Jessica Alba Producing ‘Wine & Spirits’ Mystery Drama Based On Medium Jennifer Shaffer In Works At Fox
Image
Exclusive: Fox is developing Wine & Spirits, a one-hour mystery drama from Jessica Alba’s production company, Lady Metalmark Entertainment. It is based on Manhattan Beach-based psychic medium Jennifer Shaffer who, in addition to her private clientele, consults with the FBI and LAPD to solve crimes.

“From the moment I met Jen Shaffer, I knew she was extraordinary,” Alba said. “Not just for her gift of connecting with the other side, but for her wit, sparkle, and unforgettable style. Over the years, we’ve shared laughter, tears, and even meditation retreats (which I may have dragged her to), and she’s helped awaken parts of my own intuition I never knew existed. Building a show around someone as dynamic as Jen has been a true joy, and I’m excited to see these stories come to life under Rob’s visionary direction.”

Written by Rob Sudduth (Acapulco), Wine & Spirits centers on Jennifer Shepherd,...

Harry Potter Director Claims His Vision for ‘Fantastic Four’ Was Rejected and Led to His Firing
Image
Chris Columbus, the filmmaker behind family classics like Mrs. Doubtfire, Home Alone, and the first two Harry Potterfilms, has revealed why he was fired from 20th Century Fox’s 2005 Fantastic Four. Speaking on the Fade to Blackpodcast, Columbus explained that his creative push for a more comic-accurate vision was not received well by studio executives — and cost him his job.

“We were in a weird situation. On the first Fantastic Four, I had worked on a script. There were a lot of writers involved. They were about to make a movie and I was producing it. I met with the director and had some ideas. I basically said, ‘Some of...

Chris Columbus Reveals Why He Was Fired From 2005's 'Fantastic Four'
Image
Chris Columbus is a prolific filmmaker with several major blockbusters and box office hits to his name, from Home Alone and Mrs. Doubtfire to the first two Harry Potter films and, more recently, Netflix's The Thursday Murder Club. However, not every project he worked on was smooth sailing. He recently revealed he was attached — and credited as an executive producer — on 2005's Fantastic Four, but claims he "had nothing to do with" the final film because he was abruptly "fired" from the 20th Century Fox production before shooting began.

The 2005 feature, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, was directed by Tim Story...

The 'Weird' Reason Marvel Fired a Harry Potter Director Off The Fantastic Four
Image
Harry Potter director Chris Columbus recently opened up about being fired from making a Fantastic Four movie. He was initially hired by 20th Century Fox to write and direct a film back in 1995.

Appearing on the Fade to Black podcast with Hanna Flint, Columbus revealed why the project didn't work out, sharing the shocking reason he was fired. "We were in a weird situation," he shared. "On the first Fantastic Four, I had worked on a script. There were a lot of writers involved. They were about to make a movie, and I was producing it. I met with the director and had some ideas."

Fantastic Four | Chris Columbus says he was fired from the 2005 for being too critical
Image
Home Alone director Chris Columbus says he was fired from 2005’s Fantastic Four movie for criticising its concept art.

The 2005 incarnation of Fantastic Four – the one starring Chris Evans, Jessica Alba and Ioan Gruffudd, among others – was directed by Tim Story. In another universe somewhere, it was directed by Home Alone's Chris Columbus, and released much earlier – he was initially attached to adapt the comic book in 1995. In the end, his incarnation never happened, however, though he did still receive an executive producer credit on the movie that emerged a decade later.

Columbus, who’s currently doing the promotional rounds for The Thursday Murder Club, on Netflix from today...

‘Home Alone’ and ‘Harry Potter’ Director Says ‘I Was Fired’ From 2005’s ‘Fantastic Four’ Movie After Criticizing Concept Art; Studio Said ‘I Had Too Much of an Opinion’
Image
Chris Columbus has directed some of the most enduring blockbusters of all time, from “Mrs. Doubtfire” and the “Home Alone” films to the first two “Harry Potter” movies. But even with those movies under his belt, Columbus still found himself getting booted from 20th Century Fox’s original “Fantastic Four” movie. The director is credited as an executive producer on the movie “but had nothing to do with it,” he recently told the “Fade to Black” podcast.

