It seems as though movie fans in the U.S. are gearing up for the July 4 holiday by watching a classic sci-fi movie that spawned a sequel two decades later. As of July 29, Will Smith’s alien epic Independence Dayis climbing the streaming charts nearly three decades after its theatrical release. According to FlixPatrol, Independence Day has now reached the No. 12 spot among all movies streaming on Hulu as of July 29.
The Roland Emmerich-directed movie is likely to continue to climb the streaming charts as July 4 approaches. Released in 1996 and co-written by Emmerich and Dean Devlin, Independence Day dominated the box office that summer, taking in $817 million against a budget of $75 million.

The moment John Burns stepped through the doors of the Sunshine Cab Company, his days were numbered. Things seemed good at the start; in the very first episode of Taxi, Burns, a country bumpkin who had just arrived in the big city, almost immediately got a job as a cabbie. But it was all downhill from there.
Throughout Season One, Burns appeared less and less, and in some episodes, he barely spoke at all. There were only two episodes that saw him lead the story: one in which he gets married to a woman he just met, and another focused around a dinner party with him, his new wife, Alex Reiger (Judd Hirsch) and Latka Gravas (Andy Kaufman). Beyond that, he was usually stuck playing seventh fiddle in a cast of seven.
It was little wonder then that when Taxi returned for Season Two, Burns was gone, never to be mentioned again.

Actor Will Smith has given us some memorable movie characters: Agent J in Men in Black, post-apocalyptic survivor Robert Neville in I am a Legend, Chris Gardner in The Pursuit of Happyness, and his Oscar-winning turn as Richard Williams in King Richard. The man was considered a major box-office draw back in the 90s and is loved by his fans for showcasing a wide range on-screen. Now, just in time for the 4th of July, his iconic film Independence Day has found a new free home at Tubi.
The film, directed by Roland Emmerich, follows disparate groups of people: a geek, a pilot, the US President, and a group of ragtag survivors, who converge in the Nevada desert in the aftermath of a worldwide attack by a powerful extraterrestrial race with their advanced weaponry. With the other people of the world, they launch a counterattack on July 4—Independence Day in the United States.

Heather Burns is interested in competing for the “Miss Congeniality” crown again for a third time.
In an interview with People during the premiere of her latest film, “The Best You Can” at the 2025 Tribeca Festival, Burns spoke about her interest in a third “Miss Congeniality’ film. “I would love it. That was one of the best experiences of my life,” said Burns, who played Cheryl Frasier in the film, known as Miss Rhode Island in the pageant. She added, “It was so much fun making both of those films. I’m actually here with one of the other actresses. Melissa De Sousa, she played Miss New York, she’s my date tonight, which is wonderful.”
Even though it’s been 25 years since the first “Miss Congeniality” film hit theaters, certain cast members stayed in touch after filming. “I made lifelong friends with Sandra Bullock,” said Burns. “It’s just a dream.

One of the most popular original shows produced by the USA Network was "White Collar," which ran for six seasons from 2009 to 2014. The show saw notorious con artist Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer) agree to serve as a full-time consultant for the FBI in apprehending other white collar criminals. This leads to an unlikely partnership between Caffrey and FBI Special Agent Peter Burke (Tim DeKay), who reluctantly works with Caffrey in investigating crooks around New York City. "White Collar" quickly proved successful with audiences, with fans lauding the uneasy dynamic between Caffrey and Burke, while singling out Bomer's standout performance.
With its relatively light-hearted tone and odd couple procedural partnership, "White Collar" has plenty of shows that feel similar to it. Many of these shows also aired on the USA Network, echoing its tone and production values, while some just focus on a mismatched pairing. Here are the 12 best TV shows...

It was a classic late-Friday news dump: Amazon confirmed that Étoile, the splashy ballet-themed Prime Video dramedy from the Emmy-winning team of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) had been canceled after one season. The timing was curious: the news broke on June 6, just one week before Emmy voting was set to begin.
Although Étoile has been canceled, the campaign continues. There are billboards and trade ads touting the positive reviews and making a play for votes. Given the publicity surrounding Étoile and the Palladinos' track record (they have 10 Emmys in 24 bids between them), there's a chance that when nominations come out on July 15, Étoile could make the cut. And if it did, it wouldn't be an outlier.
Four years ago, in July 2021, Lovecraft Country received a whopping 18 Emmy nominations for its first and only season, leaving many stunned that a canceled show nabbed the fifth most...

