In the wake of Michelle Trachtenberg's tragic passing, fans are looking back at her wide range of contributions to the film and television industry with a fresh lens. She managed to cross over into various pop culture fandoms, something most actors or actresses would dream of, but she's perhaps best known to many genre fans as Dawn Summers on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Her arrival as Buffy's sister, who had seemingly been there the entire time based on the narrative of Season 5, was a bold move by the show's creative team because it could've easily been a "jumping the shark moment."

Following the news of Michelle Trachtenberg's untimely passing yesterday, tributes are pouring in from fans and colleagues alike. Their sentiments have been beautiful as they reflect on Trachtenberg's impact on the industry through her work, which reached a wide-ranging fandom, but Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans were most eager to hear from Trachtenberg's TV sister, Sarah Michelle Gellar. The pair played siblings on the hit genre series, with Trachtenberg's unexpected arrival during Season 5 seen by many to be one of the show's best story arcs. It seems only fitting that Gellar broke her silence on Trachtenberg's death with a callback to their bond on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Gellar took to her Instagram page and posted a series of pictures that were a mix of snapshots from the pair's time on Buffy and photos from various events. Gellar's caption was short and sweet but it will mean a lot...

When Dawn Summers (Michelle Trachtenberg) first popped up at the end of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" Season 5, Episode 1, it was a shock to everyone watching. There had never been any mention of Buffy having a younger sister, and yet, as soon as she shows up, the whole cast acts like it's the most natural thing in the world. It was clear at the time that something strange was afoot, but it took a while for fans to figure it out. The secret of Dawn, her status as the "Key," and her relationship to season villain and Hell goddess Glory (Clare Kramer) unfold over the course of Season 5, contributing to what many (myself included) see as the show's greatest chapter.
With the recent, tragic news of Trachtenberg's death, it seems appropriate to look back at some of her best episodes of "Buffy." Always a unique piece of the show's ensemble, Dawn...

All seven of the Bring It On movies can be watched in release order or any order the audience chooses. The teen cheerleading comedy series began in 2000 with the release of the very first Bring It On movie, which was helmed by Ant-Man's Peyton Reed. The film follows high school cheer captain Torrance Shipman (Kirsten Dunst) as she scrambles to come up with an original routine for her team the Toros to perform at a national competition after discovering her predecessor plagiarized choreography from rival squad, the East Compton Clovers, led by Gabrielle Union’s Isis.
Although Bring It On was initially dismissed as just another teen comedy, it’s become a cult classic in the years since, thanks to its exploration of race, class, and cultural appropriation through the lens of the wealthy, suburban, and predominantly white Toros, and the low-income, inner-city and predominantly Black East Compton Clovers. From 1997-2003, Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) was indisputably the most prominent monster hunter on television. Two years after Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended, the horror procedural Supernatural blasted onto screens, introducing the world to iconic monster-hunting duo Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester. Sadly, the programs just missed each other, so an epic crossover was out of the question. But if their leads ever did cross paths, Buffy and Dean may be shocked by how much they have in common.
Buffy is a sassy former cheerleader whose life changes when she learns she is the Slayer, the chosen one in her generation gifted with the powers and skills to fight vampires and demons. Dean is a roguish outcast, raised to hunt monsters since childhood after a demon murdered his mother. On the surface, they exemplify very different archetypes, but their journeys force them to deal with surprisingly similar obstacles.

Audiences can be very quick to judge TV characters, to the point that their first impression can often turn out to be entirely wrong, with the realization that they were great all along. This can easily happen to characters who oppose the protagonist in some way, as viewers naturally root for the lead and see anyone who is blocking their goals as a threat. However, as the characters' motivations become clearer, everyone soon comes to the realization that they harshly and unfairly judged them.
Many of the best TV characters ever started off unpopular yet managed to redeem themselves throughout the series. In some cases, annoying TV characters managed to become fan favorites as viewers got to know and understand their backstories, motivations, and likable characteristics. The 2024 Mean Girls improves upon the original by offering a new updated ending, while still maintaining the focus on an unpopular high-schooler's struggles with popularity. Some of the campiest WB teen soaps have taken inspiration from classic films, and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is no exception. The characters in this supernatural high school series rival the complexity of great cinematic figures from the films of acclaimed directors, and it's no accident — some of them were inspired by those very sources. In fact, one of Stanley Kubrick's most famous and terrifying films, "The Shining," had a big influence on one of the most formidable villains in "Buffy."
Jack Nicholson's leading performance in the 1980 psycho-thriller is not among the 12 in his career to bring him Academy Award recognition, and yet it remains one of his most celebrated. His role as the violent off-season inn-keeper of a remote haunted hotel has provided source material for a great many writers and actors alike, including Clare Kramer, who played the hell god Glorificus in "Buffy."