“We were in a weird situation,” Columbus said. “On the first ‘Fantastic Four,’ I had worked on a script. There were a lot of writers involved. They were about to make a movie and I was producing it. I met with the director and had some ideas. I basically said, ‘Some of this conceptual art should feel more like Jack Kirby, the creator of the Fantastic Four, and should feel more like the Silver Age of Marvel.

Before NCIS, Michael Weatherly Starred In A Canceled James Cameron Series
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

James Cameron burst onto the scene with the sci-fi action classic "The Terminator," and he has since parlayed that success into a very prosperous Hollywood career. Cameron's "Avatar" made history by becoming the highest-grossing film of all time on two occasions, while his sequel, "Avatar: The Way of Water," is right up there with it in terms of profitability and currently ranks as the third highest-grossing movie ever. Elsewhere, "Titanic" -- Cameron's award-winning disaster blockbuster starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as lovers on the titular sinking ship -- occupies the fourth spot on that same list. Needless to say, the man knows how to write, direct, and produce hits, although even he isn't immune to projects that fail to gain the interest of the masses.

In 2000, Cameron and Charles H. Eglee co-created "Dark Angel," a short-lived post-apocalyptic sci-fi action...

Jessica Alba Sells Pitch For R-Rated Female Ensemble Comedy To Netflix; Madison Vanderberg Adapting Screenplay
Image
Exclusive: Jessica Alba’s Lady Metalmark Entertainment has closed a deal with Netflix for an untitled R-rated female ensemble comedy, which she’ll star in and produce alongside partner Tracey Nyberg.

The project stems from an original pitch, inspired by business retreats that Alba has attended over the years as an entrepreneur. Madison Vanderberg, whose script Howl was featured on the 2024 Black List, will adapt the screenplay, drawing on her extensive experience in female workplaces as a journalist for various women’s lifestyle sites.

“As a successful entrepreneur, I’ve had years of first-hand experience with corporate culture and the irony/absurdities that can lie between the lines as a female executive,” Alba told Deadline. “We were thrilled by Madison’s approach to this subject. She exquisitely highlights those elements that are ridiculous while creating indelible characters who are trying to navigate the world of modern corporate culture – all while still holding onto their humanity.

Michael Chiklis Says His ‘Fantastic Four’ Films Were “Very Underrated” and Critics “Got It Wrong”
Image
Is the 2005 Fantastic Four film underrated? Michael Chiklis certainly thinks so.

Chiklis played Ben Grimm/the Thing in the first live-action adaptation of the iconic superhero quartet. When looking back on the project, a conversation sparked by the recent release of Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the actor told Collider he believes critics at the time “got it wrong.”

“There were a lot of people, I think, critically who got it wrong,” he said of the 2005 film and its 2007 follow-up Rise of the Silver Surfer. “They really maligned our films, and they were very underrated considering… They were very loved by the audience. It was one of those cases where critics weren’t great to those films, but the audience was, and that still remains.”

The Emmy winner acknowledged the appreciation shown by the audience as opposed to critics, adding, “And now all these years later, people are sort of acknowledging like,...

Jenna Ortega might be the queen of unbothered stares and razor-sharp comebacks in Wednesday, but off-screen, she’s refreshingly real about the battles she fights behind the scenes. In a recent interview with the Heart Evening show, the 21-year-old star got candid about living with what she calls “pretty intense Ocd,” and honestly, her veracity about the topic seemed quite brave.

She explained that Ocd isn’t just about being a neat freak; it’s a constant loop of intrusive thoughts and rituals you feel you have to do. It includes repetitive thoughts, counting multiple times, and repeating an action over and over again.

Moreover, the actress also revealed that some nights, she finds herself walking up and down her stairs six times in a row, she explained,

That’s what I think I need to do to make sure no one breaks into my home.

And like so many people,...

Former Thing Actor Michael Chiklis Defends Critically Panned 'Fantastic Four' Movies
Image
Michael Chiklis, who played Ben Grimm / The Thing in 2005's Fantastic Four and 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, defends the movies from the poor critic reception they received two decades ago. Marvel's First Family are back in the spotlight thanks to The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which many consider to be the first time the superhero team has worked on screen. However, the nostalgia cycle has seen the 2000s films, which were criticized at the time of their release, looked back fondly on by the people who grew up with them as their first exposure to the classic Marvel heroes.

