The ’90s have always been a tricky decade to define for horror, offering everything from cable and physical home releases to big budget horror. On the latter front, horror experimented with grand period pieces like Interview with the Vampire and Bram Stoker’s Dracula as much as it did with spectacle driven, action-heavy creature features.
The decade delivered no shortage of memorable monster movies that emphasized creature FX and entertainment, from theatrical releases to home video offerings.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to ’90s monster movies that delivered high-energy, fun, and inventive monster designs. Because it’s Monday, we can use more horror fun.

Modern scream queen Jenna Ortega has been a part of several iconic franchises, given her roles in Scream, Wednesday, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. If she had her pick to join any franchise she wanted to next, she pointed to the one born from the 1984 horror comedy classic Gremlins.
Per IMDb, Ortega was recently at the South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) to promote her new film, Death of a Unicorn. Reflecting on the movies she loved as a child, Ortega mentioned Gremlins, the film that garnered a sequel along with an animated prequel series. She also made it clear she wants to join a potential third Gremlins film if one ever gets made.

"You know what I used to love as a kid? Gremlins," Ortega said. "Gremlins, would love... Gremlins 3? 4? I don't know. Call me!"

Jenna Ortega, star of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Wednesday, and 2022's Scream and its sequel, Scream VI, has revealed the next iconic franchise she would love to join, and it's a beloved '80s horror classic. Speaking to IMDb on the SXSW red carpet for the premiere of her new movie, A24's Death of a Unicorn, Ortega shared her hopes of one day sharing the screen with the monstrous Mogwais from the Gremlinsmovies for a feature film revival, which, at this point, is 35 years on from the chaotic creatures last cinematic outing.
The revelation came in a video (below) when Ortega was asked about which mythical creature from her childhood she would like to see have a moment in the spotlight again. Perhaps not the best to be exposed to bright lights, but the actress landed on the scene-stealing furballs from the Gremlins franchise. "You know what I used to love as a kid?...

Among Hollywood directors, few have the career highs and lows as Joe Dante. Dante, a lover of schlock cinema, Looney Tunes and Chuck Jones, has achieved iconic success with some of his films, while others hold the record as some of the biggest bombs in Hollywood history. This bipolar success rate likely derives from Dante’s aesthetic: for better or worse, his movies always combine horror with humor, slapstick with the macabre. For proof, look no further than Dante’s greatest success, Gremlins.
Gremlins opened in 1984 and became an immediate smash, elevating Dante as a director among the Hollywood pantheon. It also made an icon out of its star, Gizmo the mogwai. More than 40 years later, the film still commands a following, thanks to the way it slithers over the razor’s edge between horror and comedy. Gremlin's Character With The Most Upsetting Death Gets Transformed Into Darkly Comedic Action Figure
The most upsetting death in Gremlins has been recreated in the form of an action figure. Released in 1984, Gremlins is a Christmastime cult classic film about a young man who mishandles a cute-looking creature, accidentally unleashing monsters on his small town. The movie was directed by Joe Dante and featured a leading cast including Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, John Louie, and Keye Luke. The movie was a box office success and has since been considered a classic '80s movie.
Now, @fortheloveofoldtoys has recreated one of the Gremlins' death scenes in a new action figure.

Hollywood has demonstrated time and again that studios will stop at nothing to construct a franchise around a successful film. If an idea works, it's frivolous to waste time and effort trying to make something novel. It's much easier to explore new avenues within a pre-existing story than to create a new one altogether. Thus, the industry typically pours its resources into these projects. Unsurprisingly, many movie sequels coming in 2025 boast the highest budgets of any other titles.
Even the large majority of the highest-grossing movies of all time are sequels. The bottom line is that these films make money, but they still need to maintain a degree of innovation. Typically, there is already a set path for the story. A franchise like the Infinity Saga particularly benefited from this quality. Other times, all that's necessary is a new character or conflict. On the rarest of occasions, a sequel will...

