halloweentown franchise have wondered why protagonist Marnie was recast in Return to Halloweentown. A 1998 Disney Channel Original Movie, the first installment in the Halloweentown series stars frequent Dcom collaborator Kimberly J. Brown as Marnie, a preteen with a penchant for the supernatural. After learning that she comes from a family of witches, Marnie is eager to tap into her powers, so she disobeys her mother's (Judith Hoag) wishes and follows her grandma, Aggie Cromwell (Debbie Reynolds), to the titular magical realm.

Soon enough, Marnie and her siblings,...

Seasonal favorites return like the cult classic Hocus Pocus, starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, courtesy of Walt Disney Pictures and Tim Burton’s beloved The Nightmare Before Christmas courtesy of Touchstone Pictures. The latter title, from director Henry Selick, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

The Halloweentown franchise gets a chunk of the lineup with such features as the original 1998 TV movie, starring Debbie Reynolds, Kimberly J. Brown, Joey Zimmerman, Emily Roeske and Judith Hoag, playing alongside Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge, Halloweentown High and Return to Halloweentown. Other major franchises on the lineup include The Twilight Saga, Monsters, Inc., The Addams Family, The Incredibles, Spider-Man, Hotel Transylvania and Twitches.

20 Wild Details Behind The Making Of Halloweentown
Image
2018 marked the 20th anniversary of one of Disney's first ever original movies, and a fan favorite, Halloweentown. The original movie went on to spawn three sequels - Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge, Halloweentown High, and Return to Halloweentown. Fans love to rewatch these movies every year around Halloween, and Disney still plays them on its channel to this day. What is so special about Halloweentown that makes fans keep coming back for more?

There are so many things to love about the Halloweentown movies. There's the nostalgia, the not-so-high-tech special effects, and the all around family Halloween fun. Debbie Reynolds, of course, shines in her role as Aggie, the magical witch grandmother to Marnie, Dylan, and Sophie. Marnie, played by Kimberly J. Brown (until she was recast in the fourth film with Sarah Paxton) is a massive fan favorite as well. To this day, Brown is asked about her time in the Halloweentown movies,...

What IndieWire Watches on Halloween, from ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ to ‘Tales from the Crypt’
Image
Whether you’re chilling out before a costume party or working late at the lab (Halloween is a Monday this year), October 31 practically screams, “Watch something!”

Yes, there are myriad seasonal activities to be enjoyed away from the ghastly glow of your screens: be it bobbing for apples, carving jack-o-lanterns, summoning the undead, or an overpriced rideshare. But few experiences are as instantly and totally transporting as the ones provided by our go-to movies and TV shows. That’s why so many of us insist on sneaking in annual viewings of our favorites between social events and trick-or-treaters. No matter how scary busy our schedules may get, making time for the Halloween tales we cherish feels in some small way important.

Maybe you’re putting on your makeup to the familiar beats of “Beetlejuice” or working from home with “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” to keep you company.

Debbie Reynolds, Kimberly J. Brown, Emily Roeske, and Joey Zimmerman in Les Sorcières d'Halloween (1998)
Here’s Why Marnie Was Recast in the ‘Halloweentown’ Franchise: ‘There’s No Beef’
Debbie Reynolds, Kimberly J. Brown, Emily Roeske, and Joey Zimmerman in Les Sorcières d'Halloween (1998)
Being normal is vastly overrated, but re-watching the “Halloweentown” franchise each year certainly is not. Of course, there’s one question that always comes back on those rewatches: why wasn’t Kimberly J. Brown in all of them?

Brown starred as Marnie Piper (though she later embraced her name as a Cromwell witch) in the first three movies in the series. But, after “Halloweentown High,” Sara Paxton took over the role for “Halloweentown Returns,” without any kind of explanation from or preparation by Disney. The move draws outrage from fans to this day, as many millennials considered it a “betrayal.”

So why did it happen? Well, according to Brown herself, she was initially in talks for the fourth film. In a 2018 Q&a video, the actress explained that there were conversations, but she never really found out why they fell apart.

“The answer to that is I’m not really sure,...

Most Unpopular Halloweentown Opinion: The Fourth Film Is the Best
Kimberly J. Brown
"Nobody around here really appreciates my taste in weird stuff." These words spoken by Marnie Piper (Kimberly J. Brown) in the original Halloweentown film became my personal mantra as a Halloween-obsessed kid. Why? Well, Brown's portrayal of Marnie had me feeling seen, as the character was a fan of the supernatural, bold and outspoken and perfectly imperfect. In fact, the quarterback at my high school once said I was Brown's real-life doppelgänger, which pleased me to no end. So when Disney Channel replaced Brown in the fourth film of the franchise, Return to Halloweentown, I personally felt slighted. Instead of the relatable actress I had come to admire, Return to...

After debuting on Disney Channel on Oct. 17, 1998, Halloweentown inspired three sequel films, Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge, Halloweentown High and Return to Halloweentown. Are You Ready For This? Halloweentown's Marnie and Kal Are Dating in Real Life
Debbie Reynolds, Kimberly J. Brown, Emily Roeske, and Joey Zimmerman in Les Sorcières d'Halloween (1998)
Despite being enemies in Halloweentown, Marnie and Kal have apparently fallen in love in the mortal world. After nearly a year of sharing sweet selfies, the Disney Channel original movie's Kimberly J. Brown and Daniel Kountz seemingly confirmed their relationship with a shot of them kissing on International Kissing Day in July. Fans of the '90s and '00s franchise with a cult-like following were stunned by the announcement, and Brown's post quickly amassed more than 10,000 "likes."

As it turns out, there may have been signs that the two had been dating for quite some time. Brown wished Kountz a happy birthday last year, and shortly thereafter the two celebrated Halloween together, fittingly enough, in Superman and Wonder Woman costumes. Kountz has consistently appeared on Brown's Instagram ever since. (It's worth noting that Kountz is not very active on Instagram.)

While Brown appeared in three Halloweentown movies, Kountz appeared only in the sequel,...