Speaking with Collider, Chiklis reflected on the lasting legacy of Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer despite poor critic reactions. He noted the films' box office grosses, noting, "We made three-quarters of $1 billion, those two movies. So, you know, all those people can...

Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis, Chris Evans, and Ioan Gruffudd in Les 4 Fantastiques (2005)

The 'Uncomfortable' Argument Marvel Creatives Had Over Pedro Pascal's Stretching in Fantastic Four
Image
This article contains spoilers for Marvel's The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps writer Eric Pearson recently talked about an uncomfortable argument Marvel creatives had behind the scenes of the movie. Scenes involving Pedro Pascal's Mister Fantastic and his stretching were something that reportedly 'tested the limits.'

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Pearson talked about The Fantastic Four's fight against the villainous Galactus (Ralph Ineson). At one point, when all four family members join together to try and take him down, Galactus is able to thwart Pascal's Reed Richards and finds humor in stretching the hero to his limits, literally trying to pull him apart from both ends. It was this very scene that caused the debate among the film's creatives.

"I don’t know if it made you uncomfortable, the stretch [of Reed Richards]," Pearson said. "[Director] Matt [Shakman] wasn’t allergic to stretching, but he was like,...

‘The Pickup’ Review: Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson Don’t Give a Truck in a Fitful Action Comedy
Image
A wheel almost literally comes off the armored truck where much of the action and most of the comedy takes place in Tim Story’s action-comedy “The Pickup” (a rather confusing name considering that’s another type of truck altogether). It’s early enough in the proceedings, so a quick repair makes the van roadworthy again. But sadly, no such fix exists for this ungainly star vehicle’s metaphorical wheels which, as the plot squeals around yet another credulity-defying twist, are soon flying off in all directions leaving the movie careening wildly across the freeway, gears grinding, axles sparking, while a checked-out Eddie Murphy and an overcompensatingly antic Pete Davidson strap in, grimly trying to gin up some buddy chemistry.

Murphy and Davidson play armored truck guards — veteran Russell and rookie Travis, respectively — thrown together on this particular day by circumstance and their mean-mannered boss Clark (Andrew Dice Clay). Clark...

Pierce Brosnan and Salma Hayek have appeared in many successful movies. Beyond starring as James Bond, Brosnan played lead roles in The Thomas Crown Affair and Mamma Mia!, the latter of which initially generated over $610 million and warranted a sequel. He also joined Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and Black Adam.

Hayek, who gained recognition in From Dusk Till Dawn and earned an Academy Award nomination for Frida, has several notable hits under her belt. Among them are star-studded comedies Grown Ups and The Hitman's Bodyguard. Hayek has also been part of major franchises through Eternals and the Puss in Boots movies.

Brosnan and Hayek have even starred in a few movies together, the most recent being Some Kind of Beautiful. The rom-com premiered in 2015 with an underwhelming box office performance, weakened by a mere 6% Tomatometer score, despite a cast that included Jessica Alba and Malcolm McDowell.

Jesse Metcalfe Regrets Skipping ‘Entourage’ Audition: “I Blew That One”
Image
Although Jesse Metcalfe made his TV heartthrob debut on ABC‘s Desperate Housewives in 2004, he missed a chance to break out that year on HBO.

The actor recently recounted passing up on “auditioning for Adrian Grenier‘s role” as movie star Vincent Chase in the hit 6x Emmy-winning Doug Ellin series Entourage, which ran for eight seasons from 2004 to 2011 before culminating in a 2015 big screen offshoot.

“I had an audition for Entourage, and I read the pilot episode, and I was like, ‘This is stupid,’ and I didn’t go to the audition,” he admitted to People.

“Obviously, I had no idea what I was talking about,” added Metcalfe. “That ended up being an iconic show that I absolutely love, and definitely wish I was a part of.”

Entourage ultimately starred Grenier as Vinny, a newly-minted Hollywood star who migrates west from Queens, NY with his brother Drama (Kevin Dillon...