Horror fans and critics can usually predict when a movie is going to bomb at the box office. Even with a star-studded cast, like Scream 4, some horror movies are doomed from the beginning. Most of the time, movies that tank at the box office are unwanted sequels or movies that are only loved by niche horror audiences.
Horror sequels and remakes already tend to be risky movies at the box office because not all audiences resonate with their originals or only enjoyed the movie subsequently. Some box office bombs later became fan favorites in the eyes of horror fans. House of Wax grossed over $32 million domestically with a $40 million budget but is considered a campy, classic horror movie. It can take some time for horror movies to resonate with audiences, but some horror movies were doomed from the beginning.

It sounds like we might get to hang out with the Gremlins again soon in a new movie. You remember the rules, right?
Deadline reports that Warner Bros. is interested in creating a new movie in the Gremlins universe with Christopher Columbus, who penned the screenplay for the original 1984 film directed by Joe Dante. A beloved cult classic franchise, it has always been a little surprising that Warner Bros. didn't produce more Gremlins movies after the 1990 sequel The New Batch.
But the production company has shown interest in more Gremlins content, see the animated series on Max that has two seasons, the more recent of which started streaming in October.
Conversations regarding a third live-action Gremlins film started as early as 2013, but they never came to fruition. However, rumors have been swirling for a while now that Warner Bros. wanted to bring back the franchise, likely due to the animated series being relatively well-received.

Gremlins 3 has received a reassuring update despite being in development for eight years, when the original writer was attached to the sequel. In 2017, it was announced a potential Gremlins 3 script had been written by Chris Columbus, who penned the screenplay for the 1984 original. Since then, the movie hasn't gotten any concrete updates, aside from confirmation by Colombus in 2020 that creature puppets would be used instead of CGI. The latest release from the franchise is Max's animated Gremlins series, aimed at a younger audience and serving as a prequel to the original.
Now, in a report from Deadline about Warner Bros.' plans for future movie prospects, it was confirmed Gremlins 3 is still in development, with Columbus serving as the writer. This is confirmation that, despite the project not getting any concrete news for five years - and being in development for eight - the sequel is still being worked on.

Image Source: Warner Bros Imagine being a young actor, just 19 years old, working on a Steven Spielberg-produced film. Not just any film, but one that would become a beloved 80s classic: Gremlins! That was the reality for Zach Galligan, who landed the lead role of Billy Peltzer. But the experience gets even better. Galligan recently shared a fantastic story from his time on set, involving Spielberg’s office, some downtime, and a legendary arcade showdown. Remember, this was the 80s, when arcade games were all the rage. Having them at home or in your office was a real luxury. At GalaxyCon Columbus 2024, Galligan recounted this unforgettable experience, an encounter he still remembers vividly over 40 years later. The 1980s were a strange time for American cinema. The bleakness of 1970s cinema was falling out of vogue, and several members of the "film school generation" of filmmakers — the ones that broke out in the '70s — began turning to more complex, effects-based pictures that received giant studio budgets. Fantasy and sci-fi were big business in the '80s (largely thanks to the success of "Star Wars" in 1977), and the decade's most popular movies tended to be kid-friendly adventure films. The fantasy films of the 1980s left a deep mark on the Gen-x kids that saw them and, to this day, lists of the Best Films of the '80s tend to boast genre films like "Back to the Future," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "The Terminator," "Die Hard," "The Thing," et al.
Coming hand-in-hand with the rising tide of commercial fantasy, however, was a powerful, punk-rock, anti-conservative streak.

The holiday season is here, which tends to be a useful time for streaming. More people have time off work and school, which helps stimulate the box office and brings people together in their homes to watch new titles on streaming. This year, this has meant success for some of the major streamer's newer holiday hits. Netflix's animated family holiday film That Christmas debuted on the platform to positive reception and viewership, staying in the streamer's top 10 day after day and week after week for a while. Festive rom-coms like Our Little Secret and Hot Frosty also shined.
At the same time, this is the time of year when some streaming subscribers look for alternative options to the more typical festive fare. The Christmas horror movie Krampus, for example, surged on streaming during December, showing that fans had an appetite for the darker side of the holidays. Netflix's Carry-On...

