Pamela Anderson & Guy Pearce Eye Musical Feature ‘Queen Of The Falls’ – The Dish
Image
Exclusive: There’s an indie musical feature project titled Queen of the Falls that is coming together with Pamela Anderson and Guy Pearce set to headline.

The logline is for the most part under wraps, but is said to be a music-infused tale about two lovers on the run.

The project comes from filmmaking duo Rania Attieh and Daniel Garcia, who are both writing and directing. The two won the “Someone to Watch” Independent Spirt Award for their 2014 movie H.

Grammy winner Marius De Vries is on board to do the music and Celia Rowlson Hall will choreograph.

Attieh and Garcia’s H. played Venice, Sundance and Berlin. They also won the Nora Ephron Award at the Tribeca Film Festival for their film Initials S.G.

Queens of the Fall will be produced by Oscar-winning producer Mollye Asher and Shruti Ganguly (H. Initials S.G.).

Pearce is repped by CAA, Independent Talent Group and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern. The actor was recently nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars for Brady Corbet’s post-wwii epic The Brutalist, in which he played a crooked rich man who tasks Adrien Brody’s Hungarian immigrant architect with an impossible edifice. The role also earned Pearce a Golden Globe nom. The actor won a 2011 Emmy for HBO’s Mildred Pearce in the Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie category. Pierce recently completed Ned Crowley’s Western Killing Faith, and his many other film credits include L.A. Confidential and Memento.

Anderson starred in Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl, which world premiered at last year’s TIFF and was promptly acquired by Roadside Attractions for awards season, where the actress landed a Golden Globe nom and a SAG Award nom for Female Actor in a Drama. She starred opposite Liam Neeson in Paramount’s reboot of The Naked Gun, which is approaching $100 million at the global box office. The Baywatch star played Roxie Hart on Broadway in the 2022 production of Chicago.

‘Tuner’ Review: Dustin Hoffman and Leo Woodall Fix Pianos in an Offbeat Indie That’s Far Better Than It Sounds
Image
Dustin Hoffman and Leo Woodall make quite the pair in “Tuner.” Hoffman’s character, veteran piano technician Harry Horowitz, is losing his hearing, while his people-shy apprentice (played by “White Lotus” breakout Woodall) has a condition called hyperacusis, which obliges Niki to wear earplugs at all times. Even the slightest sounds bother him, but despite that, this pair are the best piano tuners in town.

“It’s not about hearing. It’s about feeling,” Harry explains, and the same goes for Daniel Roher’s pitch-perfect indie drama, which cleverly plays our emotions without resorting to cheap manipulation. You might recognize Roher as the Oscar-winning director of “Navalny,” although his genre-straddling first narrative feature couldn’t be more different.

A laid-back rom-com crossed with a low-key crime thriller, combined with something more serious — unafraid to ask existential questions about overcoming a handicap that directly impacts one’s art — “Tuner” feels like...

Every Track from Björk’s ‘Post’ Ranked
Image
The meaning behind the title of Björk’s 1995 album Post is twofold. The album was, of course, a postscript to 1993’s Debut, the singer’s first solo effort following the dissolution of her band the Sugarcubes, but it was also designed as a mixtape of messages to friends and family back in Iceland. The blazer Björk dons on the album’s cover, photographed by legendary shutterbug and frequent collaborator Stéphane Sednaoui, was created by British fashion designer Hussein Chalayan and made out of waterproof envelope paper bearing the markings of the Royal Mail.

Each song on Post has a distinct sound—trip-hop bumps up against house, industrial rock, and jazz—and an intended recipient. The grimy “Army of Me” is a kick in the pants to Björk’s little brother; the subterranean “Enjoy” is a love letter to London; the dubby “Possibly Maybe” is a farewell to Sednaoui, whom she...

The End
Image
There’s a startling contrast to The End, introduced in its first minutes. A gloomy, dusty salt mine is soundtracked by light flutes and strings. Inside the mine’s cavernous depths, Father (Michael Shannon), Mother (Tilda Swinton) and Son (George MacKay) live in an opulent mansion, where paintings and books line every room and hallway. Through hopeful song, they affirm that “together our future is bright”. But what future is there at the end of the world?