Ioan Gruffudd Recalls the ‘Fantastic Four’ That Made Money: ‘We Were Being True to the Comic’
Image
It’s perhaps the comic book film genre’s greatest conundrum: how do you crack the Fantastic Four? This weekend, despite positive word of mouth and a solid opening weekend haul, the quartet’s latest — subtitled “First Steps” — tumbled 66% at the domestic box office. Undoubtedly, before Hollywood looks to craft the next adventure, they’ll look back at what has worked before — and the most recent unequivocal success came from the simply titled “Fantastic Four” in 2005, which featured Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, and Iaon Gruffudd.

Now, “unequivocal,” to be fair, does not count reviews — “First Steps” has most certainly outpaced this older version in terms of critical reception. But the film grossed three times its budget and managed to produce a sequel in 2007 — “Rise of the Silver Surfer” — which also made money. Of course, after that, Marvel Studios became a thing, and something called the MCU happened. But...

Hugh Jackman's Cut Fantastic Four Cameo Addressed By Original Reeds Richards Star 20 Years Later
Image
Marvel’s first family may have just found its way into the MCU, but Fantastic Four’s original Reed Richards has finally spoken about scrapped plans for a Wolverine cameo in the 2005 movie. Serving as the sixth Marvel movie released by 20th Century Fox following the success of 2000’s X-Men, eager-eyed fans have since spotted several X-Men Easter eggs throughout.

In addition to magazine covers referencing X-Men cast members James Marsden and Rebecca Romijn, Fantastic Four’s original DVD release also contained a deleted scene where Ioan Gruffudd’s Reed Richards attempts to impress Jessica Alba’s Sue Storm by using his powers to transform his face into a “stronger man.” That man ends up being none other than Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.

Speaking with Vultureabout his time as Mister Fantastic, Gruffudd was quizzed about the infamous deleted scene and Fantastic Four’s attempts to introduce a Wolverine cameo. Admitting...

A Bizarre Hugh Jackman Wolverine 'Cameo' Was Deleted From The First Fantastic Four Movie

In the early 2000s, superhero movies were on their way to becoming the dominant force in pop culture for the first time. There had previously been one-off hits such as Tim Burton's "Batman," but the success of 2000's "X-Men" put Marvel on the mainstream map for the first time, having built off the popularity of 1998's "Blade." Sam Raimi and Sony's "Spider-Man" took things to another level in 2002, and from there, it was off to the races. 20th Century Fox then followed 2003's "X2: X-Men United" with director Tim Story's "Fantastic Four," which became a solid hit for the studio. It also very nearly created a shared on-screen Marvel universe ... sort of.

Ioan Gruffudd portrayed Reed Richards, aka Mister Fantastic, in Story's 2005 adaptation of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's superheroic comic book family. Jessica Alba co-starred as Sue Storm,...

Original ‘Fantastic Four’ Star Ioan Gruffudd Says the ‘Plan Was to Do Three Movies’ but Studio Cut Franchise Short: ‘Decisions Beyond My Control’
Image
Long before Pedro Pascal stretched his limbs as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic in “Fantastic Four: The First Steps,” it was Ioan Gruffudd who led Marvel’s first family in 2005’s “Fantastic Four” and 2007’s “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.” The films were critical duds and only mild box office hits (each grossed more than $300 million worldwide). In a new interview with Vulture, Gruffudd looked back at his original “Fantastic Four” franchise being cut short.

“The mindset was that we were going to do three, and I think the second movie was equally successful as the first and equally enjoyable for the fans,” Gruffudd said. “I particularly loved working with Doug Jones [as the Silver Surfer] on that movie, who’s just a terrific artist and an expert in the field of movement. If you want to witness somebody bringing a character to life physically, he’s just untouchable. So there was definitely that sort of momentum,...

Ioan Gruffudd Reflects on Why His Third ‘Fantastic Four’ Movie Was Scrapped
Image
The Fantastic Four movies from two decades ago ended prematurely.

Ioan Gruffudd starred as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic in 2005’s Fantastic Four and the 2007 sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and with the new Fantastic Four film recently hitting theaters, he’s reflecting on how there was supposed to be a third film in the early ’00s series and why it didn’t happen.