Although Buffy the Vampire Slayer is often considered to be one of the definitive young adult shows of all time, the series only took place in high school for its first three seasons. Following the emancipation of Sunnydale High School in the third season, Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and her friends Xander Harris (Nicholas Brendon) and Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan) are forced to learn what it is like to be young adults living in a world dominated by evil. While the fourth season struggled to transition the characters from high school to college, Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s fifth season did a great job of showing how the characters dealt with issues like heartbreak, loss, anxiety, and depression, all of which had nothing to do with the undead. A more mature season called for a more nuanced villain, and the double threat of the evil goddess Glory (Clare Kramer...

While it’s common knowledge that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a monster-of-the-week show, it’s interesting to note that the series stops focusing on vampires after season 2. Despite the show being called Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the titular Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) branches out from primarily slaying vampires pretty quickly, although vampires do remain as lackeys for much of the show. This is by no means a problem, but it is fascinating to see how such a successful series avoided pigeonholing its episodes while remaining true to its core premise.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer depicts how Slayers, girls chosen to battle the monsters and vampires of the world, carry out their duties. In the show's generation, the powers of the Slayer go to Buffy Summers, a socialite high schooler. She is joined by her friends, primarily Xander (Nicholas Brendon) and Willow (Alyson Hannigan), and her mentor, Giles (Anthony Head...

While Dawn Summers (Michelle Trachtenberg) was not the most popular character on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, her presence was still good for the show overall. Part of the reason the supernatural series was so strong was not only because of its action and engaging monsters, but because of its ability to explore complex personal relationships, whether they were platonic, romantic, or familial. One of these relationships, between Dawn and Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar), is the lynchpin of Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 5, even though it wasn’t always the most popular with the fandom. All the same, it’s important to examine how Dawn’s arrival helped the series tread new ground.
Dawn first arrives in Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 5 as Buffy’s sister, with her appearance heralding the beginning of the Scoobies’ battle against a hell demon called Glorificus (Clare Kramer). Despite having never appeared before, Buffy and...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer star James Marsters recalls how he made a crucial change to Spike to ensure that the character wouldn't be killed off. Initially introduced in Buffy season 2, Spike would remain part of the show until the series finale and would even move on to become the co-lead on the spinoff Angel for season 5. Spike was created as a secondary antagonist, but thanks in large part to the performance of Marsters and his chemistry with Sarah Michelle Gellar's Buffy Summers, he became an integral part of the show's universe.
Still, while speaking at a recent MyCon Live event at the Connecticut Convention Center, Marsters revealed that the original plan was for Spike to be killed off. Sharing the stage with fellow Buffy the Vampire Slayer alums Charisma Carpenter, Julie Benz, Marc Blucas, Kristine Sutherland, and Clare Kramer, the Spike actor recalled how Drusilla (Juliet Landau) was intended to be the bigger character.

Writers who have worked with Joss Whedon have begun speaking out about their experience with the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator in light of Charisma Carpenter’s allegations earlier this week.
“‘Casually cruel’ is a perfect way of describing Joss,” “Firefly” writer Jose Molina wrote in a tweet Friday evening, adding the #IStandWithCharisma hashtag. “He thought being mean was funny. Making female writers cry during a notes session was especially hysterical. He actually liked to boast about the time he made one writer cry twice in one meeting.”