Every so often, a story appears that feels like a quiet, narrative-driven indie title. It’s not about grand spectacle, but about the small, intricate mechanics of human connection. The Best You Can is one such story. We first meet Cynthia, a urologist whose life has become a dedicated mission to care for her husband, Warren.
He is a brilliant man, a former legal mind from the Watergate era, now drifting into the fog of dementia. Her love for him is palpable, but so is the quiet hum of her own life being put on hold. Elsewhere in the city, there is Stan, a security guard whose own life map feels incomplete. He’s an underachiever wrestling with a disconnected relationship with his musician daughter, Sammi.
These two characters are on entirely separate paths until a late-night alarm at Cynthia’s house acts as a catalyst, forcing their stories to intersect.

One of the great misfortunes of human life is the fact that much of it is spent in a constant state of worry. Are we doing the right things to reach our potential? Is it too late to start something new, or redo it all? These relatable queries are at the heart of writer-director Michael J. Weithorn’s modestly scaled dramedy “The Best You Can,” an optimistic film that feels truthful about aging, even if it doesn’t say anything we haven’t heard before.
Then again, you can’t really blame a movie for not formulating a brand-new answer to the existential dread around that old question, “How the hell did old age arrive so soon?” (It goes without saying that the definition of “old” depends on whom you ask.) Instead, it feels fairer to acknowledge and praise the lived-in textures that Weithorn fashions, a sense of authenticity that...

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick bring their vivid screen presence and expert timing to The Best You Can, elevating this low-key, Tribeca-premiering dramedy. With strong performances and a fresh premise about an unexpected friendship in middle age, but far too many creaky comic tropes, the uneven film is always watchable but never pops off the screen in a gripping way.
It’s the second feature written and directed by Michael J. Weithorn, a co-creator of The King of Queens and a veteran writer on other sitcoms. It’s simply descriptive and not a disparagement to say that with its often strained plot and quick-hit sitcom timing, the film is most likely to appeal to an undemanding audience and an older demographic.
Sedgwick plays Cynthia, whose brilliant husband, Warren (Judd Hirsch, reliably on point), once on the staff of the Watergate committee, is now 83 and sliding into dementia. At the start...

Rather remarkably, “The Best You Can” represents the first time real-life spouses Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon have been onscreen together in 20 years. And if their reunion is just as easygoing and unpretentious as their beloved at-home TikToks, well, is that really anything to complain about?
Sedgwick’s Cynthia seems, at first, to be living a pretty ideal life. She and her brilliant husband, Warren (Judd Hirsch), have a gorgeous home in Brooklyn, and she works as a successful urologist while he rests on the laurels of a celebrated career as a Watergate prosecutor. But there are cracks, which get wider every time Warren forgets where he is, or what he’s working on. And these fissures soon make space for Stan (Bacon), a security guard who patrols Cynthia’s neighborhood.

Making its world premiere in the Spotlight Narrative section of the Tribeca Festival, The Best You Can represents the first major onscreen teaming of real-life husband and wife Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick since 2004’s The Woodsman, and they remain the best reason to see this small but engaging character dramedy about boomers fighting life passing them by. It will also largely appeal to that similar demographic. Nothing wrong with that.

Netflix has unveiled a new film with “The Eternaut” lead Ricardo Darín, Argentina’s biggest star, and another by popular director Marcos Carnevale (“Elsa and Fred”), starring Oscar Martínez (“Official Competition”).
“Lo dejamos acá” stars Darín and Diego Paretti, another big Argentine player, in a movie about a pragmatic psychoanalyst (Darín) who begins to distrust traditional psychological methods, crossing ethical lines with his patients. Everything seems to work – until a creatively blocked writer (Peretti) enters his practice.
Produced by Darín’s label Kenya Films, in a pedigree creative package “Lo dejamos acá” is helmed by Hernán Goldfrid, who directed Darín in box office hit “Thesis of a Homicide” and co-directed “Caught” as well as one of HBO Latin America’s best series ever, “The Bronze Garden.” It is written by Emanuel Diez, who co-wrote Juan José Campanella’s “The Envoys” and Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat’s “El Encargado” (“The One in Charge”) and “Nada,...