“The mindset was that we were going to do three,” he told Vulture. “I think the second movie was equally successful as the first and equally enjoyable for the fans. I particularly loved working with Doug Jones [as the Silver Surfer] on that movie, who’s just a terrific artist and an expert in the field of movement. If you want to witness somebody bringing a character to life physically, he’s just untouchable.”

He added, “So there was definitely that sort of momentum, and the plan was to do three movies,...

Fantastic Four: First Steps Box Office Milestone Brings MCU Movie Close To Breaking Huge Record
Image
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is drawing close to a major box office record. The new Marvel Cinematic Universe movie stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, and the Thing, who are the four members of the titular superhero team.

First Steps is the fifth Fantastic Four movie, though it is only the fourth to come to theaters. Previous movies adapting the comics include an unreleased Roger Corman-produced feature from 1994, pirated copies of which have made it something of a cult classic.

This was followed by 2005's Fantastic Four and 2007's Rise of the Silver Surfer, both of which starred Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis. Another adaptation was mounted in 2015, starring Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell.

Per The Numbers, The Fantastic Four: First Steps brought in $8.6 million at...

Fantastic Four Movies Ranked, from Corman to the MCU
Image
After years of being out of Marvel’s grasp, the Fantastic Four has finally, officially and fully, joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe with The Fantastic Four: First Steps – and to celebrate, we have decided to look back at the other Fantastic Four movies that have been made to put together a list of Fantastic Four Movies Ranked. Here we go, from worst to best:

Fantastic Four (2015)

The ‘94 film is the one executives tried to bury, but the making of the 2015 Fantastic Four was such a horrible mess, maybe Fox should have just scrapped it and used it for a $120 million tax write-off, Warner Bros. style. The differing opinions behind the scenes are apparent in the finished movie, where the more traditional comic book movie sensibilities of screenwriter Jeremy Slater and writer/producer Simon Kinberg come through in the first half, while director Josh Trank’s wrong-headed attempt to turn the...

Ioan Gruffudd Teases Fantastic Four Return After Almost Playing a Very Different X-Men Mutant
Image
Ioan Gruffudd, the Og Mr. Fantastic from the 2005 Fantastic Four film, just sent the Marvel multiverse into a caffeine-fueled frenzy. The actor recently shared a cryptic photo of himself clutching a coffee cup with a very deliberate “4” foam art on the top. Now, fans are spiraling out of control, speculating if Gruffudd is hinting at his return.

And by speculating, we mean people are not hoping for Ioan Gruffudd to come back as Mr. Fantastic, especially now that Pedro Pascal has bagged the role. Instead, fans are expecting the actor to return as The Maker, an evil alternate version of Reed Richards. But the buzz didn’t stop there.

In a recent Vulture interview, Gruffudd dropped another bombshell about how he almost played a very different mutant role. Turns out, in the 2005 Fantastic Four movie, the actor appeared as none other than the X-Men mutant Wolverine, in a deleted scene.

Bobbi Althoff Signs Off ‘The Really Good Podcast’
Image
CBS’ The Late Show franchise lasted 33 years, but Bobbi Althoff’s absurdist The Really Good Podcast is signing off after 2 1/2 years.

And, no, costs aren’t to blame, nor are anti-Trump jokes. Rather, Althoff has simply decided to pull the plug.

Althoff, who started as a vlogger on TikTok providing advice to new moms, made a 180-degree turn to doing sit-downs with prolific guests on The Really Good Podcast including Jimmy Kimmel, Shaquille O’Neal, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Alba, Jason Derulo, Meghan Trainor, Mark Cuban, Offset, Peso Pluma, Michael Cera and more. Her deadpan-uncomfortable Valley Girl shtick had her asking fearless questions that made her guests bristle. Often, part of the bit was being rather clueless of her guests’ feats.

Her interview with Drake, conducted in his bed, put her on the map. Overall, that episode racked up 1 billion views and 300 million likes. The media was baffled as to how she...