Gremlins is as impressive today as it was when it was released in 1984, but the film could have been very different if producer Steven Spielberg had not stepped in and changed the movie. Writer Chris Columbus’ original script featured many more deaths than those seen in the festive favorite about a group of mischievous creatures that take over a small town over Christmas. While Spielberg was responsible for having many of them removed, both the producer and director Joe Dante fought Warner Bros. to ensure that one of the movie’s most tragic moments was not cut.
When watching Gremlins, it is sometimes hard to believe the film was made with the use of practical puppets in a time when CGI was just a pipe dream for the future. The impressive display of monstrous mayhem blows away many modern movies, and that is all down to the vision of both Dante and Spielberg.

While certainly not without its horror elements, Gremlins has been a beloved Christmas movie for the past four decades. It's just dark enough that it's often recommended as a "gateway horror film" for newcomers to the genre to watch before taking on more mature content, but the original plan was for Gremlins to be much more brutal.
Nosferatu producer Chris Columbus, the screenwriter of the Joe Dante-directed film, addressed what didn't make the final cut from his original script in a new interview with Vanity Fair. He shared how the body count was pretty high, noting how Lynn Peltzer (Frances Lee McCain), Billy's (Zach Galligan) mother, was scripted to be decapitated before later getting her life spared by rewrites. Another planned death was for the dog to actually be viciously killed by the Gremlins rather than harmlessly hung up in Christmas lights.

After 40 years, Gremlins remains one of the darkest Christmas movies, but it would have been much darker if writer Chris Columbus had his way.
While reflecting on his 1984 Joe Dante-helmed holiday horror, Columbus recently said the final cut was “plenty dark” but recalled who died in the original script, whether or not Gizmo turns into a Gremlin and other plot details.
“I think the dad stayed behind and fought the Gremlins, I don’t quite remember if he survived,” he told Vanity Fair. “The mom certainly didn’t. Billy [played by Zach Galligan] ran into the foyer of his house, and his mom’s head came rolling down the stairs. So there were some deaths. And Barney the dog was not so lucky to just be hung up in the Christmas lights. He was actually hung up by his neck and died. We killed the dog!”

‘Tis the season to watch holiday-themed horror, so we here at Arrow in the Head have decided to compile a list of the Best Christmas Horror Movies! Novelization fans know the majority of literary tie-ins stick closely to their source materials rather than stray from them, but whenever one does make notable changes, they take notice. Gremlins is one such case. Indeed, the late George Gipe stayed true to the spirit of that Christmas spectacle we have all come to love and celebrate each winter, however, the author also took artistic license — primarily with the adorable face of the Gremlins franchise, to whom he gave an origin that is truly out of this world.
Everyone knows the gist of Gremlins by now: A small American town is overrun by monsters around Christmas, and only one young man — along with his strange new pet named “Gizmo” — can put an end to the holiday horror. Gipe, who also penned the novelizations for Back to the Future and Explorers, didn’t think to change the basic story of Joe Dante...

It's the holiday season, which can mean only one thing: it's time to watch Christmas horror movies! Christmas horror is nothing new. In the Victorian era, folks would gather by the fireside around Christmas time to tell each other ghost stories (this is how we got "A Christmas Carol"). Over the years, the horror genre has embraced this idea by unleashing horror films set on or around Christmas. Some of these films are quite bad and seem to recycle the same boring idea ("What if a guy dressed as Santa Claus killed people?!") over and over again. But there are others that make the yuletide bright. Hell, even some of the killer Santa stories work. As the weird year that was 2024 comes to a close, and the horrifying uncertainty of 2025 lurks right around the corner, let's chug some mulled wine, deck the halls, and watch the following Christmas-centric horror movies.

