Lauryn Hill played to a largely empty stadium Friday night as part of the 2025 Essence Festival of Culture, after taking the stage hours after scheduled.

While Hill has a bit of a reputation for late shows, this time it appeared out of her hands as Essence’s first day as a whole started late on Friday. Hill had been added to the lineup days prior — with the rest of Friday’s lineup including GloRilla, the Isley Brothers, Babyface and Maxwell. Coco Jones, who also stars on the Peacock show Bel-Air, was an unannounced performer. Singer Lucky Daye and Kandi Burruss’ girl group, Psiryn, were also early performers.

At one point, Mike Tyson was making more money than most of us could even imagine.

Brian Avnet, the respected personal manager and music executive who discovered Josh Groban, collaborated with David Foster and helped The Manhattan Transfer to great success, has died. He was 82.

Avnet died May 14 at his home in Los Angeles after a years-long battle with Parkinson’s disease, a publicist announced.

The Baltimore native also worked closely with the likes of Johnny Mandel, Herb Alpert and Lani Hall, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Cyndi Lauper, Take 6, Jean-Luc Ponty, Eric Benét and Joshua Ledet.

Avnet began working with The Manhattan Transfer in 1979, and two years later the vocal group became the first to win Grammys in the pop and jazz categories in the same year, earning trophies for “The Boy From New York City” and “Until I Met You (Corner Pocket).”

“Brian was an excellent manager and like a brother to me,” Manhattan Transfer founding member Alan Paul said in a statement.

Toni Braxton and Birdman secretly got married last year – but are now apparently heading for divorce.

The 57-year-old singer and the 56-year-old rapper tied the knot on August 8, 2024, but listed their date of separation as two days later, according to divorce papers obtained by TMZ.

The “Un-Break My Heart” singer filed for divorce approximately two weeks after her wedding date with Birdman, and she and her attorney referred to the marriage as “irretrievably broken” in the documents.

A decision by some cable companies to stop supporting the CableCARD technology has impacted celebrities who are fans of the TiVo service — and no celebrity has made a bigger stink about the situation than the most-famous radio personality in the world.

During his show on Wednesday, SiriusXM’s Howard Stern complained that the cable TV provider serving his home area had dropped their support for TiVo, a move he felt could effectively end the company.

Stern didn’t name the company, but one of the service providers in the greater New York City area is Optimum, which formerly offered cable TV and Internet products under the Cablevision brand. In October, Optimum’s parent company Altice USA said it would stop supporting CableCARD technology.