Okay, now Kristen Stewart is just showing off.
The Oscar nominated “Spencer” star steps behind the camera, writing and directing “The Chronology of Water,” which premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. A portrait of pain, rebirth and reclamation, the film’s heartbeat comes from Stewart’s skillful and natural filmmaking. It is bolstered by two veteran actors we haven’t seen do something like this in years, Jim Belushi and Thora Birch.
Adapted from Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir, it recounts her story of going from a champion swimmer, to an addict, and later a writer. Stewart’s directorial debut has an avant-garde sensibility that’s part “The Basketball Diaries,” part Terrence Malick reverie, with a dash of Jim Jarmusch’s cool restraint and an undercurrent of rebellion that flows through it. The film benefits by being made from a female perspective that never shies...

Bill Hader and John Mulaney are among the most prolific performer-writer duos in Saturday Night Live history. But for all their accomplishments together, the pair did find their sketches eventually overstayed their welcome.
Stefon is arguably SNL's most famous character of the past 20 years, and it's all thanks to Hader and Mulaney. The hyper-specific character served as a prime example of the kind of comedy Hader and Mulaney gravitated toward, even if not everyone at Saturday Night Live felt the same way.

When Max Mutchnick and David Kohan first partnered on “Will & Grace,” they paved the way with a fresh sitcom that was immediately embraced by queer communities. Now, over two decades later, the duo hopes to reinvent the genre once again with Hulu’s “Mid-Century Modern.”
“I hope we’re able to be a show that breaks the mold of a multicam a little bit in the way that we get to sound a little bit more like the world sounds,” Mutchnick told TheWrap. “The gift of working at Hulu is that we got a chance to graduate to a language and a sound and a cadence that really is more like what we sound like. One of the most memorable highlights of “Thank You Very Much,” Alex Braverman’s consistently engaging documentary about comedy legend Andy Kaufman, doesn’t directly involve Kaufman at all.
Well, technically it does — but in the circuitous, convoluted way that only he could design. It’s an audio recording of actor Judd Hirsch, who is so furious he seems ready to explode. His complaint? That a two-bit, no-talent buffoon named Tony Clifton has taken over the set of his 1970s sitcom “Taxi,” which co-starred Kaufman. The fact that Hirsch knows Clifton is one of Kaufman’s alter egos hasn’t remotely mitigated the problem; he’s genuinely angry at Clifton — a guy who doesn’t, in any traditional sense, actually exist.
If there is a moment that distills Kaufman’s unique genius, surely this is it. In other hands, the whole situation would look like a dopey and inexcusably indulgent prank.

When a new series receives the James Burrows stamp of approval, it’s almost guaranteed to be a hysterical ride. After all, the iconic television director has been at the forefront of some of the most recognizable sitcoms in history, including “Friends,” “Cheers,” “Frasier” and a significant number of episodes of “Will & Grace.” The sitcom genre has seen better days with the invention of streaming services that have practically made the format obsolete, but Burrows keeps chugging along when he finds a show worth investing his talents in.

Say what you will about the final Seinfeld episode — namely, that it sucks — but at least it had a proper finale. While TV networks can be cutthroat about axing new shows with low ratings, when they cancel a long-running show — say, five seasons or more — they usually give the creators a heads-up so they can plan accordingly.
And, typically, the creators use that final season to build up to a climax and resolution. Say, a big wedding, a surprise pregnancy or a character’s unexpected revelation that gives new meaning and depth to the series. Or they can just call all their old guest stars and parade them into a courtroom set for an unsatisfying glorified clip show offering no new laughs (that Seinfeld finale is truly terrible).
The point is, it’s good to know things are ending, and the long-running sitcoms below clearly never saw that axe falling.

Jessica Chastain and Adam Driver are getting fancy for Apple’s latest acquisition, The Dealer, an upcoming drama series about the high-end art market and the eccentric visionaries behind the displays. Apple TV+ snagged The Dealer from competitors after a heated bidding war, giving the project produced by the A Doll’s House, Part 2 trio of Sam Gold, Lucas Hnath, and Sarah Lunnie, a straight-to-series order.
Sam Gold directs The Dealer from a screenplay by Lucas Hnath. According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, the show presents a “biting exploration of power, class, seduction and culture set inside the glittering world of the high-end art market, told through the eyes of an aspiring super gallerist, played by Jessica Chastain, and the tangled relationship with her most gifted and unnerving artist, played by Adam Driver.”