“While I am proud to have my name associated with Buffy Summers, I don’t want to be forever associated with the name Joss Whedon,” Gellar wrote in a statement on Instagram.
The actor said she will not be making any further statements on the matter, since she is “more focused on raising my family and surviving a pandemic.” But, she added, “I stand with all survivors of abuse and am proud of them for speaking out.”
Gellar’s full statement is below.

Charisma Carpenter accused “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel” creator Joss Whedon Wednesday of “hostile and toxic” behavior on the sets of the late ’90s and early ’00s WB television series.
In a lengthy statement tweeted by the actress, who played Cordelia Chase on both “Buffy” and its spinoff “Angel,” accused Whedon of “retaliatory” and “cruel” behavior while she was pregnant on the set of “Angel,” and said she supports “Justice League” star Ray Fisher’s claims against Whedon.
Carpenter also said she was part of WarnerMedia’s investigation into Whedon’s actions on the set of “Justice League,” following Fisher’s accusations of “gross, abusive, unprofessional” behavior against Whedon, who took over reshoots on the film when original director Zack Snyder had to exit due to a family tragedy.

Mark Ruffalo has confirmed that there have been talks about his Bruce Banner/Hulk showing up in Disney+’s upcoming She-Hulk show.
The actor dropped the info during a panel at C2E2 over the weekend, where he was on hand to chat about all things Marvel with host Clare Kramer, who you may remember as the evil, mind-warping god Glory from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, among other things.
LaughingPlace.com was present as Ruffalo sat down to answer some pressing questions, and he mulled how he was feeling about where we left Bruce in the closing scenes of Avengers: Endgame. After admitting he’d still like Hulk and Thanos to have a rematch, the Dark Waters star was inevitably asked if we could see Hulk – Smart or Smash-flavored tbc! – pop up in Marvel and Disney+’s She-Hulk, which is now rumored to start filming in November.

The death of Iron Man in last year’s Avengers: Endgame was a big moment for the McU that left Marvel fans misty-eyed around the world, so it’s no surprise to hear that the loss of Tony Stark also came as a blow to Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo.
During a recent panel at C2E2 in Chicago, Ruffalo was asked who he thought delivered the best superhero performance, and after a bit of joking around with moderator Clare Kramer, the McU regular ultimately settled on his co-star Robert Downey Jr., saying:
“Robert. Robert’s my hero. His Iron Man is like definitive and he started all this. I always marvel at him when I’m working with him, so… I mean, he’s done it the longest and done it with the most class and grace and generosity so yeah, I’d say Robert and when he died, that broke me.

Though the future of the McU’s Hulk remains uncertain, Mark Ruffalo still has a few ideas for upcoming releases, one of which involves a fan-pleasing clash between two of the Marvel brand’s biggest stars.
The actor was recently in attendance at C2E2 in Chicago, where where he was asked by panel moderator Clare Kramer about the Professor Hulk persona. As you likely recall, Bruce Banner made the transformation into Professor Hulk, aka Smart Hulk, during the five-year time jump near the beginning of Avengers: Endgame, essentially resolving the hero’s internal battle with the Jade Giant offscreen.
When Kramer asked about the possibility of actually showing the emergence of Professor Hulk in a future film, Ruffalo seemed all for it, before quickly slipping in his suggestion for a Hulk vs. Wolverine showdown:

The cast of Clueless got together at Chicago's C2E2 expo this weekend to celebrate the 24th anniversary of the classic movie. Paul Rudd, who is approaching 50-years old, doesn't seem to age and, thanks to fellow castmate Breckin Myer, we may now finally know why. Rudd and Myer appeared on stage with co-stars Alicia Silverstone and Donald Faison and talked about making the movie along with Brittany Murphy, who sadly passed away ten years ago. Stacey Dash did not join the cast this weekend.
While taking questions from the enthusiastic crowd, Paul Rudd was asked how he never ages. The Avengers: Endgame star quickly quipped, "I'm 80-years-old on the inside. It's a mess underneath all this." The response got a laughs from his fellow Clueless castmates and the audience, but Breckin Myer took it one step further in explaining Rudd's youthful looks. He explains.