Fantastic Four Star Ioan Gruffudd On Why A Third Movie Didn't Happen, Cut Wolverine Scene, And MCU Return
Image
Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd first played Reed Richards in 2005's Fantastic Four, and later reprised the role in 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. His take on Mister Fantastic remains well-liked among fans, though Gruffudd has yet to return to the blockbuster realm.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrived in theaters last weekend, bringing the original Fantastic Four cast back into the conversation. Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis, and Chris Evans didn't appear in the Marvel Studios movie, though there were rumours about the latter showing up as Nomad (setting the stage for next December's Avengers: Doomsday).

Vulture recently spoke with Gruffudd in a piece that takes a deep dive into his role in the Fantastic Four movies. It's well worth a read to learn how he approached playing the character, and the conversation eventually turned to the infamous deleted scene with Mister Fantastic transforming into Hugh Jackman's Wolverine.

12 Comedic Actors With A Dramatic Role That Didn't Turn Out Very Well
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Every comedian, at one point or another, tries their hand at drama. As much as everyone enjoys a good laugh, no one wants to be typecast in the same kinds of roles throughout their career. Sometimes, it works brilliantly. Take Robin Williams, for example -- he used his incredible gift for comedy to become a hugely popular star on both the big and small screens. Then he seamlessly transitioned to drama, appearing in films like "Good Morning, Vietnam," "Dead Poets Society," "Awakenings," and "The Fisher King," and later went above and beyond behind the scenes to win a well-deserved Oscar for "Good Will Hunting." While audiences always recognized him for his energetic stand-up routines and comedic performances in blockbusters like "Mrs. Doubtfire" and Disney's animated "Aladdin," he still managed to carve out a solid niche as a bankable dramatic star.

Before Fantastic Four, Marvel's Silver Surfer Actress Was In A Much Different Comic Book Movie
Image
Actress Julia Garner made her feature film debut in 2011, playing the role of Sarah in the deprogramming drama "Martha Marcy May Marlene." She quickly landed many additional film roles for her talent and her intensity, appearing in both gentle indie dramas (like "Electrick Children") and studio schlock (like "The Last Exorcism II"). In 2014, Garner already appeared in her ninth feature film, "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For," a sequel to the 2005 film "Sin City." She was rolling high, and would only continue to become more famous.

"Sin City," as many remember, was a highly stylized, near-animated film noir directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller. It was based on Miller's 1991 comic of the same name, itself designed to be a film noir on steroids. It took the images and themes and stories of old pulp crime stories, and ratcheted up the sex and violence to a dizzying degree.

Twin Peaks And The 2000s Fantastic Four Movies Have A Surprising Connection
Image
When you think of "Twin Peaks," you probably think of David Lynch. After all, it's Lynch's bizarre stylings and penchant for the surreal that the franchise is most famous for. But it wasn't all Lynch -- far from it. The property was co-created by Lynch and writer Mark Frost, who had previously cut his teeth on the popular 1980s TV series "Hill Street Blues."

While Lynch brought his auteur filmmaker sensibilities, Frost brought recent, prominent experience from the TV drama realm -- a space where he had already experimented with the more ambitious long-term storytelling that made his collaboration with Lynch so appealing. Frost also returned alongside Lynch in 2017 for the long-awaited third season of "Twin Peaks" (aka "Twin Peaks: The Return"), ensuring that the unique combo that made the original TV show so successful stayed intact.

In between, of course, Frost worked on a number of other projects,...

Box Office: ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Lifts Off With Heroic $118 Million Debut
Image
“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is off on the right foot at the box office.

Marvel’s latest comic book adaptation has lifted off with $118 million from 4,125 North American theaters over the weekend. Those ticket sales were slightly ahead of expectations of $100 million to $110 million.

“Fantastic Four,” a retro-futuristic adventure starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn as the titular team, collected another $100 million at the international box office for a global total of $218 million. Directed by Matt Shakman, “Fantastic Four” follows the foursome of Mister Fantastic (Pascal), Invisible Woman (Kirby), The Thing (Moss-Bachrach) and Human Torch (Quinn) as they protect their world from a planet-devouring cosmic being.

Based on initial turnout, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is shaping up to be a needed win for Marvel Studios. The comic book empire, which has become Hollywood’s most reliable hit maker, has greatly struggled with commercial consistency over the past five years.