If the recent rash of older-woman-younger-man romances have had one thing in common, it’s the emphasis on the first half of that equation. Films like The Idea of You or Babygirl may not have totally ignored the male point of view, but it was purposefully deprioritized against the fantasy of female sexual awakening — the rush of discovery, the anxiety of aging, the sheer fun of hooking up with a pretty young thing.
Against that framing, the SXSW debut Fantasy Life plays, accidentally, like the flip side to that equation, with its focus on his perspective and its less starry-eyed, more downbeat tone. But if the movie does not offer the same kind of pleasure, it serves as an interesting variation on the theme, as well as a worthy discovery in its own right. With Amanda Peet in a remarkable star turn, it marks a promising debut for writer-director Matthew Shear.

It isn’t hyperbole to say that Amanda Peet gives the performance of a lifetime in “Fantasy Life.” There probably shouldn’t be any confusion between the actress and the role she inhabits as Dianne, a one-time screen star now in her early fifties who stopped booking parts a decade ago when the material wasn’t up to snuff. But there’s a wisdom and weariness to suggest Peet’s seen some things, and it can be unnerving to realize that it’s been about as long since she has been on the big screen herself. Her luminous return in Matthew Shear’s lightly comic drama about two people at a crossroads reminds that her fearlessness has been sorely missed as she throws any vanity out the window to play a walking tangle of anxieties, despite living quite comfortably with homes in New York and Martha’s Vineyard.

It is probably no accident that among Matthew Shear’s acting credits are no less than four movies directed by New York filmmaker extraordinaire Noah Baumbach, or that one of his most recent is another angst-ridden Jewish comedy, Between the Temples. Clearly he has spent his downtime on those sets soaking up the atmosphere and the comedic beats in preparation for his writing-directing debut Fantasy Life, premiering at SXSW today in the Narrative Feature competition.
Assembling a dream cast of actors who know how to deliver this kind of New York Jewish-centric character-driven comedy that Woody Allen trademarked and others like Baumbach have also travelled in so successfully, Shear actually seems to me to be more of a modern-day Richard Benjamin who also turned into a fine filmmaker in his own right. That seems to be the trajectory here except Shear is clearly cribbing from his own life and experience with depression,...

Talk about life imitating art, imitating life. About a month ago, Amanda Peet told IndieWire during a recent interview, something funny and mortifying happened to her at the grocery store in front of her two teenage daughters. Someone recognized the actress. Well, sort of. They said hello, and complimented her on her work. And then it became clear that this person “recognized” her as Lake Bell, and complimented her on Lake Bell’s work.
This has happened before. It’s happened enough, in fact, that Peet encouraged her “Fantasy Life” filmmaker and co-star Matthew Shear to include it in his feature directorial debut, in which Peet plays an actress who, yup, often gets mistaken for Lake Bell. It’s funny, and it’s a little sad, and it’s incredibly honest, and it speaks to the spirit in which Shear, a Noah Baumbach regular and former star of the series “The Alienist,...

Have you been missing Matt Bomer on your screen? Well, we're about to get a whole lot more of him when his highly anticipated Hulu sitcom Mid-Century Modern makes its premiere in March 2025. Even though the actor has been known for his drama work, most recently earning an Emmy Award nomination for his work in Showtime's limited series Fellow Travelers, he's prepared to bring the laughs as the lead of a multi-cam sitcom for the first time.

Many exciting shows are coming to Hulu over the next couple of months.
The streaming service confirmed on Monday that Mid-Century Modern, its highly-anticipated multi-camera comedy, is one of those and will receive its debut on March 28.
The series will stray from the typical weekly rollout, with the streaming platform dropping all 10 episodes on the premiere date.

Some shows benefit from the weekly release strategy to keep the conversation flowing, but we’ll reserve judgment on whether a binge release will benefit this series.

One of the best films of the 2020s and the latest in a long lineage of one of the best filmmakers of all time, Steven Spielberg's semi-autobiographical masterpiece The Fabelmansis a fantastic piece of self-reflective dramatic storytelling. It follows the childhood of Sammy Fabelman (played by Gabriel Labelle), a young man in the 1950s and 1960s who becomes enamored by the magic of cinema. The story closely mirrors the actual coming-of-age of Spielberg himself.
Though the film features numerous excellent scenes that draw directly from Spielberg's life, one of the most profound comes at the end of the movie, when teenage Sammy Fabelman has the chance to meet the director of such classic Westerns as Stagecoach and The Searchers: John Ford. Ford, played in a final on-screen performance by the late, great director David Lynch, instills valuable lessons into Sammy in a scene that is one of the best endings in recent film.