Joshua Oppenheimer’s offbeat riff on post-apocalyptic Earth reveals its circumstances in a slow trickle. There’s word of fires that have consumed the planet, then the fossil fuels that ignited them. At first glance, a musical seems like an unusual shift for Oppenheimer, best known for his pair of unflinching documentaries on the anti-communist Indonesian mass murders of the mid-20th century, The Act Of Killing and The Look Of Silence. But like the perpetrators in those,...

Tilda Swinton at an event for Amore (2009)
The End | Trailer released for apocalyptic musical starring George Mackay and Tilda Swinton
Tilda Swinton at an event for Amore (2009)
Tilda Swinton and George Mackay star in apocalyptic musical The End, and the first trailer has landed. Right here.

Actor George Mackay is set return to the world of big screen musicals with The End, which is, er, joyously set during the apocalypse.

The cast also includes Bronagh Gallagher, Tim McInnerny and Lennie James.

The songs were written by Marius De Vries and Josh Schmidt. De Vries won a BAFTA and an Ivor Novello award for his score to Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film Romeo + Juliet, while The End marks the feature debut of Schmidt. Joshua Oppenheimer, best known for the award-winning documentaries The Act Of Killing (2012) and The Look Of Silence (2014) directed the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Rasmus Heisterberg.

George MacKay is no stranger to movie musicals. In 2013 he starred in Dexter Fletcher’s film adaptation of Stephen Greenhorn’s ebullient Proclaimers musical Sunshine On Leith...

Tilda Swinton sings through the apocalypse in Neon’s ‘The End’ trailer [Watch]
Image
What if you were trapped in a bunker with Tilda Swinton, and she kept breaking out into song?

That’s (an extremely reductive version of) the premise for “The End,” director Joshua Oppenheimer’s oddball post-apocalyptic musical, for which Neon released a trailer on Monday. The trailer teases a romantic musical set in a billionaire family’s bunker after the end of the world they helped cause, with elegant sets and an unusual tone.

The film is Academy Award-nominated documentary filmmaker Oppenheimer’s (“The Act of Killing”) first narrative feature, which he wrote with Rasmus Heisterberg and produced with Signe Byrge Sorensen and Swinton. The film stars Academy Award winner Swinton (“Michael Clayton”), George Mackay (“1917”), Moses Ingram (“The Queen’s Gambit”), Bronagh Gallagher (“The Commitments”), Tim McInnerny (“One Day”), Lennie James (“The Walking Dead”), and Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon (“Nocturnal Animals”). The music is by Joshua Schmidt (“Midwestern Gothic...

The End (TIFF) Review: Michael Shannon & Tilda Swinton In A Post-Apocalyptic Musical?
Image
Plot: Many years after an apocalyptic event they may have contributed to, a wealthy family survives in a luxurious underground fortress.

Review: One of the best things about attending a festival like TIFF is that you often walk into movies without preconceived notions. Films playing at the festival are so new that they barely have any stills available, much less any trailers, so you walk into them pretty much blind. The downside is that, once in a while, you end up seeing a movie that sounds intriguing, but pretty much right off the bat, once you see a few minutes of it, you’re hit by a sinking feeling that, “oh no, this might not be for me.”

Indeed, The End wasn’t for me. While I’m a sucker for movies about the apocalypse, and the premise (and dream cast) are intriguing, documentarian Joshua Oppenheimer’s narrative debut is a slog to get through.

‘The End’ Review: Tilda Swinton And Michael Shannon Sing Away The Apocalypse And The Songs Are Pretty Good – Telluride Film Festival
Image
Musicals are really in vogue at the fall film festivals this year. At Venice the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux will have stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga singing and dancing to the standards. At Telluride, Emilia Pérez has the bug, as does the country-tinged The Easy Kind. Plus there is the Robbie Williams creation Better Man, from The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey; and Pharrell Williams’ Lego biopic Piece By Piece that are keeping us coming out of the theatre humming the tunes. And now, world premiering today at Telluride is The End, perhaps the most unlikely storyline for a musical of all (well at least until Joker starts warbling “That’s Entertainment”). It is set after the world has ended due to a cataclysmic environmental disaster and the only people left on earth are a very wealthy family –partially responsible for it — living in a plush underground bunker.

Dicks: The Musical Cast And Creative Team On Perfecting God & Working With Megan Thee Stallion
Image
A24's independent studio proves its prowess in a new genre with "Dicks: The Musical," a hilarious and depraved comedy with outstanding musical numbers. The film shares similarities with "The Parent Trap" as long-lost twins reunite their parents, exploring themes of toxic masculinity and unexpected humor. Director Larry Charles and writers Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp discuss the film's energy, originality, and the talent of Megan Thee Stallion, who brings the perfect song and performance to the screen.

