Chris Columbus has directed some of the most enduring blockbusters of all time, from “Mrs. Doubtfire” and the “Home Alone” films to the first two “Harry Potter” movies. But even with those movies under his belt, Columbus still found himself getting booted from 20th Century Fox’s original “Fantastic Four” movie. The director is credited as an executive producer on the movie “but had nothing to do with it,” he recently told the “Fade to Black” podcast.

“We were in a weird situation,” Columbus said. “On the first ‘Fantastic Four,’ I had worked on a script. There were a lot of writers involved. They were about to make a movie and I was producing it. I met with the director and had some ideas. An action remake starring one of the action genre's most prominent faces, Jason Statham, lands a new streaming home this fall. Statham's star-studded thriller, The Mechanic, fixes up a streaming premiere on Paramount+ this September.

Paramount+ has confirmed the arrival of several movies next month, with The Mechanic set to hit the popular streaming service on Sept. 1. The film is otherwise available to stream via Peacock or to rent/purchase on multiple digital platforms, including Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

Exclusive: Jessica Alba’s Lady Metalmark Entertainment has closed a deal with Netflix for an untitled R-rated female ensemble comedy, which she’ll star in and produce alongside partner Tracey Nyberg.

The project stems from an original pitch, inspired by business retreats that Alba has attended over the years as an entrepreneur. Madison Vanderberg, whose script Howl was featured on the 2024 Black List, will adapt the screenplay, drawing on her extensive experience in female workplaces as a journalist for various women’s lifestyle sites.

“As a successful entrepreneur, I’ve had years of first-hand experience with corporate culture and the irony/absurdities that can lie between the lines as a female executive,” Alba told Deadline. “We were thrilled by Madison’s approach to this subject. The Fantastic Four: First Steps writer Eric Pearson recently talked about an uncomfortable argument Marvel creatives had behind the scenes of the movie. Scenes involving Pedro Pascal's Mister Fantastic and his stretching were something that reportedly 'tested the limits.'

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Pearson talked about The Fantastic Four's fight against the villainous Galactus (Ralph Ineson). At one point, when all four family members join together to try and take him down, Galactus is able to thwart Pascal's Reed Richards and finds humor in stretching the hero to his limits, literally trying to pull him apart from both ends. In a new interview with Vulture, Gruffudd looked back at his original “Fantastic Four” franchise being cut short.

The Fantastic Four movies from two decades ago ended prematurely.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is drawing close to a major box office record. The new Marvel Cinematic Universe movie stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, and the Thing, who are the four members of the titular superhero team.

First Steps is the fifth Fantastic Four movie, though it is only the fourth to come to theaters. Previous movies adapting the comics include an unreleased Roger Corman-produced feature from 1994, pirated copies of which have made it something of a cult classic.

This was followed by 2005's Fantastic Four and 2007's Rise of the Silver Surfer, both of which starred Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis. Another adaptation was mounted in 2015, starring Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell.

Ioan Gruffudd, the Og Mr. Fantastic from the 2005 Fantastic Four film, just sent the Marvel multiverse into a caffeine-fueled frenzy. The actor recently shared a cryptic photo of himself clutching a coffee cup with a very deliberate “4” foam art on the top. Now, fans are spiraling out of control, speculating if Gruffudd is hinting at his return.

And by speculating, we mean people are not hoping for Ioan Gruffudd to come back as Mr. Fantastic, especially now that Pedro Pascal has bagged the role. Instead, fans are expecting the actor to return as The Maker, an evil alternate version of Reed Richards. But the buzz didn’t stop there.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrived in theaters last weekend, bringing the original Fantastic Four cast back into the conversation. "Sin City," as many remember, was a highly stylized, near-animated film noir directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller. It was based on Miller's 1991 comic of the same name, itself designed to be a film noir on steroids. It took the images and themes and stories of old pulp crime stories, and ratcheted up the sex and violence to a dizzying degree.

When you think of "Twin Peaks," you probably think of David Lynch. After all, it's Lynch's bizarre stylings and penchant for the surreal that the franchise is most famous for. Marvel’s latest comic book adaptation has lifted off with $118 million from 4,125 North American theaters over the weekend. Those ticket sales were slightly ahead of expectations of $100 million to $110 million.

“Fantastic Four,” a retro-futuristic adventure starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn as the titular team, collected another $100 million at the international box office for a global total of $218 million. Directed by Matt Shakman, “Fantastic Four” follows the foursome of Mister Fantastic (Pascal), Invisible Woman (Kirby), The Thing (Moss-Bachrach) and Human Torch (Quinn) as they protect their world from a planet-devouring cosmic being.

Based on initial turnout, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is shaping up to be a needed win for Marvel Studios. The comic book empire, which has become Hollywood’s most reliable hit maker, has greatly struggled with commercial consistency over the past five years.
