At first glance, Homestead – from director Ben Smallbone – might seem like another run-of-the-mill doomsday prepper tale designed to validate hoarding canned goods and ammo. However, there’s more depth lurking beneath the surface.
When a nuclear bomb obliterates Los Angeles, former Green Beret Jeff Eriksson (Bailey Chase) takes his family to the Homestead—a secluded survival haven owned by his wealthy friend Ian Ross. With its self-sustaining gardens, stocked armoury, and endless food supplies, the compound is a prepper’s paradise. But Homestead isn’t simply about the comforts of bunkered survival; it digs into the darker side of fear-driven living and the steep ethical price of protecting oneself at all costs.
The story unfolds as a taut moral drama, centering on the conflict between Ian and his wife Jenna (Dawn Olivieri). Ian is adamant about keeping the gates closed to the desperate, starving masses gathering outside, fearing that helping them would jeopardise their resources.

Ben Smallbone is bringing a new and modern approach to the post-apocalyptic genre, and Dawn Olivieri is at the heart of it in Homestead. Smallbone is a filmmaker known for his work in the faith-based genre, having helmed numerous music videos for the group For King & Country, while also co-writing, directing and editing the thriller Priceless and the documentary Johnny Cash: The Redemption of an American Icon. Homestead is struggling early in its box office run. Set in a post-apocalyptic America, the movie follows Neal McDonough's Ian Ross, as he works to secure his family's safety after a devastating nuclear attack. McDonough previously starred in Yellowstone as Malcolm Beck, in Tulsa King as Cal Thresher, and in Minority Report as Officer Fletcher. This latest movie was inspired by the book Black Autumn by Jeff Kirkham and Jason Ross. It was released on December 20 and debuted to a weak box office outing.
According to a report by Deadline, in its second weekend, the thriller is continuing to struggle. It appeared in under 2,000 theaters domestically and took ninth place at the box office. After a 66% drop on Friday, it is expected to earn a three-day total of just $3 million, while ushering in $5.2 million over the five-day holiday weekend. That would mark a total of just $12.7 million for its full run so far.

Yellowstone's cast is going in a lot of different directions after working on the hit series. Some of them will stay in the universe by acting in the next installment of the Taylor Sheridan-created franchise. Though Yellowstone season 5 has ended, the series will be getting a sequel show starring Beth and Rip. While other stars from the series are expected to be featured, this means that at the very least, Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser will stay in the Yellowstone universe in their next major project.
Some of the show's ensemble members are relative newcomers, when other Yellowstone actors come from other established TV shows. Such is the case with Dawn Olivieri, who plays villain Sarah Atwood in the series. Ben Smallbone’s “Homestead” takes place in a world where foreigners detonate a nuclear bomb off the coast of Los Angeles, the protagonists are saved because they own a Tesla, Bitcoin is the only valuable currency, and the truth can only be told on Right Wing radio. For some people that’s a selling point. For many others, it’s a list of red flags.
It’s easy to think of films like “Homestead” as if they live on the fringe of mainstream media, but though this particular film isn’t a major studio release, they’re hardly uncommon. Hit movies like “Black Hawk Down” and “300” have shamelessly vilified non-white antagonists, portraying them as fodder for heroic, mostly white hunks to mow down with impunity, sometimes in dramatic slow-motion. “Forrest Gump” is the story of a man who does everything he’s told to do, like joining the Army...

Audiences can be very quick to judge TV characters, to the point that their first impression can often turn out to be entirely wrong, with the realization that they were great all along. This can easily happen to characters who oppose the protagonist in some way, as viewers naturally root for the lead and see anyone who is blocking their goals as a threat. However, as the characters' motivations become clearer, everyone soon comes to the realization that they harshly and unfairly judged them.
Many of the best TV characters ever started off unpopular yet managed to redeem themselves throughout the series. In some cases, annoying TV characters managed to become fan favorites as viewers got to know and understand their backstories, motivations, and likable characteristics. The Western genre used to be one of the most popular movie genres in the mid-20th century, but the craze eventually died out. Not nearly as many Western films have been made in the last few decades. However, the genre has seen a resurgence on TV in recent years. Shows like Yellowstone, Justified, and Deadwood have made cowboys and outlaws cool again, and proven that there's an audience for intriguing stories told within the Western genre.