A24 may be best known for its horror films, but Dicks: The Musical is here to prove the independent studio's prowess in a whole new genre. Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp adapted their own Ucb one-act production into a movie script, which was then read and picked up by Borat director Larry Charles. Together, with some truly outstanding musical numbers courtesy of Karl Saint Lucy and Marius de Vries, they have cobbled...

‘Dicks: The Musical’ Creator-Stars Talk Megan Thee Stallion’s Show-Stopping Number and Whether Their Songs Out-Profane ‘Book of Mormon’
Image
The most appreciative audience for “Dicks: The Musical” may be the Venn-diagram overlap between viewers who think the envelope for raunchy language in R-rated comedies doesn’t get pushed nearly hard enough and people who saw “Les Miserables” on Broadway three times. In other words, the warning not for every taste has never applied more. But the movie musical will hit an especially sweet spot for folks who want filth and subversion with their show tunes, and who like to hear the classic tropes of musical theater being embraced even as they’re being thoroughly upended.

The weekend box office indicates that “Dicks” is quickly finding that audience, with Variety’s report saying the outrageous film “was a bright spot at the specialty box office, generating one of the best limited openings of the year.” In the meantime, a full soundtrack album came out Friday, for anyone wanting a pre-filmgoing...

Megan Mullally Found Her Unique Voice For Dicks: The Musical By Practicing With Nick Offerman
Image
Dicks: The Musical is a wild comedy film with stellar songwriting and all-in performances praised in initial reviews. Megan Mullally's unique speaking and singing voice in the film perfectly complements its joyful and fun feel, and she fought to keep it despite initial objections. The film's sense of liveness, theatricality, and inclusive wackiness creates a joint endeavor of having a wonderful time and enjoying the humor together, as described by composer Marius de Vries.

A24 has jumped into the world of musicals with a bang thanks to Dicks: The Musical. Adapted from a 2014 Ucb one-act production by Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp with songs by Jackson, Sharp, and Karl Saint Lucy, Dicks: The Musical is as wild as its underground comedy origins might suggest (not to mention that Borat director Larry Charles was at the helm of the film). Behind the ‘Demented’ but Straight-Faced Songs and Score of ‘Dicks: The Musical’ With Marius de Vries and Karl Saint Lucy
Image
The songs and score of the new film “Dicks: The Musical” are deadpan, but about as far away from dead and humanly and musically possible. It sounds like a fully fleshed-out Broadway musical brought to vibrant life on the big screen, even though it went directly from being a two-man mini-show in a New York comedy club to a movie with a traditonal-sounding, fully orchestrated song score, the scope of which is matched only by the gleeful vulgarity of the lyrics.

Creator-screenwriter-stars Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson wrote the lyrics for the songs. But when it came to lending them total-earworm melodies, or production values that sound like the Great White Way or golden-era Hollywood, those responsibilities fell to Marius de Vries and Karl Saint Lucy. The latter co-writer has been in on the job with Sharp and Jackson since they first birthed a miniaturized version of “Dicks” (then known...

‘Dicks: The Musical’ Joins Festival Fare ‘She Came To Me’, ‘The Royal Hotel’, ‘Strange Way Of Life’ & More In Lively Indie Weekend – Specialty Preview
Image
A wacky film based on a stage show by comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, Dicks: The Musical – a riff on The Parent Trap with two adult men as the starring twins — opens in seven theaters in NY, LA and San Francisco on a crowded specialty weekend as theatrical releases of fall film festival titles accelerates.

Dicks, from A24, developed by Chernin Entertainment, is, according to press notes, a first “adult musical comedy” for both. (It’s Chernin’s second musical after hit The Greatest Showman.) Directed by Larry Charles, it stars the two creators Jackson and Sharp as self-obsessed businessmen who discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents. They’re joined by an A-list roster of Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Bowen Yang and Megan Thee Stallion.

