The American Music Awards 50th anniversary special broke viewership records last week. The special featured performances from Green Day, Mariah Carey, Brad Paisley, Raye, and Stray Kids, among others, and marked a significant 54 percent increase in viewership since the awards show last aired in 2022.

The AMAs have been on a brief hiatus since 2022 when it found a new broadcast home on CBS following the end of a long-time contract with ABC. There was no ceremony in 2023, and the show is currently scheduled to return in May 2025 during Memorial Day weekend.

The American Music Awards came back in a big way.

The 50th anniversary special of the performance-filled event averaged more than 6 million viewers in its Oct. 6 broadcast on CBS.

That’s a 54 percent increase over the previous edition of the AMAs, which last aired in 2022 on ABC. That marks the largest year-over-year growth of a music special or award show on TV this year. It also stands as the second-most-watched music awards show in the U.S. in 2024 and the most-watched entertainment program on CBS in October so far.

The special also was the most-watched entertainment program on Oct. 6, behind only the NFL. It also beat out other major sports coverage including the MLB Playoffs and NASCAR.

Dick Clark Productions also said that the special is also the most-streamed AMAs in the show’s history and has notched 65 million views across social media platforms since it aired.

CBS announced additional performers confirmed for the American Music Awards 50th Anniversary Special. Nelly, Nile Rodgers & Chic, and Sheila E. will help celebrate the AMAs created by Dick Clark back in 1974, joining a star-studded list that includes Mariah Carey and Jennifer Hudson.

Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, Green Day, Brad Paisley, Kane Brown, Raye, and Stray Kids were previously announced to perform on the two-hour special airing on Sunday, October 6, 2024 at 5pm Pt/8pm Et. Two-time Ama winner Aj McLean, Cedric The Entertainer, Golden Globe winner Kate Hudson, three-time Ama winner Lance Bass, 15-time Ama winner Reba McEntire, Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson, and four-time Ama nominee Smokey Robinson will put in special appearances.

Rapper Nelly has won three AMAs, and he will perform a tribute to hip-hop’s evolution and greatest moments over the years along with special guests Chingy, J-Kwon, and members of the St. Lunatics. Meanwhile, Nile Rodgers and Chic will perform their classic single “Le Freak” as well as Rodgers’s Grammy-winning collaboration with Daft Punk and Pharrell, “Get Lucky.” Among his career achievements, Rodgers has been inducted into the Rock and Roll and Songwriters Halls of Fame. And Sheila E. will be joining previously announced performer Chaka Khan‘s tribute to women at the AMAs.