While viewers come to light comedy movies to escape the horrors of the world and enjoy a good laugh, some films cannot help but unexpectedly go to dark places. Whether it’s a kids’ comedy that suddenly introduces a shockingly bleak piece of information or laugh-out-loud movies that turn increasingly sinister as the runtime progresses, comedy movies can sometimes be surprisingly disarming. While a certain amount of darkness has its place in every genre, the results can be unnerving when audiences don’t see it coming.
Some of the best light comedy movies ever have sinister subtexts that make the movie unexpectedly dark. While wacky characters may seem to be laugh-a-minute personalities at first, the existential nightmare that often makes up comedy movie premises can’t help but feel dark as the story builds toward its grand conclusion. Horror movies with a good hook and humor can be rare, but a few manage to capture both. Some of the best horror movies from the 1980s present far-fetched humor and a good story, while many of those from the 1990s are all about suspense and satirical humor.
Even decades later, horror movies surprise audiences with intriguing premises that integrate comedic moments. Some horror movies have strong cult followings for their humor, and that wouldn't be possible without a strong starting point. These movies show that audiences will always enjoy an absurd moment or two, adding a nice contrast to the suspense and making the film even more enjoyable.

These movies show that audiences will always enjoy an absurd moment or two, adding a nice contrast to the suspense and making the film even more enjoyable.

Image Source: Warner Bros Gremlins is one of the most beloved movies of the 1980s. The 1984 box office hit masterfully combined fantasy, comedy, and horror. Who could resist Gizmo and the mischievous Gremlins? Produced by Steven Spielberg, written by Chris Columbus, and directed by Joe Dante, the film was in excellent hands. The movie captivated audiences with its perfect mix of humor and scares, making it an instant classic. Gizmo, the adorable Mogwai, quickly became a fan favorite, while the mischievous Gremlins brought both chaos and laughs. Six years later, the sequel Gremlins 2 The New Batch was released. While it was a fun movie, it featured over-the-top comedy and musical numbers that set it apart from the original. The sequel took a more humorous and satirical approach, with memorable scenes that delighted fans. At Comic-Con Liverpool, Gremlins and Gremlins 2 star Zach Galligan shared his thoughts on which Gremlins film he prefers.

Let's face it: the best Christmas movies aren't complete without a good villain. In fact, for as many beloved Christmas characters as there are, more than half of them are the villains of the story. I suppose nothing gets us in the Christmas spirit more than watching it be defended from the Grinches and Scrooges of the world. So, to definitively rank them all is quite a task. Cinema's greatest Christmas villains range from the deliciously malicious to the just straight up terrifying. However, we here at /Film are up to the task.
There's an easy way to qualify for this list — be in a Christmas film — but we wanted to ask ourselves some deeper questions. When we think of the holiday season, do we think of these villains? Are the characters themselves strong or memorable? Are they embedded in the iconography of Christmas? Better yet, do they threaten the...

Sharing a meal with family and friends is all well and good as far as Christmas celebrations go, but for the film lovers among us, it's the perfect time to hibernate in front of the television with a cozy blanket and mug of hot chocolate with a watch-list of some of the greatest Christmas films ready to go. While not every cinephile finds satisfaction out of the genre, it's a time so magical that everything from horror films, '80s action, and even German Impressionism can all find a place in Christmas films.
Ranging from the corny and ridiculous to generational classics, Christmas films have introduced to us some of cinema's most memorable characters. The traditional George Baileys and multiple Santa Clauses hit us in the feels and remind us of the season's merriment, while the Christmas-adjacent Gizmos and John McClanes grant us the space to clench, laugh, and gasp with festive cheer.

Surprising everyone, he dropped a social commentary horror thriller called Get Out and demonstrated his talent (and love) for horror. He is now known as one of the most popular modern directors in the world of horror. Jordan Peele's films almost always invoke deep thought from his beautifully crafted scary stories.