Dicks: The Musical Review | A24 Really Said Gay Rights!
Image
Dicks: The Musical is veritable proof that there's really no other studio making movies like A24. It's one thing to adapt a stage musical for the screen, and another altogether to do so with a story that not only plays by its own rules and purposefully challenges its audiences, but also, without apology, doesn't care what you might think about it at the end of the day. In this regard, the "A" in A24 really should stand for "audacity" because, as the studio's first-ever musical movie, Dicks is as daring and wickedly funny as it is horny and heartfelt.

Directed by Larry Charles, Dicks: The Musical is an adaptation of Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson's 30-minute Off-Broadway musical, F***ing Identical Twins. In addition to writing the screenplay, Sharp and Jackson star as Craig and Trevor, respectively, the two top-earning salesmen of a robot vacuum parts company run by Megan Thee Stallion's Gloria.

Karl Saint Lucy & Marius de Vries On The Songs & Music Of Dicks: The Musical
Image
"Dicks: The Musical" started as a 30-minute Ucb show, but expanded into a full-length film with the help of writer Aaron Jackson, composer Karl Saint Lucy, and director Larry Charles. Karl and Marius collaborated on the music for the film, with Karl writing the melodies and harmonies, and Marius serving as the music producer and orchestrator. The film features catchy and hilarious songs performed by a cast that includes Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, and Megan Thee Stallion, with Megan Thee Stallion joining the project late and bringing her own unique style to her song.

Dicks: The Musical is somehow even more wild than its name implies, making A24’s first musical feel like a big swing for the production company. It’s a gamble that audiences will likely be glad A24 took; what began roughly a decade ago as a musical performed in a cramped Upright Citizens Brigade theater in...

‘Dicks: The Musical’ Review: Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp Court Cult Status With Outrageously Amusing ‘Parent Trap’ Riff
Image
The first time director Larry Charles was invited to the Toronto International Film Festival, he brought along a little something called Borat, which, despite enduring an extended projector breakdown 20 minutes into its premiere screening, emerged as a word-of-mouth sensation. Now, some 17 years later, Charles has returned to the festival’s Midnight Madness section with Dicks: The Musical, which not only screened without a technical hitch, but emerges as a certified wave-maker in its own right.

Created by and starring Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, making the transition from a 30-minute, six-song play called F*cking Identical Twins — mounted in the basement home of New York’s Upright Citizens Brigade — to a feature-length, all-singing, all-dancing, naughty goof on The Parent Trap, the movie packs an infectious albeit ephemeral punch.

But if it can’t quite sustain the profanely provocative tone, neither does it settle for half-measures, with a supporting cast including Nathan Lane,...

‘Dicks: The Musical’ Song ‘All Love Is Love’ Released by A24 Following Film’s Toronto Premiere
Image
Hot off “Dicks: The Musical’s” premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, A24 has released the song “All Love is Love” from the film.

Performed by Aaron Jackson, Josh Sharp, Bowen Yang, Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally and featuring vocalist Lauren Evans, “All Love Is Love” is one of the musical’s many songs that could be submitted for original song consideration at the Oscars.

The song was composed by “Moulin Rouge’s” Marius de Vries and Karl Saint Lucy, and co-written with the film’s writers and stars Jackson and Sharp.

“Dicks: the Musical” is a wild and raunchy comedy starring Jackson and Sharp as antagonistic businessmen and long-lost twins with a plan to trick their separated parents. Lane and Mullally play the separated parents who the twins try to trick into getting back together. Yang features as none other than God himself, while rapper Megan Thee Stallion stars as the twins’ suited-up boss,...

A24 Wants to Make ‘Dicks: The Musical’ a Best Song Contender for Megan Thee Stallion — And It Should Be
Image
Lyrics that include the words “dick,” “fuck” and “pussy” are not the typical wholesome, family content the Academy’s Music Branch tends to recognize. But occasionally, they have allowed a couple to slip through. A24’s “Dicks: The Musical,” the opening night Midnight Madness at TIFF, has an onslaught of hilarious and catchy tunes that I wish the Oscars would be brave enough to nominate.

With so many hilarious tracks to choose from, including “Gay Old Life” and “The Sewer Song,” Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion brings down the house with her delivery on the rap and dance number “Out-Alpha the Alpha.” It could and should be one of the many songs to consider for this year’s Academy Awards, and distributor A24 confirms they’ll submit the movie for Oscar consideration.