In the season 9 finale of "The Big Bang Theory," titled "The Convergence Convergence," Penny and Leonard Hofstadter (Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki) decide to renew their vows after their disastrous Las Vegas elopement in that season's premiere, "The Matrimonial Momentum" (which, as it happens, is one of the lowest-rated episodes of the entire show). When everyone's families gather in Pasadena for the ceremony, something very unexpected happens ... which is that Leonard's father Alfred (Judd Hirsch) and Sheldon Cooper's (Jim Parsons) mother Mary, played by Laurie Metcalf, really hit it off. The “Cruel Intentions” star is returning with three new movies, including the Israel-Hamas war drama “Stay Forte” with Judd Hirsch and the brothers Mark and Michael Polish’s “There There.” She will also star in supernatural thriller “Silent” from filmmaking duo Doron and Yoaz Paz.
Blair, who went public with her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2018, hinted she had projects in the works when I spoke with her at the Elle Women in Hollywood dinner in November: “I started feeling really better this last year and I’m back at work and doing things so I will have things to announce.
“Stay Forte,” directed by Israeli filmmaker Doron Eran, tells the story of Alon Shamiriz, Yotam Haim and Samer Tallaka, three Israelis taken hostage by Hamas during its Oct. 7 attack in southern Israel.

John Fink said in his review, “A crowd-pleasing film inspired by director Tracie Laymon’s experience talking with a stranger online at a low point in her life, Bob Trevino Likes It is a moving story that proves good people do exist in this world. With two wonderful performances by Barbie Ferreira and John Leguizamo––playing two strangers who share the same last name but are otherwise unrelated...

Jules Feiffer, the provocative satirist, cartoonist, playwright and 1960s counterculturist who wrote the screenplays for Mike Nichols’ classic Carnal Knowledge and Robert Altman’s Popeye, has died. He was 95.
A Pulitzer Prize winner, Feiffer died Jan. 17 at his home in Upstate New York of congestive heart failure, his wife, Jz Holden, told The Washington Post.
The Bronx native joined such luminaries as Samuel Beckett, Sam Shepard, John Lennon and Robert Benton in contributing material to the bawdy 1969 Broadway musical revue Oh! Calcutta!, and he earned a Tony nomination for best play in 1976 for Knock, Knock. Starring Judd Hirsch, it was “a wild spree of jokes, pratfalls, word games, collapsing scenery, falling bodies and burlesque sight gags,” according to The New York Times.
In 1967, his original comedy Little Murders made its Broadway bow with a cast that included Barbara Cook, Elliott Gould and David Steinberg, and Feiffer wrote the screenplay for...

Acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg opens up about the loss of David Lynch.
Per Variety, Spielberg joined the numerous Hollywood icons who have publicly mourned the tragic death of David Lynch. "I loved David’s films," Spielberg stated. "Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive and Elephant Man defined him as a singular, visionary dreamer who directed films that felt handmade,” Spielberg said in a statement. “I got to know David when he played John Ford in The Fabelmans. Here was one of my heroes—David Lynch playing one of my heroes. It was surreal and seemed like a scene out of one of David’s own movies. The world is going to miss such an original and unique voice. His films have already stood the test of time and they always will."

Something is happening here and, given the hoopla over “A Complete Unknown,” probably even Mr. Jones has an idea what it is: Bob Dylan mania. Thanks to James Mangold’s new film, America is currently experiencing a spike of collective fascination with Dylan that probably hasn’t peaked quite this high since 1965, when the events of the biopic wrap up.
Thankfully, “A Complete Unknown” has turned out to be a thoughtful treatment as well as a crowd-pleasing one that, against most odds, seems to be equally bowling over deeply Dylan-informed boomers and younger audiences that might have Timothée Chalamet as their first point of entry into this world. As a filmmaker, Mangold doesn’t try to solve the mysteries of Dylan for moviegoers. But it appears he’s given them something they like even better than easy psychological tropes: electricity.