It’s been 20 years since Angel was on television and the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff garnered a very loyal cult following. Since it has been two decades, it’s about time that we revisit the lovelorn vampire, right? David Boreanaz thinks so too.
The actor appeared on The Talk Tuesday and when asked about the show he teased that one of TV’s favorite vampires will be returning.
“We’re coming up on 20 years. I mean, that’s amazing to have been blessed with a show like that and that’s where I really started my gig — this acting world,” said Boreanaz.
“I love that character,” Boreanaz added. “So, I will say there may be something coming up. I don’t want to give away much. I can say, it’s 20 years coming up this fall and we may have something in the works.”

The scoobies are back! Well, most of them are. The cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer had a mini-reunion at Wizard World Portland on Sunday and it brought back fond memories of their days at Sunnydale High School and the Hellmouth.
The titular slayer was not on hand unfortunately, but her fellow supernatural-hunting friends were. Her Bff Willow, Alyson Hannigan was on hand as well as her partner Amber Benson, who played her girlfriend Tara. James Marsters, who played the vampire we love to hate Spike was also on hand as well as Charisma Carpenter who played the resident diva Cordelia as well as Nicholas Brendon who portrayed Xander. Also in attendance were actors Julie Benz, Iyari Limon, Amy Acker, James Leary, Clare Kramer, and Alexis Denisof.
Many took to Instagram to post pics of the reunion. Carpenter posted a group pic with the caption, “Demons and vampires and scoobies oh my!

The several cast members of the classic shows Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel reunited over the weekend at Wizard World Portland to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Angel.

As the Oracle said in The Matrix Revolutions, “Everything that has a beginning has an end” – and so, too, must Gotham.
By now, you may have heard how the Batman prequel series will soon commence its final season, so it’s recommended you savor that bad boy for all it’s worth once it graces airwaves beginning this winter. Fortunately, though, two more episodes have been added to the tally, thereby making it a 12-chapter affair.
If you’re current on the show, then you’re aware of how Ben McKenzie has done more than just playing Jim Gordon. In fact, he’s even gotten in the director’s chair and lent to the creative process from a different perspective. And to the surprise of nobody, his input will continue until the very end.

Joss Whedon fans were left stunned this summer when it was announced that the Avengers director was rebooting his seminal supernatural TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with Whedon exec producing and Monica Owusu-Breen on showrunning duties. We don’t know much about the new series’ approach to the original material just yet, but it’s said that the central Slayer will be African-American.
The idea of resurrecting a beloved show like Buffy obviously didn’t go down well with a lot of people, but stars of the original have since come forward to support the reboot and to wish Whedon and his team all the best. The latest to do so is Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Buffy’s teen sister Dawn Summers from season 5 onwards.

With his days on The Walking Dead now behind him, it makes sense that actor Chandler Riggs be ready to move on to other gigs. In fact, it appears as though he’d very much like to make the jump from AMC’s most popular show to that of The CW’s.
We are, of course, talking about The Flash.
While recently speaking at a panel being conducted at Fandemic Tour Sacramento, Riggs expressed interest in meeting the Scarlet Speedster at some point in the not too distant future. Here’s what went down when he was asked if he’d prefer to be in a Marvel or DC production:
Riggs: “Honestly, I really like both, but The Flash is one of my favorite shows of all time. So I would say something DC.”
Panel moderator Clare Kramer: “There’s room for you on The Flash.”
Riggs: “Yeah, I hope so.

Joss Whedon’s magnum opus Buffy the Vampire Slayer hasn’t been on the air for 15 years, but there’s always talk of it coming back in some form. Obviously, what fans would really love is for the original cast and creative team to reconvene and make more of the same quality of the original series. However, in this age of TV reboots, such as The CW’s similarly supernatural Charmed, a complete redo of the concept could come about instead.
According to one cast member of the beloved show, though, this isn’t something that would be supported by the majority of Buffy‘s fanbase. Grrr arggg! Into every generation an excellent TV show is born: One show in all the world. The Chosen One.

The Joss Whedon masterpiece created several feminist icons, spoke to addiction struggles, portrayed the first lesbian sex scene on broadcast television, showed that vampires were sexy long before Twilight and made it ok to wear pink leather pants in public… well, sort of.