Toronto Rising Star: How Composer Karl Saint Lucy Created a New Type of Movie Musical Experience for R-Rated ‘Dicks’
Image
“As far as I was concerned, it was like, ‘I’m just doing this dumb show with my friends,’” remembers composer Karl Saintt Lucy of Fucking Identical Twins, the one-act off-Broadway musical that ran in 2015. Over a half decade later that, that “dumb show” is now one of the more anticipated openings at TIFF. Retitled Dicks: The Musical, the A24 movie is an R-rated dirtbag version of The Parent Trap where two megalomaniacs (Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson) discover they are twins and try to get their parents — played by Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally — back together.

Graduating from NYU’s Tisch Schools of Theater with a Mfa in Musical Theatre Writing, St Lucy, who uses they/them pronouns, first met Sharp and Jackson, the stars and co-writers of Dicks, at Story Pirates, a theater program of largely aspiring comedians that travel around to elementary schools putting on improv shows.

‘Dicks: The Musical’ Review: Aaron Jackson & Josh Sharp’s Unforgettably Zany Film Debut – Toronto Film Festival
Image
Flesh-eating sewer monsters, genitals with wings, grave robbing, two confused “identical twins” and 90 minutes of sexual innuendo is what you can expect from comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp’s stage show-turned-movie. Directed by Larry Charles and written by and starring the duo, the film also features Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Megan Thee Stallion and Bowen Yang. As a viewer, I often wondered how the hell this got turned into the movie because it is so outrageous. Thankfully, it succeeds at being fun and funny because anything less would have amounted to torture.

In a wicked exploration of twinhood and identity, we’re introduced to the not-so-identical twins, Craig (Sharp) and Trevor (Jackson). These two have a rather crazed introduction, diving headfirst into the world of aggressive heterosexuality. Although they strut around NYC’s corporate scene under the reign of CEO Gloria (Megan Thee Stallion), the film juggles time periods...

A24 Drops First Trailer for Crass Musical Satire ‘Dicks: The Musical’ (Video)
Nathan Lane at an event for Swing vote - La voix du coeur (2008)
Get ready for musical comedy earworms that aren’t safe for work. “Dicks: The Musical,” indie distributor A24’s first-ever musical comedy, is coming to theaters Sept. 29 — and its first trailer previews hilariously absurd performances from Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Bowen Yang, Megan Thee Stallion and creative duo Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, who also wrote the script and book.

Larry Charles of “Seinfeld” and “Borat” fame directs.

As announced Thursday, “Dicks” — renamed from original title “F***ing Identical Twins” — will make its World Premiere as the opening night film of Midnight Madness at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The official synopsis of the release reads: “Two self-obsessed businessmen (writers Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp) discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents, in this riotously funny and depraved musical from comedy icon Larry Charles also starring Megan Thee Stallion, Nathan Lane,...

TIFF 2023: Patricia Arquette’s ‘Gonzo Girl’ Discovery Opening Night, Midnight Madness To Fire Up With Larry Charles’ ‘Dicks: The Musical’
Image
The Toronto Film Festival pulled the curtain off its lineup for this year’s Discovery and Midnight Madness sections with notable titles respectively teeing off both programs’ opening nights: Patricia Arquette’s Gonzo Girl and Borat director Larry Charles’ Dicks: The Musical from A24.

The Midnight Madness section counts 10 features, seven of which are world premieres. The Discovery lineup, which primarily boasts world and international premieres, includes 26 titles. Notably, 13 female filmmakers representing 50% of the total program are featured in this year’s Discovery; that lineup is known for being a window to contemporary world cinema with first and second movies from frosh filmmakers. With Midnight Madness films, it’s anything goes.

“We’re excited to be showcasing new voices, audacious vision, and genre-bending cinema,” said Anita Lee, TIFF Chief Programming Officer. “TIFF’s Discovery and Midnight Madness programs for 2023 will once again prove to be the ultimate destination for tastemakers and experience seekers.

Dicks: The Musical – Everything You Need to Know About A24’s R-Rated Parent Trap
Image
A24, the indie studio behind acclaimed films like Moonlight, Lady Bird, and Uncut Gems, is venturing into new territory with its first ever musical comedy. The film, which was originally titled F*cking Identical Twins, has been re-titled Dicks: The Musical. Here’s everything you need to know about this outrageous and hilarious project.

The Plot

Dicks: The Musical is based on a two-man stage show written and performed by comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp at the Upright Citizens Brigade in 2014. The show is a parody of The Parent Trap, the classic story of identical twin sisters who switch places to reunite their divorced parents. However, in Dicks: The Musical, the twins are adult brothers who work as business rivals. They discover their true identity and decide to swap lives in order to get their parents back together.