New episodes of Yellowstone are right around the corner! Yellowstone season 5 part 2 premieres on Nov. 10, 2024. In fact, the new trailer for the series just dropped, too!
It’s been so long since the first half of Yellowstone season 5 ended on Jan. 1, 2023. Almost two years will have passed by the time all six episodes in season 5 part 2 air. And, unfortunately, you do have a fair bit of time until the show returns.
Luckily, we picked out seven shows like Yellowstone to watch while you wait for Yellowstone season 5 part 2! We didn’t include 1923 or 1883 for obvious reasons, but we highly recommend watching those, as well!
Tulsa King
We know Yellowstone fans, more often than not, are fans of creator Taylor Sheridan. Well, good news! Sheridan has a bunch of TV shows that you need to watch. Up first on the list is Tulsa King starring Sylvester Stallone. Garrett Hedlund, Andrea Savage,...

Yellowstone has become one of the biggest shows on television, as it should because the series is a brilliant piece of art, which deserves every praise it gets. Created by Taylor Sheridan, the neo-Western drama series revolves around the Dutton family who own the largest ranch in America. While there is a lot of infighting amongst the family they must all stand together to protect what’s there from several enemies. Yellowstone stars Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Luke Grimes, Kelsey Asbille, Wes Bentley, Jefferson White, and Ian Bohen. Now, that Yellowstone is ending soon with Part 2 of its Season 5, we are here to suggest some similar shows while you wait for the final Yellowstone episodes.

On The Rookie Season 2 Episode 17, Officer Nolan got thrown into the deep end with an undercover assignment and managing his criminal informant.
Only one of those things turned out to be a success.
One of Nolan's greatest strengths, his empathy, can also be a weakness, or at least an added obstacle. That sense of empathy allowed him to encourage Bianca to get clean and get a job.
Unfortunately, it also made it easy for her to get too attached.
Junkies aren't generally emotionally stable to begin with, so Bianca forming an unhealthy attachment to Nolan shouldn't have been a surprise.
But this was Nolan's first C.I., so it was all unchartered territory for him.
The upside was that Sgt. Grey understood what Nolan was dealing with and went out of his way to be supportive.

CBS’ S.W.A.T. is teasing subtraction by addition, with the casting of TV vet Bailey Chase.

In that pursuit, he will court Deacon (played by Jay Harrington) — who is seemingly forever-cash strapped (what now, the gutters need replacing??), and whose family has had more than their fill of S.W.A.T.-related drama — to join his firm.

Here’s the trailer for Walk. Ride. Rodeo., the true story being told by Netflix of Amberley Snyder, a nationally ranked barrel racer who was in a life-changing accident when her vehicle was flipped and she became paralyzed from the waist down.
She was wheelchair bound, but did not let that hold her back from her passion, and was able to retrain herself to ride horses again. It’s an incredible story that is akin to the story of Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm to a shark while surfing and was able to get back on her board and ride the waves again. I guess when you have that much talent and determination, and a love for what you do, nothing can stop you!
Spencer Locke (Resident Evil: Extinction & Afterlife) stars as Amberley Snyder, with a supporting cast that includes Missi Pyle, Bailey Chase (24: Legacy), and Sherri Shepherd.

Back in January, one of the things Patrick Bromley and I discussed on our episode of Horrigins was that there were a lot of amazing short films out there, but it can be hard for fans to keep up with all of the content that gets released over time. With that in mind, this writer thought it would be fun to turn the spotlight onto the short format horrors on the internet once a month with our new column, Daily Dead Salutes Your Shorts.
For this first installment, we have a terror-filled trio of short films, including Feeding Time from Matt Mercer (which was an official selection of Screamfest 2016), Jacob Johnston’s Kadence, and Furocious, by the directorial duo of Zachary Eglinton and Brandon Walz. So, sit back and enjoy some bite sized horror-fied treats, and be sure to check back next month for more great short films right here on Daily Dead!