Behind the doors of Hollywood's biggest studios, filmmakers pitch concepts that sound too weird to become anything substantial but lead to hugely iconic movies. Some movies with seriously wasted potential also have a bizarre premise, but they were not so skillfully executed. However, it is the weird ideas that are the best material for directors and producers, when they at least lead to unique movies, hopefully showcasing important themes.
Out-of-this-world experiences and surreal fantasy have resulted in some of the best fantasy movie performances ever, while strange new worlds and magic systems mean fascinating visuals. Yet movies with weird source material succeed when they leverage their basic concepts in service of powerful metaphors. Stranger movies often become iconic when their very nature means they are memorable, with quotes and images that stay in people's heads.

The following contains spoilers for Gremlins: The Wild Batch
Gremlins: The Wild Batch, the follow-up season to Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, began streaming on Max on Oct. 3. In a new clip posted by comicbook.com, it shows the sweet and lovable Gizmo separated from his friends and captured by a Warden who runs things on the island prison, Alcatraz.
The Warden, who is voiced by Will Forte is seemingly excited to have captured the little Mogwai, offering him sustenance, but also keeping him in a cage. Gizmo, along with his friends Sam (Izaac Wang) and Elle (Gabrielle Nevaeh) had just arrived in San Fransisco but didnt quite stick the landing and ended up in the prison.
A big fan of Mogwai, the Warden wants to add him to his collection and gives Gizmo a tour of his office, which shows other animals lining the shelves, to which the Warden says they are his past pets.

While there might not be a slew of series set to premiere on Max next month, that doesnt mean the options heading to the streaming platform are anything to overlook. With shows like The Last of Us, The Penguin, and House of the Dragon, the streaming service has proven time and again that they offer quality over quantity nearly every month of the year. The shows set to arrive in October might not be for everyone, but theres no denying each series is worth checking out.
With dramas, comedies, and an animated childrens series heading to Max next month, the streaming platform has something just about anyone would enjoy watching. While there certainly arent any shows specifically made for the Halloween season, theres still plenty to love about each series Max has to offer in the coming weeks.

The Gremlins franchise has always been a small one, with just two movies to its credit for decades. Both have become classics in their own right, with the first being an indelible piece of 1980s nostalgia, while the second is a cult-favorite send-up of the marketing forces that created the first. The recent success of the Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai streaming series confirms that the fan base is loyal. Despite that, however, the franchise hasn't seen the kind of legacy sequels and projects enjoyed by other era classics such as Ghostbusters and The Karate Kid.
It's not for a lack of effort. Gremlins' sterling reputation and legions of fans make it a go-to for Part 3, and Secrets of the Mogwai demonstrates that the franchise still has a lot of untapped storytelling potential. There have been multiple efforts over the years to bring a third Gremlins movie to the big screen.

Joe Dante’s pointedly cynical Gremlins 2: The New Batch contains some of the most ingenious fourth wall breaking ever conceived.
Deadpool & Wolverine may perhaps be the highest-grossing film ever to break the fourth wall – that is, shatter the invisible barrier between the audience and the actors on the screen, who traditionally are supposed to pretend that nobody’s watching. But while Ryan Reynolds’ winks to his viewers and irreverent, self-referential jokes are part-and-parcel of both the Deadpool character and the franchise as a whole, the practice of breaking the fourth wall has been a staple of cinema for over a century.
Yet while numerous movies have brought their stories to give a knowing look to the audience, few have broken the fourth wall as creatively as Joe Dante’s 1990 sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch. A sequel to his own festive horror comedy, 1984’s Gremlins, the movie was...

Sometimes, a movie does so well that it spawns a sequel. But after that, the franchise just ends; there isn't a third installment, no matter what was promised or how badly fans want one. Sometimes fans will wait years for a threequel only to be bitterly disappointed.
There are many reasons a threequel might not go ahead. Perhaps the sequel pulled in less money than was expected or even totally bombed. Or, perhaps a threequel simply got stuck in "development hell" as the producers moved on to other things. It can be very trying for fans because it usually means the story is left unfinished.