The Cast

The film boasts an impressive and eclectic cast of actors,...

Margaret Qualley ‘Would Really Love’ to Be on Broadway
Image
Margaret Qualley is ready for her Broadway debut.

The “Sanctuary” actress told IndieWire during a recent interview that she would “love to” star in a play or musical after bringing playwright Micah Bloomberg’s script to the screen. Qualley also earned an Emmy nomination for her turn as dancer and choreographer Ann Reinking in limited series “Fosse/Verdon” about Broadway legend Bob Fosse and actress Gwen Verdon.

“I love doing it, I just have never done it [on Broadway],” Qualley said. “I actually would really love to.”

Qualley is set to star in the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers biopic, “Fred & Ginger,” alongside Jamie Bell. The film is written by Arash Amel and to be directed by Jonathan Entwistle, set to track Astaire and Rogers’ career spanning 10 movies together from 1933 to 1949. “La La Land” music producer Marius de Vries will work alongside Tony-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon (“Mj the Musical”) and Grammy-winning songwriters...

Paddington’s Paul King To Direct Tom Holland As Fred Astaire In New Film
Image
We've known for a few years that there are dueling Fred Astaire films in development — one starring Tom Holland playing the legendary entertainer, the other featuring Jamie Bell as Astaire and Margaret Qualley as Ginger Rogers. Both are seeing some new moves today, with The Hollywood Reporter bringing word that the Holland film now has Paddington's Paul King as director and Lee Hall re-writing the script.

The untitled, Holland-starring film has Lee Hall also now on board as writer. It'll focus on Astaire and his sister, Adele Astaire. The two were inseparable for more than 20 years, moving out of a simple Midwestern vaudeville act in the early part of the 20th Century to Broadway and London’s West end in the 1920s. Adele Astaire was initially the face of the act but eventually, Fred Astaire’s consummate stage skills eclipsed hers. The duo parted in 1932 when his sister married, which was a blow to Fred,...

Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers Biopic With Jamie Bell & Margaret Qualley Dances To The EFM With Black Bear, 30West, UTA & ‘La La Land’ Producer
Image
Exclusive: Black Bear International has launched international sales on Fred & Ginger, the musical about the passionate and explosive relationship between Hollywood dance legends, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

The project was formerly set up at Amazon but is hitting the open market with Black Bear and financier 30West (The Triangle Of Sadness) now aboard. UTA Independent Film Group and 30West will co-rep U.S. rights.

As was previously known, BAFTA-winner Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) will play Astaire, the technically-driven perfectionist, opposite Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) as the naturally gifted Rogers. The film is aiming to start production later this year.

Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F*cking World) will direct from a script by writer Arash Amel (The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare).

Hollywood icons Astaire and Rogers starred in ten movies together, starting with Flying Down to Rio in 1933 and ending with The Barkleys of Broadway...

The ceremony highlights the best feature, short, and television documentaries, pitting blockbusters like “The Beatles: Get Back” and “Moonage Daydream” against smaller Oscar contenders like “Descendant” and “Fire of Love.” The ceremony serves as an early battleground in the Best Documentary Feature race, so it’s a can’t-miss event for Oscar watchers.

The Soundtracks of Baz Luhrmann’s Films, Ranked
Baz Luhrmann in Gatsby le Magnifique (2013)
No discussion of Baz Luhrmann’s films – and his maximalist, hyper-sensory style – is complete without mentioning their equally more-is-more approach to music. With the help of his longtime music supervisor Anton Monsted (who started out as his assistant on 1996’s “Romeo + Juliet”), the Australian director has become synonymous with era-defying, genre-compounding pop soundtracks that infuse his films’ historical settings with contemporary sensibilities.

That trademark first emerged in the 90’s-grunge soundtrack of “Romeo + Juliet” and eventually evolved into the mash-up mania of this year’s “Elvis.” Like “The Great Gatsby” and “Moulin Rouge!” before it, the box office hit blends the King’s classic tunes with reimagined and original songs by some of today’s biggest artists.

In honor of Luhrmann’s latest, TheWrap presents a ranking of his films by soundtrack. (Note: “Australia” and “Strictly Ballroom” do not have long enough soundtracks to merit inclusion.)