"Gremlins" is a holiday classic — a fun, nasty little monster movie that's perfect to revisit when Christmas rolls around. In "Gremlins," a small Norman Rockwell-like town descends into chaos when a group of mischievous monsters run amok. The monsters, the gremlins, spring forth from the body of a cute little critter known as a Mogwai, named Gizmo. While Gizmo is nice and cuddly, the gremlins are a bunch of slimy perverts who love to smoke cigarettes, destroy property, and kill people. All of this plays hell with the holiday season of poor local loser Billy (Zach Galligan), who is gifted Gizmo by his father (Hoyt Axton), a struggling inventor who can't quite get the hang of the whole "inventing" thing.
Also in the movie: Billy's very good dog named Barney. Barney, played by a dog actor named Mushroom (omg, adorable) is a very good movie dog — his reactions during scenes are perfect.

Phoebe Cates nearly ended Zach Galligan's career before she helped launch it.
Galligan was the New York City-born son of a corporate lawyer and a psychologist when, in his late teens, he landed his first major Hollywood audition. By 1984, films like “Jaws” (1975), “Star Wars” (1977) “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981) and “E.T.” (1982) had firmly established the summer blockbuster craze, with Steven Spielberg productions leading the way. On June 8, 1984, two films were released simultaneously that continued the summer blockbuster trend, while also establishing new trends with their combination of horror/comedy and fresh marketing and merchandising strategies. Unsurprisingly, one film was produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, and his “Gremlins” battled for the number one box office spot with familiar faces from “Saturday Night Live” who were now “Ghostbusters.” Their quotable scripts and at-the-time unique blend of humor and gore have had long-lasting effects on the film industry and on pop culture that continue to resonate four decades later. Read on for more about the 40-year anniversary of both “Gremlins” and “Ghostbusters.”

Tom Hanks was a television star in 1982 and, 42 years ago, if what you really wanted was to be a movie star, that was a problem.
Actors had made the transition from small-screen success to big-screen stardom before, but Hanks' claim to fame was as one-half of the cross-dressing duo living in an all-women's apartment building on the ABC sitcom "Bosom Buddies." Though the show was initially a hit, the gimmick quickly wore thin, and Hanks found himself back on the casting market.
Post-"Bosom Buddies," Hanks' sole film credit was in the 1980 slasher flick "He Knows You're Alone," and, to his credit, he was so charismatic that the filmmakers opted not to kill him off onscreen. Still, that's not much to hang your hat on, nor was, unfortunately, two years of mild television notoriety. Even in the less conventional summer of 1984, the Spielberg-produced comedy horror was a gleeful rule-breaker
There’s no character in Joe Dante’s Gremlins more beloved than Randall Peltzer (Hoyt Axton), a struggling inventor from small-town Kingston Falls who travels the country bearing a great sales pitch (“I make the illogical logical”) and a bunch of products that keep backfiring on him. His Bathroom Buddy, a combination shaving mirror/toothbrush/toothpick/nail file/dental mirror, could be a Swiss army knife for overnighters were it not for a misfiring toothpaste button. His coffee machine makes sludge. His peeler-juicer is a kitchen-wide pulp explosion. And his egg-cracker is much more successful at breaking eggs than it’s designed to be.
Yet when Randall comes home for Christmas, he’s greeted to a hero’s welcome from his son, Billy (Zach Galligan), and his wife, Lynn (Frances Lee McCain), who laments...

Despite a copious amount of violence, multiple deaths, and slimy, goopy scenes wherein little monsters get blended, torched, melted, and otherwise horribly mutilated, Joe Dante's Frank Capra spoof "Gremlins" was released on June 8, 1984, with a PG rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. Producer Steven Spielberg recognized that "Gremlins," in being so tonally whimsical, wasn't quite raw enough to warrant an R-rating, yet also realized that it might be a little too terrifying for the kids who were allowed to see PG-rated movies. Spielberg suggested to the MPAA that it introduce a PG-13 rating to cover films like "Gremlins." It should also be noted that, in 1984, a PG rating was similarly given to Spielberg's violent adventure film "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," so it was high time a stop-gap be included.
The PG-13 rating was introduced on July 1, less than a month after "Gremlins" opened. Weirdly,...
